Government confirms first round of state funding for Galway 2020

Galway Daily news Galway 2020 appoints new Creative Director after eight month vacancy

The government has confirmed the first €6 million round of state funding for Galway 2020 in the budget.

The funding is part of the €339 million budget for the Department of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht in 2019.

Minister for Culture Josephina Madigan confirmed this week that the government will release the first tranche of state funding for the European Capital of Culture project next year.

The state has committed to providing a total of €15 million for Galway 2020, a significant chunk of the original €46 million budget.

In the coming weeks the Department will set up a performance delivery agreement to go with the funding grant, to make sure it is well spent.

“It’s important the spend we give to Galway 2020 is accounted for, that we get value for money,” the Minister said.

According to the Irish Times, Minister Madigan said that she hopes Galway 2020 will appoint a new Creative Director in the near future.

Since the departure of Chris Baldwin from the role of Creative Director in May there has been no-one with unified creative control of the project.

Patricia Philbin, senior executive with Galway city council, was recently appointed the new CEO of Galway 2020 after the resignation of Hannah Kiely.

More recently Galway 2020 has been troubled by budget cuts facing many of the flagship projects contained in the bid book.

The Druid Theatre has already said that it will no longer be able to put on the project it had been working on for two years because of financial reasons.

After dropping Middle Island, the Druid has said it is working with Galway 2020 to identify another project it can undertake for the Capital of Culture.

Many of the other groups involved in projects for Capital of Culture met with the chief executives of Galway city and county councils recently.

In a agreed statement issued afterwards they said it was a positive meeting, and that all parties had committed to renewing their partnership after raising concerns about the impact budget cuts would have.

Three thousand homes in Galway without electricity

Galway Daily news Storm Isha: Over 6,000 properties without power in Galway this morning

Three thousand homes in Galway are without electricity this afternoon in the aftermath of Storm Callum.

Galway seemed to escape the worst of the damage of Callum this morning, as there were no outages in the city or county while the south and east of the country was badly hit.

However electrical outages cropped up later in the afternoon around 2pm.

The power losses are concentrated in two specific areas of Galway: Tuam North and Glenamaddy.

Two faults in the Glenamaddy area have left over 1,600 homes business without electricity.

While another two line issues in Tuam North are affecting just under 1,400 properties.

A small number of homes in Claregalway have also been affected.

The ESB expects power to be restored to the affected properties by 5pm this evening.

The Orange weather warning issued for Galway also remains in effect until 5pm in the aftermath of Storm Callum.

Early this morning, during worst of the storm, up to 30,000 homes around Ireland were without electricity.

Cork and Kerry were particularly hard hit, as the worst damage appeared concentrated in the South of Ireland.

Storm Callum raised fears of flooding in Galway, as its arrival coincided with the high tide.

But despite some slight overtopping at the Prom and the Docks, the city was spared any real flooding.

Connacht Bordeaux

Connacht Head Coach Andy Friend has named two Academy players on the bench for his side’s opening Challenge Cup game of the season against Bordeaux Bégles at the Sportsground.

Out half Conor Fitzgerald and Connemara man Colm de Buitlear, who has featured across the back three, are named among the Connacht replacements.

In the starting XV the front row of props Peter McCabe and Conor Carey along with hooker Shane Delahunt are all set for their first starts of the season. In the second row there is one change from the side that defeated Ulster last weekend, with James Cannon starting alongside Quinn Roux.

Captain Jarrad Butler at blindside, Colby Fainga’a at openside and number 8 Robin Copeland complete the pack.

Caolin Blade comes back in at scrum-half for the injured Kieran Marmion where he partners Jack Carty, who has been in outstanding form this season. Elsewhere in the back line the experienced Eoin Griffin joins Bundee Aki in midfield.

Kyle Godwin is named on the wing with Niyi Adeolokun on the opposite wing, and Cian Kelleher at full-back making up the back three.

