Two World Premiers announced for Galway Film Fleadh

The Galway Film Fleadh is just around the corner.

And the Fleadh, which will take place from 10 – 15 July, has revealed two World Premieres and two Irish premieres making up part of its 30th festival programme.

A new documentary charting a volatile period in the career of champion boxer Katie Taylor will have its world premiere at Galway and Don’t Go, a psychological thriller starring Stephen Dorff and Melissa George and filmed in the west of Ireland, will also have its world premiere at the Fleadh.

The Film Fleadh will this year host a number of special events and celebrations to mark its 30th anniversary.

Today’s title announcements are among the first confirmed for the Fleadh, which will also include Irish premieres of stop-motion animated film Captain Morten and the Spider Queen and UK horror Possum.

The Katie Taylor documentary, Katie, is an intimate take on the boxer’s efforts to rebuild her career following a year of turmoil in her life.

Dublin-based Wildcard Distribution has already acquired UK and Irish rights to the film. Directed by Ross Whitaker, the film follows the boxer as she aims to reboot her career on foot of a surprising defeat at the Rio Olympics, where she failed to defend her London Olympics crown.

Following that disappointment, she made the decision to turn professional and put women’s boxing on the map.

Don’t Go, a psychological thriller starring Stephen Dorff and Melissa George, will have its world premiere in Galway. Directed and co-written by David Gleeson, who penned the screenplay for the forthcoming drama Tolkien, it tells the story of a couple reeling from the death of their daughter in an accident.

Captain Morten And The Spider Queen, which will have its Irish premiere at the Fleadh, is described the first feature film to be animated in stop-motion in Ireland. The film tells the story of a boy who must learn to adapt when he is shrunk to the size of an insect, and opts to captain his toy ship. A co-production, it features an impressive Irish voice cast including Brendan Gleeson, Ciarán Hinds, Pauline McLynn, Tommy Tiernan, Jason Byrne and Mario Rosenstock.

British horror film Possum, starring Sean Harris (Prometheus), will have its Irish premiere at Galway. The film stars Harris as a disgraced puppeteer who returns to his childhood home with his hand puppet. He confronts his stepfather and is forced to evaluate secrets from his past in writer/director Matthew Holness’s psychological thriller.

Further domestic and international films to screen at Galway, as well as festival guests and special events to mark its 30th anniversary, will be announced at a later date.

Speaking about the selection of films, Galway Film Fleadh CEO Miriam Allen said, “We are delighted to announce these four films that we hope will whet the appetite of our audiences for the variety of cinema screening at Galway in July.”

Also speaking about the announcement GFF programmer William Fitzgerald said, “Katie, Don’t Go, Captain Morten and Possum are indicative of the exciting range of docs, dramas, animations and international cinema that will be on display at Galway in July.”

GALWAY WFC: AISLINN MEANEY NOMINATED FOR PLAYER OF THE MONTH

The Continental Tyres Women’s National League Player of the Month nominees for May 2018 have been confirmed and Galway WFC’s Aislinn Meaney is among the three contenders. 

Meaney was nominated in March/April as well and she has already scored three goals for Galway this season.  The Irish international has maintained her high standards both domestically and for her country.

The Clare woman made her international debut in January 2018 against Portugal and is currently in her first year studying Arts in NUI Galway.

She joined the Tribeswomen from Lifford Ladies and made her Galway league debut at just 17.  The 19-year-old also spent time in the Irish Youths set-up after being selected back in 2014.

She is nominated alongside Wexford Youth’s Rianna Jarrett, who was called up to the Irish Team, and Karen Duggan from Peamount United, who moved from UCD Waves before the campaign.

Galway Women’s FC next outing in the Continental Tyres Women’s National League is against Shelbourne LFC on Saturday, 23rd June.  Kick-off in the Morton Stadium is 4pm.

Galway 2020 creative director Chris Baldwin has left the organisation, according to a statement released Wednesday.

Citing ‘personnel changes’, the group noted the planning of its programme’s implementation phase would still go ahead as expected.

Chris Baldwin – a British performance director, curator, and writer – was appointed to develop the programme of events for Galway 2020 in July last year.

He was curator of Interdisciplinary Performance for Wroclaw, European Capital of Culture 2016 in Poland and has over 20 years’ experience producing international cultural projects and festivals all over the EU.

However, the Irish Times reported that he “has been on sick leave for some weeks”.

