Calls for progress on 50 bed unit at Portiuncula Hospital as overcrowding gets critical

0
Galway Daily news Portiuncula Hospital reports high flu circulation

Calls have been made for urgent delivery of a 50 bed unit at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe as overcrowding reaches critical levels.

Galway-Roscommon TD Eugene Murphy says the new unit is “shovel ready” and works just needs the green light to proceed.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Murphy said that the €17 million project can begin at a moment’s notice once approval is given.

At a recent visit with hospital management, the Fianna Fáil TD said that despite the best efforts of staff, the situation at Portiuncula is becoming untenable.

“There is simply not enough room with bulky equipment left lying in hallways and corridors as staff try to manoeuvre their way around while patients are squeezed into wards,” he said.

According to Deputy Murphy, construction of this 50 bed ward would allow patients ready for discharge to be moved to a transfer ward and free up essential space in the main hospital.

Portiuncula Hospital treats over 25,000 patients every year at the A&E alone, set to increase to more than 28,000 this year.

In time past some 1,500 people a month would come to the A&E at Portiuncula, but Deputy Murphy claims that after the closure of the A&E at Roscommon, that went up to more than 2,000 people.

The A&E unit at Roscommon Hospital closed in 2011, replaced with an “urgent care unit” that operates from 8am to 8pm and an out of hours GP service.

On top of the A&E figures, each year Portiuncula handles 1,664 births, 4, 267 cardia investigations, 7,677 day cases, 44,573 radiology examinations, and 210,373 laboratory tests.

It serves a population of more than 400,000 people in Galway and Roscommon and employs nearly 1,000 people.

“It is important that this new 50 bed unit at Portiuncula Hospital proceeds immediately, and I would urge the Minister to give the green light to this project without any further delay,” concluded Deputy Murphy.

Abbeyknockmoy Hurling

Our U15’s are County Champions again! This incredible group of players continue to progress up through the grades and continue to overcome every obstacle in their path.

Having won the U14B1 final last year this tight panel of players made light of the step up and have once again ended the year unbeaten as county champions, will play in A1 next year and have now added more silverware to their already fine collection of County medals.

They started off the campaign with two away fixtures against Pearses and Ardrahan and finished the group with a home fixture to Kilconieron.

As we finished top of the group, we got a home semi- final with Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry and progressed into the final to play Cois Farraige who came through the other group also unbeaten.

We were hit along the way with some serious injuries but every member of the panel stepped up their game and took advantage of the opportunity to express themselves and shine.

But nothing seems to phase these young men and their never say die attitude, dedication, commitment and will to win has to be witnessed to be believed and every one of them are an absolute credit to their families and club.

We played the final Sat 13th on a horrendously wet day for hurling in Carnmore and came away with a win on score line of 6-6 to 3-4.

We had a quick tour of the parish and were warmly welcomed by Mattie and Mary Ryan of Ryan’s Laraghmore where they kindly provided food and refreshments for all who attended which is much appreciated.

Huge thanks to all parents for their support all year in getting players to training and matches. Thanks to Abbeyknockmoy HC for their continued support.

Massive thanks to Seamus McWalter for his amazing rehab in looking after all our young players not only on this panel but all club players no wonder people travel far and wide to attend Seamus and get 1st class physio.

Panel was:

Jamie Burke, Kian Flaherty, Mark Crehan, Lennan Doyle, Sean Lydon, Darragh Burke, Gavin Kelly, Michael Molloy (capt), Jamie Collins, Shane Forde, Thady Moran (MOTM), Niall Farragher, Niall Mannion, Cian Forde, Kevin Maher, Daire King, James Quirke, Cian Quirke, Olin Murray, Cillian Rabbitte, Jake Haverty, Cuan Lennon, Dylan Cosgrove.

The cup was kindly sponsored by Challoner trophies.  Three regional teams took part Shamrock Gaels, Eastern Harps and Northern Stars. The three teams were a credit to their clubs and their management and their footballing skills were appreciated by all in attendance.

