Galway Daily news Galway East filled with no change

The counting has concluded in Galway East on the eight count with no change in the lineup of TDs from 2016.

Ciarann Cannon (FG) and Anne Rabbitte (FF) were both returned to their seats in Galway East with the redistribution of surplus votes from Sean Canney.

The Independent TD was returned to his seat on the previous count with more than 1,600 surplus votes past the quota.

In the final count Ciaran Cannon came in just over the quota with 10,890 votes while Anne Rabbitte was deemed elected to the final seat with 10,022.

Louis O’Hara narrowly missed out on a seat as the first ever Sinn Féin TD, finishing with just over 9,700 votes

Galway East: Sean Canney surges to re-election

Galway Daily news Sean Canney elected in Galway East

Sitting Galway East TD Sean Canney has become the first candidate elected in the constituency tonight.

Canney surged over the quota in Galway East of 10,631 on the seventh count of the night, finishing at 12,292 votes.

His 1,661 surplus votes will now be redistributed to the candidates competing for the final two seats.

The remaining three standing are Ciaran Cannon (FG), Anne Rabbitte (FF), and Louis O’Hara (SF), with only two seats available.

Up until the last count O’Hara looked quite likely to secure a seat, but he suffered badly in the redistribution of Peter Roche’s (FG) 6,973 votes, only picking up 612 transfers for a current count of 9,411

He’s slipped from second position in the polls to fourth and last on the seventh count, with Ciaran Cannon in second with 9,990 after picking up over 2,500 votes from his party colleague.

Fianna Fáil’s Anne Rabbitte is also back in with a fighting chance to hold onto her seat at 9,535 votes.

This puts her in third place, but leaves just over 100 votes between her and O’Hara. The final results will be seen shortly after Canney’s surplus is redistributed.

Galway West: Sinn Féin take the lead on 3rd count

0
Galway daily news Sinn Féin takes the lead in Galway West

The third count from Galway West is in and Mairéad Farrell of Sinn Féin has taken the lead with transfers from Solidarity-PBP.

Farrell is neck is neck with Fianna Fáil’s Éamon Ó Cuív for the top spot in Galway West, with the former city councillor leading with 8,744 votes to Ó Cuív’s 8,566 at the last count.

Not far behind them, and also looking secure to return to his seat is Independent Noel Grealish, who has 8,196.

Though these three are well ahead of the competition, there is still a substantial gap to bridge with the quota of 10,057 to be deemed elected.

Both of Solidarity-PBP’s candidates Joe Loughnane and Conor Burke were eliminated on the second count, with almost 1,000 votes between the to redistribute.

The two big winners were Catherin Connolly and Mairéad Farrell, with the SF candidate taking 258 while the outgoing Independent received 215.

Connolly (5,693) is currently neck and neck with Fine Gael’s Hildegarde Naughton (5,645) for the fourth and fifth seats in the constituency.

But those final two seats are still far from sown up as Seán Kyne is still fighting for his seat from not far behind with 5,314 votes.

Neither he nor Naughton have had much luck attracting transfers so far, and both have been outdone by Catherine Connolly to a significant degree.

Still circling the outside is Ollie Crowe of Fianna Fáil who is in seventh place with 5,207, who will no doubt be hoping to pick up transfers in the city where he is strongest.

The third count has seen Aontú’s Cormac Ó Corcorán eliminated, and his 1,118 votes redistributed.

Roscommon-Galway: Michael Fitzmaurice re-elected handily

Galway Daily news Exemption for farmers on burning green waste welcomed

Independent Michael Fitzmaurice is the first TD elected in Galway, passing the quota on the 1st count in Roscommon-Galway.

The 1st count results gave Michael Fitzmaurice 13,077 votes, leaving him with more than 1,500 votes over the quota of 11,404.

In second place is his fellow Independent Denis Naughten who also stands likely to be returned to his seat with 8,422 first preference votes.

Sinn Féin are look to be in a strong position to return a TD in all three Galway constituencies tonight, with Ciara Kerrane doing very well at 8,003 here.