Galway City councillor and former mayor Padraig Conneely expressed serious concerns in the project’s future.

But the City’s chief executive Brendan McGrath – who sits on the Galway 2020 board – was quoted as saying he had “complete confidence” in Galway 2020.

According to the organisation’s statement, “Following these changes the Board of Galway 2020 has reviewed the composition of the cultural leadership required to deliver an exciting and innovative world class programme and will make an announcement on this in the coming weeks.”

In other words, Galwegians can expect an announcement on Baldwin’s replacement – new ‘cultural leadership’ for the programme – in the near future.

Galway 2020 also went on to announce the appointment of three new producers: Liz Kelly with the “Small Towns Big Ideas” project, Kate Howard as Visual Arts Curator, and Craig Flaherty as Audience Development and Programme producer.

A few events have already kicked off, such as the “Small Town Big Ideas” community funding project, the “Wires Crossed” tightwire walking workshops, and the “Symphonic Waves” youth ensemble orchestra.

The full Galway 2020 events programme will be published later this year.

GALWAY GAA: “It’s A Big Ask For Us” – DAVY FITZGERALD

Wexford senior hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald knows his team face a major hurdle today (Saturday) when they welcome the All-Ireland champions to Innovate Wexford Park in their third game of the Leinster Championship round-robin series. 

The Slaneysiders scored a 1-23 to 0-23 victory over Galway in the league quarter-final in March dethroning the Tribesmen.  But after consecutive games against Dublin and Offaly, Fitzgerald feels a third game in succession is going to be a tall order for this troops.

“You can’t look ahead to the other game,” said Fitzgerald to John Fogarty in the Irish Examiner.  “All I know is to play Galway and Kilkenny in your last two games isn’t ideal. I love the Championship; I just wanted another extra week or two instead of running it over five weeks.

“Just give it an extra week or two and that isn’t a whole pile. Just give it that much more and I think you will have an incredible Championship. The attendances are pointing towards that.

“It’s a big ask for us. I’ve said it before but the thing that bothers me is us having to play four weeks in a row. Physically, this is going to be a very demanding game. When you play Galway, you’ll cover a lot of ground and there will be a lot of hits and it’ll be an exciting game.

“We’re playing the All-Ireland champions and from what I saw of their last game (against Kilkenny), they’re the best team in the Championship without a shadow of a doubt.”

One Galway restaurant must close over food safety concerns

One Galway restaurant must close its doors after being issued with a Closure Order by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

Salthill Social, in Lenaboy Gardens, Salthill, was one of eleven businesses across the country to be served with a closure order in the month of May.

Five businesses were in Dublin, two in Cork, and one in Carlow, Wexford and Tipperary.

As of June 1st, the Closure Order for Salthill Social has not been lifted.

Six closure orders were lifted shortly after they were issued.

Longford Town vs Galway United

Galway United suffered another First Division setback on Friday night (1st June) when they lost to 10-man Longford Town at the City Calling Stadium. 

The hosts struck two first half goals from Aodh Dervin and Sam Verdon to lead 2-0 at half-time but Galway United were given a lifeline when Longford’s Darren Meenan received a straight red card for a challenge on Marc Ludden.

Conor Barry gave the Tribesmen hope when he scored on 56 minutes but a penalty 11 minutes later for Galway was struck over the bar by Alan Murphy.

Karl Chambers put the result beyond doubt with Longford’s third goal 10 minutes from time before Stephen Walsh grabbed an 87th minute consolation.

The result sees Galway United drop to fifth place, eight points behind leaders UCD.  Highlights, supplied by Longford Town TV are available below. 

Galway United’s next game in the 2018 SSE Airtricity League First Division takes place on Monday, 4th June against Cobh Ramblers.  Kick-off in St. Colman’s Park is 7.15pm.

Visa Outage Sparked Chaos around Galway Yesterday

Many Galwegians and those visiting the City of the Tribes were affected by a Visa Outage yesterday afternoon sparking pandemonium around the city and county.

Yesterday afternoon, chaos erupted around Galway as Visa cards failed to work throughout the afternoon and well into the evening.

Initially stores around Galway came to the solution that it was an internal problem within their own branch, until realising pretty quickly that it seemed to be a nationwide problem with Visa cards.

It was certainly not an ideal situation on a Friday evening of a June bank holiday weekend with fears sparking that the problem would continue right through the weekend – leaving people strapped for cash.

