County Junior C1 Hurling Final – Sunday, 7th October 2018

Rahoon/Newcastle 0-13 Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry 1-9 (Loughrea)

(Photos: courtesy – Joe Keane)

Rahoon Newcastle defeated Tynagh Abbey Duniry in a windy Loughrea to win the Junior C1 Championship for the first time on a score line of 0-13 to 1-9. This was the club’s first year to have three adult mens teams.

After winning Junior C last year, a third team was entered into the C1 competition to cater for the growing number of players.

At half time, Rahoon led 0-10 to 0-4 having played with the breeze.  A Tynagh goal early in the second half closed the gap to two points but Rahoon held on to secure back to back Junior championships. This was the teams tenth game in the competition with just the one loss.

There were great performances in the defence from goalkeeper John Keane, Sean Heffernan, Robert Keane, Sean Coyne, James Kerr, Paul Joyce and captain Mark Keane.

In midfield, Diarmuid O Connor and Brian Madden were on top and in our forwards Tim Gilmore, Kevin Derrane, Damien O Brien, Paul Doolin, Peter Killeen and Darach Mac Con Iomaire all worked hard in tough conditions.

Subs Bryan Cloherty, Josh Curtin, Tom Clancy and Andrew O Halloran all made big contributions on their introductions. The celebrations kicked off with a spin around the parish with the new trophy and continued into the early hours in Sheridans, Knocknacarra.

Huge credit to management team of Pat McGrath, Robert Earley, John Kerr and Seamus Burke.

Eimear was joined by team mates Chloe Mannion, Aisling Hession, Saoirse Maguire and Evie Gallagher. The girls won the team bronze based on their combined finishing positions.

Two teams from the club took part in the Boys U9s race. The boys did not disappoint with four athletes from the club finishing in the top 7 in what was a thrilling race.

Cian McGinn, Eanna McGrath, Odhran Kelly and Thomas Riordan all ran exceptionally well with Cian just edged out of first position by Alan Hallinan from Craughwell AC.

Well done to Cian McGinn (2nd), Eanna McGrath (3rd), Odhran Kelly (4th), Thomas Riordan (7th), Oisin Munnelly (13th) and Ben Hynes (17th) who claimed the gold medal in the team event.

The boys U13 team won the silver medal in the team event with Oisin Phelan running an outstanding race to finish in second position. Oisin was joined by team members Cian Halligan (9th), Sean Rhattigan (10th), Ross Mitchell (12th), Ryan O’ Donnell (15th) and Kevin Munnelly (16th).

Finally, well done to Ciara Maguire who finished in 7th position in the Girls U17 4k race and who has qualified for the Connacht XC Championships next month.

Glen Celtic AFC

Well done to our Senior team on their 3-1 win over St Cuan’s on Sunday last in Castleblakeney. This brought us to four away wins out of four.  We started brightly and took the lead when Sean Gallagher crossed from the left and PJ Shanks hit an unstoppable volley past the keeper with a great strike.

However, we had a lapse in concentration and let St Cuan’s back into it when a long ball over the top was latched onto by Cuan’s Jordan O’Leary who despite the best efforts of Seamus Comer managed to score the equaliser.  Half time score was 1-1.

We took the lead five minutes into the second half when Sean Gallagher again crossed from the left and once again found PJ Shanks who finished from close range. The third goal followed shortly afterwards when once again a cross from the left by Sean Gallagher eluded the keeper and ended up in the net.

With St Cuan’s looking to get back into the game it left opportunities for us to extend our lead and we were unlucky with Ryan McHugh and Steven Fox both hitting the frame of the goal.

This along with some great defending left us holding out for a deserved win which leaves us top of the table coming up to the half way point of the season.

Team: Seamus Comer, James Burke, Anthony Comer, Michael Heneghan, Sean Gallagher, Jason Connelly, Owen Mcstay, Michael Geary, Pj Shanks, Ryan McHugh, Micheal Geraghty.

Subs: Simon Stachurski, Paul Gannon, Owen Newman, Peter Thomas Keaveney, Ciarán Trautt, Andrew King, Steven Fox.

