Galway conference showed results of three year project on keeping kids out of orphanages

Galway Daily Galway event showcased results of three year project about keeping kid out of the orphanage

A conference held in Galway this week showcased the results of a project to help end practices that have seen millions of children separated from their families in orphanages.

This work was a partnership between NUI Galway, Pennsylvania State University, and Lumos, the international children’s rights organisation founded by J.K Rowling.

The three year project involved 97 child care and protection trainers sharing their expertise with over 14,000 practitioners across 14 countries.

An estimated 8 million children around the world live in institutions and so-called orphanages.

The majority of those, 80% according to Lumos, have parents that are still alive who could look after them if they got some support.

Professor Pat Dolan, Director of the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre at NUI Galway, said:

“Our work with Lumos is built on a mutual objective that governments, communities and professionals begin to move away from reliance on institutionalisation as the default solution for vulnerable children and instead, focus their resources, capacity and skills on community-based solutions.”

At the event in Galway this week a documentary was shown that focuses on the journey embarked upon by frontline practitioners working on ending reliance on orphanages.

The film, Together we Stared at the Moon, produced by Irish filmmaker Niamh Heery, set in Bulgaria and Colombia, features the stories of practitioners who are working with alternatives to institutional care in their countries.

Throughout this project the child care professionals held workshops, training courses, conferences and other events to try and find ways to keep child out of an orphanage.

The Atlantic Philanthropies provided the funding for people from Lumos and the two universities to carry out this work.

Lumos aims to end the institutionalisation of children by transforming education, health and social care systems to move towards providing family-based and community care.

This partnership is based on finding practical and sustainable ways to support families, particularly among those that have been marginalised.

Alex Christopoulos, Lumos’ Deputy CEO, said the joint work “Has played a pioneering role in helping to understand how child care and protection systems can be reformed in different contexts and cultures.”

By focusing on their shared goal that no child should be in an orphanage they, “Explored the role practitioners, communities, families and children and youth play in reforming systems,” he said.

“Moving away from an institutional one size fits all approach, to building the frameworks, skills and resources needed to enable children to flourish in families.”

Galway Daily News Macnas looking for volunteers to help with Halloween parade

Macnas Theatre Group are looking for volunteers to help them shepard this year’s Halloween parade through the streets of Galway and Dublin.

The annual Macnas parade is truly one of the highlights of Halloween in Galway every year, as tens of thousands gather to watch the signature massive, fantastical creations roll through the city streets.

This year’s parade ‘Out if the Wild Sky’ will feature everything that people have come to expect from Macnas’ Halloween spectacle like pyrotechnics, bespoke costumes, and epic performances to live and original music.

And of course all of that will be alongside massive sculptures and other creations on their floats.

Volunteers are needed for the Macnas parade to serve as stewards and float pushers for the Halloween parade’s in Galway on October 28, and in Dublin  the following evening.

Anyone interested in volunteering for either night can apply online here.

Macnas – Out of the Wild Sky

For ‘Out of the Wild Sky’ Macnas takes its inspiration from Galway as a city going through a period of great transformation.

Through fantastical imagery they’ll create a world that is hypnotic and intoxicating, glittering, mysterious and filled with shadow and nobility.

Between the white fire of the stars and the whispering woods you can hear the breath of small kingdoms rising and falling, dreams floating light as moths among the branches of the trees, where sweetness and tangibility flickers amongst the dark hug of time.

Macnas bring “Out of the Wild Sky” to the streets of Galway, packed full of love and magic, as they sculpt a new cosmos into being, where the language of birds and the stars take flight, bells ring out stitches of lightning burst forth as a new horizon lights up the deep and the wondrous and lifts up the sky.

SOCCER: Mountain South to Become Centre of Excellence

0
Mountain South

Mountain South, the area of land the GAA previously owned but couldn’t afford to develop, is set to become a soccer GAA Centre of Excellence.

According to the Connacht Tribune, the 103-acre site, recently sold to the Luke and Brian Comer from Glenamaddy, will be transformed into a centre to develop future soccer players.

Talented youngsters from 11 years up can take advantage of six soccer pitches and a huge gymnasium while 30 apartments are expected to be built to accommodate 100 youngsters.

