Galway business goes from 24 orders to 50,000 using social media

Eating right has never been as easy, right?

Well, yes, but it can also be confusing – people are inundated with information about what they should be eating and why.

With so much advice, it can often be overwhelming and a case of just too much information.

That’s where Clean Cut Meals stepped in, a fresh food delivery service providing healthy portion-controlled meals delivered to your door.

The business was started by two Galway lads, Micheal Dyer and Conor McCallion, who created the brand out of a drive and a desire to run their own business and with a background in food and commerce.

The idea behind Clean Cut Meals was convenience – no one has time to be prepping food, weighing out the correct portion sizes and wondering if they are really eating a balanced diet.

The founders themselves knew the time that goes into this with a keen interest in their own wellness, health and overall nutrition.

“You could lose hours each week, shopping, prepping, cooking and as well making the decision about what you actually want to eat. We had travelled to America and had seen first hand how these healthy, fresh produce delivery businesses were really a strong business model and lifestyle choice for people,” explained Micheal.

“So, we knew that if we put our energy and focus into it as a business we too could help to change the way people eat. We want to make life easier for our customers and for ourselves.”

Just over four years ago Clean Cut Meals started in a home kitchen cooking for friends and family, now in 2018 it has expanded to have fed over 50,000 customers and distributed over 500,000 meals across the 32 counties.

It has been in a constant state of expansion, going from a home kitchen to a commercial kitchen to the Clean Cut Meals home in a state of the art facility in Clarinbridge.

A key area which Clean Cut Meals focused on to grow their business, primarily because of their age and secondly, they had no finances for huge marketing campaigns, was through their own social channels.

Facebook and Instagram have been two of the main contributing factors for the brands success.

Starting a Business Facebook Page was Clean Cut Meals first introduction to the world of advertising.

“We had no website, we had no money we had spent all our funds on produce to make the food. Facebook and Instagram were huge for us starting out and still are.

“The first week we had over 3,000 Likes on our page and from that we had 24 orders, in terms of conversion rates we know this is not great but this was the world to us.

“We have now gone fully ecommerce through our own website and from the 24 first orders to now 50,000 well those stats we like,” said Conor.

What started with Conor and Micheal has now grown to a team of 10 staff who are all vested in what they are doing.

Clean Cut Meals Chefs lifestyles are key to a very good work life balance, working 5 days a week, no evenings and always knowing the orders they have to do, there is a constant flow to the life in their kitchen.

“It has gone beyond just a business for us and we strive to help people better their lives, address weight issues and help people reach their goals. We are only getting started!! Producing healthy and affordable meals is our main priority and simplifying a healthy and happier lifestyle is our goal, explained Conor and Micheal.

Want to know how you can help with the housing crisis?

Galway News - What's on - Galway Housing support group fundraiser

How can we help with the housing crisis?

The news is all doom-and-gloom about the housing crisis – and with good reason.

Figures show that homelessness in the West of Ireland is growing faster than anywhere else in the state.

Official Government statistics put the number of homeless in Galway in June at 263 – although COPE Galway believes the figure could be far higher.

But what can we actually do about all of this?

Aside from calling your TD and your local City or County Councillor to tell them your opinion – often, and loudly – you might be happy to hear that there’s something else you can do (and it sounds much more fun).

The Galway Housing Support Group is holding a fundraising night of music this Saturday, November 17th at the Loft in Seven on Bridge Street from 10pm until late.

GHSG is a new grassroots organisation aiming to inspire and facilitate collective action on housing issues.

Active since the summer, they offer a space where those having problems with landlords, rent increases or other housing difficulties can vent and share a cuppa.

The group also provides more concrete support, linking people to anti-eviction and community action if they are under serious threat.

They’re hoping to raise funds for a campaign for social housing.

DJs on the night will include:

Jonezy (Rise Up)
Welfare (Rua Sound, Foxy Jangle, Dub Culture)
Really Bad Mothers
Isaac Newtune
Mia
and DJ the Rent is Too Damn High

They’ll be spinning all sorts of music, with genres ranging from techno, house, electro, bass, jungle, and everything in between.