If these results bear out Roscommon-Galway could make history by not returning a candidate from either Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil.

The rest of the competition is trailing by a significant margin in this three seat constituency, with Fine Gael’s Aisling Dolan behind at 5,466 first preferences.

Fianna Fáil’s Eugene Murphy would need to pull off an astonishing turnaround to hold onto his seat after only receiving 4,945 votes in the first round.

Michael Fitzmaurice’s excess 1,673 votes will now be redistributed before the counting goes on to eliminate candidates.

Storm Ciara brings fresh Orange flood warning for Galway

0
Galway daily news Galway Daily news Status Orange weather warning issued for Storm Isha

A Status Orange weather warning for heavy winds from Storm Ciara has been issued for Galway with a “substantial risk” of flooding.

The weather alert from Met Eireann states that Storm Ciara will continue to produce very strong westerly winds in coastal areas throughout Monday.

Winds with a sustained speed of 65-80km/hr are forecast by Met Eireann, with gusts expected to reach up to 130km/hr.

A combination of Spring Tides and high seas will result in a significant risk of coastal flooding.

The status orange warning applies to county on the Atlantic coast including Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, Clare, and Kerry.

It will come into effect at 6am on Monday morning and remain in force until 8pm that evening.

A separate snow and ice warning will also be in effect throughout all of Monday, with some snowfall accumulations expected in the west.

A Status Yellow weather warning is also in place this evening until 8pm, with strong winds from Storm Ciara across the country.

Galway East: Last run for the final seat as Killilea eliminated

0
Galway Daily news Galway East Killilea eliminated

Galway East is down to three candidates jockeying for the final seat after Donal Killilea was eliminated in the 5th count.

Independent Sean Canney still leads comfortably in Galway East, with 8,785 votes after picking up more than 450 transfers from Eoin Madden of the Greens.

Though almost 2,000 votes shy of the quota of 10,631 votes, Canney looks highly likely to be returned to his seat.

Louis O’Hara was the big winner from Eoin Madden’s transfers after the previous count, picking up 792 votes and putting himself less than 350 behind Seán Canney with 8,441 votes.

The Sinn Féin candidate now stands in a very strong position to take the second seat in this constituency.

Killilea’s transfers of 5,171 votes will be key to who takes the final seat, either Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael.

Anne Rabbitte is currently currently trailing both of Fine Gael’s candidates with 6,121 votes.

But she will hope to get a substantial number of transfers from her party colleague, enough to keep her in the running.

Ahead of her and jockeying between themselves for the third seat are Ciaran Cannon (7,114) and Peter Roche (6,392).

Cannon, a junior minister for the diaspora and international development, currently has a better chance of retaining his seat, with a substantial lead over Roche.

This has opened up over the last five counts, with Roche struggling to pick up transfers after taking 6,034 first preference votes.

Galway East: Labour and Social Democrats eliminated on 3rd count

0
Galway daily news

The third count from Galway East is in, with no candidate elected and both Labour and the Social Democrats eliminated from the running.

Seán Canney still leads the race in Galway East with 8,142 votes after count three, still almost 2,500 shy of the quota, but picking up lots of transfers.

Sinn Féin’s Louis O’Hara is also continuing to make gains, substantially more transfers than both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil in the 2nd and 3rd counts.

O’Hara currently has 7,294 votes and is well positioned to take a seat if he can pick up the momentum from left leaning candidates getting knocked out at the bottom of the list.

Labour’s Marian Spelman and Peter Reid of the Social Democrats have both been eliminated, and their combined votes of just under 2,000 are being redistributed.

The third and final seat is still a scramble, with sitting TD Ciaran Cannon currently ahead with 6,326 votes, closely followed by his party colleague Peter Roche with 6,090.

But they only have a slight lead over Anne Rabbitte, 5,820 votes, who is fighting to hold onto her seat in Galway East.