The Comers are Galway United’s main financial backers and aim to put €20 million into the project with plans already submitted to Galway County Council.

The GAA paid €2.8 million for the site during the boom but weren’t able afford to turn it into the Centre of Excellence for hurlers and footballers.  And with interest rates seriously damaging Galway GAA’s financial status, they sold it for what’s believed to be less than €1 million.

Luke and Brian Comer purchased the property and now hope to create a base for bringing through future Galway United player and Irish internationals.

“The plan is to put some of our best underage talent on a proper footing and this is the only way to do it,” said Luke Comer to Declan Tierney from the Connacht Tribune.  “It requires proper investment but I believe that we will see the rewards in five or six years and definitely before 10 years.

“We have been investing in Galway United for many years but they need a proper structure in which to be successful.  Otherwise, they will just continue as they are and we are not happy to see that situation.

“Our ambition is to have Galway as the biggest Centre of Excellence in the country.

“Galway will be the place to go for some of the top young soccer players who want to make it a career.  That is what we want.”

After a disappointing season where they only finished sixth, Galway United will remain in the Airtricity League First Division in 2019.

Galway mourns the loss of a legend – Keith ‘Disconaut’ O’Hanlon

0
Galway News - Deaths - Loss of a Legend - Keith 'Disconaut' O'Hanlon

Keith O’Hanlon of the Disconauts tragically passed away one week ago on October 11, 2018.

One of the finest DJs in Ireland for more than 20 years, Keith was beloved by many in Galway as part of long-standing local DJ/drum collective the Disconauts.

The Disconauts – including Keith, Pádraic O’Connor, and drummer Mark Logan – have been spinning disco funk around town since the 90s.

Keith’s unexpected passing shook the local music community to its very core.

He had touched so many lives around the world that he was even given a shoutout on Melbourne radio in Australia.

Known and loved for his quick wit, warmth, and love of music, he leaves a massive hole in Galway’s nightlife that will be felt for years to come.

But there has been an outpouring of love and support from Keith’s many friends and family, who have shared stories, photos, and – above all – music.

Here are some of the most poignant public online tributes to the Galway music legend.

And a person called “Q” wrote:

“Like so many of us, I’ve been simply floored by the news of the passing of our disco brother Keith. As we collectively pick ourselves off life’s big crazy dance floor, a few retrospective thoughts, before I head west to say goodbye.

“We have been so very lucky to have the Disconauts in our collective lives. It was like having Eric Elwood at Connacht, Eamonn Deacy at Galway United, Joe Canning with the hurlers or Ja Fallon with the footballers.

“Some of the very best around, playing right here at home. Yeah, our guys. And what’s more, they let us in to their world with such open arms. And Keith, always with such a big heartening hug and absolutely cracking tunes.

“And no more than Cork in its 90’s heyday, the Galway vibe has become a gorgeous way of life, so embracing to so many people from so many walks of life who meet up and dance the night – and often their troubles – away. The Disconauts dance floor was love, therapy and healing – all beautifully rolled in to one.

“It is only as I watch my nephew and nieces grow up that I appreciate what is truly innate in us – singing, laughing, dancing and having fun – attributes that we often forget as we grow older and sometimes more cynical in an ever challenging world.

“Through music, amazing vibes and that exquisitely warm west of Ireland welcoming atmosphere – Keith, Padraic, Mark and so many more helped remind us of what is both innate – and most important…

“Thank you Keith for all the music, all the memories and for reminding of what truly matters. The most lasting legacy we can return in tribute is to keep on dancing.

“Massive love & to Padraic, your family and many friends. From your extended disco clan, we’ll miss you so much bro.” -Q.

And because no obituary for a music legend would be complete without music, here are a couple of the Disconauts’ mixes:

Rest in Peace Keith.

LGFA: Monivea/Abbey Win First under 14 Title

Monivea Abbey u14

Monivea/Abbey won their first ever county under 14 A ladies football title last Sunday (14th October) after coming through Claregalway 3-8 to 3-5.

A cracking game that went to extra-time, the teams were finished level at 2-7 to 3-4 in normal time before Monivea/Abbey edged ahead.