Admission costs €10 at the door (or €5 for unwaged/free for those in Direct Provision), with proceeds going directly to the organisation.

GHSG hold bi-monthly support group meetings in An Meitheal Rothar at 6pm on Thursdays.

So if you or anyone you know needs some housing support, get in touch with them on Facebook or show up to a meeting!

And if going out-out isn’t really your thing, you can always donate to GHSG anyway – or donate to other great charities like COPE Galway or Galway Simon Community.

It’s time to get out and do something.

Galway’s anti-feminist, anti-PC activist gives us his views on the Health Crisis

0
renua galway daily

Local political representative for Renua Neil O’ Mahony shared his thoughts on the current crisis in University Hospital Galway this week, saying that poor management is the cause of most of the problems within our Health Service.

The Pro-Life, ‘pro-free speech’, and anti-PC representative has a loyal conservative following on Twitter.

Speaking to Galway Daily, Neil declared there was many problems within the Health Service, saying that most of these issues can be traced back to an enormous amount of waste through ‘inefficient management’.

He was was reluctant to point the blame of inadequate funding as the primary cause of the crisis.

O’Mahony made reference to the fact Ireland spends ‘one-third more than the average across 35-member countries of the OECD’.

To add to this the activist went on to point out that Ireland spent €4,706 per head on population on healthcare. This is higher then than the OECD average of €3,515

Based on these statistics he decried that the problem rests on how the funding is spent and not the actual amount of funding.

In relation to the lack of nursing staff, he outlined his opinion that under-staffing can be traced back to the inefficient use of HSE funding and not the funding itself.

“Renua will fundamentally reform the HSE to be centered around front-line services,” he said.

In addition, O’Mahony outlined Renua’s intention to ensure the HSE is less top heavy in terms of management. This would, in his view, serve to increase the hiring of nurses, which would in turn alleviate the pressure caused by under-staffing.

Renua has called for the increased investment in homecare services. They believe this would allow more elderly people to be in a position to leave hospital and be cared for in the home while  reducing the scale of overcrowding.

Neil O’Mahony expressed Renua’s opposition to a possible future nurses strike. He based this view on the fact there was ‘hundreds of thousands’ on waiting lists and a strike could have a detrimental impact on patients.

At the same time he made himself clear that Renua isn’t against nursing staff negotiating a pay increase with the HSE but that a simple pay increase won’t fix the issue at its core.

However, he expressed his sympathy for nursing staff who have ‘legitimate grievances’. He urged Simon Harris to address the cause of these grievances and not just their ‘symptoms’.

The Renua member rounded off his argument by slamming the HSE for Hemorrhaging money and staff while being unable to hire new staff due to poor working conditions, overcrowding and inadequate pay.

A ‘fundamental reform’ is needed to address the main structural inefficiencies and not a simple increase in funding, he added.

Massive expansion to Galway retail park will create 300 jobs

0
Galway Daily news Boots becomes latest investor in Gateway Retail Park with flagship store

A major expansion to the Gateway Retail Park in Kncoknacarra will create more than 300 jobs in Galway in one of the biggest retail projects Galway has seen in decades.

The expansion will be anchored by a colossal 60,000sq ft Harvey Norman superstore that will form nearly half of the new retail space in the second phase of the retail park.

On top of Harvey Norman, the phase two expansion will add six new open-use retail units and four food and drink outlets.

Letting agent Bannon said that Harvey Norman’s decision to make such a major investment shows the appeal of the retail park, and Galway, to businesses.

The Irish Times reports that the Australian retailer known for its many sales on electrical goods, computers, and furniture will pay annual rent in the region of €900,000.

Blaine Callard, Chief Executive of Harvey Norman in Ireland, said the company was glad to have finally found a “home in the west” and that the new Galway superstore will make a great addition to their network.

