More time sought to build 22 homes in Headford for the second time

Galway daily news Knocknacarra social housing

Galway County Council has decided to extend the planning permission for a 22 home development at Deerpark, Headford.

The development, when completed, will consist of 10 four-bedroom semi-detached houses, 8 five bedroom semi-detached houses, and 4 six bedroom semi-detached houses with a garage.

The development will be an extension to the existing estate at Deerpark Woods in Headford.

Permission for this development was originally given by the county council ten years ago in August 2008, subject to 23 planning conditions.

In 2013, after the crash that stalled or killed many housing projects outright, planning permission was extended by a further five years.

This fresh application for more time is being made under Extension of Duration provisions in the Planning and Development (Amendment) Regulations circulated by Minister Eoghan Murphy last year.

According to this application, so far the works that have been done amount to creating a vehicular access, erecting site hoarding around the boundary, and placing a portacabin on site.

Galway County Council decided to grant the extension of duration with two conditions attached.

The cost of a Galway bungalow will get you a villa with a pool in four countries

0
Galway Daily news The cost of a bungalow in Menlo will get you a villa with a pool in four countries

A four bedroom bungalow has been listed for sale in Menlo by O’Donnell & Joyce Auctioneers Galway for €350,000, but that same money would get you a villa with a pool in four different European countries.

The bungalow

That is basically what we’ve come to expect from buying a home in Ireland, especially during this housing crisis. But it’s far from the norm elsewhere.

The Irish Times took a look around the European property market to see what could be found for the same money, and came back with some pretty spectacular results.

In the boot heel of Italy, north of Brindisi, sits this beautiful villa with its own patch of land, because as we all know, us Irish have a thing about land.

This country residence comes with its own pool, veranda, and olive grove, for a discerning customer who wants to sneer at people who just have a mere vegetable patch, or herb pots.

But don’t let the classical touch fool you, it’s fully modernised with outdoor lighting, home surveillance, and an indoor and outdoor speaker system that takes surround sound to the next level.

This darling little spot can be found in the in the Greek Peloponnese, in the hills overlooking the port city of Kalamata on Messinia Bay.

Full disclosure, it doesn’t have its own dedicated olive grove. But it is surrounded by olive groves, so there’s that. If that’s a deal breaker for you, no-one’s judging.

This modern, open plan home has “a good balance of balconies and terraces” according to the agent, who knows well that having too many balconies is the worst.

If the pool (pictured) isn’t doing it for you, you’re just five minutes drive away from several white, sandy beaches.

This isn’t even the same Spanish villa with a pool that the Irish Times found, there’s just so so many out there. Again, for the same price as a bungalow.

This villa in the province of Andalusia has a large terrace leading to the pool, while inside there’s three large, airy bedrooms, lounges, and a pantry.

It comes with 10,000m² of land. 4000m² of that is a wonderful garden, a tropical paradise maintained by local gardeners, The rest of the land is, you guessed it, an olive grove.

The house has its privacy in the hills, but is still only 20 minutes drive from the city of Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

This four bedroom French chalet in the Pyrenees might be out in the sticks, but talk about that view.

Sadly, there are no olives but then its not really the climate for them is it?

Sitting on a half acre of land near the small hamlet Payrac in the Lot this chalet also includes an old barn that could be converted into guest house, villain’s lair, or a climate controlled greenhouse if you just can’t live without the olive trees.

Galway TD calls for vacancies on Tús and RSS schemes to be filled without delay

0
Galway daily news Eamon Ó Cuiv fired from Fianna Fail frontbench

All vacant places on Community Employment Scheme, the Tús Scheme and the Rural Social Scheme should be filled without delay, according to Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív.

The Fianna Fáil TD also called for Minister for Employment Affairs & Social Protection Regina Doherty to change the rules governing the schemes to allow participants to stay on these schemes longer in the event of no other suitable applicants being available to fill them.

Deputy Ó Cuív said: “All of these schemes provide important and worthwhile services in their communities while at the same time employing local people.

“Despite the high demand for these places, there are a number of schemes which still have substantial vacancies.  For instance, there are 380 vacant places on the Rural Social Scheme, while the Community Employment Scheme fares much worse, with 4,850 vacancies, and Tús has 1,847 unfilled places.

“There are still a large number of unemployed people anxious to get a place on one of these schemes, but under the current rules many will not qualify because they may have had a place on a scheme before.

“I am urging Minister Regina Doherty to relax the rules so that in the event of no new applications to a certain scheme, the current participants would be allowed to remain on the scheme.”

The Galway TD said that the Tús Scheme, in particular, is very constrained as people are only allowed to stay on it for one year.

