Galway Daily news Over 80 employers coming to GMIT careers fair next week

More than 80 employers and organisation, including multinational giants, will be showcasing opportunities for graduates at GMIT’s Careers Fair next week.

The Careers Fair is a chance for final year students and graduates, and other members of the public, to look at emerging trends in the jobs market.

They can speak to representatives of new and existing companies about what skills they’re looking for in graduates.

Many of the companies attending will be looking to hire skilled candidates on the day, so dress sharp and keep a good CV on hand.

This year’s fair has attracted a slew of new companies like Amazon, Aerogen, Agritech, Biomedical Research, ESB, Regeneron, Ryanair, and Sidero.

Bridie Killoran, Head of the Careers Service at GMIT said, “It is so rewarding to talk to final year students about all the exciting opportunities that are available to them now compared to five years ago.”

“Employers seek GMIT graduates because they believe they have the necessary skills, adaptability and knowledge to take their place within their organisations.”

Bridie said most of the students coming out of GMIT land on their feet, “In 2017, 92% of our graduates were either in employment or further study six months after graduating.”

As well as meeting with exhibitors the day will involve CV Clinics, guidance on emerging job markets, and information on postgraduate studies or volunteering opportunities.

The full list of exhibitors who’ll be attending next Monday can be found here.

“It is also great to see many of the same companies return each year including the ABP Food Group, Aldi, Cisco, Ericsson, Fidelity Investments, Kepak, Lidl, Linesight, Siteminder, and many more,” Bridie added.

The GMIT Careers Fair willtake place next Monday, October 1 from 12pm to 3pm.

Cúrsa MA nua in OÉ Gaillimh ag dul ar aghaidh le duine amháin ar an gcúrsa

Galway Daily news International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor

Tá Cúrsa MA nua in Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh ag dul ar aghaidh le duine amháin cláraithe ar an gcúrsa.

Ceithre mhí ó shin d’fhógraíodh go mbeadh cúrsa MA nua á chur ar fáil ag Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge in Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh agus a bheas ag tosnú i Mí Mheán Fhomhair.

Ag an am fógraíodh go mbeadh 15 áit le fáil ar an gcúrsa, ach thosaigh an MA nua, MA Cleachtas Gairmiúl ar an 13ú Mhéan Fhomhair agus duine amháin cláraithe don gcúrsa.

Seo mar a bhí le rá ag Aodh Ó Coileán, duine de na teagascóirí ar an gcúrsa,

“Is duine amháin a thosaigh ar an MA (Cleachtas Gairmiúil sna Meáin), Déardaoin, 13 Meán Fómhair 2018.

“Bhí triúr le tosnú, thit iarrthóir amháin amach cúpla lá roimh an tús mar gheall ar chúsrsaí sláinte. D’éirigh iarrthóir  eile as an oiche roimhré ar chursaí pearsanta. Ba chúis díomá dúinn é sin ach cinneadh dul ar aghaidh leis an gcúrsa i mbliana.”

Labhair Aodh freisin maidir leis an easpa fógraíocht a bhí ann maidir leis an MA nua.

“Ní raibh an MA nua fógraithe i bhfad agus ní déanadh mórán margaíochta air go dtí seo. Cuirtear béim anseo ar thimthriall margaíochta na hOllscoile agus bhíomar beagán deireanach ag dul i mbun margaíochta ar an MA nua don bhliain acadúil 2018/19.

“Is iondúil a thosnaítear i mí Mheán Fómhair na bliana roimhe – Meán Fómhair 2017 sa chás seo.”

Ar an Aoine bhí Meamram Comhthuisceana sínithe idir OÉ Gaillimh agus RTÉ chun clár nua MA (Cleachtas Gairmiúil sna Meáin) a chur ar fáil, le béim ar an bhfoghlaim phraiticbhunaithe trí mheán na Gaeilge i stiúideonna éagsúla de chuid RTÉ.

The Residence Hotel, an oasis of comfort and style in the heart of Galway

0
Galway Daily life & style enjoys all the modern comforts in style at the Residence Hotel in the heart of Galway

Tucked away in the heart of Galway’s Latin Quarter, the Residence Hotel offers stylish, comfort focused accommodation with the life of the city just outside the front door.

Once a Carmelite Convent built in the 16th century, the boutique style Residence Hotel recalls its past with handsome wooden interiors out front and high ceilings patterned with a starry night.