Glenamaddy/Williamstown Ladies GAA

Congratulations to our Intermediate girls and management team on winning the Intermediate B Championship Cup Final beating Menlough Skehana 4-8 to 1-8.

Glenamaddy/Williamstown got off to a shaky start but a goal from Noelle Connolly midway through the first half proved to be the settling factor for our ladies.

Excellent displays throughout the field resulted in the score at half time of 2-3 to 1-4 with our second goal coming from Megan Heneghan. In the second half all players dug deep with goals coming from Rebecca Kelly and Amy O Brien. This was a great team effort with all players giving 100%.

Joint captains Johanna Connolly and Hazel Deane accepted the cup and thanked all the supporters present.  They also thanked the management team of Peter Keaveney, David Brady, Patricia Keady and Mary Fahy and our main sponsor ECC for their continued sponsorship of our club.

SPORT: Mary Maloney is GAA Healthy Hero

0
Mary Maloney

Ballinderreen’s Mary Maloney was among the winners at the Healthy Club Conference in Croke Park which saw volunteers honoured for their exceptional efforts in promoting the GAA’s Healthy Club Project.

Mary is the lead member of the Healthy Club and a member of the club executive. Her vision led to her club being the first Galway club to set up the initiative.

Mary is a very active member, heavily involved in all fundraising efforts, and encourages people across all demographics to get involved in the GAA club.

She organises a monthly lunch and bingo game for older members of the locality, as well as a weekly card game and an annual choir concert.

The Healthy Club Project started in 2014 with just 16 clubs, four from each province, involved. It currently engages 150 clubs, multiples in each county. The project aims to broaden the traditional boundaries of a GAA club, turning clubs into hubs for health in the communities.

It involves a partnership with Healthy Ireland, the National Office for Suicide Prevention, the HSE, and is proudly supported by Irish Life.

Clubs focus on a range of health topics, including healthy eating; mental fitness and emotion wellbeing; physical activity for non-playing members; gambling drug, and alcohol awareness (including becoming smoke-free clubs); engaging older community members; and the provision of games for persons with special needs and those from minority groups, amongst other things.

Participating clubs were asked to nominate their Healthy Club Heroes: someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in serving the health and wellbeing needs of their clubs’ members and the communities they serve.

Dublin All Ireland winner, All Star, and Player of the Year nominee, Brian Fenton, was on-hand to present the recipients with their awards in Croke Pak on Saturday and Mary’s was Galway’s representative among 24 winners.

GAA: Joyce and Daly Among Galway Manager Contenders

0
Jeffrey Lynskey, Tony Ward,

The nominations for three Galway inter county jobs have been announced though there looks to be only a battle on two fronts.

Athenry’s Brian Hanley, who stepped in to help train Beagh’s senior hurlers maintain their senior status, is the only candidate for the Minor (under 17) position.  Hanley oversaw the Galway under 16s to national glory in 2018 and previously managed the Westmeath seniors.

Three-time All-Ireland winning manager Jeffrey Lynskey will go up against outgoing under 21 manager Tony Ward for the under 20 hurling role.  Ward was under 21 manager the last three years and led Galway to the Leinster title in 2018.

And there will be major interest in who succeeds Gerry Fahy as Galway under 20 manager as six names have been put forward.

Former All-Ireland Galway star Padraic Joyce is in contention along with 80s icon Val Daly.  But they’ll be up against experienced campaigners including Stephen Joyce who brought the minors to an All-Ireland final in 2016 and was part of John O’Mahony’s senior winning management in 1998 and 2001.

Kieran Collins, who won under 16 and minor ladies titles with Galway in 2017 and 2018.  Lloyd Kelly won the 2017 County under 21 title with St. Gabriel’s before retaining their intermediate status.  And Kevin Johnson was part of the Mayo title winning Ballintubber outfit last weekend (20th October).