“I don’t believe this is in the best interests of the community organisations or the participants and I would like the Minister to sanction a second year for participants, if there are no new local applications,” he said.

“This would allow a continuity of services and would allow participants build up more experience.

“I find it heart-breaking when I meet people on these seems who are enjoying the work that they are doing but are being told that they have to go back on Jobseekers Allowance once their year is over.

“We have to face the reality that there are many people for whom community employment is more suitable, and who simply would not secure a job outside of these schemes.

“The government appears to be failing to grasp this, and is also not recognising the important work that is undertaken on these schemes in providing vital services in communities up and down the country.”

Galway Environmental Network asks locals to get involved in city planning

Galway Daily news Galway Environmental Network to hold workshop on city planning

Galway Environmental Network is inviting the people of Galway to give their input on the future of our city at the ‘You City, Your Say: Be Part of It’ workshop.

At the meeting next weekend, local and international experts on architecture, design, and environmental sustainability will talk about what goes into city planning.

But this is meant to be a participatory workshop, so between those speakers there will be lots of input from the audience and public participation invited.

Between those two sides, it hoped that this planning session will be able to identify the principles that should underpin what future we want for Galway, and drive city planning.

The Galway Environmental Network is a coalition of individuals and groups that came together this summer to protect the environment across Galway.

This meeting is the first event organised by the Galway Environmental Network, which was officially launched by Mayor of Galway Niall McNelis at the Loving Galway festival this week.

The keynote speakers at the meeting will be Frank Monahan, from Architecture on the Edge; Rosie Webb, senior architect with Limerick City and County councils; Professor Kevin Leyden, Joint Director of NUIG’s Whitaker Institute’s research group in sustainable communities; with many more.

The session will take place at the PorterShed worspace off Eyre Square next Saturday, September 29 at 1:45pm, lasting until 8pm that night.

Attendance is free, but anyone going must book a ticket ahead of time which can be done here.

This is an opportunity people shouldn’t miss to show that environmental concerns and sustainability should be baked into city planning, not just a box in need of ticking on regulatory requirements.

Galway entrepreneurs build business on the foundation of Irish Heritage

0
galway entrepreneurs galway news

Two young Galway entrepreneurs have built a business for the future, on the foundation of the past. Ken Kinneen and Dylan Commons have figured out just how to mix the two for success.

In fact they have struck a number of important balances with IrishCreation.com.

The basic idea is to educate the public on authentic Irish traditions and why they endure. Then they offer those traditions in high quality jewelry that celebrates Irish heritage and lasts for generations.

What is the trinity knot? Where did the Claddagh ring design actually come from? Is the Salmon of Knowledge really about a salmon? Why are there high crosses in Ireland? What do all the traditions stand for and which ones most closely stand for your heritage in your own mind?

They want you to have the information to understand the history behind them all, and the opportunity to wear that heritage in high quality gold and silver jewelry. To do that, they are combining mentors and experience from the past with the power of the Internet. The result is you can learn about your heritage, choose how to wear it and have it delivered directly to your door.

There are a lot of opportunities to pick up souvenirs of Ireland.

But t-shirts and tea towels don’t last. Finding just what you see as a true celebration of your heritage, designed and handmade in high quality jewelry of silver and gold is something that represents true heritage and Irish workmanship.

Entrepreneurs, Kinneen and Commons are relying on the mentorship of Noel Finan who is a family friend and 30-year private diamond dealer.

He sees promise in his young counterparts and their venture with the newest in computer technology and marketing.

They have also partnered and only deal with an exclusive, longtime jewelry supplier who creates each piece of top quality jewelry from his workshop in Wicklow.

It’s a product with deep roots in the past, putting the power of the Internet to use for education, orders and delivery.

You can access their work from anywhere in the world, learn about your heritage and order exactly what you see as the perfect reflection of it.

It is created to order, and delivered to your door anywhere in the world.

Check out the stories of Irish history and see how they tie it all together in top quality jewelry that will last for generations to come at www.IrishCreation.com.

Clifden Arts Festival ends with commemoration for local World War One victims

Galway Daily life & style Clifden Arts Festival commemorates local World War One victims

Today is the final day of Clifden Arts Festival, and the fortnight of events is closing with a performance commemorating those from the area who died in World War One.

Galway Tribal Choir and Cantairí Connemara will perform The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.

Raphaela Mangan is the mezzo-soprano, and Mark Keane will conduct.

This anti-war piece of music, based on a Catholic mass, shows the horrors of war and contains a hope for peace.

The music will be interspersed with World War One film clips from Big Idea Films, and the performance takes place in a period air raid shelter built at Clifden Mart.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, which claimed an estimated 16 million lives between the soldiers and civilians killed.