It’s also expected that Bannon will soon announce the identity of a second major international client renting another large store.

Darren Peavoy of Bannon said there is a lot of interest from retailers in letting the new units coming online.

This was unsurprising, he added, as they are well designed to use for fashion or other options.

When the expansion is complete, the new retail outlets at the shopping hub will support 300 full and part-time jobs between them

Gateway Retail Park was purchased by Sigma Retail Partner in 2016 on behalf of Oaktree Capital.

When this planned phase of expansion is complete, it’ll bring the total amount of retail space at the Knocknacarra shopping hub 325,000sq ft.

Other outlets that are already present include Dunnes Stores, B&Q, New Look and Next.

Marcus Wren from Sigma said they’ve put a lot of effort into planning the expansion of Gateway retail park, and thanked Galway city council for helping to push this project through.

Two men charged over street fight outside Garda headquarters

0
Galway Daily news Just 12 Gardaí allocated to Northwestern region from class of 165

Two men have appeared in court this week to face charges in connection with a fistfight in the middle of the street outside Galway Garda headquarters in Renmore.

John Maughan (26), of 62 Renville Park, Oranmore and Patrick Maughan (35), with an address at 122 Laurel Park both appeared before Galway District Court this week on public order charges.

The two men were charged with breaking the peace by threatening, abusive, or insulting words and behaviour over their street fight that brought traffic to a halt in Renmore.

Footage of their fight quickly went viral, with videos taken by phone showing them get out of their cars  and start brawling as children egg them on from off screen.

According to RTÉ, the gardaí are awaiting instruction from the Director of Public Prosecutions on how to proceed with the case.

Garda Shane Travers also indicated that further charges could be forthcoming in connection with the street fight.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded John and Patrick Maughan on continuing bail to appear before the court again in December.

Under their bail conditions they must be of good behaviour, obey a curfew from 10pm to 7am, and to stay away from anyone involved in the case.

Free legal aid was granted to both of the accused.

Fifty Galwegians braved the rain last night to fight injustice

Galway News - Fifty people braved the rain to fight injustice

Injustice in sexual assault cases

At least fifty people turned out to rally at Galway Courthouse Tuesday night despite wind, rain, and single-digit temperatures.

They braved the inclement weather to protest a Cork rape case in which a barrister used the alleged victim’s lacy underwear as proof of consent.

The defendant was acquitted of the crime – but many were outraged at the use of the clothing as evidence.

According to the Irish Examiner, defence barrister Elizabeth O’Connell asked that the jury think about what the complainant was wearing.

“You have to look at the way she was dressed,” O’Connell was quoted as saying.

“She was wearing a thong with a lace front.”

Yet myths linking clothing to sexual assault have been debunked, perhaps most effectively by recent art exhibits in Brussels and the Midwestern US called ‘What were you wearing?’.

Over the weekend, Twitter blew up with women posting photos of their underwear with the hashtag #ThisIsNotConsent.

The campaign – started by I Believe Her Ireland – slams the “wholly unacceptable comment” by O’Connell.

It also seeks to demolish what many women see as a culture of victim-blaming in sexual assault cases in Ireland.

Hundreds protested the comments in Dublin, Limerick, and Galway.

Meanwhile in Cork, crowds of activists left underwear on the steps of the courthouse.

The Galway rally was organised by People Before Profit Galway to oppose sexism and victim blaming in the Irish legal system as well as show solidarity with sexual assault survivors.

Protesters spoke eloquently on issues ranging from the handling of rape cases to the #metoo and #ibelieveher movements.

Rally organiser Emma Lennon of People Before Profit Galway said that she was prompted to act after reading about the Cork trial.

“I thought it was equally as shocking as what happened in Belfast, and a similar movement should take place to resist sexism and rape myths used in court to place doubt in the jury’s mind,” she commented.

“Going forward we will look closely at other rape cases and see how the claimant is treated and push for reform in how these cases are dealt with.”