Under 20 Hurling Nominations – Jeffrey Lynskey (Liam Mellows), Tony Ward (Sarsfields)

Under 20 Football Nominations – Kieran Collins (Kilconly), Val Daly (Mountbellew/Moylough), Kevin Johnson (Salthill/Knocknacarra), Lloyd Kelly (Ballinasloe), Padraic Joyce (Killererin), Stephen Joyce (An Fhairce-Clonbur)

Under 17 Hurling Nomination – Brian Hanley (Athenry)

Survey reveals main reason professionals are moving to Galway

Galway Daily news IBAL litter survey

An improved quality of life and a healthier work-life balance are the main reasons some professionals have decided to move to the West, a new survey has revealed.

The results of the survey, published in the Irish Independent today, show that 90% of those who recently moved to the West said that their hope for an improved quality of life was the main reasons they moved.

Seventy-five percent also said that they now have a better work-life balance.

The survey asked almost 200 people their reasons for recently moving to Galway and Mayo.

Gaway East TD Ciaran Cannon said that the survey results provide yet another argument in favour of the Quiet Man Greenway.

Minister Cannon said: “The results of a survey conducted by HR Group Collins McNicholas in conjunction with IDA Ireland and published in this morning’s online Irish Independent, provide plenty of food for thought for both supporters of the Quiet Man Greenway and, indeed, anyone who still doubts the project.

“In the survey of almost 200 people who recently relocated to either Galway or Mayo, nine out of ten cited the hope of an improved quality of life as the main reason behind the move and three out of four have said that there is now a more enhanced balance between their working and home lives.

“I`m particularly pleased to note the view of the regional manager at IDA Ireland who has expressed strong faith in the West`s ability to attract Foreign Direct Investment while continuing to increase employment in existing businesses.”

Liadh Ní Riada will challenge ‘cozy consensus’, says Cllr Farrell at Sinn Féin commemoration

0

Sinn Féin Councilor Mairéad Farrell wholeheartedly endorsed Liadh Ní Riada during the annual Sinn Féin commemoration of Mícheál Breathnach last Saturday.

Mícheál Breathnach was elected as a Sinn Féin Councilor for Galway’s East Ward in 1919. He subsequently met his death through summary execution by the Black and Tans. Among those in the crowd was the family of Míchaél Breathnach.

Giving the oration at Bohermore Cemetery on a darkened Tuesday afternoon, the City East Councilor remarked that ‘commemorations give time to reflect on the kind of Republic that we want’.

“What we want is not some aesthetic change in the make up of this Country, we want a fundamental transformation of the society in which we live,” she said.

The Sinn Féin Councilor asserted the onus to remember Galway republicans like Mícheal Breathnach who she said was murdered for his belief that Ireland could be a completely different place.

In addition, she affirmed that although it was a different time these Republicans were activists ‘just like us’.

Mairéad Farrell made a point in stressing her belief that Sinn Féin are challenging the cosy consensus of the establishment by contesting the presidential election. She then emphasized how crucial it was to proudly campaign and canvass for Líadh Ni Riada ‘to show people that things can be different’.

Cllr. Farrell highlighted her belief that Ireland was on the cusp of great change evidenced by the increasing conversations about a United Ireland on the back of Brexit. The Councilor was quick to point out however, that in her view the reason why there is no United Ireland today lies with both the London and Dublin Government.

In making reference to the homeless and housing crisis, the Sinn Féin Councilor referenced a prediction by Galway Republican Liam Mellows that ‘whoever assumes power in the 26 County State would cling onto that power’, and she believes that this prediction has been proven true.

For this reason, Mairéad Farrell urged the people of Galway to vote and support the Líadh Ni Riada as the next president of Ireland in an attempt to give the ‘cosy consensus’ a challenge.

The commemoration was organised by the Galway West Sinn Féin youth wing named after Míchaél Breathnach.

Speaking to Galway Daily, the Chairperson, Jasmine Shaw stated how in her opinion the state has ‘failed abysmally to commemorate republicans with dignity or respect’.

In addition to this, Jasmine expressed her pessimism that the state ‘will only commemorate republicans in a tokenistic manner whenever public opinion demands it’. Jasmine then elaborated on her plans for the day which included canvassing for Sinn Féin’s Liadh Ní Riada in the Claddagh.

It is clear the canvass team for Liadh Ní Riada has tough ask to even get their candidate in second according to the polls.