Cash is most certainly something people didn’t seem to have as they queued up to pay for their groceries only to be told their card had declined.

This led to a backup in-store while customers tried to figure out their best options, as ATM’s around Galway had also been affected by the same problem.

Technology brings you back to reality with a bang when an incident like this occurs, with people remembering that cash is king on days like yesterday.

Panic stations erupted throughout Galway as people continuously tried to use their card but to no avail – with customers having no choice but to leave the items in store and return at a later point with cash.

This caused issues for staff members who were working as quickly as possible to try and process each transaction, yet they could not have foreseen the problem.

This problem, a nationwide Visa outage had also affected the EU but it seems to be more or less back in action and working to full affect today as Visa issued an apology to customers late last night.

People over on Twitter were outraged at the problem occurring on a Friday evening of a Bank Holiday, with people also tweeting about how embarrassed they felt when their card declined.

If yesterday thought us anything it is that going cashless in favour of cards could be a huge mistake so maybe keep a small bit of cash in your wallet to prepare for future disasters like yesterday.

Traffic information for Galway V Sligo (Sunday, Pearse Stadium)

Galway GAA are advising people that traffic could be slow in the city before the Galway vs Sligo match at Pearse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Because it is a Bank Holiday Weekend, visitor numbers to the city is expected to be high and Galway GAA are advising people to allow sufficient time to get to the match.

Those travelling from the east of the City should also be aware that there is a music festival at Galway Airport throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Carnmore Cross and the R381 (Claregalway/Oranmore link road)  and R339 (Monivea Road) routes should be avoided.

The following Car Parks are designated for this Event.

            Colaiste Einde:            547 spaces (Parking fee)

            GTI (Fr.Griffin Rd.)      200 Car parking spaces (hard surface)

            St. Mary College:        922 spaces (Parking fee)

In addition, patrons are encouraged to park in Car Parks in Galway City and to walk or travel by public transport to/from Pearse Stadium.

The 401 Bus will Bus service from Eyre Square to Salthill will operate every 15 minutes from 1pm.

Patrons should avoid illegal parking and obstructing bicycle lanes along Western Distributor Road as illegal parking has been ticketed at recent events.

St Mary’s and GTI are at worst no more than 5 minutes additional walk. Colaiste Einde is less than 5 minutes from THE nearest Stadium entrance.

Former Kilkenny hurler Tommy Walsh believes Galway’s belief has gone to unchartered heights and have no doubts about their ability to compete with any side. 

The nine-time All-Ireland winner was impressed with the way Micheal Donoghue’s chargese dealt with the basics in their 1-22 to 2-11 victory over Kilkenny in Pearse Stadium last Sunday (27th May).

“I’d say their belief has gone up two or three notches,” said Walsh speaking on Newstalk’s Off The Ball on Thursday night (31st May).  “They still have the same physiques. They still have the same hurlers. They still have the same ability, but they seem to be saying this is my time now.

“I love the fundamentals; the ability to win their own ball, the ability to score, the ability to hook and block, the ability to chase you man when you shouldn’t be chasing him when you should be giving up.

“They are my principles from the coaches and managers that have coached and managed me down through the years. That’s what I’ve learnt off them, and Galway had all of that last Sunday, and it was a joy to watch.”

Former Galway hurling captain David Collins has said that all involved in Galway hurling knows the importance of building on their 2017 All-Ireland success and that the team are mentally prepared to deal with their role as defending champions. 

Collins, who finished his inter county senior career in 2016, has stressed the work that needs to be done at club level highlighting his own team, Liam Mellows, who were building for the future before their County Senior success last December (2017).

“My own club, Liam Mellows, has huge numbers at underage level and we have taken on a full-time Games Development Officer,” said Collins to Damian Lawlor from balls.ie.

“A role which we fund ourselves, to ensure that all the kids are being coached in their schools and when they come down to us at the weekends.

“Galway City is a spot that needs to be constantly looked at. But there is a feeling now that the hard work is only starting – across all levels and grades in the county.

“There was a huge crowd at Pearse Stadium for the Kilkenny game last Sunday (27th May) and you could see Salthill and the city come alive.

“Some of the teams I was on myself, well we had up days and down days, and maybe sometimes we got distracted. But I just can’t see the concentration levels of the current lads slipping. They are all fierce humble fellas, they are intent on winning.