The rally also raised more than €100 for the Rape Crisis Centre.

Domestic Abuse refuge to open at Galway Magdalene Laundry convent

0
Galway Daily news COPE Galway's Modh Eile wins national community housing award

COPE Galway are paying tribute to suffering of the women who were confined to Galway’s Magdalene laundry by converting the convent associated with it to a modern domestic abuse service.

The local charity is renovating the Mercy convent associated with the Forster Street Magdalene Laundry into a refuge for women and children who have been the victims of domestic abuse.

The state of the art facility named ModhEile, the Irish for “Another Way”, is needed as COPE Galway acknowledges that the current Waterside House building used for the Domestic Abuse services hasn’t been fit for purpose for many years.

In particular, it doesn’t have enough space for all who come looking for safe refuge there. Last year COPE couldn’t accommodate 258 women and their 441 children who sought refuge with them.

The search for a new building began a decade ago, and then five years in the Mercy Order offered COPE the gift of the old convent building in the heart of Galway city.

When work on it is done it will more than double COPE’s capacity to provide shelter from people escaping abusive domestic situations.

Jacquie Horan, COPE Galway CEO said they are mindful of the history of the site, “We have been very proactive from the start of our journey in terms of archaeological considerations also. We commissioned an archaeological and architectural risk assessment which was conducted in 2013 by Finn Delaney.”

“We then contracted the services of John Tierney from Eachtra and the Historical Graves project to engage with the local community and produce a historical and memorial record of the Magdalen Laundry here in Galway and of the women who lived and worked here.”

To help respect and commemorate the women who lived and worked in the magdalene laundry COPE have created a booklet that gathers their stories from this painful chapter of history.

The booklet, produced by John Tierney of Eachtra features contributions from the people of Galway and the accounts of four women who lived there.

It also contains the records of 80 women who are either buried at the site of the Magdalene Laundry or in Bohermore cemetery.

After more than a century and a half in operation, the Galway Magdalene Laundry closed its doors in 1984 and the buildings were demolished in ’91.

Maisie Kenny’s Escape, not her real name, is one of the stories the booklet features. When she was 14 years old she was confined to the laundry for four years from 1948 to 1952.

“They are giving the Convent to COPE Galway. I see that as a little token of atonement,” she said.

“There will always be women or girls in need of shelter, but there must never again be a shelter where you go in and the door is locked behind you and the key thrown away.”

Tuam based Carey Building Contractors have been appointed to carry out the renovations to the convent which are expected to take roughly a year.

The refuge will open its doors to people in need of shelter or other domestic abuse services by the end of 2019.

here are many in our communities who today are experiencing the trauma of domestic abuse in all its forms,” said Jacquie Horan.

“And when they look to COPE Galway to protect them and their children, they deserve a facility that will meet their needs and help them to begin life anew.”

Average rent in Galway City is now at €1,126, a huge jump of almost €360 since the same period in 2015 and is €856 in the county, an increase of €245.

Karen Golden, CEO of Galway Simon Community, said the over-reliance on the private rental sector, alongside the increasing rents cannot be sustained and will continue to force people into homelessness.

“For the last three years, there have been consistent increases in the average rent in both Galway City and County, to the point where renters are now paying 40% more than they were in 2015. The difference is huge.  These rent increases are simply not sustainable for individuals and families in our community and they are pushing people over the edge and into homelessness,” she said.

The Housing Agency has reported that there is a shortage of 2,316 homes in Galway City and Suburbs.

However, just 92 new dwellings have come on stream in the Galway City Council Local Authority area between January and September of this year.

“Demand continues to far outstrip supply, which is resulting in both purchase and rent prices continuing to increase.

“Tenants are at a huge disadvantage – the Rent Pressure Zones (RPZ) that were put in place are clearly not working and the annual increases recorded by Daft continue to illustrate this.

“Rents in Galway City are increasing annually at 16% and in the county at 14%, well above the RPZ cap of 4%.