Despite this, the Sinn Féin team are as eager as ever to canvass Galway.

They have little to lose and are determined to try and make some impact.

Taxi driver punched twice in the head due to traffic

0
Galway Daily crime Assault and car jacking after taxi drive attacked in Barna

A Galway man pleaded guilty to assault in Galway District Court on Monday after punching a taxi driver twice in the head due to traffic.

62-year-old Martin O’Sullivan wanted to get from Eyre Square to Francis Street – only two blocks away – at around 6pm on September 21 last year.

The court heard from the injured party that his taxi was stuck in heavy rush hour traffic for a long period of time.

As the fare continued to climb – eventually reaching €9 – O’Sullivan first complained, and then started hitting the driver.

The taxi driver described how he was punched in the left ear while still holding on to the steering wheel, nearly causing an accident.

He managed to keep control of the car and withstand the blows until two passers-by came to his rescue.

The victim said he paid over €100 in emergency medical treatment on the day.

He has driven taxis for about ten years.

District Court Judge Mary Fahy called the attack “outrageous”, saying that as it happened in a moving vehicle it was very dangerous to everyone involved.

“Traffic in Galway is crazy but there’s nothing we can do about it,” she said. “He should have got out and walked.”

Defense solicitor Valerie Corcoran agreed that there was “no excuse” for her client’s behaviour and asked the judge to give O’Sullivan some time to gather money for compensation.

O’Sullivan is a retired carpenter and has five previous convictions, all road traffic related.

The judge gave him until 21 January to come up with €500 compensation for the injured party before sentencing.

Four Galway towns and villages discharging raw sewage

0
Galway Daily news Lack of sewerage infrastructure impeding housing Galway TD says

Four towns and villages across Galway are still discharging raw sewage into waterways according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Roundstone, Carraroe, and Spiddal on Galway Bay, and Ahascragh in East Galway are not treating their sewage properly according to the EPA’s report on Urban Waste Water for 2017.

Overall the EPA found that 38 towns and villages around Ireland are still discharging raw sewage into rivers, canals, and the ocean.

The EPA has prosecuted Irish Water for delays in providing water treatment plants in six of those areas.

A further 28 large towns and cities have been dumping raw sewage into the water.

It’s estimated that the Spiddal area alone discharges some 600 wheelie bins worth of raw sewage into Galway Bay every day.

Planning permission was granted this month for a new wastewater treatment plant for Spiddal to end this.

Locals in Carraroe have been opposed to Irish Water’s plan for a new treatment plant at the pier because of its proximity to people’s homes.

Commenting on the report Dr Tom Ryan, Director of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Enforcement said: “Ireland is not addressing the deficiencies in its waste water treatment infrastructure at a fast-enough pace.”

“It is unacceptable that, 13 years after the final deadline to comply with treatment standards, there are still 28 large towns and cities discharging inadequately treated sewage that fails to meet these standards. ”

“This is putting our health at risk and is having an impact on our rivers, lakes and coastal waters,” he finished.

The EPA says that though there have been some improvements since the last annual report, a legacy of underinvestment in infrastructure is still hurting the environment.

In order to tackle serious environmental concerns, the EPA says resources must be targeted to the areas where they can have the most effect.

There are 57 areas where sewage discharge is the sole environmental threat to rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.

Upgrades works are also needed at four beaches with poor quality bathing water including Clifden, Merion Strand, Loughshinny, and Sandymount Strand.

Darragh Page, Programme Manager of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Enforcement said, “A substantial increase in the rate of investment is necessary to provide the infrastructure needed to treat our waste water.”

“Irish Water also needs to improve its understanding of the condition and performance of sewers, to help focus sewer upgrade works where they are most urgently needed.”

ATHLETICS: Run Jump Throw Series Receives Excellent Feedback

0
Run Jump Throw

The 1st Run Jump Throw series of coaching workshops recently took place across September and October 2018 in Dangan, Co. Galway.

The idea for the workshops was designed around introducing developmental coaches to the basics of some new events, ideas and coaching methods to be able to deliver appropriate sessions in running, jumping and throwing events back in their clubs.