Rabbitte will be hoping to pick up a lot of transfers from her running mate Donagh Killilea who is trailing in sixth place with 5,004 votes.

Heading into the fourth vote the next candidate who will be eliminated is Eoin Madden of the Green Party, whose substantial pool of votes could tip the scales.

Galway West: Final tally shows Sinn Féin likely to gain seat

0
Galway Daily news Galway West: Final tally shows Sinn Féin likely to gain seat

Sinn Féin look likely to make an historic gain with a seat in Galway West going by the latest tallies, while Eamon Ó Cúiv and Noel Grealish are also secure.

No candidate reached the estimated quota of 9,427 for Galway West, but three are out ahead of the pack with a substantial lead with just two boxes left to open.

Eamon Ó Cúiv is in front and seems likely to be returned to his seat with 8,094 (14.5%) of the vote.

Behind him Sinn Féin will certainly be hopeful of taking a seat, with Mairéad Farrell, who lost out on her city council seat last year, in 2nd place on first preferences with 7,810 (14%).

Noel Grealish is also looking secure in his seat with 7,474 (13.4%) votes.

The final two seats in this constituency will be closely fought, with at least one sitting TD certain to lose out.

Fine Gael’s Hildegarde Naughton (9.2%) and Seán Kyne (8.8%) are both fighting for their seats, as is Independent Catherine Connolly (8.9%).

But also up in the mix is Fianna Fail’s Ollie Crowe (8.4%), making his first run for the Dáil after more than a decade on Galway City Council.

Depending on how the transfers fall after the 1st count in Galway West, Fine Gael could find themselves without any representatives in the five seat constituency.

Galway East: No-one elected on 1st count as Canney holds the lead

0
Galway Daily news EU elections hustings

The first count is in from Galway East and no candidate has been elected yet, with the two lowest performing candidates eliminated.

Sean Canney looks likely to be returned in Galway East, out in front with 7,815 votes.

The independent candidate hasn’t made the quota of 10,631 yet, but holds a lead of over 700 votes on anyone before transfers come in to play.

Polling for the second seat in this district is Louis O’Hara of Sinn Féin, who had an extremely impressive first preference performance, taking 7,108 votes.

So far it seems as if the third seat will be a toss up between two Fine Gael candidates, with just 264 votes between sitting TD Ciaran Cannon (6,298) and Peter Roche (6,034).

Fianna Fáil is trailing behind with Anne Rabbitte (5,762) at risk of losing her seat, and Donagh Killilea (4,932) behind her.

Rabbitte will need to pick up a big boost from transfers to hold onto her seat and hope that O’Hara doesn’t attract many second preferences.

The two lowest performing candidates, Deaglan McCanna (Renua) and David O’Reill (Ind) have been eliminated.

Their 126 and 246 votes will now be redistributed for the second count.

Almost 1,000 homes without electricity in Galway

0
Galway Daily news More than 15,000 properties in Galway without power after Storm Ellen

Just under 1,000 homes and businesses across Galway are without electricity this afternoon due to multiple power outages.

The ESB is still dealing with nationwide electricity outages caused by Storm Ciara this weekend.

A status yellow wind warning remains in force today with winds gusting up to 110km/hr, possibly even higher according to Met Eireann.

Multiple outages in Galway have been repaired since this morning but many more have cropped up since, particularly in the area between Atenry and Claregalway.

On Inis Meain 25 premises remain without power after a fault in Carraroe this morning.

In Curra there are 114 homes without electricity, along with another 169 at Ballycrossaun, Killimor.

Six separate power outages in the Athenry area have left 466 homes and businesses without electricity.

And a final two outages in the Claregalway area are affecting 167 premises.

Snow and Ice warning issued for Storm Ciara aftermath

0
galway daily weather snow and ice warning issued for Galway

Met Eireann has issued a weather warning for snow and ice expected to hit Ireland in the aftermath of Storm Ciara next week.

The status yellow weather warning for snow and ice covers all of Ireland and will last for two days.