“Unfortunately, a lot of the people we support are living in fear of a phone call from their landlord to say they are selling or increasing the rent. It’s no way for anybody to live,” added Karen Golden.

The Galway Simon Community CEO added that there is an urgent need for more social housing to be brought on stream in order to stop the flow of people coming into emergency accommodation.

Deontas ceadaithe chun Pháirc an gCeathrú Rua a gcoimeád gearrtha - Galway Daily

Tá deontas ceadaithe ag an Aire Stáit Kyne chun ranganna siamsaíochta a chur ar bun i nGaeltacht Chonamara agus Árann.

Inné d’fhógair Seán Kyne T.D., Príomh-Aoire an Rialtais agus Aire Stait don Ghaeilge,  don Ghaeltacht agus do na hOileáin, go bhfuil deontas suas le €35,406 ceadaithe aige do Ghréasán Múinteoirí na Gaillimhe chubn ranganna ceoil, damhsa agus amhránaíochta a chur ar fáil ar feadh tréimhse sealadach ar fud Ghaeltacht na Gaillimhe.

Is le Gréasán Múinteoirí na Gaillimhe atá an deontas á cheadú, ar mhaithe lena chinntiú go bhfuil ranganna sna healaíona traidisiúnta á gcur ar fáil i gConamara agus Árainn ó Mheán Fómhair 2018 go Nollaig 2018 – uair a ghlacfaidh Ealaín na Gaeltachta freagracht as an gclár a riar.

Cé go bhfuiltear ag leanúint sa ghearrthréimhse leis an soláthar ranganna atá ar fáil cheana féin i gceantair Ghaeltachta Dhún na nGall agus Chorcaí do scoilbhliain 2018/19, ní bheidh ar chumas Ealaín na Gaeltachta tús a chur le ranganna i nGaeltacht na Gaillimhe go dtí Eanáir 2019 de bharr na socruithe maidir le hearcú teagascóirí agus cúrsaí riaracháin eile atá le cur i gcrích lena chinntiú go gcuirfear seirbhís chuí, ar ardchaighdeán, ar fáil do dhaltaí agus do thuismitheoirí araon.  Tá próiseas earcaíochta ar bun ag Ealaín na Gaeltachta faoi láthair chun Comhordaitheoir sna hEalaíona Dúchasacha do Dhaoine Óga a fhostú agus táthar ag súil go mbeidh duine ceaptha roimh dheireadh na míosa seo.

Ceadaíodh deontas suas le €325,000 d’Ealaín na Gaeltachta i mí Iúil seo caite chun clár gníomhaíochtaí sna healaíona traidisiúnta do dhaoine óga a chur chun cinn ar fud na Gaeltachta le linn na scoilbhliana reatha.  Tá sé seo á dhéanamh i gcomhréir le beart 2.10 den Phlean Gníomhaíochta 2018-2022 don Ghaeilge. Faoin gclár nua, déanfar leathnú agus forbairt chéimiúil ar an soláthar ranganna ceoil, damhsa, amhránaíochta agus ealaíona béil ar fud na gceantar Gaeltachta uile.

“Tá tábhacht faoi leith leis na healaíona dúchasacha i gcur chun cinn na teanga i measc daoine óga sa nGaeltacht,” a dúirt an tAire Stáit Kyne.

“Sin an fáth gur chinn mo Roinn leathnú a dhéanamh ar an bhfreastal a dhéantar ar dhaoine óga sa réimse seo agus gur bunaíodh an clár nua de ghníomhaíochtaí sna healaíona traidisiúnta i gcomhar le hEalaín na Gaeltachta.

“Is iontach go deo go bhfuil grúpa de theagascóirí Chonamara tagtha le chéile anois chun an bhearna a bhí ann ó thaobh ranganna sa cheantar de a líonadh, go dtí go mbeidh Ealaín na Gaeltachta ag cur tús leis an gclár i nGaeltacht na Gaillimhe an bliain seo chugainn.