“We are really looking forward to our opening game of our Challenge Cup campaign,” said Head Coach Andy Friend to Connacht Rugby’s official website.  “This is a competition that Connacht have a proud tradition in and we hope to make a big impact in this season.

“We are coming off six tough PRO14 games, so it is only natural that there is some rotation of the squad, but we have a good blend of youth and experience among the squad. We have included Conor Fitzgerald and Colm De Buitléar, two promising Academy players, among our replacements.

“We hope that they will get a chance to make their debuts at some stage during the eighty minutes. It is a big opportunity to be involved in a European fixture especially in front of the home fans in the Sportsground. We also have plenty of experience on that bench to call on if needed.”

Proposals to allocate €176,800 for repairs to the road from Mullagh Cross to Kiltormer and €260,000 for the road at Clonlahan have been welcomed.

Galway East TD and Minister for the Diaspora and International Development Ciaran Cannon said that the total investment of almost €440,000 would greatly improve the local road network.

The Minister said: “I am very pleased to note that under the 2019 road program, Ballinasloe Municipal District are proposing to allocate some €260,000 for road repairs to the L4300 at Clonlahan and that Loughrea area have also proposed allocating some €176,800 on the same road which between Mullagh Cross and Kiltormer.

“I am aware for some time, from constituents, of the issues pertaining to the road from Mullagh Cross to Kiltormer and particularly with respect to its unevenness at a number of points.

“The problem appears to be especially acute in Clonlahan townland with a number of waves, dips and humps that oblige motorists to slow down in advance.

“This is also a busy thoroughfare used by parents accessing St Brendan’s NS in Mullagh and members of the local communities in Mullagh, Killoran and in Kiltormer.”

Minister Cannon added that it will greatly enhance road conditions for local users.

Galway Daily life & style Kasbah wine bar launches Autumn menu

Enjoy the taste of Autumn this season as Kasbah Wine Bar and Restaurant launches its seasonal menu for people to share the flavours of the West.

This casual restaurant and diner overlooks the bustle of Galway on Quay street, nestled upstairs from Tigh Neachtain’s, one of Galway’s best loved pubs.

Kasbah has already attracted attention, being named the Best Newcomer in Connacht this year by the Restaurant Association of Ireland.

This autumn, Kasbah is all about getting people to spend time together, and reflects that with a menu that’s perfect for sharing.

Bring a friend to try the sharing platter of Gubbeen meats with chutney and pickles, or the Irish cheese board with autumnal fruits, quince paste, and homemade crackers.

They can be enjoyed upstairs in the Kasbah wine bar, or down in Neachtain’s over a pint.

The kitchen at the Kasbah is open from noon each day when it starts serving lunch downstairs at Neachtain’s, and from 5pm on the upstairs wine bar comes alive.

The main dinner menu brings a little bit of everything to the table from many different cuisines.

There’s the Flaggy Shore Oysters with elderberry, Velvet Cloud and tarragon, to Herterich’s pork tacos, burnt pineapple salsa and ranch to the ricotta and spinach dumplings with beetroot puree and hazelnuts.

Or if you’re looking to just enjoy a bite of something sweet or savory, try the homemade deserts, made fresh every day along with an array of breads and scone

There’s the Kasbah Doughnut, stuffed with toffee, praline cream and Jimmy Neachtain’s apples from his orchard.

Or if you’re not into that then the Malt parfait with tuille, truffle, sea salt ganache and crumb will sway you to the sweet side.

Of course a wine bar must have wine, and Kasbah has a wide selection of Biodynamic, Organic, Vegan and sustainable international wines available by the glass or the bottle.

The Sunday Brunch menu is served from 11am to 4pm, with great snacks paired with a special brunch beverages that change weekly.

Galway’s successful Connacht senior football champions will be heading to the Hilton Hotel in Wembley in December 2018 to receive their medals.

The Galway Association in London will honour Kevin Walsh’s squad when they are special guests on Saturday, 8th December.