It was fitting that the inaugural competition was won by the Eastern Harps regional team which involved players from Glenamaddy/Williamstown Club.

Mary Davis on behalf of her husband Kenneth, daughters Leanne and Kathlynn thanked all who had made this day possible, Galway Ladies county board, Geraldine Heverin, Challoner Trophies, the players and all in attendance, the management teams, the referees, and especially Glenamaddy/Williamstown Ladies Club for their preparation and attention to detail on the day.

Kilkerrin United

Kilkerrin United drew 2-2 with neighbours Shiven Rovers in Kilkerrin on Friday night but it was certainly a case of two points dropped by the home side. Kilkerrin dominated the early exchanges but couldn’t find the opening score.

In fact, it was the visitors who came closest after 20 minutes following a quick counter attack. Despite being reduced to ten players, Shiven Rovers took the lead as a corner kick was headed to the net late in the first half.

Kilkerrin regrouped at the interval and should have levelled the game early in the second half but the Shiven keeper pulled of some exceptional saves including one from a penalty kick.

Kilkerrin finally got back on terms with 20 minutes left when Aidan Kitt latched onto a Kevin Traynor pass and finished powerfully to the net. Try as they might, Kilkerrin couldn’t force a winner as Shiven held on for a share of the spoils. Next fixture is away to Ballymoe FC on Sunday at 11am.

Well done to all of the Kilkerrin United girls’ teams that played at the MWGL Finals day at Shiven Rovers Grounds on Saturday. Congratulations to the U12 girls who won the Cup and to all involved in winning the Mid-Western Girls League club of the year award.

Hard luck to the U10 & U14 girls who finished as runners-up in their respective competitions.

Congratulations also to the U11 boys who defeated Ballinagare FC 3-1 in Sunday’s RDYSL Shield Final at Lecarrow.

Despite going a goal down early on, Kilkerrin played the better football in the first half and were rewarded when Joe Mullin equalised following good approach play from the energetic Enda Keane & Dara Fahy.

Inspirational captain, Shayne Gordon pulled off some great saves in goal to keep the scores level until half time. Kilkerrin started the second half brightly with Darragh Kilmartin & Finn Hargadon commanding at the back.

Enda Keane gave Kilkerrin the lead after another good move involving Tomás Lee & Joe Mullin. Luke Walsh extended Kilkerrin’s lead with ten minutes remaining with a fine left foot finish.

Ballinagare tried everything to get back into the game but with Cathal Lee working tirelessly to hold up the ball and to close them down, they could not manage to create the chances needed and Kilkerrin held on for victory. Well done to all the players & management.

Last week’s RDFL Lotto numbers were 2, 6, 7 & 18. There was no jackpot winner. 4 match 3 winners: Moore United; Cam Celtic; Michael & Michelle Hughes, c/o Kilkerrin United; Mary Corrigan, c/o CP Ajax. Next week’s draw is for a jackpot of €15,000.

Best wishes to Cillian Halvey and his companions on their Australian adventure. Bon Voyage!!!

Catherine Corless awarded honorary degree by NUI Galway

Catherine Corless Galway news

Local historian and advocate for the survivors of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home Catherine Corless has been awarded an honorary degree by NUI Galway.

Speaking after the conferring ceremony, Catherine discussed the path her research went down in uncovering what happened at the Mother and Baby Home.

She had been collecting the stories of women who were resident at the home when someone brought up the grave site with her.

“I tried to find mothers who actually gave birth there. And when I found them they gave me a picture of a very harsh regime in the home itself,” Catherine said.

“Someone else mentioned then ‘Do you know there’s a little graveyard in there?’ And I was able to pinpoint it, I was looking at an old, old map. And on that map ‘Sewage tank’ was written on it. And I was like, hold on a minute this is no crypt.”

