6 Nations | Here Are 6 of Ireland’s Best Matches

0

In the year 2000, the 5 Nations became the 6 Nations, and since then the Irish rugby team have won 2 Grand Slams, 4 Championship titles, and 5 triple crowns (they beat England, Scotland, and Wales). This is a nice trophy haul, and during this time they have played in some classic 6 Nations matches. I am now going to take you on a trip down memory lane and take a look at some of the very best.

England 15 Ireland 24, 2018

This was a Grand Slam decider, and the Irish players had the opportunity to be just the third Irish team in history to win the Grand Slam. However, there was a steep challenge ahead of them in the shape of an English team that had not lost in 14 matches at Twickenham. Ireland came flying out of the starting blocks and the Twickenham crowd were stunned into complete silence thanks to first half tries from CJ Stander, Jacob Stockdale, Gary Ringrose to give the away side a 21-5 lead at the break. England came fighting back in the second half, but the Irish defence stood firm to ensure that those of a green persuasion would have a great St. Patrick’s Day. This Grand Slam would not have been possible had it not been for Johnny Sexton’s late Drop Goal against France in the opening game of the campaign. Therefore, we can say that this defeat of England in their own backyard was the cherry on top of Ireland’s Grand Slam cake.

I remember this match really well because I was at Twickenham with my grandad, who passed away just two weeks ago. My grandad, also a supporter of Gaelic football, had been following the Irish team for 50 years and the smile that he had on his face when the ref blew the final whistle is something I will never forget. I thought it was because Ireland had won the Grand Slam, but I later found out that he had placed €100 on Ireland to win the Grand Slam before the tournament started. My grandad was a tech savvy guy and used https://www.mybettingsite.uk/ to find the best odds. In his memory, and also to take advantage of some great betting odds, I now use this website.

France 20 Ireland 22, 2014

This was Joe Schmidt’s first 6 Nations Championship in charge of Ireland, and the New Zealander guided Ireland to their first title in five years, which was sealed with a tense win in Paris. This was to be Brian O’Driscoll’s last game for his country and every man put in a monumental effort to ensure that he retired with a bang. Ireland went into this match knowing that anything other than a win would mean that England would win the title as they had beaten Italy earlier on in the day. History was against them as it had been 14 years since they beat France in Paris. Two Sexton tries and seven points from the tee alongside an Andrew Trimble try saw Ireland with a 22-20 lead with just 15 minutes remaining. The French bombarded the Irish tryline for the remainder of the game, but the Irish did not give a quarter. O’Driscoll announced himself on the international stage in Paris, so it was only fitting that he ended his career there with a trophy.

Wales 15 Ireland 17, 2009

It had been just over 60 years since Ireland last won a Grand Slam, and they traveled to Wales with the chance to put that long drought to bed. In a very lively game, Wales led 6-0 at the break thanks to a couple of penalties from Stephen Jones, but Ireland sprung into life in the second period with a try apiece from O’Driscoll and Tommy Bowe. However, Jones knocked over two more penalties to edge his side closer to the Triple Crown. With around 2 minutes left on the clock, Ronan O’ Gara delivered a drop goal to send the traveling Irish fans into raptures. However, the drama was not over. With the last kick of the game, Jones had the opportunity to break Irish hearts with a penalty, but his effort fell just short and Ireland claimed the Grand Slam.

Ireland 43 England 13, 2007

In 2004, Ireland gave the reigning World Champions their first loss at Twickenham in five years, and three years later they arguably got an even more impressive win, albeit at home. Landsdowne Road had been demolished and Ireland were playing at Croke Park while they waited for the new Aviva Stadium to be built. The fact that the English were heading to play their very first match at Croke Park made the encounter historic enough, but Brian Ashton’s England team decided to get some unwanted history by conceding 42 points – the most they ever conceded in the Championship. Some exquisite play between Gordon D’Arcy, O’Gara, O’Driscoll, and Shane Horgan left England flat-footed and Ireland led by 20 points at half-time. Ireland came out firing in the second half too and scored another 20 points to put the English to the sword.

France 25 Ireland 27, 2000

This was the start of a brand new era. As the very first 6 Nations got underway, a young O’Driscoll announced himself on the world rugby stage with a great performance at the Stade de France. At just 21, the outside centre scored three tries to help Ireland to their first win in the French capital since 1972. On this day, a legend was born. It was not just O’Driscoll’s stunning performance that made this game so remarkable, but it was the start of a new period of Irish rugby after a poor World Cup the year before. Alongside O’Driscoll, there were players playing that day such as O’Gara, Peter Stringer, and Simon Easterby – these four players went on to make 524 appearances for their country between them.