Athletes, 12 and older, could attend the workshops for free each of the evenings and Coaches were sent a Run Jump Throw (RJT) coaching document via email on each of the disciplines covered that week.

Each of the nights focused on 2 specific events (Week 1 – Sprints & Shot Putt, Week 2 – High Jump & Javelin, Week 3 – Long Jump & Hurdles).

Two different events chosen on purpose each night in the hope that even if a coach only wanted to learn about hurdles that they would stay and learn something new in the Long Jump for example.

The importance of a multi events style of coaching was reinforced throughout the three weeks of the RJT and even at this time of year when Cross Country is to the fore, technical events like the HJ, Shot and Hurdles etc can still be introduced and incorporated into weekly training sessions.

Week 1

The importance of a multi event approach was highlighted and detailed excellently by National Decathlon Champion and Regional Development Officer, Shane Ashton who was on hand on Week 1 to deliver Sprints and Shot Putt elements.

Week 2

Paul Byrne, Regional Development Officer (RDO), delivered both High Jump (HJ) and Javelin disciplines during Week 2’s session.  Javelin thrower Conor Cusack and Coach Padraig Joyce (Lake District AC) gave some excellent tips and coached the group of coaches

Week 3

The third session of the RJT Workshops was postponed a couple of times but coaches were treated to a beautiful final evening in Dangan before Storm Callum hit the west coast. Paul Byrne led the two event groups of Long Jump and Hurdles and it was great to see a great turn out for final session.

In total 34 coaches and 15 athletes took part in the RJT workshops. Feedback has been excellent and the hope is that this style of workshop will be delivered in different regions in the coming months.

Thank you to the Galway County Board for giving the idea the green light, NUIG AC for allowing us to share the track each evening and to each end every coach/athlete that showed up to learn and try something new.

For more information please contact Paul Byrne, Regional Development Officer for Clare, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Longford & Offaly on paulbyrne@athleticsireland.ie.

Galway city to light up again this Christmas with festive lights display

0
Galway Daily new Galway city Christmas lights

Galway city will light up this Christmas as the city council has agreed plans for festive lights to decorate the city streets.

The city council has set aside €150,000 to provide “an iconic festive light and colour experience” this Christmas.

Mayor of Galway Niall McNelis said that lights “will maximise the Christmas experience in Galway and will act as beacon and attraction points across the city.”

Many business groups in the city made a joint submission to the council supporting a great display of light and colour.

Some of the groups that have been working on this include Galway City Business Association, Galway Latin Quarter, Galway Westend, Galway Latin Quarter, Woodquay Galway, and The Village Salthill.

This year’s Christmas lights will be unveiled on November 16 on the same day as the opening of the Christmas Market.

Of course, there are always some that like to get out ahead of the pack.

There was some embarrassment last week as engineers had already begun to erect Christmas lights along shop street under a contract with Galway City Business Association.

However the had to quickly take them down again, because the Macnas Halloween parade wouldn’t fit under them.

County council rejects plans for apartment buildings in Oranmore

0
Galway daily news Knocknacarra social housing

Galway County Council has denied permission for a housing development of eight apartments in Oranmore.

It was planned to demolish a single storey office building on Main Street, Oranmore and build two apartment buildings in its place.

The development would have included one block with two 1-bed apartments and three 2-bed apartments, and another with one 1-bed apartment and two 2-bed homes.

The owner of the site, John Curley, had previously been denied permission by the county council to demolish the office and build three retail units in its place.

At the time the county council said it was because this land is designated for Residential use only under the area development plan.

A number of objections were filed to the from locals nearby and the Oranmore Community Development Association.

They said that the size of the project was too large for the site, and were also concerned about the lack of onsite car parking in the plans.

The application stated that the apartment residents could make use of the public car park across the street.

County planners noted in their report that the developers intended to connect the apartment buildings up with Irish Water.

But since no pre-connection query form or evidence of communication with Irish Water was contained in the application, they were unable to determine if the public mains and sewers could cater to the apartments.

For the reasons stated above the county council decided not to grant planning permission for the development.