While twenty individually designed rooms are equipped to the modern standards a tourist would expect.

Free high-speed wifi, 42-inch Samsung Smart TVs with easy access to your Netflix, and USB wall sockets for charging devices are some of the amenities available.

Bedrooms at The Residence Hotel

The small number of rooms relative to other hotels lets staff at the Residence Hotel make sure each guest is well looked after.

The modern amenities are matched by a stylish decor that calls to mind modern art or a high end club more than it does a holy order.

Bedrooms are decorated with beautiful paintings and photographic art inspired by pop-culture and calling to mind iconic moments in film and music.

Guests can also make use of the room’s Nespresso machine, or go for a grander touch of class with the in-room champagne service, from an exclusive partnership with Luc-Belaire Champagne.

Enjoy an in-room champagne service with ultra modern amenities

Sitting right on Quay Street, you only have to open your window to soak in the sounds of the city, like Galway’s famed community of buskers bringing music to the streets.

Less than a minute’s walk in any direction you can find yourself at any number of Galway’s cultural and artistic hotspots.

The Palas arthouse cinema, the Spanish Arch, the Mick Lally theatre, Galway city museum, or the pubs and clubs that bring evenings in Galway to life.

But don’t worry that the city’s night-life will keep you up, a double layer of windows does the trick of blocking out the noise for sleepers who like things quiet.

1520 Bar

Guests at the Residence Hotel don’t have to look far for an inviting place to sit and enjoy a meal and a drink.

Attached to the hotel is the 1520 bar; step from an ultra modern setting into this pub which has a somewhat more old-fashioned look, but holds on to that energetic vibe.

Your eye will certainly never get bored as every surface is covered with an array of posters and oddities that could be the life’s collection of a world explorer.

1520 Bar and Restaurant

Enjoy a cold pint and some gourmet pub food with your friends at the spacious tables out front, served from noon to 8pm every day.

There’s classics like Prime Sirloin Steak, and the 1520 burger; good Irish home food like lamb stew, or bangers and mash.

And what’s the point of eating on the Atlantic coast unless you’re going to try out the freshly caught mussels, clam & prawn linguini, or the creamy Galway Bay seafood chowder.

In the evenings the Latin Quarter’s spark finds its way inside these doors with a live DJ, and lots of room for dancing when Galway’s talented local musicians take to the bandstand.

Music at 1520

If you prefer a few quiet drinks with your mates away from the bustle out front, the ‘Penny Bar’ at the back has snug little spots with comfy chairs that are great to relax and just enjoy the evening.

The Residence Hotel is a great option for tourists and locals who want to enjoy a bit of luxury, with all of Galway offerings of music, culture, and night life right at their feet.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2017:

Congratulations to our seniors who have qualified for the senior football championship quarter-final having defeated St James’ by 0-15 to 1-8, played in Pearse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.  This game also doubled as the 2017 division 1 league final.

This win brings us to four-in-a-row league titles. Well done to captain, Micheál Lundy and the team.

We have been drawn to play Caherlistrane in the championship quarter-final on either Saturday or Sunday of this weekend.  As ever we thank you for your support in Pearse Stadium and ask for your on-going support in the next game.

JUNIORS LOSE OUT:

Hard luck to our Junior A team who were defeated by Pádraig Pearses  in the North Board final played in Barnaderg on Saturday. This was an excellent game of football with the teams tied at 1-5 each at half time and level again at full time 2-13 each.

However, Pearses went on to win by 3-19 to 2-16 in extra time. The scoreline does not reflect the closeness of the game even in extra time as with time almost up we were down by 2 points and had a chance of a goal.  This was denied and Pearses went upfield to score 1-1 without reply.

Conor Creaven and team captain, Alan O’Donovan, scored the Corofin goals. Well done to all the players involved with this panel and their dedicated mentors.  The team played excellent football throughout the campaign and gave us great entertainment in all their games.

SYMPATHY:
The Club offers its sympathy to the families and friends of Padraic Connolly, Dublin, uncle of Patrick Connolly and Mary Langan, Clough; Hannah Tarsnane, New Jersey, USA, sister of Eddie Collins, Caherhugh; and Bridget Duffy (née Ward, Anbally), Barnaboy, Turloughmore; mother of Tom Duffy, Tavanagh.

