Galway is Ireland’s second most wasp-infested county

0
news galway wasps most-infected

County Galway is the second most wasp-infested county in the country, a leading pest-control provider has claimed.

Galway accounted for ten percent of pest control company Rentokil’s call-outs over the summer, joined with Kildare and second only to Dublin.

The pest-control providers reported an increase of over 100 percent in the number of callouts for wasp infestations during July and August this year when compared to last summer.

Ireland’s record breaking temperatures this summer saw a steep rise in the number of home and business owners experiencing infestations from wasps.

Dr Moore said: “Wasps are most active in the late summer/autumn months. In Ireland, the Common and German Wasp cause the most annoyance with their distinctive yellow and black body.

“If you are experiencing high numbers of wasps in your home or garden there is likely to be a nest nearby. Although for the most part this is not an issue at the beginning of the season, this can sometimes be problematic as mature nests in summer can contain thousands of wasps and the behaviour of the workers changes towards September, when they become more aggressive.

“To avoid stings and keep you and your family safe, the best course of action is to avoid the nest and consider having it treated.  You do not need to have the nest removed in its entirety”.

The company received 9 percent of its calls from Mayo, the fourth highest in the country.

The five winners were announced by Aldi at the opening day of the National Ploughing Championships in Tullamore this week.

Over 3,500 homes in Galway still have no electricity after Storm Ali

Galway Daily news SHundreds of homes remain without power in Galway after severe weather

More than 3,500 homes and businesses in Galway still have no electricity this morning after massive outages across the city and county yesterday caused by Storm Ali.

At the peak of the bad weather yesterday, more than 15,000 customers in Galway lost their electricity with areas like Tuam North and Claregalway the worst hit.

And while the ESB hoped to restore power to all homes yesterday, there are still large numbers of people who still have no electricity today.

Ballygar is the worst hit this morning, where there are 783 customers who are waiting for the light to come on.

While yesterday’s victims Tuam North and Claregalway still have 730 and 599 premises with no electricity.

According to the ESB, many of those homes might not see their power restored until approximately 9 – 10pm tonight.

Nationwide, the ESB say there are still nearly 40,000 homes without power as crews scramble this morning to tackle over 1,600 individual network faults.

The majority of repairs needed are in Mayo, Longford, Cavan, and Monaghan.

During the chaos of Storm Ali yesterday, Swiss tourist Elvira Ferraii tragically lost her life at a camp site in Claddaghduff when the wind carried her caravan over a cliff onto the beach.

Galway was hit by the worst of the high winds yesterday, as Met Eireann recorded gusts of 143km/hr at Mace Head.

Though the weather caused travel chaos yesterday as roads and rail lines were impeded by fallen trees and flying debris, services have returned to normal this morning.

All Bus Eireann and Irish Rail services in Galway are operating as normal today.

And though they shut yesterday on the advice of gardaí, the National Ploughing Championships in Tullamore are back on today, and plan to open for an extra day tomorrow.

Bues Eireann have guaranteed that anyone who purchased a bus ticket to get to the ploughing championships yesterday can still use it today, or get a refund.

NUI Galway programme will train the next generation of disability rights advocates

Galway Daily news IWA launching Disability Action Group in Tuam

NUI Galway is coordinating a Europe wide programme to shape and improve our disability laws and policies by training the next generation of disability advocates.

The Disability and Advocacy Research for Europe programme at NUIG will recruit 15 researchers from around Europe over the next three years to develop recommendations for new disability laws and policies.

These new policies are meant to help Europe’s governments get in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Ireland signed the Convention back in 2007, and in March of this year it was ratified into law by the Dáil.

Now it;s up to the government and society to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy all the rights, freedoms, and dignities everyone is entitled to without discrimination.

Dr. Eilinóir Flynn, Principal Investigator with the programme, said: “The primary aim of DARE is to equip a new generation of researchers to respond to global challenges facing persons with disabilities and policy makers.

“Its goal is to give legitimacy, through research, to the lived experience of persons with disabilities, as a basis for law reform.”

To enable its work, the DARE training network has received a grant of €4.1 million from the European Commission’s Marie Curie programme.

It’s being led by the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at NUI Galway, working in partnership with seven other institutions in Europe.

The others taking part are the Institute for Social and Political Sciences, Portugal; Maastricht University, Netherlands; University of Leeds, UK; the European Disability Forum; the European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities; the University of Iceland; and Swiss Paraplegic Research.

All of the researchers recruited into this programme will be aided in their crucial studies by working with some of the leading groups advocating for the rights of people with a disability around the world.