Scotland 10 Ireland 40, 2015

Ireland defended their 6 Nations crown thanks to a thumping victory over the Scots at Murrayfield. This was the second game on Super Saturday and after Wales’ thumping 61-20 win over Italy, Ireland knew they had to beat Scotland by at least 21 points if they were to stand a chance of winning the title. A try from Paul O’Connell, two tries from Sean O’Brien and one from Jared Payne alongside three conversions and three penalties from Sexton saw Ireland score 20 points in each half to pile the pressure on England, who were taking on France at Twickenham in the evening match. England needed to beat the French by 26 points to claim the title for themselves, but they fell just 6 points short of their target after a highly entertaining 55-35 win against Les Blues.

Waiter rips off customer and burglarises restaurant

0
Galway Daily courts Waiter rips off customer and burglarises restaurant

A restaurant waiter not only stole a bank card from a customer, but returned to burglarise the restaurant where he had been employed on multiple occasions.

Zakir Hossain (31), of Dun Oda, Munster Avenue in Galway City, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of burglary at the restaurant where he had once been employed, as well as to stealing from a customer.

On February 28 of 2019 a customer entered the restaurant and used her Ulster Bank debit card to pay for her meal.

A male server, Hossain, was captured on CCTV taking her card after she paid. He then went to Ceasar’s Palace Casino in Salthill later that day and took out €1,800 over the course of four separate transactions.

The burglary offences originated from July 7 of 2019. The restaurant owner locked up Kashmir at 11:30pm and went home.

While he was at home he checked the restaurant’s CCTV cameras via his phone, and Hossain in the restaurant. This after he had been fired. He called Gardaí, who found Hossain in the restaurant’s disabled bathroom.

A review of CCTV footage from the restaurant showed that he had also burglarised the restaurant on June 28, as well as July 2 and 3, taking cash from the tills each time.

The total amount stolen from the restaurant came to €1,860 over the course of the burglaries.

In a written victim impact statement which was handed into the judge, the woman who had her card stolen said that she now feels “vulnerable and suspicious” during all transactions.

The owner of Kashmir told the District Court that this has had a serious impact on his business, with extremely negative reviews posted online.

People have thought that the restaurant was in on the theft he added.

Beyond the professional realm, this has also affected his personal life. Hossain made copies of all of his key he said, not just for the restaurant, but for his home as well.

Solicitor Brian Gilmartin, defending, acknowledged that what Hossain did was a “complete and utter breach of trust” towards his employer.

Judge Fahy said that the actual physical loss of monies experienced by the owner of the restaurant was a “drop in the ocean” compared to the goodwill destroyed after years of work.

The defence had €2,000 in compensation to offer the restaurant owner for his losses, the €1,500 which was lodged for bail, and €500 more in court. But Judge Fahy said that Hossain would still be receiving a prison sentence.

“This man has to start all over again. The goodwill this man built up. That is now gone.”

Judge Fahy imposed six months in prison for the burglary charge with the highest financial loss, where Hossain took approximately €600 in a single night.

She further handed down a six month consecutive sentence for the theft of the bank card, for a total of one year in prison.

Each of the other burglary charges, and attempting to withdraw money using the stolen card, attracted a six month concurrent sentence.

Free Legal was granted to Mr Gilmartin, and leave to appeal was granted to Mr Hossain with a recognisance of his own bond of €800, and an independent surety of €800, half of which was to be lodged with the court in each case.

Gamban vs. NetNanny: Comparison

0

Over the years, online gambling has only seen a rise among the young and the old on the Internet. The gambling activities on the Internet can be quite thrilling and entertaining as it combines gaming with gambling.

The eagerness to level up in the game and earn money incites excitement, especially among the young people on the Internet.

This is where the need for secure, safe, and responsible gambling comes into the picture.

Responsible Gaming is a set of policies set by the rulemaking bodies in the gambling industry. Online gambling platforms undertake these policies as a part of their social responsibility initiatives prescribed under the regulatory body they are affiliated to.

Responsible Gambling is used to create awareness against severe threats in the gambling industry. Some of these are:

  • Gambling addiction
  • Fraudulent behavior and online scams
  • Underage gambling
  • Fair gaming policies
  • Information privacy
  • Ethical marketing of online casinos
  • Secure and safe gambling environments

Gamstop is one scheme that works successfully to promote Responsible Gambling and ensure players can self-exclude themselves from the online betting sites. However, there are more such measures, such as Gamban and Net Nanny, which work similarly to Gamstop. We will discuss the two and the differences between them in this article.