Ireland Women Squad

The Ireland Women’s Squad for the November Test matches against the USA and England has been announced and head coach Adam Griggs has included six Connacht internationals including two uncapped players.

They are Beibhinn Parsons and Aoibheann Reilly, co-captains and key players in the Connacht Under-18s’ historic Interpro trophy win this month. The four other players are from Galwegians – Laura Feely, Nicole Fowley, Nichola Fryday and Edel McMahon.

Ireland host the USA in Donnybrook on November 18th before travelling to Twickenham to meet England six days later.

“The coaching group are really excited to name this side for the November series,” said Griggs to assembled media at the squad announcement.  “We are up against two good teams and it’s a good chance to blood new talent and get in preparation ahead of the Six Nations.

“This year we have included three development players in the panel. They are going to be fully immersed in the squad with an eye on fast tracking their development and making sure in a year or two they will be ready to go at international level.

“In saying that, when they come in to compete with the other players in the squad, if they are doing their job well, they have every chance of being selected.”

Galway gardaí may start recording hate crimes

0
Galway news - Galway police may be asked to record hate crimes

Recording hate crimes – Police in Galway City may be asked to note whether an assault had a discriminatory basis, according to the city’s Joint Policing Committee.

A motion to include reporting the number of hate crimes in the quarterly garda report passed Galway City’s Joint Policing Committee on Monday morning.

Galway Superintendent Marie Skehill noted that hate crimes are not currently recorded by gardaí – so national guidelines for recording crimes would have to change to take any new requirements into account.

Committee member Joe Loughnane from the Galway Anti-Racism Network proposed the motion.

He commented that Ireland currently has no hate crime legislation and cited a recent report showing that Ireland has the highest rates of hate crimes in Europe.

“It would be good to know,” he noted, adding that hate crimes are currently recorded as regular assaults by gardaí but that many are reported to GARN as having a racial or anti-LGBT basis.

According to the garda report discussed at the JPC meeting, this year minor assaults were up 31% at the same time that crime in general fell by 17%.

Superintendent Skehill stated that assaults are not categorised when recorded, so information on hate crimes is currently not available – but that to her knowledge it is “not an issue”.

Councillor Billy Cameron seconded the motion.

He commented: “A lot of hate crime may go unreported from the LGBT community and the African community.

“We’re one of the most multicultural and diverse cities in Ireland. If we could lead the way on this…as a city that values the diversity in the city, let’s not be wanting in looking after those citizens as well.”

The motion that was passed will also be sent to Joint Policing Committees in every city and county in the State so that changes can be made on a national level.

Sunshine is on its way as high pressure looks set to dominate!

Galway Daily weather Sunny spells bookened by showers this weekend

After a breezy day today with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, we will see some settled weather coming our way over the next few days and into the weekend.

High pressure is here to stay for the rest of this week, bringing brighter weather and prolonged sunny spells at times.

Tomorrow will be a tale of two halves though, with a windy, cloudy and perhaps rainy start to the day making way for drier and brighter weather in the afternoon, with sunny spells developing.

Top temperatures tomorrow will be 16 to 19 degrees.

Thursday is expected to be a bright day with just a chance of showers in late afternoon. Overall though, it’ll remain bright with sunny spells. Highest temperatures will be around 16 degrees.

And as for Friday and the weekend, it looks like we can expect more of the same – brighter days, with plenty of  sunshine!

However, the weekend will be cooler, and it will be cold at night, with some grass frost under any clear spells.

Medical arts festival to take place in Galway for first time in 2019

medical arts festival

A festival which explores medicine, the arts and culture, will be held in Galway for the first time next year.

The meeting, described as ‘The Electric Picnic’ of medical conferences, will take place in NUI Galway in September 2019.

The hugely successful dotMD conference is run by three Galway-based doctors, Dr Ronan Kavanagh, Dr Muiris Houston and Dr Alan Coss.

It is expected to bring up to 500 doctors and other health care professionals to the city.

dotMD has taken place in Dublin’s Smock Alley to sold out audiences annually since 2012.

Dr Ronan Kavanagh, the conference director based in the Galway Clinic, said: “The organisers believe that Galway is a natural home for dotMD. “Its great to bring the conference home to Galway.