It comes into effect at midnight tonight and will remain in force throughout all of Monday and Tuesday.

Over the two days widespread wintry showers are expected with accumulations expected in the west and north according to Met Eireann.

Some travel disruption is also possible as a result of the weather, particularly on higher routes.

Today a status yellow wind warning is in place as Storm Ciara continues to bring high winds of 50-65km/hr and gusts reaching up to up 110km/hr.

The ESB is still dealing with hundreds of homes across Galway which are without electricity this afternoon due to weather conditions.

A Status Orange gale warning is also in effect for westerly winds on all Irish coastal water, with storm force winds forecast tonight along the Atlantic coast.

Election: Canney holds comfortable lead in Galway East

0
Galway Daily news Additional Dog fines will have little effect without more Dog Wardens

The first tally is almost complete in Galway East and it looks like there’s a strong possibility that little will change here.

Seán Canney stormed home from the opening of the first box in Galway East and looks likely to be comfortable re-elected with 7,383 votes or 18.4%

Sinn Féin Louis O’Hara polled extremely well, taking second place among first preferences with 6,525 votes for a 16.3% share.

But with transfers now coming into play it will be a challenge for him to hold onto that lead.

Fine Gael’s two candidates Ciaran Cannon and Peter Roche are both neck and neck in competition for one of the three seats, at 15% and 13.9% vote share respectively.

Fianna Fáil’s Anne Rabbitte also stands a strong chance of being returned to her seat.

Though she is polling 5th after the final tally with 5,508 votes she could push her way up the rankings with transfers, especially from her party colleague Donagh Killilea who sits below her on the rankings.

With the biggest are of uncertainty being which Fine Gael candidate will be claiming a seat it seems strongly possible at this time that the profile of Galway East will not change overmuch from the last Dáil.

Election: Fitzmaurice leads in Roscommon-Galway tallies

0
Galway Daily news Exemption for farmers on burning green waste welcomed

Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice is a shoe in to be returned to his seat, leading the tallies in Roscommon-Galway

Fitzmaurice is currently the clear leader in Roscommon-Galway with 6,431 votes as 54 boxes have been tallied and 86 remain to be counted.

This put the popular rural Independent in a very strong position before transfers have even come into play.

Not far behind him is fellow Independent Denis Naughten who currently holds 5,413 votes and is also likely to be happy with his performance.

The third seat in the constituency is still uncertain. Sinn Féin’s Claire Kerrane is currently polling very well with 4,259 votes.

But will she be able to hold onto that lead against outgoing Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy who is trying to creep up behind with 2,897 votes.

The constituency has been dominated by Independents, which have taken a combined 48% of the vote so far.

Fianna Fáil will also be happy that they are outperforming Fine Gale more than two to one here, taking 19.23% of the vote so far to FG’s 9.4%.

Down the tally the National Party hasn’t claimed even 1 percent of first preference votes, currently at 0.78%.

Not doing much better are People Before Profit at 0.99% and Aontú with 1.07%.

PBP were hit with a late scandal as their candidate for Galway West Joe Loughnane was suspended from the party after allegations emerged that he had been physically aggressive in an incident with a young woman.

General Election: counting underway across Galway

0
Galway daily news

The first count of the election is well underway this morning, with votes being tallied across all three constituencies in Galway.

Last night’s exit polls gave a possible glimpse of how this election might turn, with Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, and Fine Gael tied at roughly 22% each nationally.

In Galway West, with a third of the boxes open Mairéad Farrell of Sinn Féin is in the lead with almost 15% of the vote, followed by Independent Noel Grealish (11.2%),

The next three are running very close with Ollie Crowe of Fianna Fáíl (10.4%), Independent Eamon Ó Cúiv (10.2%), and Ind Catherine Connolly (10%) all neck in neck.

Both of Fine Gael’s current TDs in the constituency Seán Kyne (7.2%) and Hildegarde Naughton (8.6%) look like their having early trouble and could be in danger.

In Galway East Independent Seán Canney is in the lead with 20.9% of the vote, followed by Sinn Féin’s Louis O’Hara with 15.6%.