Over 200,000 Irish people went to fight in the war, an act that was highly divisive at the time when Ireland was entering into its revolutionary period.

According to a memorial roll kept by the Clifden and Connemara Heritage Society, 49 men from West Connemara lost their lives in WWI.

This is the final event of Clifden Arts Festival that’s been running for the past two weeks.

The performance is on twice tonight, Sunday September 23, at 6pm and 8pm at Clifden Mart, admission is €15.

Event organisers have noted that there is no wheelchair access for this performance.

State of the art Tuam fire station becomes operational

0
Galway daily news Three people hospitalised after Galway City house fire

Fire fighters in Galway have gotten a major boost this week as a state of the art €2.4 million fire station has officially opened in Tuam.

The new station on Milltown road officially became operational this week, as fire fighters moved from the old station on High Street that has served the area for over six decades.

As well as protecting the local area from fires, the new station includes a training base for fire fighters which will benefit the entire Galway region.

Work began on new fire station last November with funding from the National Directorate Fire Emergency Management under the Department of Local Government.

It was part of a €40 million investment to upgrade fire stations around the country.

Minister for Local Government Eoghan Murphy is expected to “officially” open the new fire station some time later this year.

The fire station was built by Galway company Carey Building Contractors, eight years after the site was purchased by Galway County Council.

Warning that some children with special needs being blocked from ECCE preschool scheme

0
Galway Daily news Planning permission for Bullaun preschool

Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte has said that Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone must ensure that rules around the Early Care and Education Scheme are flexible for children with special needs.

The ECCE is government scheme that provides early childhood care and education for preschool aged children until they transition into Primary School.

The state pays a fee to participating daycare and playschools, and they provide free services for the children.

But Deputy Rabbitte has said that she’s been contacted by parents of children with special needs who have been told their children cannot use the ECCE because they’ve also been receiving the HSE’s Pre-School Specialised Support.

“This issue applies to a very small number of children, and I do feel that if parents, childcare providers and development specialists are all in agreement,” Deputy Rabbite said.

“That if a child will do better by attending preschool in addition to undergoing Pre-School Specialised support; then it should be facilitated.”

The Fianna Fáil TD praised the work of the scheme, but said that inconsistencies in its rules must be corrected to ensure that everyone has equal access, regardless of their circumstances.

“The benefit of ECCE is that children can learn and play with other children, something which is just as important for children with disabilities as it is for those without.”

“If we, for all intents and purposes, ban children who are getting HSE Pre-School Specialised support from attending an ECCE placement, we severely hamper the socialisation process which is crucial in terms of preparing children for school and other learning settings,” Deputy Rabbitte said.

From this year, children can use the ECCE when they turn two years and eight months old, and are entitled to use it until they enter primary school.

That’s provided they’re not more than five years and six months old at the end of the preschool year.

“Pre-School Specialised support does not replace, nor can it replace, ECCE. They are different programmes of support, and while we need to be cognisant of overall budgets, the number of children that is affected by this apparent prohibition is very limited,” Deputy Rabbitte said.

“Stopping children with special needs that require Pre-School Specialised support from attending ECCE will damage the ability of those children to integrate into mainstream schooling in the future.”

NUI Galway partners with Vietnam to develop climate resilient agriculture

0
Galway Daily news NUI Galway is partnering with Vietnam to create more climate resistant agriculture

NUI Galway is partnering with Vietnam’s National University of Agriculture to create new food systems that can resist the damage being done to the world’s food supply by climate change.

The Ryan Institute at recently hosted a delegation from Vietnam to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities.

They will cooperate on a research and education programme involving collaborative projects and a student/teacher exchange between Galway and Vietnam.

Present for the signing ceremony were NUI Galway President, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh and Professor Nguyen Tat Canh, Vice-President of VNUA.

Professor Charles Spillane, Director of the Ryan Institute, emphasised that climate change poses a real risk to our food supply.

“The agriculture and food systems of Ireland and Vietnam both face mounting challenges due to climate change and adverse weather events.

“On a global level, for the third year in a row the number of undernourished people has risen, increasing to nearly 821 million in 2017, from around 804 million in 2016.”

“Gains over recent decades in reducing levels of food insecurity are now being set back by adverse climate events in many regions of the world.”

Ireland’s heatwave and water shortages this summer caused great difficulty for farmers, particularly cattle farmers who had to dip into their fodder stocks in the middle of summer because there wasn’t enough grass.

Five students from NUIG’s Masters in Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security have already been conducting research in Vietnam for the past two years.

The research they’ve been doing has been an important contribution towards creating more climate resilient agriculture and food systems across South East Asia.