Groups like Age Platform Europe, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions, Vision Sense, the European Association of Palliative Care, and many more.

Recruitment for the DARE programme will begin in September of 2019.

Rail travel on Galway line delayed by debris and fallen trees

Galway Daily news Rail chaos as debris and fallen trees cause delays on Galway line
Train window smashed by flying branch

Irish Rail passengers on the Galway line this evening should expect expect delays of up to half an hour caused by Storm Ali.

Rail travel has been heavily disrupted today by fallen trees blocking railway lines as gale force winds have battered Ireland and the west coast in particular.

While public transport networks have been consumed by chaos, rail services have improved from this morning when passengers on the Galway line were delayed by up to 90 minutes.

Currently Irish rail are advising passengers in the west that trains on the Galway and Westport lines will be running up to 30 minutes late due to the weather, while those on the Sligo line can expect delays of up to an hour.

The Belfast/Dublin and DART lines have also been affected by the weather, but all other services are running as normal.

Bus Eireann closed all services in Galway city this morning, but they have since re-opened with slight delays due to fallen trees on many roads.

Meanwhile many thousands of homes are still without power in Galway as rolling outage have spread throughout the city and county over the day.

While some areas like Screeb and Curra that were badly hit this morning have since had much of their power restored, continued bad weather has seen fresh outages in Salthill, Tuam, and Claregalway.

Tragically, Storm Ali has claimed two lives in Ireland so far today.

A woman in Galway was killed this morning when her caravan was blown off a cliff and onto the beach in Claddaghduff.

The woman, who was in her 50s, was just visiting Ireland from Switzeland, and was staying at a campsite in Claddaghduff.

Another man in his 20s was killed on the border of Armagh and Down this afternoon, and a another man in his 40s was injured.

The PSNI have said that the two were doing contract work for Northern Irish Water near Newry when a tree fell on them.

Gourmet Food Parlour opening in Salthill will bring 35 jobs to Galway

Galway Daily news Gourmet Food Parlour to open in Salthill creating 35 jobs

Gourmet Food Parlour is opening its first branch outside of Dublin in Salthill this October, creating 35 local jobs in the restaurant industry.

Managing Director of Galway Food Parlour, and a Galway woman herself, Lorraine Heskin said she’s thrilled that they’re coming to her home town.

“I was from out the road from Salthill in Barna, and that was another huge draw for me. I’m so excited, I literally can’t wait.”

Set up by Ms. Heskin and her business partner Lorraine Byrne, Gourmet Food Parlour has eight locations around Dublin, employing nearly 250 staff.

Along with the new restaurant in Salthill, they’re opening a new branch in Skerries, recruiting a hundred people in total around Ireland.

The restaurant is opening at Lenaboy Gardens just off the Upper Salthill road, Lorraine explained what drew them to that location.

“It’s just off the main street in Salthill, and if you look at our other locations around Dublin none of them are on a main street.”

“When you look at the residential population around Salthill, Knocknacarra, Barna, it’s a phenomenal population there a huge amount of commercial business there.”

“And then you look at all the tourists coming into Salthill, it’s becoming a really popular destination. And hopefully we’ll bring a little added bliss to the town,” Lorraine said.

She hopes that they’ll be open sometime before the end of October, and will be recruiting chefs, bar staff, baristas, and servers.

The restaurant in Lenaboy Gardens will seat over 100 people when it opens, but if that goes well it’s hoped that they’ll be able to bring the other side of their business to Galway as well.

“We have a catering and event business as well, and our dream would be to launch that in Galway as well. But we want to settle into the restaurant first,” Lorraine said.

Gourmet Food Parlour serves what Lorraine describes as an eclectic mix of European foods, open all day for breakfast, dinner, and with a brunch menu that’s proven extremely popular.

“We have a very simple philosophy, we only buy in enough for 24 to 36 hours trading, so everything is bought fresh from local sources,” Lorraine said.

“We’re just excited to bring Gourmet Food Parlour to the West, people around Galway have been so supportive and we can’t wait to get started.”

Tuam Home survivor Peter Mulryan tells his story in TG4 documentary

0
Galway Daily news Tuam Home survivor Peter Mulryan tells his story on TG4 documentary Finné

TG4’s documentary series Finne will be delving into personal side of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home scandal as survivor Peter Mulryan recounts his story.

Finné is a documentary series commission by TG4 exploring some of Ireland’s darkest episodes of tragedy and shame.

This week it will look the almost unbelievable events surrounding the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, and how they affected one person in particular.