What is Gamban?

Gamban is an application for computers and portable devices that blocks out all gambling websites to offer a strict restriction from all such wagering opportunities. Players who wish to keep themselves away from gambling websites can install this application on their devices. This downloadable application works on desktops, laptops, and mobile phones to adapt well to each environment and provide protection from online wagering.

Once you opt for the restrictions on Gamban, it will block your device out from all gambling sites online. This includes online casino websites, sports betting sites, eSports websites, as well as for cryptocurrencies. However, there are several reputable betting sites not blocked by Gamban affiliated, operating under offshore licenses such as Malta Gaming Authority, Gambling Commission of Curacao Commission, Government of Gibraltar which offer a range of games from leading providers such as Microgaming, NetEnt, Playtech and others. These sites are credible, transparent and offer great promotional offers.

Gamban offers a free seven-day trial, which lets players decide whether this the right option for them when it comes to self-exclusion schemes. Gamban is safe to use as it respects one’s information privacy, which means the applications will not store any data, and neither will it access any.

What is Net Nanny?

Talking about self-exclusion systems, Net Nanny is a software that allows control of a second person’s Internet activity. The software is primarily targeted towards parents so that they can control the content their children consume online. Apart from filtering out explicit content, Net Nanny is also famous for creating customized black-lists for websites, allowing safe searching options, tracking search engine usage, limiting daily Internet consumption, and blocking applications on devices.

Even though the primary objective of this content control software is to establish healthy boundaries for children online, it can also be used by gamblers to self-exclude themselves from gambling websites. Alternatively, one can also restrict another person’s gambling activities online. This proves as an efficient way to cut down on wagering activities in a specialized way of content restriction.

Net Nanny has a Family Feed feature wherein the software sends reports of online searches, transparency regarding usage of applications, and real-time alerts of risk-related content. Net Nanny is not free as it comes at the cost of $40 per year.

Gamban vs. Net Nanny

The differences between Gamban and Net Nanny are not too many, but the only ones are very specific. Gamban is an application that is exclusively used for gambling websites. It blocks out all online casino platforms, but there is always a way to access the websites through a device that does not have the application installed. However, the same applies to Net Nanny too.

There may be a few problems regarding requirements on some devices, but overall, Gamban is an excellent solution as it not only blocks websites but, in certain cases, also blocks out payment methods online.

Net Nanny, on the other hand, provides a great way to supervise someone who suffers from the woes of gambling addiction. It can not only block out gambling websites but also restricts the amount of time one spends online. Net Nanny sends reports to a second person who opts to take responsibility for the software. However, one disadvantage is that setting up Net Nanny can be quite tedious due to the number of steps required at first.

Coming to the subscription plan, Gamban is less expensive compared to Net Nanny.

Concluding Thoughts

Even though options like Gamban, Net Nanny, and Gamstop work effectively to set up restrictions for players online, there are sites that do not adhere to the Responsible Gambling schemes, thereby allowing players despite their bans. Make sure to look for gambling pages with proxy websites that bypass the self-exclusion software.

Why Do Gamblers Prefer to Skip Annoying KYC Procedure?

0

The KYC procedure, also known as Know Your Customer or Know Your Client procedure is usually carried out by businesses and online operators to authenticate the identity of prospective and existing customers.

The procedure is important because it can be used to find out if some prospective customers want to use the business for illegal activities like money laundering. For example, if the customer is planning to deposit money into the online casino not because they want to play games but because they want to launder it. It is also in the interest of customers, in case they lose their account or forfeit their funds.

Online casino operators also hold KYC procedures for prospective players, although this depends on the gaming laws in the jurisdiction they are under. When a player is registering, personal information such as their name, address, age, banking details and copies of their valid identification cards are also needed to prevent fraud through the online casino operator. Although many players see the need for the KYC procedure, others see it as annoying and unnecessary. Some players even give up on signing up at an online casino operator if the KYC is too long.

Reasons Why Some Gamblers Skip KYC Procedure

No Privacy

Many gamblers don’t like the KYC procedure because of the lack of privacy. Since the online casinos ask different private questions, especially those that can compromise their anonymity, they are wary of giving this information. Some gamblers prefer to join no verification operators provided by CasinoGap in order to protect their personal data. With the risk of hacking and stealing information, not all players can risk giving away their information to an online casino operator.

This is especially in the case of those players who want to play at crypto casinos. Since cryptocurrency is meant to protect one’s identity, it seems counterproductive to some players that they have to go through a KYC procedure.