However he wouldn’t want to get too comfortable there as both Peter Roche (14.6%) and Ciaran Cannon (13.4%) of Fine Gael are close behind, with Fianna Fáíl’s Anne Rabbitte and Donagh Killilea on their heels.

O’Hara is off to a strong start in this election, but the question is whether he will be able to maintain it as transfers come into play.

In Roscommon-Galway Independents Michael Fitzmaurice and Denis Naughten are well out ahead of the pack.

With 64 boxes open Fitzmaurice is leading with 6,025 votes, with Naughten trailing behind him with 5,274 votes

Polling well for the third seat in the constituency is Sinn Féin’s Claire Kerrane with 4,025.

She has a strong lead at this, still early, stage against Eugene Murphy of Fianna Fáil, who is defending his seat and currently holds 2,586 votes.

We’ll have more updates on the election counting as it continues throughout the day.

The largest issue is in Gort, where two power outages have left 240 premises without electricity, followed by Headford where 117 homes are being affected by an outage.

A Status Red marine warning has been issued ahead of Storm Ciara, with violently stormy seas expected in the west and northwest.

The status red alert states that strong south and southwest gales will develop on all Irish coastal waters and the Irish Sea today.

But they will be strongest in the west with winds reaching storm force 10 on coastal waters from Slyne Head to Erris Head to Malin Head.

At times the winds may even reach violent storm force 11 for a time according to Met Eireann.

This is one of multiple weather warnings which have been issued for Galway this weekend with Storm Ciara due to pass by on Sunday.

During this time winds averaging 80km/hr and gusts of up to 130km/hr can be expected.

Galway has already begun to prepare for potential flooding this evening, with overtopping expected in Salthill due to stormy conditions, Spring tides, and high seas.

Car Parks in Salthill have been closed by the city council since 2pm this afternoon and will remain shut until at least after the passage of the orange warning tomorrow.

Galway West candidate Joe Loughnane suspended from PBP

0
Galway Daily news Joe Loughnane suspended from PBP

Galway West PBP candidate Joe Loughnane has been suspended from his party and is stepping down from all organisations he campaigns with.

Joe Loughnane has been suspended from PBP after he was accused by a woman of smashing her phone and spitting on her.

The party confirmed his suspension, with immediate effect, and said that he will face disciplinary action for this.

“The Galway branch of People Before Profit has confirmed that Loughnane has been suspended from the party and will face disciplinary action over his actions.

“The members of People Before Profit Galway are shocked and outraged to learn of the actions of Joe Loughnane.

“We send our solidarity and support to the young woman involved.

“It has come to light this morning that he has been physically aggressive with, and damaged the property of, a young woman.

“There is absolutely no place in a proudly socialist feminist party like People Before Profit for people who behave like he has. Disciplinary action has been initiated by party HQ and he is suspended from the party.

“He does not represent us,” the statement concluded.

Joe Loughnane issued an apology on twitter today after a woman said he smashed her phone and spat on her because she refused to give him her password.

He later released a statement which said “I am suspended from the party with immediate effect and will face disciplinary proceedings. I intend to resign after Roisin’s experience is dealt with officially.

There is nothing I can to say to excuse such behaviour. I should know better. I have been seeing a counsellor and will continue to do so.

“I want to take this opportunity to publicly apologise to Roisin and to ensure everyone that I accept responsibility for my actions.

“This type of behaviour is the very thing the politics I have tried to represent, rallies against. I have let down that politics, I have let down my party, I have let down all my supporters.

“I have let down the women who have supported me.

“I will be stepping down from all organisations I campaign with. I will be making every effort to ensure I fundamentally address how I can exhibit such behaviour while claiming to stand for equality.

Joe Loughnane is one of two Solidarity-PBP candidates running in Galway West alongside Conor Burke.

Galway daily news Galway Daily news Status Orange weather warning issued for Storm Isha

Galway City Council is preparing to deal with flooding from Storm Ciara this evening and on Sunday morning.