From the excerpt introducing this week’s episode:

“Peter Mulryan was born in the Tuam Mother and Babies Home in 1951 and when he was due to marry, he became curious about his birth mother. This curiosity led him on a journey from the Home in Tuam to the Magdalene laundries in Galway where he found his mother to be hopelessly institutionalised, but managed to form a relationship with her prior to her death. It wasn’t until he met the local historian Catherine Corless in Tuam that he discovered that he may have a sister who was born in the Home in Tuam.”

In the time since Catherine Corless broke the story of the 796 Tuam Babies who could be buried on the site’s grounds, survivors of the Tuam Home have been reaching out to support each other.

Peter is one of the founding members of the Tuam Home Survivors Network, of which he became chairperson.

With the eyes of Ireland and the world on Tuam, Peter has told his story publicly, and demanded answers about the fate of his sister.

Born ten years after him, Marian Mulryan was taken from her mother in the Magdalene Laundry as a baby, and that is the last the is known of her with any certainty.

Peter has been vocal in wanting to know if his sister was one of the many children trafficked to America in an illegal adoption, or if she is one of the 796.

Inspired by Netflix, the Finné series tells the human side of some the biggest stories that have made Irish headlines in the past 50 years.

Filmed over the course of 12 months by Galway’s Magamedia, RTÉ’s court’s correspondent Orla O’Donnell presents these stories of injustice.

Peter’s story can be heard on TG4 this Wednesday, September 19 at 9:30pm, or on the RTÉ iPlayer after that.

This is the third programme in the Finné series, the two before this told the stories of Martin Conmey, who was wrongfully convicted of murdering his neighbour Una Lynskey in 1971, and Gail O’Rourke, who was charged with assisting her friend with multiple sclerosis commit suicide.

GALWAY GAA: 2018 Football All-Stars – THE FINAL!

"David Clifford" "Ciaran Kilkenny" "Paul Mannion" "Brian Fenton"

The semi-finals of the 2018 Galway Daily Football All-Stars saw the 45 remaining nominees whittled down to 30 ahead of today’s (Wednesday) finals.

All seven Galway contenders qualified for the final – Eoghan Kerin, Sean Kelly, Sean Andy O Ceallaigh, Tom Flynn, Damien Comer, Ian Burke, Shane Walsh.

Dublin have 10 players left, followed by Galway (7), Monaghan (6), Tyrone (3), Kerry (2) while Carlow and Donegal have one remaining player.  Cavan, Laois and Kildare saw their final nominees depart.

The adjudicators were called into making one decision in Group 2 of the Defenders section – and they sided with Jonny Cooper over John Small.

Those unlucky to be eliminated included John Small (Dublin), Peter Harte (Tyrone), Drew Wylie (Monaghan) and Gavin White (Kerry).

The finals will see eight groups.  The remaining two goalkeepers will battle head-to-head for one place.  And there will be seven groups containing four players each across the other three categories (three defenders, one midfielder, three forwards).

The top two from each of these groups will make the team along with the goalkeeper and the players were seeded based on the semi-final results.

So, join us in deciding our team of the year.  All ties will be decided by our adjudication committee and we look forward to seeing what 15 players make the final cut on Thursday (20th September).

Abbeyknockmoy Hurling

Seniors lost to Athenry by 3-11 to 0-14 at the weekend. Athenry with two early goals made it a hilly start for Abbey but they fought back to be only three down at break 2-3 to 0-6.

It was tit for tat all the way through second half and Abbey were three down approaching full time when they received a penalty which was then inexplicably changed to a ’21 after the referee consulted with the umpire. The definition of inside the box must be different in Loughrea.

Unfortunately, the ’21 was missed and Athenry wrapped up proceedings with a late goal.

A good performance from the lads. Paul Flaherty was superb from play and on the frees as usual. We now have one game left against Ardrahan. We are level on points with Moycullen but we have a superior scoring difference.

Hopefully we can beat Ardrahan so we won’t have to be relying on the Athenry Moycullen result to avoid the relegation scrap.

Our U15’s backed up the Pearses win with a win over Ardrahan last week. Well done lads.

Round 3 report from Kilconeiron game next week. Abbey already into cup semi final which is on Thursday 20th.

Full club meeting tonight (Wed) at 9pm

There is a golf classic fundraiser for the Galway senior hurling training fund on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th of September in Portumna Golf club.

Teams of four €200, food on the course, spot prizes on the day and the best GAA club top ranked team will receive a special GAA prize.

If anyone wants to enter a team, sponsor a tee box at €50 or give any support it would be greatly appreciated.

The hurlers have given us massive enjoyment over last few years and would be great to show our support not only on the big days but in preparation for next year also.