After 20 mins Monivea/Abbey were 2-1 to 0-0 down. Tara Maher got the ball on her own 45 and ran all the pitch to get their first point. Then Lauren Keary added two frees and Niamh Burke put one over from 30 yards. At half-time, Claregalway led 2-2 to 0-4.

Monivea/Abbey started the second half with a point from Rachel Gannon and a goal from Keary to get back level. Then a point from Burke and Anna Murphy put them two ahead.

However, Claregalway responded with a deflected goal to retake the lead before adding two white flags for a three-point advantage.

But Monivea/Abbey wouldn’t be denied and in the third minute of added time, Keary got the ball on the wing and made a powerful run through the Claregalway defence before a thunder strike to the roof of the net to send it into 20 of extra time.

And Keary completed her hat-trick with the only score of first period of extra time. The second half was very defensive and Burke put over a point to put four between them. When Claregalway scored a free that was the last score. Monivea/Abbey won by 3-8 to 3-5.

Scorers – Monivea/Abbey: Lauren Keary 3-2, Niamh Burke 0-3, Tara Maher 0-1, Rachel Gannon 0-1, Anna Murphy 0-1.

It capped off a busy weekend of underage finals with eight titles decided. Naomh Mhuire, Salthill/Knocknacarra and An Spideal all secured cup glory. And there were shield successes for Bearna, Micheal Breathnach, Bearna and St. Mary’s.

The purchase of the Headford road dealership with make the Sheils Motor Group the largest single dealer of Honda and Ford cars in Ireland.

Sheils will see their annual turnover double to more than €50 million, shipping 2,500 cars.

Galway socks company, Irish Socksciety, has celebrated its first birthday by joining forces with Irish Artist Shane O’Malley to launch its first artist edition socks.

Irish Socksciety, which has made its way into the sock drawers of people all over Ireland, Europe and as far as Australia, was born out of love for Ireland but it has become the passion of co-founders Alex’s and Joanna’s lives.

Artist Shane O’Malley emerged from Ireland’s vibrant graffiti subculture and works in the mediums of paint, murals and art installations.

He stole Alex’s and Joanna’s hearts with the bold colours and simple geometric shapes to communicate challenging concepts.

O’Malley’s work focuses on the themes of identity, mental and emotional health, journey and self-hood, making it a very powerful pairing with the sock designers who believe that even socks can be a good medium to carry a happy and inspiring message.

“Although we are celebrating our first year in the socks business it feels like we’ve been doing it for many years,”said Joanna Zalech, co-owner of Irish Socksciety.

“It’s all down to the people, the laughs, the orders, the awards, the colour pallet, the letters and postal orders received from the eldest of fans and hugs received from the youngest, the press, the trade shows and all of the thousands of socks that the us two Polish gals have produced in the past months.”

“Visionary” Kinvara boardwalk deserves government support, says Galway TD

0
kinvara news galway daily

The proposal by Kinvara Community Council to develop a seaside boardwalk connecting Kinvara village to Dunguaire Castle is visionary and deserving of government support.

That’s according to Minister Ciaran Cannon who says an application for funds to bring the project through the design and planning process has now been submitted by Galway County Council.

Minister Michael Ring, who is responsible for the administration of the funding programme, visited Kinvara earlier this year to meet with Kinvara Community Council and see the site for the boardwalk development.

Minister Cannon said: “I am pleased that Galway Co. Council has now submitted an application for funds to support the design and planning phase of the development of this boardwalk.

“This would be the most exciting amenity to be developed in South Galway for decades. The boardwalk would connect the much visited Dunguaire Castle to Kinvara village and would in itself become a major tourist attraction.

“I invited Minister Ring to Kinvara last April so that he could see the potential of this project and meet with the members of Kinvara Community Council.”

Galway politicians react to Budget 2019 and its impact on Galway

0
galway politicans

The budget is always one of the most anticipated announcements of the calendar year. It provides an opportunity for political representatives from all sides of the spectrum to give their thoughts on the direction the country is taking.

The impact of last week’s budget applies as much to Galway as anywhere else and lays down the course the county will take over the next year.