From here Catherine said she went to the office of registration for births and deaths in Galway, where a clerk helped her find how many children had died at the mother and baby home.

“And she asked me ‘Do you really want to purchase all those death certs?’ and I said I do. Now I expected 50, maybe a hundred at the most. And she said ‘There’s up to 800’.”

The campaigner was conferred with her degree on Monday along with three other people.

This year Catherine was also awarded the Bar of Ireland Human Rights Award for her ‘exceptional humanitarian service’, as well as the Rehab Group People of the Year Award.

In recognising Catherine Corless and the other recipients of the honorary degrees as the Autumn Conferrings President of NUI Galway Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh said:

“In honouring these exceptional individuals, we signal what we value in a range of areas that matter to us and to our society – advocacy and human rights, local history, disability rights, music and environmental sustainability.”

“NUI Galway is very pleased to recognise these exceptional individuals.  On behalf of NUI Galway I am delighted to honour them and their achievements in this way.”

The others who received honorary degrees were Sharon Shannon, internationally-recognised traditional Irish musician; Helen Rochford Brennan, activist for rights of people with dementia; and Brendan Dunford, biodiversity campaigner and founder of BurrenBeo Trust.

Darren Kelly in Mountbellew

St. Gabriel’s completed back-to-back promotions after they’re were crowned County Junior B Ladies Football champions in a rain soaked Mountbellew.

Ciara Lohan, Aisling Donnellan and Pearl Finnerty struck the three goals for the Kilconnell based side while Galway senior Caitriona Cormican also registered six points from play.

Gerard Donnellan has overseen this team’s progress along with his management team of Della Finnerty, Martin Costello, Damien Finn and Conor Delaney.

“They really pulled it out of the fire in the second half,” said Gerard Donnellan afterwards.  “They really pushed on.

“I just thought we let the work rate drop a small bit after 13 minutes.  So, we just said (at half-time) we’d to up it now and give it everything they have.  Thirty minutes to win it and in fairness to them, they did.

“Fair play to them, they (Glinsk) came back there and gave everything they had.  They put us to the pin of our collar in the first half.  In fairness to the girls, they upped it in the second half.

“We knew once they got the first score (after the break), it’ll settle them down.  But once they got the first score, they never really looked back.  They pushed on again.

“Their movement (full forwards Rosa Bleahene, Cormican and Aisling Donnellan) I thought was very good.  They were always out in front.  I don’t think they were bet to a ball.  They missed a few but in fairness, they kept shooting and it paid off.

“I thought when Emma (Reynolds) came on in the second half, she brought a lot of energy to midfield as well.  And the likes of Niamh Daly there as well, the work rate was exceptional in the second half.

“This is massive.  We won the Junior C last year.  And our first year up, we win it again.  So, it keeps going and keeps interest and keeps girls involved.

One person who would have been looking down on St. Gabriel’s was Gerard’s father Padraig who passed away recently.  Padraig was heavily involved with the club and served as chairman while also having daughters Niamh and Aisling playing.

“He would have been at every game,” added Gerard Donnellan when asked about his father.  “He would have given a bit of advice to us on the sideline and everything.  And telling us what we were doing right and what we were doing wrong.

“He would have been proud of the girls today.  They put in a great performance.  And we’ll celebrate tonight.”

County Junior B Ladies Football Final – Saturday, 13th October 2018

St. Gabriel’s 4-16 Glinsk 3-4

Darren Kelly in Mountbellew

St. Gabriel’s finally put the boot down in the second half to run out comfortable winners of the County Junior B Ladies Football title.  Five points unanswered created a buffer for the east Galway side before goals from Aisling Donnellan and Pearl Finnerty wrapped up this contest.

The victors led 1-8 to 2-3 at half-time but could easily have found themselves behind despite dominating the third quarter.  After just 50 seconds, they’d struck the first goal as Rosa Bleahene, Caitriona Cormican and Aisling Donnellan combined to set up Ciara Lohan.