“Molaim an gréasán múinteoirí seo a thóg an cúram seo orthu féin agus tá an-áthas orm go bhfuil mé in ann tacú leo ina n-iarrachtaí.”

Global company Genesys has this morning announced that it will create two hundred new jobs in Galway.

The IT company will create the jobs after acquiring Galway company Altocloud which was based at the PorterShed.

Genesys has decided to relocate from the Portershed to newly-refurbished offices at Woodquay.

Sean Kyne TD was scheduled to attend the announcement this morning but was unable to due to the special cabinet meeting following the progress made in the Brexit negotiations.

The Galway TD welcomed the news, saying: “Today’s announcement of 200 highly-skilled ICT positions, particularly in research and development, will provide opportunities for local graduates of NUIG and GMIT while also attracting workers to the West of Ireland as Galway’s clusters of ICT and Life Sciences companies continue to go from strength to strength.

“It is always a source of pride to know that companies – global and local – are developing products and services right here in Galway that make such an impact and positive difference in countries around the world.

“I’d like to wish everyone at Genesys the very best for the days ahead and I hope today is just the beginning of a successful, beneficial and thriving association of Genesys with Galway.”

Ability West seeks approval for new residential centre

Galway Daily news Ability West plans new Headford day centre

Ability West, a charity dedicated to helping people with intellectual disabilities, is seeking approval for a new community home in Portumna.

The voluntary organisation, which already works at 13 locations across Galway city and county, has submitted a planning application for a new, single storey group home on Church road in Portumna.

The proposed development would be located beside an existing Ability West facility, St. Dympna’s Adult Day Service.

If allowed to go ahead, the new residential unit would serve as a group home for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Ability West says the location of the new development would be ideal for easy access between the day car facility and the group home.

The proximity would also make it easier for the group to staff this facility.

On top of those conveniences, it’s important for the people who might reside at this group home that it’s close to the amenities of the town.

This promotes inclusion in the community and helps the residents live as independently as possible.

The gross floor space of the proposed residential centre is 336m².

At a pre-planning meeting with the county council in September it was found that there was no objection to the project in principle.

Ability West has been providing services and support for people with an intellectual disability since 1962.

Galway County Council is due to give a decision on whether to allow the development to go ahead by December 12.

The Children’s Remembrance Day Committee at UHG celebrated the launch of their ‘sponsor a Christmas tree light’ yesterday evening in Crowe’s Bar, Bohermore.

A giant Christmas tree will be on display at the entrance to the hospital in December and people can sponsor a light on the tree as a dedication to a loved one.

Every time a light is dedicated to someone, their family receives a Christmas card and that person will also be remembered in three masses celebrated over the Christmas season in UHG.

Susan Massey from the Children’s Remembrance Day Committee explained: “Unfortunately many families have suffered bereavements during the year and sponsoring a light for someone who has passed away is a lovely way of letting family and friends know that we are thinking of them in a special way.

“Families may have loved ones who have emigrated and will not be home for Christmas and again sponsoring a light is a way to let them know they are in our thoughts.

“The funds raised through the sale of the Christmas tree lights are used to fund the activities of the Children’s Remembrance Day Committee throughout the year and any extra monies raised are used to enhance the services for bereaved families within the hospital.

“We were delighted that well known singer-songwriter Don Stiffe joined us to formally launch this year’s ‘sponsor a Christmas tree light’. The lights will be on sale at different times in the main foyer of UHG from 23 November until 9 December at a cost €5 each.”

If you would like to sponsor a Christmas tree light, please contact Children’s Remembrance Day Committee members Margaret Duignan on 085 8214443 or Susan Massey on 087 9452810 for more information.

On Sunday 9 December Galway Senior Footballer Paul Conroy will officially switch on the Christmas tree lights at UHG.

The afternoon’s festivities will commence at 3.00pm with music from the Conquerors and friends and the boys and girls from Scoil Cathríona Renmore will perform Christmas carols.