“Our city is home to Druid Theatre, Macnas, the Galway International Arts Festival and is also the European Capital of Culture in 2020, so is the perfect location for a meeting exploring the relationship between the arts, culture, and medicine.”

One of the reasons for the move is to attract an international audience to the meeting according to doctor, medical journalist and organiser Muiris Houston “People love to come to Galway with its reputation for great food, craic and music. Its also a gateway for delegates who want to extend their stay and explore Connemara and the Wild Atlantic Way.”

Topics previously explored include literature, art, photography, poetry, rap, comedy, story telling, technology, burnout, Buddhism and meditation and even undertaking.

Galway City’s new busking bylaws ‘on hold’ for now

BUSKING BYE LAW GALWAY CITY

Galway’s controversial new busking bylaws will not be enforced until they are finalised, Galway City’s Joint Policing Committee heard on Monday.

Superintendent Marie Skehill of An Garda Síochana told the Committee that the bylaws had not been signed off yet.

“It’s on hold at the moment,” she stated, adding that there are still one or two issues with the wording that have not been resolved.

She did not say when the legislation was expected to be signed off.

The bylaws were narrowly passed by the City Council in May this year after complaints about crowds and noise from businesses in the city centre.

They impose strict limitations on buskers in the Shop Street area, banning all amplification, drums, and circle acts until 6pm.

But many Galwegians disagree with the bylaws, as busking is viewed as a draw for tourists.

The buskers themselves have said they will fight the new legislation in court and have set up a busking code with community guidelines to self-regulate and handle complaints.

City Councillor Pádraig Conneely said at Monday’s JPC meeting that buskers “bring art and culture to our streets” before asking the Superintendent about the status of the bylaws.

Superintendent Skehill noted that once the legislation is finalised, gardaí will need to discuss resource allocation, as enforcement may require signage and personnel.

She added that she had “no idea” where the rumour that the bylaws would take effect from 1 September came from.

Councillor Terry O’Flaherty commented that the bylaws were brought in to provide businesses with a legal course of action against disruptive behaviour and were not meant to be enforced daily.

The opening round of our 2018 Galway United Senior Player of the Year competition closed last night (Monday) as the 16 contenders were whittled down to nine players.

Eoin McCormack topped the poll with 85% followed by Conor Barry (50%), Stephen Walsh (40%), Ryan Connolly (33%) and Tadhg Ryan (33%).

The top two from each of the four groups advanced to the next round along with the best third placed player.  As three players were qualifying from Group Two, there was no need for adjudicators to make a decision between Alan Murphy and Gary Shanahan.

However, adjudicators were requested to make a decision on who finished runner-up in Group Four.  They opted to keep Alex Byrne in the competition ahead of Christopher Horgan.

Some of those unfortunate to be eliminated included Robbie Williams, Carlton Ubaezuonu, Danny Furlong, Christopher Horgan and Conor Melody.

The semi-finalists will take part today (Tuesday) with three groups containing three players each.  The winners from each group will qualify for Wednesday’s final along with the best runner-up.

Galway oncologist leading trial to see if aspirin can stop cancer returning after treatment

Galway Daily news NUIG recruiting GPs for study on managing multiple long term conditions

A five year medical trial in Ireland to see if aspirin can stop early-stage cancer from returning after treatment is being led by a consultant oncologist at University Hospital Galway.

The Add-Aspirin trial is for people who have had, or have started, treatment for early-stage cancer of the breast, stomach, oesophagus, prostate or bowel.

Dr Greg Leonard, consultant medical oncologist at University Hospital Galway, is the Principal Investigator of the trial, which is being coordinated through Cancer Trials Ireland.

Three hundred patients around Ireland will self-administer a dose of aspirin a day for five years after receiving standard treatments to held researchers see if it can help stop the cancer returning.

The trials will take place at hospitals in Galway, Sligo, Limerick, Cork, and Dublin from this month on.

This part of a larger, international trial involving 11,000 patients across Ireland, the UK, and India.

Dr Leonard said of the trial, “At a time when we are used to new cancer treatments being relatively costly, the possibility of repurposing an inexpensive, generic drug that is available worldwide to stop or slow cancer is potentially ground-breaking.”

“The results of this trial could have a huge impact on the global cancer burden, particularly given the increasing cancer incidence in lower resource countries.”

Participants will be recruited for the trials over the next three to six years, and will then be checked ten years after their treatments.