“They will want to stay winning and from what I can see their conditioning has gone up a notch from last year.”

2007 Connacht football winner David Kelly believes Galway also had the dangerous players but Kevin Walsh has added discipline and structure to the Tribesmen. 

The corner forward, who also won two Sigerson Cups with DCU, was part of the Sligo team that beat Galway to win their first provincial title in 32 years and played under Walsh who helped the Yeats men to further championship wins against his native county in 2010 and 2012.

“The one thing that jumps out at me this year is the structure,” said Kelly to Stephen Glennon in the Connacht Tribune.  “They are way more organised and it is not easy to play against them. It is not easy to score against them.

“They have always had dangerous players. They have always had those mavericks who could blow you away but, maybe, they just hadn’t had that discipline or structure in their game. That is what Kevin has probably brought in. I don’t think any team will like to play them.”

“He (Walsh) was a manager and he took on that role and he delegated the other roles to other coaches. He was a very good man manager.

“He doesn’t say stuff for the sake of saying stuff and he is not overly vocal but he gets across what he needs to get across. When he was with us, they were probably some of our best times with Sligo. We had a good run of years.

“We all saw him going back to Galway and that was always going to be the case.”

Tuam man sentenced for “nasty, cowardly, and vicious” assault on Christmas Eve

A Tuam man suffered permanent injuries to his face after a “vicious” assault on Christmas Eve while he was out on the town.

Alan Cahill (29), from 31 Cois na hAbhainn, Tuam, was sentenced this week at Galway Circuit Court for his part in an assault on Stephen Murphy (43) in Tuam on Christmas Eve, 2013.

On December 24, 2013 at 3:45am, Cahill was one of three men who attacked Mr. Murphy outside a chinese restaurant on High Street in Tuam.

Murphy was out socialising with his partner that night after getting off work at midnight, they’d been at a nightclub earlier before going to get something to eat.

Garda Frank Fahy gave evidence to the court that inside the restaurant, Murphy and his partner were involved in a separate, unrelated disturbance with different man.

Garda Fahy said that Cahill was sneering at Mr. Murphy while this was happening, and after the other man left he got into an argument with the couple, during which Murphy’s partner attempted to punch him.

As Mr. Murphy and his partner were leaving the restaurant afterwards, they were attacked from behind and knocked to the ground by Cahill and two other men.

Garda Fahy said that witnesses saw Cahill kicking Mr. Murphy in the head, face, and body while he was on the ground, causing serious injuries.

As a result of the assault Mr. Murphy suffered fractures to his facial bones and eye socket which required corrective surgery, but still left him with permanent damage to his face.

Judge Rory McCabe said that this was an all too familiar situation, a case of “too much alcohol and too little control,” describing the attack as “nasty, cowardly and vicious.”

Mr. Murphy did not appear in court to give evidence, but in a written impact statement he said that he was unable to work regularly for almost two years after the attack because of medication he was taking for anxiety and depression he suffered afterwards.

Despite this Mr. Murphy said that he didn’t want to stop Cahill from living his life, a compassionate stance that both the defence and Judge McCabe paid tribute to.

A lawyer for the defence said that Cahill was highly remorseful about the assault and offered €10,000 in compensation to Mr. Murphy regardless of any sentencing, which was accepted by the victim.

Since 2013, the court heard, Cahill moved to London where he lived with his ling term partner prior to his arrest and was working as a chef while training to be a restaurant manager.

Garda Fahy confirmed to the court that Cahill has not come to the attention of the Gardaí or the Metropolitan Police in London since.

Cahill’s employer, restaurant owner Richard Corrigan, was in court to testify about Cahill’s character since he came to work for him.

He said that he has known many people who are aggressive and lack focus, but Cahill has become a valued part of his company.

While on bail here in Ireland Cahill has been working at Mr. Corrigan’s business in Cavan, Viriginia Park Lodge, and Mr. Corrigan told the court that Cahill’s job in London would be waiting for him after the case and any sentence he received.

Judge McCabe said that this assault was at the “top of the scale” for similar offences. The victim impact statement showed a stark effect on Mr. Murphy’s life, and in almost all other cases he would impose immediate incarceration.

However, the judge considered in mitigation Cahill’s earlier plea of guilty along with his apparent decision to turn his life around, and the compassion that Mr. Murphy expressed in his statement.