St. Gabriel’s inside forwards were a constant threat and points for Donnellan, Bleahene, Niamh Daly and Cormican (2) gave them a 1-5 to 0-0 lead on 12 minutes.  Glinsk hadn’t settled yet but when Emma Curley split the posts on 13 minutes, they gradually got back in contention.

Ellen Bleahene made it 1-6 to 0-1 for St. Gabriel’s before Glinsk were awarded a penalty after Shauna Keane was fouled.  Curley had her first shot saved but referee Tom Browne wasn’t happy with the positioning of keeper Laura Hession.  The second was dispatched into the net.

Laura Scanlon pointed on 19 minutes reducing arrears to 1-6 to 1-2 but St. Gabriel’s looked in control again when Ellen Bleahene won thier penalty but Donnellan’s attempt to place the ball was off target and wide.  However, she made amends with a free.

Curley and Cormican traded white flags but Glinsk were definitely back when Curley struck a goal.  But captain Lorraine Curley was sinbinned after the restart and St. Gabriel’s pulled clear through Ellen Bleahene, Cormican (3) and Donnellan.  And on 47 minutes, Donnellan rattled the net.

St. Gabriel’s third goal came four minutes when later when Donnellan turned provider for in the in running Pearl Finnerty.  The player of the match made it 3-14 to 2-3 before Emma Curley converted Glinsk’s sole second half score.  Donnellan and Ellen Bleahene concluded St. Gabriel’s account.

Galway Daily news

The body of a young man in his 20s was discovered in the bushes in front of Galway city hall on Monday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at brought to University Hospital Galway where a postmortem examination will be carried out.

Gardaí say they are not treating the death of the young man, whose name has yet to be released, as suspicious.

The city council meeting that was scheduled to take place on Monday afternoon had to be deferred because of the discovery.

The meeting was meant to start at 2pm, but Mayor Niall McNelis decided to defer it to a later date out of respect.

According to the Irish Times the young man was from Galway and known to Gardaí here.

He had returned to the city late last week and was engaging with local housing services.

Galway city council extended its sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased man.

Though its not known if the man was homeless, the spot where he was found is regularly used by people sleeping rough on the council’s grounds.

Mayor McNelis said that he was shocked and saddened by the death of the young man.

With winter closing in and the nights getting colder, Mayor McNelis said it is crucial that people sleeping rough be engaged with to offer every possible shelter and support.

He said that he has written to Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy to visit Galway and meet with the people working on the frontlines of homelessness services.

The letter also asked the Department to make every necessary resource available to the council and homelessness agencies this season.

Ballybane is the most heavily littered urban area in Ireland

0
Galway Daily news Galway accounts for just 2.5 percent of litter fines issued in Ireland

Ballybane is the most heavily littered area in all of Ireland’s towns and cities according to the findings of the latest Anit-Litter League Survey.

Irish Business Against Litter carried out a survey of littering in 40 towns and city areas around Ireland.

Ballybane in Galway city was the lowest ranked area on the list. It and Dublin North were the only areas found to be Seriously Littered.

Fermoy in Co. Cork was the cleanest town in the country according to the litter survey.

According to IBAL Galway, Dublin, and Cork city were all more heavily littered than in previous surveys.

“We have seen a worsening of litter levels in economically disadvantaged areas, which dominate the lower placings of our rankings,” says Conor Horgan of IBAL.

“What is often lacking in these areas is a sense of ‘pride in place’, which in turn reflects an absence of real community.”

He warned that while we’re rushing to address the housing crisis that plagues Galway, we still have to take the time to build real communities.

The survey was commissioned by IBAL and carried out by An Taisce over the summer.

In the report for Ballybane, an Taisce cited the, “pathways riddled with heavy levels of food related litter”, “huge swathes of all manner of litter, as well as discarded bags of rubbish” and dumping near St Brigids Church.