Multiple weather warnings are in effect today, and more will be in place tomorrow, as Storm Ciara brings heavy winds, rain, and a risk of flooding to the west.

A Status Orange weather is in place in Galway until 6pm this evening, with sustained winds of 65-85km/hr forecast, along with gusts of up to 120km/hr.

Another orange storm alert issued by Met Eireann today will be in place from 5am to midday on Sunday.

A combination of Spring Tides and high seas as well as stormy conditions will result in a significant risk of coastal flooding in Galway.

The City Council Severe Weather Assessment Team met this morning to prepare for the worst risk of flooding during high tides this evening and early on Sunday.

Overtopping is expected along The Promenade and car parks in Salthill have been closed as of 2pm this afternoon and will remain closed until after high tide tomorrow.

Council road crews will be on standby throughout the day to deal with any issued, and further road closures may be ordered in Salthill as necessary.

The council has also said that it will “continue to monitor the situation and will put further measures in place as necessary on Sunday and throughout Monday”.

Orange weather warning comes into force

Galway Daily weather Wind Warning in effect as crappy day ahead for Galway

A Status Orange weather warning issued for Galway today ahead of the arrival of Storm Ciara on Sunday is now in force.

The orange weather warning states that sustained winds of 65-80km/hr can be expected throughout the day, with gusts reaching up to 12km/hr.

The orange storm alert will remain in place until 6pm this evening, but behind it are two status yellow alerts for all of Ireland which came into play this morning and will remain in place until Sunday night.

Rainfall of up 80mm can be expected this weekend, expected to be strongest in the west and carrying with it a possibility of spot flooding.

Galway also faces flooding due to high winds under one of the yellow alerts due to a combination of stormy conditions, Spring Tides, and high seas.

With Storm Ciara currently expected to pass by the north of Ireland on Sunday it remains to be seen if Met Eireann will be putting out any further orange or red weather warnings this weekend.

There is also concern that the weather will affect turnout for the general election.

Voting got underway at 7am this morning, but the polls will remain open until 10pm tonight, leading to concern that the orange alert could affect turnout throughout the afternoon.

Connemara National Park and Knockma Wood at Tuam have both closed today for safety reasons due to the poor weather as the National Parks and Wildlife Service have issued a nationwide warning to stay away from their parks today.

Galway 2020 opening ceremony cancelled due to weather warnings

Galway daily news Call for further transparency on Galway 2020 finances

The opening ceremony for Galway 2020 which was meant to take place in the Claddagh this evening has been cancelled due to the weather warnings in place today.

Galway 2020 said on Friday evening that they were monitoring the situations, with multiple status yellow and orange weather warnings in place for Galway today.

While yesterday it was still intended to proceed, the organisation said that further updates would be issued on Saturday morning, and the decision has now been made to call off the celebration.

“Galway 2020 is extremely disappointed to announce the cancellation of the finale of our Opening Ceremony this evening due to the severe national weather warnings in place for the whole of today, tonight and tomorrow,” a statement read.

“We have been in constant contact with the relevant authorities since the weather warnings were put in place earlier this week and, in the interests of the safety of the public the weather warnings currently in place mean that it has been deemed unsafe to go ahead.”

“We are saddened for the community cast, our volunteers and the whole team who have worked so hard during the last weeks and months”.

A Status Orange wind warning will be in force from 1pm to 6pm in Galway, with sustained winds of 65-80km/hr expected along with gusts reaching up to 120km/hr.

Beyond that two status yellow alerts for wind and rain are in place this morning and will remain in force until Sunday night as Storm Ciara is expected to batter the west as it passes north of Ireland.

The celebration in South Park which was going to get underway at 6pm would have marked the finale of a week long fire tour through towns around the country, culminating a celebration of music and dance in the city, to be inaugurated by President Michael D Higgins.

No word has been issued yet on what possible rescheduling plans might be made by Galway 2020 for the opening ceremony.