Galway will also begin their Connacht title defence against London in May 2019.

“It’s going to be huge; it’s a fantastic coup to bring them over,” said Finbarr Burke to Damian Dolan of the Irish World.  “It’s the first time we’ve experienced anything like this. It’s going to be really exciting for Galway GAA supporters. Most people in the west of Ireland have connections here.”

Burke, the current chairman, has been involved with the Association for over 40 years and had been negotiating with the Galway county board since August regarding bringing the team over for the dinner.

Galway’s 0-16 to 2-6 victory over Roscommon in June secured their 47th provincial title before they came through the ‘Super 8s’ to participate in a first All-Ireland semi-final since their Sam Maguire success in 2001.

Eventual champions Dublin ended the Tribesmen’s run and it was also the Metropolitans who got the better of Galway in the Division One League Final.

The dinner is limited to 550 so people advised to apply early for tickets to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are priced at £85. To book, or for further information, or to find out about sponsorship opportunities contact Finbarr on 07915 608883 or the Galway Association secretary Nora Connelly on 01895 639539.

Under 15 B1 Hurling Shield Final – Monday, 8th October 2018

Salthill/Knocknacarra 3-10 Sylane 4-4

Darren Kelly in Duggan Park

Even though they were comfortable winners over Sylane in the group stages, Salthill/Knocknacarra were left hanging on near the finish before finally closing out this decider.

Kevin Brady’s team led 2-4 to 2-3 at half-time and struck two late goals to create a grandstand finish but Salthill/Knocknacarra held on at the end.

Daniel O’Flaherty’s six unanswered scores in the third quarter were the key difference even if his two goals were also instrumental.  And he was awarded the man of the match afterwards thanks to an overall tally of 2-9.

SALTHILL/KNOCKNACARRA – under 15 Shield Hurling Winners!

“It was very exciting towards the end,” said Salthill/Knocknacarra manager Sean Gavin.  “I thought we nearly walked away without the spoils.  The lads dug deep.  They have it in them.  They’re disciplined.  We took our frees when we had the chances.  (I’m) very proud of them.  They deserved it.

“Daniel (O’Flaherty) deserved the man of the match.  He got those crucial scores at the crucial times.  Sylane came back into it.  We were quite worried.  They dug deep, they dug deep.  And they’re good lads.

The management team, which also included Conor Quinlan, Matthew Keane, Ivor Barrett, Liam O’Neill, Brian Keenan and Dr. David Hanney (medic), worked hard all season and needed to do seeing Sylane’s improvement from their clash the previous month.

“It was a very close-cut thing,” added Gavin.  “It was!  Sylane could have walked away with the shield today.  And Fergus (Hanney – captain) was right.  That was a totally different team that we played in Sylane the last time.  They’ve come a long way and we had to dig deep to get this one out.

“We’re waiting a long time to get some silverware in the club.  We deserve it and it’ll do the hurling the world of good.

“We’ve a great crew.  We’ve a good backroom team.  We’ve a lot of top rate coaches – Eamonn O’Shea (and) Edel Murphy.  They’re putting huge effort into hurling and camogie in Salthill and we’ll get rewards for it.”

Under 15 B1 Hurling Shield Final – Monday, 8th October 2018

Salthill/Knocknacarra 3-10 Sylane 4-4

Darren Kelly in Duggan Park

A contest with quality and fortune still hanging in the balance until the final few moments was arguably decided by a third quarter free taking exhibition as Salthill/Knocknacarra won the under 15 B1 Hurling Shield.

David Prendergast, Shane Mitchell and Adam Keane struck crucial Sylane goals while Salthill/Knocknacarra’s Aaron Mannion’s low drive was vital but top scorer Daniel O’Flaherty was the key figure.

As well as striking two goals, it was six unanswered points in the third quarter that swung this game Salthill/Knocknacarra’s way.  Before the game ended with a welter of excitement, O’Flaherty’s accuracy gave the city side a 2-9 to 2-4 lead on the three-quarter mark.