77% of the towns surveyed by An Taisce were found to be clean, though five spots were ‘littered’ or ‘seriously littered’.

They are Cork City – Mahon, Cork city Northside, Ballymun, Dublin North Inner City, and Ballybane.

The greatest improvement of any town in the survey was Navan which rose 20 places to 14.

“Our surveys have consistently revealed a disparity in cleanliness between our city centres on the one hand, and neglected city areas on the other,” says Horgan.

“This disparity has never been more acute than this year – our city centres are cleaner, while disadvantaged urban areas are more littered.”

The survey highlighted the prevalence of ‘long-lie’ litter in the worst hit sites as evidence of neglect over long periods of time.

Conor Horgan expressed his frustration at seeing the same sites on the list year after year “with no evidence of clean up”.

He says it shows that the problem is worst in areas that are being neglected by the local authority.

The most recent statistics on litter enforcement IBAL has available show that the cost of having to employ litter wardens is ten times higher than any revenue collected through fines.

In the past six years the amount collected through litter fines has halved from €1.7 million to €840,000

Otherworldly magic coming to this year’s Macnas Halloween parade

0

Expect magical, otherworldly sights as this year’s Macnas Halloween parade falls ‘Out of the Wild Sky’.

With its signature giant creations and sculptural images, pyrotechnics, bespoke costumes, and epic performances to live and original music, this year’s parade looks to tell the story of a city in the midst of great transformation.

Through fantastical imagery they’ll create a world that is hypnotic and intoxicating, glittering, mysterious and filled with shadow and nobility.

Between the white fire of the stars and the whispering woods you can hear the breath of small kingdoms rising and falling, dreams floating light as moths among the branches of the trees, where sweetness and tangibility flickers amongst the dark hug of time.

Macnas bring “Out of the Wild Sky” to the streets of Galway, packed full of love and magic, as they sculpt a new cosmos into being, where the language of birds and the stars take flight, bells ring out stitches of lightning burst forth as a new horizon lights up the deep and the wondrous and lifts up the sky.

Always a massive undertaking the Macnas parade involves the efforts of hundreds of performers from the Macnas Young Ensemble, Youth Ballet West, the Macnas Youth Drummers, the Public participation programme, The Hit Machine and many more.

Its sculptures and other creations are the work of 45 professional artists and 300 volunteers under the direction of CEO/Artistic Director Noeline Kavanagh.

The mad geniuses decorating this year’s offerings include Orla Clogher and Dave Young on design, Saileog O’Halloran on costume, Alma Kelleher on sound design.

The Face hairdressers are handling the hair, and Michelle Ruane is the makeup artist responsible for getting the performers to look as otherworldly as can be.

Eimhin Craddock will head up the Macnas Youth Drummers and Miquel Barcelo is once again at the helm with the Young Ensemble.

“We are very grateful to be supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Galway City Council for our year long programme of creative work,” said Noeline Kavanagh.

“We are delighted to have the support of our partners  Latin Quarter who will co-present this iconic event for the sixth year in a row with Macnas.”

The Halloween Macnas parade will make its way through the streets Galway on Sunday October 28.

The parade will set out from its home in NUIG at 5:30pm and make its way through the heart if Galway to the viewing delight of more than 54,000 people.

Afterwards it’ll head cross country to Dublin where it will close out the Bram Stoker Festival on Monday, October 29.

Other partners helping with the Halloween parade include O’Connells Bar, Acorn Life, and Galway Clinic.

This year the Connacht Hospitality Group have joined in for a four year partnership supporting the Macnas Youth Ensemble.

€20 million contract signed to build new Clarin College in Athenry

0
Galway Daily news Construction begins on new Clarin College in Athenry

The contract has been signed to begin construction of the new Clarin College in Athenry.

The Department of Education has said that it has closed the deal with its chosen contractor for the €20 million project.