The Hassle

Another reason why some gamblers see the KYC procedure as a menace is because of the hassle. Because of how stressful the procedure is, some players just give up in the middle. Apart from the normal registration, some casinos don’t allow players to withdraw until the verification process is finished.

This usually involves submitting documents that validate your identity, taking a picture of yourself, doing email confirmations and more. Even after submitting all the documents they asked for, it also takes a long time for them to go through it and verify your account so you can play and withdraw freely.

Fear of Info Theft

Some players steer clear from the KYC procedure because they have heard stories of online casino operators who exploit the information of their players. This is because of some illegal sites that sell people’s personal information once they sign up on their casino website.

There are also cases of hackers stealing information from players from online casinos. If the information on one’s identification card and email is stolen, the hacker can easily steal their identity and wreak some havoc. Thus, these players don’t like the KYC procedure.

Restrictions

Another reason why players lookout for online casinos with no KYC procedure is the country restrictions. There’s no way that your location won’t be made known during the procedure, and so if you’re in a country where online gambling is not allowed in its entirety or offshore online casinos are illegal, the casino would stop the sign-up process.

Because of this, players look for casinos who don’t ask them information about the country they are in. Before starting the sign-up process for any site, always check the gambling laws in your state so that you go through the rigorous process for nothing.

Conclusion

Regardless of the reasons why the KYC procedure is annoying and seemingly unnecessary, playing at an online casino that does not have this procedure is inadvisable. This is because all the casinos that don’t have this procedure are not licensed and regulated by any gambling authorities. So, if your account suddenly gets terminated, your funds get forfeited or your money is stolen by the online casino, no government will be able to help you get it back.

So, whether the process is too long or not, as long as you’re playing at a trusted and licensed casino, you’re good to go. If you decide to play at a no-KYC casino site, you have to exercise caution of the highest order.

US President-elect Joe Biden has joked that the only downside of his nomination for new Labor Secretary is that he is from Galway, and not Mayo.

Biden nominated Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh, whose parents are from Connemara, as Secretary of Labor in his new administration.

Marty Walsh’s parents left Ireland in the 1950s and began their new lives in the United States, and Walsh holds both Irish and American citizenship.

“For Secretary of Labor, I nominate a good friend and a stand-up guy, Marty Walsh of Boston. The son of Irish immigrants,” said President-elect Biden yesterday.

“The only downside – they are not from Mayo, they are from Galway.”

Galway sees more COVID cases in two weeks than in first seven months of the pandemic

0
Galway daily news COVID-19 cases more than double at UHG

There have been more COVID-19 cases reported in Galway in the past fortnight than in almost the first seven months of the pandemic combined.

There have been 1,651 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Galway in the two weeks up to midnight on Thursday, January 7.

Compared with that, it was only on October 19 of last year that the cumulative total of cases in Galway reached 1,676.

The past week has seen Galway hit record daily figures on multiple occasions. Yesterday there were 220 new case in Galway, almost 40 higher than the previous record of 184 cases on Thursday.

The overall 14-day incidence rate in Galway now stands at 639.8 cases per 100,000 people.

The first cases of the new South African variant of COVID-19 have been identified in Ireland Dr Tony Holohan said on Friday.

“All of the cases identified are directly associated with recent travel from South Africa. Anyone who has travelled from South Africa recently is advised to self-isolate for 14 days and identify themselves through a GP for testing as soon as possible.”

“We are particularly advising healthcare workers travelling from South Africa, that it is essential that they self-isolate for 14 days before entering/re-entering the workplace.”

“While this variant has not yet been identified in many European countries we believe the identification here reflects the extent of genome sequencing surveillance in Ireland.”

Gort Biogas Plant saga continues with new appeal

The saga of the proposed Gort Biogas Plant is continuing before the planning authorities, despite multiple earlier decisions against it.

A High Court ruling against Galway County Council has given Sustainable Bio-Energy Limited a second chance to bring their case to the planning authorities.

Galway County Council initially refused planning for the biogas plant on the outskirts of Gort in January on the grounds that it would pose a traffic hazard due to increased HGV traffic on the Regional Road.

Concerns were also raised about the location of the proposed plant on the outskirts of Gort, with the council saying that it would be contrary to the sustainable development of the town.

Finally it was stated that their was not enough information in the Natura Impact Statement and Environmental Impact Assessment Report submitted to be sure that the plant would not give rise to potential risk to human health and environmental damage.

The proposed biogas plant in the townlands of Ballynamantan, Kinincha and Glenbrack would be used to treat farm waste in order to produce fertiliser and energy.