Daniel O'Flaherty
Daniel O’Flaherty – Man of the Match

The teams were level twice in the opening 10 minutes before this contest truly took off.  Sean Newell and Prendergast registered the Sylane points either side of a Salthill/Knocknacarra double from Mannion and O’Flaherty.

Things opened up on 12 minutes when Sylane got the first stroke of luck as Mitchell’s long ball dropped underneath the crossbar for a goal.  The momentum was with Kevin Brady’s team and Jamie Collins added a point but fortune was being shared equally as Salthill/Knocknacarra struck their three-pointer.

A speculative delivery saw O’Flaherty drop the sliothar towards the square but keeper Cormack Egan saw his grasp slip allowing Salthill/Knocknacarra their goal.  The city side were lifted as O’Flaherty levelled.  But there was no luck about the next goal as Mannion’s low strike made it 2-3 to 1-3.

Against the wind, Sean Gavin’s team were in control but Sylane were given a reprieve.  Newell sent Prendergast on the run for a green flag on 27 minutes.  And when Declan Heneghan found the target, Sylane led 2-4 to 2-3 at half-time.

After O’Flaherty’s frees gave Salthill/Knocknacarra a commanding position, Sylane struck 10 minutes from time when Keane got their third goal.

Salthill/Knocknacarra got another stroke of luck.  O’Flaherty’s long delivery saw Egan unfortunate to get caught out again as the ball nestled in the net.  Salthill/Knocknacarra were five ahead again but Sylane didn’t relent and Prendergast got their fourth goal giving them a chance.  But they needed another.

Scorers – Salthill/Knocknacarra: Daniel O’Flaherty 2-9 (eight frees), Aaron Mannion 1-1.

Galway Daily news No major damage reported from Storm Callum

Galway has so far been relatively unscathed by Storm Callum with no reported power outages or serious flooding.

There were fears that Callum could cause flooding in the city as it coincided with the high tide.

The city council reports that there was slight overtopping at the Docks and some water on the Prom in Salthill.

But despite very high water levels, there was no reported flooding in Galway city when the tide passed just after 8am.

Water came close to busting its banks down by the Spanish Arch and Wolfe Tone Bridge, but with preparations in place there was no incident.

Roads that were closed in the city centre last night are re-opening, with the Prom to re-open later once stones and seaweed have been cleared.

It’s hoped that Salthill will re-open to traffic shortly after noon.

During the night come motorists took to removing bollards an barriers placed at closed roads, forcing the council to issue an update that those roads were still shut this morning.

Galway county council is still asking motorists to avoid taking coastal routes as the Orange wind warning issued by Met Eireann will remain in effect until 5pm.

Mace head recorded highest winds of 113km/hr around 8am this morning, below predictions that there could be sustained winds as high as 130km/hr.

Nationally, there are some 30,000 homes without power throughout Ireland this morning.

Most of those are in the Southwest, particularly Cork and Kerry, but the ESB is not reporting any outages in Galway this morning.

Bus and rail services are mostly operating as normal. Bus Eireann have advised that Route 401 in the city is operating from Stop 6 in Eyre sq this morning, and Route 350 by the Cliffs of Moher is nor operating.

Similarly Irish rail is reporting no disruptions on the Galway line this morning, with all services operating as normal nationwide.

Met Eireann reports that Storm Callum is currently moving up long the Northwest coast of Ireland this morning.

Oranmore/Maree 2-15 Athenry 2-11

This was a shield final but the talent on show was from the top drawer as Oranmore/Maree picked up the victory surviving a late Athenry comeback.

Two Anthony Keady goals seemed to give the victors a comfortable result only for Ronan Jennings and Kelvin Langan to lead the charge in an Athenry fightback that saw get within two points after trailing 2-10 to 0-6.