Galway East TD Sean Canney confirmed that work will get underway on the project shortly and will be quickly completed.

“The building is a rapid build project which means that the construction duration is very short amounting to a 50 week programme. Works will begin on site immediately.”

Construction is expected to begin on the school this month, and be ready complete by March 2019, ready to receive students for the next school year.

The new school is designed for up to 1,000 students, with modern sports and meeting facilities, two special needs classrooms, and 90 car parking spaces.

Though tenders were first put out in May, people in the area have been fighting for these facilities for many years.

According to Deputy Canney when the new school is complete, the site of the existing Clarin College will be made available for a new Gaelscoil campus.

A primary and secondary level Gaelscoil will be built to serve the Athenry area.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Clarin College, which opened its doors as the Vocational School Athenry in 1968.

On Saturday the school celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Saturday at the Raheen Woods Hotel.

The anniversary celebration was open for anyone who passed through the halls of Clarin College in the last half a century.

Two Galway TDs promoted in Cabinet reshuffle

0
Galway Daily news Additional Dog fines will have little effect without more Dog Wardens

Two Galway TDs have been promoted to new ministerial positions in a cabinet reshuffle by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar this weekend.

The Taoiseach made several new appointments following the surprise resignation of Galway-Roscommon TD Denis Naughten this week.

Deputy Naughten stepped down from his role as Minster for Communications, Climate Action, and the Environment over questions surrounding his conduct in the implementation of the National Broadband Plan.

Galway West TD Sean Kyne has been appointed the government’s Chief Whip and Minister for the Gaeltacht and the Islands.

The Fine Gael TD was the Minister of State for Rural Affairs and Natural Resources.

He is being succeeded in that role by Independent Galway East TD Sean Canney as a result of the reshuffle.

These appointments are subject to the approval of the Dáil and the Cabinet.

Minister Canney was formerly a memeber of the Independent Alliance who supported the government.

During his time with the Alliance he had previously served as Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief.

He left that coalition of Independent TDs in May but has continued his support for the government since then.

Giving him a cabinet position will likely solidify that support as speculation spreads that a general election is likely in the near future.

Minister Canney has said that his priority in government will be to ensure that balanced regional development is delivered for rural Ireland.

The National Broadband Plan that Minister Naughten was in charge of was meant to roll out internet throughout rural Ireland.

It has been riven with controversy as the majority of bidders for the plan has withdrawn, leaving only David McCourt, chairman of Granahan McCourt.

It emerged recently that Minster Naughten has had multiple meetings with Mr McCourt during the procurement process for the Broadband Plan.

Richard Bruton will succeed Denis Naughten as Minster for Communications, Climate Action, and the Environment.

While former Junior Minister Joe McHugh will take over Mr Bruton’s role as Minister for Education and Skills.

Political efforts are now being made by Fine Gael to secure the support of more Independent TDs in order to shore up the minority government.

Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish said on Saturday that he would provide “necessary support” to the government during this critical phase of Brexit negotiations.

Update from Irish Rail clarifies confusion around Western Rail Corridor

An update received by Minister Ciaran Cannon this morning from Irish Rail clarifies some confusion about the viability of the Western Rail Corridor.

Minister Cannon said there has been much confusion and inaccurate information circulating about the current status of the review on the viability of the Western Rail Corridor.

Sources have claimed that the review was ‘almost complete’.

However, the update makes it clear that the rail review has yet to commence and the terms of reference for the review yet to be decided.

The information given to the Minister today also makes it clear that the consultant carrying out the review has yet to be appointed.

The update states:

“We have sent a final version of the terms of reference for the review to the Department of Transport for final sign off. We anticipate we will be advertising in the Official Journal within the next week or so (for the appointment of a consultant). We will need to observe the various timelines for procurement given the scale of the project. I anticipate that the soonest we would have a consultant on board would be around mid-December. One of their first tasks will be to advertise the consultation process.”