This is the first large scale test investigating the potential anti-cancer effects of aspirin on early-stage cancer patients.

It comes after research into using aspiring against heart disease suggested that it may be beneficial to cancer patients.

The launch of this trial coincides with Cancer Week here in Ireland which runs from Monday, September 24 – Sunday, September 30.

The research is funded by the Irish Cancer Society and the Health Research Board.

New Clarin College school building project takes a major step forward

0
Galway Daily news Construction begins on new Clarin College in Athenry

Construction of a new 1,000 pupil school building for Clarin College in Athenry has taken a big step forward this week as a contractor for the project has been chosen.

Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon confirmed that the Department of Education has issued a letter of intent to the chosen contractor.

Construction on the new secondary school is expected to begin shortly, either by the end of this month or in October.

When it’s completed, the 1,000 pupil school will have modern sports and meeting facilities, two special needs classrooms, and 90 car parking spaces.

Tenders for the project were first put out in May, with the deadline for applications extended from July to early August.

The department has not announced who the contractor is yet, citing sensitive commercial reasons.

Clarin College, formerly Gairmscoil Mhuire, is getting a double dose of big news as it’s celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The Vocational School Athenry, now called Clarin College, first opened its doors to pupils on September 4, 1968.

To celebrate the milestone a banquet is being held at the Raheen Woods Hotel next month for anyone who has history with the school.

In addition, a commemorative booklet of some of the school’s biggest moments over the past five decades is being gathered.

The party will take place on Saturday, October 13 from 6:30pm, tickets are available from Clarin College or the Raheen Woods hotel.

GALWAY GAA – Opinion: Killimor Must Keep Their Focus

0
Killimor Hurling

There’s something different about broadcasting on the sideline for a championship match when there’s so much at stake.  It happens regularly enough but it’s always a welcome reminder why we get involved in this broadcasting crack.

I was delighted to be reporting in New Inn for their first intermediate championship game.  Doubt they’ll be making a note of that in Sarsfields’ record books but it’s here now to be recorded.  And it was a very important contest.

Killimor secured their place in the quarter-finals after beating Castlegar 2-16 to 0-14 thanks to goals from Joey Starr and Conor Donnelly.  The result sorted out Group One as Kinvara, Kilconieron and Kiltormer all advanced leaving Castlegar to wrestle Annaghdown and Kilbeacanty in the relegation battle.

There can be no doubting that Killimor were deserving winners and could have made life much easier for themselves if they’d avoided 12 wides.  But Castlegar also deserve credit for rallying back from an 11-point deficit to get within four.

Jimmy Duffy’s side were frustrated by a couple of refereeing decisions in the first half when the contest was still close.   While hardly decisive, they had a case regarding a couple and the outcry from one led to a member of their management team seeing the line.

Needless to say, when things like this happen, the game carries an edge and both teams can commit reckless (not dirty) challenges as Killimor pulled away before Castlegar came back.

The reason the headline states ‘Killimor’ need to keep their focus is solely because they won, they are still in the championship and they have a quarter-final approaching in the next two or three weeks.

There’s no doubt the east Galway team are the form side after coming from the bottom of the pack to take their knock out place with a game to spare.  Kinvara and Oranmore/Maree might carry the current favourites tags but this is a very open race for county honours.

If Killimor are to end their 34-year wait for an intermediate championship, they’ll need to keep their focus.  As this game got messy, they engaged in silly fouls and challenges which a team in a winning position shouldn’t get caught up in.

To be clear, this is not suggesting Castlegar were any more guilty.  But it’s more understandable for the team behind in these situations.  However, if a team has ambitions of raising silverware, they have to back off and make sure the job gets done.

Killimor got there in the end after a sweet counter attack led to Donnelly’s second goal.  And they also had powerful displays from centre back Eoin Fahy and top scorer Starr.  They couldn’t have asked to be in a better place ahead of a final round-robin work out against Kinvara.

Castlegar may struggle against Kilconieron but their overall aim of cementing intermediate status will be achieved if Kilbeacanty fall to Annaghdown.  Of course, the same result will apply should they get their second win.  But they have proven they can compete.

After being written off, Killimor are in the championship picture and mustn’t leave this game behind without taking some important lessons.  An 11-point lead should be a win but it took a second goal to secure it.  They lost their focus briefly.  They can’t afford to do that again!