The 10ha development was heavily opposed in the local area, with over 300 submissions made to the county council objecting to the plans the first time around.

An appeal was lodged against the county council’s refusal, but An Bord Pleanála deemed it invalid as it had been submitted outside of the permitted timeframe.

In an order dated October 13 of 2020, the High Court quashed the county council’s original decision to refuse permission after a judicial review was granted questioning the appeal deadline date.

The fresh application was received by Galway County Council on November 21, and promptly rejected by the planning department once again on December 2 for the same reasons given in January.

The council’s decision has once again been appealed to An Bord Pleanála, which is due to rule on the appeal by April 30 of 2021.

Galway TD calls on Government to mobilise Army to deliver Covid vaccines quicker

0
galway daily covid vaccines army

A Galway East TD has called on the Government to mobilise the Army and the National Army Reserve to help deliver COVID vaccines in the quickest time possible.

Seán Canney TD said that the Army are ready, equipped, and that they have the medical expertise and logistical experience to help deliver the vaccine and help administer it.

“The National COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy as published is a document of 56 pages which is full if aspiration,” said Deputy Canney.

“People have hope that the vaccine is the way out of the pandemic, but the Government need to set out a comprehensive programme for testing.

“The Government need to utilise all organs of the state to deliver the vaccine to as many people as possible within the shortest time frame as soon as it becomes available”.

The Independent TD said we are in a ‘National Emergency’ and that a proper programme with targets and dates is needed.

“Closing down the economy is a necessity, but we need to combine that decision with a clear programme complete with delivery time and a weekly report to show progress with the vaccine.

“In this way the Government will demonstrate strong leadership in our time of need.”

The rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine for healthcare staff at Portiuncula University Hospital has begun, with 500 due to receive their first dose by week’s end.

Louise Ann McGrath, Clinical Nurse Manager 2, St John’s Ward was the first staff member in the hospital to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on Wednesday.

Louise received the vaccine from her nursing colleague, Mary Barrett, and over the coming weeks the programme will be expanded the hospital and community services

Louise said that she was delighted to receive the vaccine to protect against COVID-19, and the serious health problems that come with it.

She has worked at Portiuncula for more than 20 years, and is currently a nurse manager at a ward which has been treating COVID-19 patients since the start of the pandemic last year.

“We have seen the devastating effect of this infection on our patients and their families and 2020 was a really difficult year for everyone working in the health services.”

“As we begin a new year, it is really positive to see the start of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign,” Louise said.

The Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine was the first to be approved for use in the European Union, followed by the Moderna vaccine just this week.

Under the government’s vaccination programme, the first people to receive protection against COVID-19 are frontline healthcare workers and people over the age of 65 living in long term facilities.

James Keane Hospital Manager at Portiuncula University Hospital, said that their plan is to first vaccinate staff on on the COVID-19 wards, the Emergency Department and ICU, before moving out across the entire hospital.

“After a really difficult year we are delighted that this vital vaccination programme has begun here in Portiuncula University Hospital”

Marita Fogarty, Director of Nursing at PUH and the person in charge of the hospital’s vaccination campaign, said that 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, including healthcare staff.

Information will be provided to every person

“While the vaccine is not mandatory, it is recommended that everyone gets the vaccine when it is offered to them.”

“Getting a COVID-19 vaccine should protect from the serious complications of COVID-19 and reduce the illness and deaths caused by this virus.”

Is ‘Zero Covid’ our way out? People Before Profit still thinks so

As we enter another period of strict Covid-19 restrictions due to case numbers spiralling out of control, People Before Profit has not changed its position on the approach the country should be taking.

The party believes that instead of rolling lockdowns until enough of the population is vaccinated, Ireland should be looking at a ‘Zero Covid’ approach.

People Before Profit’s Galway spokesperson Adrian Curran said that his party published a Zero Covid Roadmap document in October, that would get the country out of the cycle of lockdowns.

“Zero Covid does not mean eradication,” he explained. “It means the elimination of community transmission.

“A Zero Covid strategy allows us to get the level of the virus so low that it can be tested, tracked, traced, isolated and therefore contained so that there is virtually no community transmission.”

The PBP Galway spokesperson said that the key is to contain the virus so it can be prevented from spreading so that we can lift restrictions and prevent perpetual cycles of lockdown.

“This has been achieved in countries such as Vietnam, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, China and Thailand,” he said.

“The Irish government and the Stormont Executive have caved in to lobbying from business interests and made a mess of our Covid response.”