It didn’t surprise former All-Ireland under 21 winning goalkeeper Richard Burke who headed the Oranmore/Maree management team along with Iggy Tuohy, Garry Davitt, Pierce Butler and Colm Fahy (doctor).

“It was a great to get the victory this evening against a good Athenry team,” said Burke after the final whistle.  “We’ve a lot of work done over the season.  A lot of things happened today for us – some good things, some bad things.

“We got the scores at the vital times and we just kept it going, plugging away until the end.

“We were always expected that, that Athenry would not go down without a fight.  They’re a very traditional team.  (In) our lads, there’s great characters among this team and they showed it there this evening.

“It started in our back line and there was five or six lads involved in it.  Some of those lads play a bit of soccer as well and they just seem find one another.  And Anthony (Keady) was on the end of it not for the first time to score.

“The link-up play was good.  And 10 first half wides alright was a small bit of concern.  But we’ll always tell the guys, at least you’re creating the chances.  And they’re going to go over some days (and) other days they won’t.  But we got the vital score before half-time and it gave us a small bit of a cushion.

“We knew we were in for a big fight in the second half and we got it from Athenry.

“There’s a lot of good guys (coaches) in the clubs that works tirelessly right through the winter.  Those lads are given a few weeks off but they’ll be back again before Christmas working in the club getting ready for next year’s championship.  Because we’re looking forward to under 16 next year.

“We’re going to be up against it with all the teams that’s there.  There’s great talent there right throughout the county.

“There’s an awful lot of work being done there throughout the club right from under 5, 6, 7 years of age, right through the grades.  We have been there or thereabouts in underage in a lot of competitions for the last number of years.  And it shows the work that is being done there.

“It pays off!  On a night like tonight, you take great satisfaction from it.”

Under 15 A Hurling Shield Final – Monday, 8th October 2018

Oranmore/Maree 2-15 Athenry 2-11

Darren Kelly in Duggan Park

Oranmore/Maree survived a late Athenry rally to take a four-point victory and win the under 15 A hurling shield.  Richard Burke’s team were 2-10 to 0-6 ahead on 42 minutes after points from Anthony Keady and James Harrison.

Athenry looked beaten but Ronan Jennings found the net before top scorer Kelvin Langan converted a free.  Oranmore/Maree hit back through Evan Grealish and Ruben Davitt but three points from Jennings, Ben Haverty and Langan left Athenry just 2-12 to 1-10 down with nine minutes left.

Keady scored but Athenry truly back when Haverty started the move that led to Langan rattling the net on 55 minutes.  Another Langan free had just two in it.  But Oranmore/Maree find the resolve to add scores from Davitt and Grealish to carry the day.

Athenry got off to the perfect start leading 0-2 to 0-0 after just seven minutes.  Langan profited from Jennings’ run to split the posts before adding a free.  It could have been better as Eanna Brady’s low drive went wide before Oranmore/Maree opened their account through Davitt on nine minutes.

Despite 10 first half wides, Oranmore/Maree grew in confidence and Rory Burke intercepted an attempted clearance for the equaliser on 13 minutes.  And after Brady set up Ryan O’Donnell for Athenry’s third score, three-in-a-row had the boys in blue two clear.

Rory Burke set up Davitt to make it 0-3 apiece before adding two points himself.  O’Donnell kept Athenry in touch as Oranmore/Maree’s misses weren’t allowing them seize control despite Harrison finishing off for their sixth white flag.  But when they did finally strike, it was a goal worthy of the admittance fee.

O’Rourke, Patrick and Rory Burke and Davitt interchanged before Gavin Smyth supplied Keady allowing Oranmore/Maree lead 1-6 to 0-4 at half-time.  Davitt added a point just after the restart but another fabulous goal on 33 minutes involving five players finished with Keady’s second major.

Points for Harrison (2) and Keady gave Oranmore/Maree their 2-10 to 0-6 cushion before Andrew Lawless’ team threw caution to the wind coming up just short.