Due to the undeniable importance of the budget, political representatives around Galway have shared their opinions on this year’s budget and what it means for Galway.

Éamon Ó Cuív – Fianna Fáil

Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív told Galway Daily that there was very little in the budget that will radically improve the face of Galway.

Although Ó Cuív praised Fianna Fáil for obtaining a commitment on affordable housing over the next three years, he expressed great concern over the general state of the housing problem in Galway.

The Galway TD went on to say how homelessness and the housing crisis continue unabated in Galway city.

Ó Cuív expressed his view that there seemed to be no end in sight and points the blame at the reluctance of the government to build local authority houses over the last six years.

Conor Burke – Solidarity

Conor Burke, who is a local activist with the party Solidarity, castigated the budget as a Fine Gael handout to landlords and property developers.

He added to his condemnation by expressing his view that Fine Gael and the Independent Alliance serve the interests of the landlords, property developers and vulture funds and that this budget is a testament to that.

Burke explained his concern for the rights of tenants in the aftermath of the budget. The local activist claimed the budget provides the perfect excuse for landlords to get around rent caps in Galway City.

He described a clause in the legislation that allows landlords the right to evict tenants if substantial work or renovations are to be carried out on the property.

Burke said landlords use this scheme to evict tenants, carry out work and then put the property back on the market at the current market rate which has increased year on year.

He went on to say how the budget has incentivised landlords to do exactly this by offering zero interest loans on such refurbishments.

Mairéad Farrell – Sinn Féin

Local Sinn Féin councillor Mairéad Farrell hit out at the government for not costing health proposals in the budget.

Mairéad doubled down on this criticism stating the lack of costings were indicative of the government’s cynical approach to politics.

Cllr. Farrell referred to the fact that this year the health section of the budget unlike every other section, has little or no costings on the measures that are proposed for health and slammed this as unacceptable.

She claimed ‘the health section of the budget looked like it was calculated on the back of an envelope’ while lambasting a budget which, she says doesn’t cover the most basic costings for additional measures in the health service.

Sinn Féin’s alternative budget, she said, showed exactly how you could fund and deliver new services, costing the measures and showing it could be done in a sustainable and fair way.

Niall Ó Tuaithail – Social Democrats

Niall Ó Tuathail expressed his dismay at the missed opportunity of this budget to tackle the health and housing crisis.

The Social Democrats candidate spoke to Galway Daily about the cost of living being out of control.

Ó Tuathail laid a portion of the blame on the housing crisis and along with the state of the health service and claimed that a floundering health service leads to more people to opt for private health insurance which increases the cost of living for ordinary people.

Ó Tuathail spoke of the principles of social democracy and investing heavily in public services which lead to more value for money in the long run referencing the Scandinavian model as evidence for this.

He rounded off by expressing his disappointment that the Sláintecare Report had yet to be properly implemented two years on.

Hildegarde Naughton – Fine Gael

Galway Fine Gael TD Hildegarde Naughton alluded to the increased spending on education and the increased childcare supports for families because of the budget.

She highlighted the total of €674 million the Department of Education and Skills will receive.

The Galway city-based TD focused on her delight that education has received substantial additional funding and states she is only too aware of the needs of teachers and pupils across Galway.

She listed the main measures relating to schools.

These measures ranged from 1,300 additional posts in schools to the 5% increase in school’s capitation from September 2019, with an increase of €10 million in school funding over the 2019/20 school year.

The Fine Gael representative also illustrated how the increase of €90 million to early learning and childcare supports would make childcare costs more affordable to Galway parents.

You can’t stroll through local shops without a start from Halloween, which is front and center already, everywhere you look. The holiday is still weeks away, but the costumes and decorations are up, out and ready for shoppers of all ages.

This year, WebLoyalty predicts that Irish consumers will spend €41-million on Halloween. That’s about the same as was spent in 2017, officials say that although it’s not an increase it does show that Halloween is holding stead in it’s aim to become a serious contender for holiday spending with retailers.

They predict ‘Glamoween’ a thing this year, already seeing spikes in sales of glitter, glue-on bling, ghoulish make-up and temporary tattoos.

And of course the spookiest part of it all, is that Christmas is already edging out Halloween merchandise.