Judge McCabe said that in this case rehabilitation should be the court’s primary goal and imposed a four year suspended sentence.

Longford Town vs Galway United

Galway United will be looking to bounce back following their 1-0 defeat to Drogheda United in Eamonn Deacy Park last Friday (25th May) that saw them lose their unbeaten First Division home record. 

Longford Town move from their usual Saturday night slot due to the Republic of Ireland friendly against the USA in the Aviva Stadium.  Shane Keegan’s side will play three times in the space of seven days with games to come up against Cobh Ramblers on Monday (4th June) and Finn Harps next Friday (8th June).

When the sides on March 30th, it was a stalemate at Eamonn Deacy Park, both sides struggled to break the deadlock in a 0-0 draw.

“We were disappointed with the result against Drogheda last week,” said manager Shane Keegan to Galway United’s official website.  “There wasn’t many chances or much difference between the two sides, so it was frustrating to come out on the wrong side of that result.

“In our two previous defeats so far this season, we’ve bounced back with back-to-back victories, which shows that we’re a team that responds well and tends to bounce back.

“These are tough games. This is another six pointer for us. I think there’s a lot of pressure on Longford. They’re looking at it and there is currently a four-point gap between us and Longford.

Keegan is still without Alan Conway who remains absent due to a knee injury.  Danny Furlong (hamstring) and Tadhg Ryan (quad) both came off injured against Drogheda United and are rated as doubtful.

Longford Town come into this contest on the back of draws against Athlone Town and Shelbourne.  Before their loss to Drogheda, the Tribesmen had picked up wins against UCD and Cabinteely.

Award-winning restaurants bring food to the streets of Galway

Over 2,500 people casually dropped by the Street Feast last year which was the first year Galway’s award-winning restaurants in the Westend brought samples of their food to the streets of the City.

And this year’s festival, which started yesterday, will culminate on Bank Holiday Monday, when the Street Feast will be joined by live music and face painting – provided the weather doesn’t ruin the show!

The ERG Food Truck has been on Ravens Terrace since yesterday showcasing samples of food from well-known local business, and it has been attracting lots of interest from passers by and food-lovers.

The Street Feast allows you to sample a taste of each business including Kai Restaurant, Dela Restaurant, John Keoghs The Lockkeeper, An Tobar Nua, Rouge Restaurant, Gourmet Tartm Creole BBQ & Grill, Hooked on Henry Street, Crust Bucket, Tartare Cafe + Wine Bar, Massimo Bar,  Monroes and retailers including Avo Nice Day, McGuire’s Daybreak, Bell Book and Candle, Farraghers, Just Art It and Ernies of course.

Business, producers and local suppliers will be showcased through the ERG Food Truck at Galway Westend each day and people will get a chance to meet the producers and the chefs of Westend eateries and also sample some of their most well-known dishes.

Galway’s Westend have teamed up with Walsh Waste to make this a biodegradable and compostable festival, using eco packaging and take away materials.

Ravens Terrace will be closed off to traffic completely on June 4th and there will be live music and face painting. This is a family friendly day in the Westend that aims to encourage people to cross the bridge and enjoy all that is going on in this much-loved area of Galway.

“Each business will be offering a flavour of what they do. The area will be set up as a picnic area and we are inviting Galway to the Westend to enjoy all of our amazing food. Each business will have a stall set up selling food and refreshments, there will be live blue grass music and face painting will be happening for all the children,” explained Mags Bohan of Dela Restaurant and the Westend Traders association.

Being in Galway, this all comes with a weather warning!!!

The event is weather dependent – as long as its dry, it’s going ahead!

GALWAY GAA (Preview): WEXFORD vs GALWAY (Saturday, 5pm Innovate Wexford Park)

It’s not coming from Galway! Indeed, it’s coming from the confines of the geographical hurling patch in Leinster.  But Wexford may have to prove themselves again and book their place in a second consecutive Leinster Hurling Final. 

The Tribesmen beat Davy Fitzgerald’s charges 0-29 to 1-17 in that decider in July but they have already relinquished one of their 2017 trophies having lost to Wexford in the league quarter-final.

Innovate Wexford Park was the venue in March as Conor McDonald hit 1-2 and Rory O’Connor got a late score to beat the All-Ireland champions 1-23 to 0-23 despite Joe Canning and Conor Whelan sharing 15 points

Both teams have maximum points from two outings and the winners will be in the provincial final.  It was in Wexford Park that the Slaneysiders lit up last year’s championship beating Kilkenny but they won’t want to head to Nowlan Park needing a result the following weekend.