The delegation from VNUA met with Minster of State for International Development and Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon during Irish Aid’s public consultation on Ireland’s new international development policy.

Representatives from NUIG will be returning the favour with a visit to Vietnam this October.

A joint workshop between NUIG and VNUA on developing new food systems is planned for World Food Day on Tuesday, October 16 in Hanoi.

Taking part will be NUI Galway, VNUA, Irish Aid, the global CCAFS program, CIAT Vietnam and Vietnamese ministry representatives.

“The development of climate-resilient agriculture and food systems will require multi-disciplinary research to generate climate-smart innovations that will need to be deployed at scale in all countries,” said Professor Spillane.

The works already being done by NUIG students in Vietnam is being coordinated through the Irish embassy in Hanoi by Irish Aid.

Connacht Scarlets

Back row Robin Copeland is set to make his Connacht debut as Andy Friend’s side take on Scarlets in the Guinness PRO14 in the Sportsground on Saturday today (Saturday).

Copeland’s inclusion is one of six changes to the Connacht side that took on Edinburgh last weekend. Irish International Bundee Aki is also included in the starting XV having come off the bench in Murrayfield to make his first appearance of the season.

Aki forms a midfield partnership with Tom Farrell who returns after recovering from a stomach bug that ruled him out last weekend.

Winger Cian Kelleher is named on the wing and is part of a back three that includes Matt Healy on the opposite wing and Tiernan O’Halloran at full back.

Prop Denis Buckley is back in at loosehead to make his third start of the season while Gavin Thornbury is named alongside Quinn Roux in the second row.

Copeland’s inclusion at number 8 sees him named in a back row that also features team captain Jarrad Butler at openside and blindside Sean O’Brien.

“We have been really impressed with Robin in the pre-season both on and off the field,” said Head Coach Andy Friend to Connacht Rugby’s official website.  “His energy and maturity have been a big addition to the wider group.

“He played 40 minutes for the Eagles side last weekend and he came through that ok after a niggly injury, so he is good to go for Scarlets”.

“Scarlets are a quality side and we expect a huge challenge from them. They are one of the top teams in this competition, so it is a massive game for us. We have a really healthy competition in our squad at the moment and that is exactly what we need as the big games keep coming”.

Connacht: Tiernan O’Halloran; Cian Kelleher, Tom Farrell, Bundee Aki, Matt Healy; Jack Carty, Kieran Marmion; Denis Buckley, Dave Heffernan, Finlay Bealham; Gavin Thornbury, Quinn Roux; Sean O’Brien, Jarrad Butler, Robin Copeland.

Replacements: Tom McCartney, Peter McCabe, Dominic Robertson-McCoy, Ultan Dillane, Colby Fainga’a, Caolin Blade, Craig Ronaldson, Niyi Adeolokun.

Connacht face Scarlets in the 2018-19 Guinness PRO14 Championship on Saturday, 22nd September.  Kick-off at the Sportsground at 5.15pm.

GALWAY GAA: “I Felt it was Appropriate at This Stage” – John Hynes

John Hynes

Galway GAA CEO John Hynes announced his resignation on Thursday (20th September) when he sent a letter out to all the county’s GAA club secretaries.

It comes on the back of reports that details of an internal audit of the board’s finances, ordered by county treasurer Mike Burke, are going to be made public and Hynes described the timing of his announcement as “unfortunate.”

“The overall finances in Galway GAA are in a solid stage,” said Hynes to the Keith Finnegan Show on Galway Bay FM on Friday.

“I just felt that it was appropriate at this stage to announce my intention not to renew my contract of employment with the Central Council of Croke Park to allow the club ample time to identify, select and elect a new county secretary at the upcoming convention in December.

“The timing is unfortunate. There is no doubt about that. The overall finances in Galway GAA are in a solid state and things are improving. I think that will be evident this year at the county convention when the county treasurer presents the financial report for the year.

“Our income streams are up. We have generated an awful lot of goodwill over the last number of years, particularly because of our senior hurling team’s involvement in All-Ireland finals.

“And the very significant progress that’s been made by our football teams over the past number of years.”

Hynes was Galway’s first full-time secretary since 2011 and Seamus O’Grady will fulfill the role in a temporary capacity until the county’s Annual Convention, probably in December (2018).

“I write to inform you that I have decided, for personal reasons, not to seek a renewal of my contract of employment with Central Council, as the Full-Time County Secretary of Galway GAA,” stated Hynes in his letter to the club secretaries.

“It was a huge honour for me to be appointed as Full-Time County Secretary in 2012 and I am happy that I was able to make some contribution to the advancement of Galway GAA over the past seven years.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all Clubs for their support and especially to you, as Club Secretary for your courtesy, encouragement and assistance.”