They dismantled a tired Offaly 5-24 to 2-9 after suffering a scare against Dublin.  But Fitzgerald will have heard talk, notably from former referee Brian Gavin on Midlands 103, who felt Wexford were behind Kilkenny and Galway and fancied Offaly for a result last Saturday (26th May).

With Mark Fanning in goal; Damien Reck, Liam Ryan and Paudie Foley in defence; Aidan Nolan and Sean Murphy around the middle; with Lee Chin partnered by the O’Connor brothers (Jack and Rory) up front, a trophy is Wexford’s summer target.

Of course, Galway manager Micheal Donoghue won’t be buying into any hype about his team or Wexford and the Tribesmen will be hell bent on getting the result that secures them Croke Park action on July 1st.

They’ve scored six goals in 2018 (three times as many as last year) and always looked in control in their 1-22 to 2-11 win over Kilkenny in Pearse Stadium.  Canning got 1-12 and Conor Cooney converted four points and they will go into this contest as 2/5 favourites.

James Skehill is holding the goalkeeping position; defenders Adrian Tuohey, Daithi Burke, Padraic Mannion and Geraroid McInerney were dominant against Kilkenny; David Burke and Johnny Coen are a solid midfield unit; while Canning, Conor Cooney, Whelan and Joseph Cooney will lead the attack.

Much has been made about the five round-robin rounds played on consecutive weeks and Wexford are heading into their third game in succession while Galway had a break between their Offaly and Kilkenny assignments.

This is a must-win game for both but it vital for Wexford!  A home game in front of their passionate support and a Leinster Final the prize.  They won’t want to need a result in that game.  Galway will want to keep their seven-game unbeaten championship run intact.  It promises to be a cracker!

GALWAY’S GREATEST CAMOGIE PLAYER – THE RESULT!

With perfect timing, Kinvara’s ‘Pocket Rocket’ successfully launched for overall glory as Galway Daily’s ‘Galway’s Greatest Camogie Player’ finished on Friday morning (1st June). 

Veronica Curtin, a 1996 All-Ireland winner and Galway’s scorer-in-chief for nearly two decades, came out first in the final poll between the top four participants getting 39% of the vote.

Curtin played her part in the Tribeswomen’s first All-Ireland title win and was a role model and leader for a future generation of players that repeated that feat 17 years later.

‘Ronnie,’ as her team mates knew her, just missed out on that second success but laid the platform perfectly after the turn of the millennium.  She scored 1-5 of Galway clinched the 2005 National League and in one of her greatest ever displays, struck two goals in the 2010 All-Ireland semi-final against Cork.

The two-time All-Star in 2006 and 2007 achieved Gael Linn success at junior and senior level.  And in 1994, not just did she win All-Ireland junior and minor championships with Galway, she was player of the match in both victories.

Previous poll topper Therese Maher came second with 32% of the vote ahead of Martina Harkin (15%) and Niamh Kilkenny (14%).

GALWAY LGFA: GALWAY’S GREATEST LADIES FOOTBALLER – THE RESULT!

She was the favourite and delivered in every round as the title of ‘Galway’s Greatest Ladies Footballer’ went to the 2004 All-Ireland wining captain after the competition finished on Friday morning (1st June). 

Annette Clarke‘s Galway senior career spanned 18 years with the highlights coming in 2002 and 2004.  She won the All-Ireland Junior Ladies Football Championship beating Donegal before captaining her county to the Brendan Martin Cup two years later.

The two-time All-Star has played a key role in Kilkerrin/Clonberne’s recent domination of the domestic scene and her impact on Galway Ladies Football was acknowledged in 2016 when she was the subject of an episode of TG4’s ‘Laochra Gael.’

Clarke’s involvement with Galway didn’t end upon her retirement after 2015.  She was a member of the Tribesgirls’ management that won the 2017 All-Ireland under 16 title.  And, along with her husband and team manager Kieran Collins, are part of the minor set-up that won the 2018 Connacht championship.

Niamh Fahey came second with 19% of the vote ahead of Caitriona Cormican (18%) and Edel Concannon (15%).  But Clarke’s 48% tally had her the firm favourite from early on.
