Inishbofin glamping site refused planning permission

Galway Daily news Glamping site on Inishbofin refused planning permission

Galway county council has refused a planning application for a glamping site in Inishbofin.

Glamping  is a form of ‘glamorous camping’ where campers stay in a cabin, pod or other shelter with a bed and other amenities.

The development at Knock, Inishbofin was planned to have 14 glamping pods, a reception area, and a toilet block.

The developers said that the high standard pods would allow guests a tourist experience that doesn’t separate them from nature.

Other works to be done on the site would have including installing a wastewater treatment system, and adding improved site access and car parking.

The council received 35 submissions regarding the development, which were largely opposed to it.

Issues that were outlined in the public submissions included the environmental impact it would have on local fauna.

Local residents also disputed the applications claim about the number of rooms for tourists there are on the islands, saying that when private rental properties and others are included there are over 400.

The county council refused permission for Bofin Glamping ltd on the grounds that the glamping site would impact multiple protected habitats on the island, which is a Special Area of Conservation.

Council planners also noted that the application said the waste treatment system would require regular desludging, something there is limited capacity for on Inisbofin, and that the site would have a detrimental impact on the visual landscape.

Supermac’s owner gets approval for motorway plaza on the M7

0
galway daily news Supermac's owner gets approval for M7 plaza in Portloaise

The owner of Supermac’s, Galway man Pat McDonagh, is continuing his run of motorway plazas with another on the M7 at Portlaoise.

Laois County Council have given McDonagh planning approval for a two storey retail building with a Supermac’s drive thru and a six pump forecourt.

The development, similar to the Barack Obama plaza in Moneygall, is part of a larger plan for Togher Enterprise Park at Junction 17 on the motorway.

According to the Irish Independent the council said the development was a unique opportunity to bring a cluster of related enterprises and grow Portlaoise’s economic base.

McDonagh’s plaza will include the second Supermac’s outlet serving the town of Portlaoise.

For his part, Pat McDonagh said that getting approval was a crucial step forward for the development.

The plaza is expected to create 60 jobs during the first phase of its construction.

When its operational, McDonagh estimates it will require between 80 and 100 full and part-time employees.

As of now, 2020 has been given as the completion date for the project, at an estimated cost of €10 million.

McDonagh also has another plaza on the Galway to Limerick motorway outside Ennis.

Applegreen’s owner Petrogas has been vocal in its opposition to the project, which they say will harm the town’s economy.

However, McDonagh says the project would create 100 full time jobs and 80 during construction.

Despite previously getting planning approval, the project was put on hold by Clare County Council when it emerged that dozens of letters of support submitted were forged.

Galway Daily life & style Galway International Arts Festival reveals winter lineup for First Thought Talks

Galway International Arts Festival has announced the winter programme for its First Thought Talks that premiered this summer.

The First Thought Talks were launched by GIAF as a strand of events at the festival this July.

President Michael D. Higgins opened the strand with a speech on the concept of ‘Home’ that sold out in no time at all.

After the festival, GIAF announced that the First Thought Talks would become a year round event.

The speakers for the first set of talks taking place at NUI Galway this month have been announced recently.

City of Thorns author Ben Rawlence, Irish Times columnist Fintan O’Toole, Madam Politician author Martina Fitzgerald, former politician Máire Geoghegan-Quinn and Labour Party politician Jan O Sullivan are among the high profile line-up for the new event.

Ben Rawlence spent four years living and working in the world’s largest refugee camp in Kenya, home to 350,000 people. Camp Dadaab was originally founded to hold just 90,000 fleeing civil war in 1992.

His book, City of Thorns: Nine Lives in the World’s Largest Refugee Camp tells the stories of the remarkable people he met there.

Ben’s talk, where he will be interviewed by photographer Sarah Hickson, will focus on the experience of refugees living under the conditions.

Fintan O’Toole will discuss the psychology and politics behind Brexit in his talk ‘A New and Frightening Home’.

His book Heroic Failure: Brexit and the Politics of Pain ruthlessly looks at how lies, apathy, and rise of nationalism set a country on this path.

For his talk he will be introduced by Catriona Crowe, Curator of GIAF First Thoughts Talks.

Alice Leahy is one of Ireland’s leading advocates for helping the homeless without judgement, with decades of experience of providing services through the Alice Leahy Trust.

In this talk title ‘Our Long Running Homelessness Crisis’ she will talk about her 40 years of working on homelessness and what she makes of our current crisis.

Joining Alice will be Donna O’Neill, a Services Manager with Cope Galway who has managed the Fairgreen Hostel for the past 15 years.

She will be adding to the discussion with her knowledge of local issues in Galway that contribute to the crisis.

Political Correspondent for RTÉ News & Current Affairs Martina Fitzgerald has plenty to say about sexism in politics and how women have to fight to be heard in the halls of power.

For this talk titled ‘A Home for Women in Government’, Martina will be joined by former Irish Fianna Fáil politician Máire Geoghegan-Quinn and Jan O’Sullivan, a Labour Party TD.

Both of them have served in multiple ministries over long political careers and have firsthand experience with these issues.

Galway International Arts Festival’s First Thought Talks will take place at NUIG’s Aula Maxima on November 30 and December 1.

Tickets for the talks will go on sale next Monday, November 12 for €10-15 at www.giaf.ie.

Rare shark nursery found off Galway coast

Scientists discover rare ‘shark nursery’ west of Ireland

Scientists from the Marine Institute made a rare find in an expedition 200 miles of the coast of Galway, a shark nursery.

The discovery was made by the Marine Institute’s remote operated vehicle, the ROV Holland I, during the recent ‘SeaRover’ survey exploring Ireland’s deep ocean coral.

Video taken at the site 750m below the surface showed a large number of egg case, commonly called mermaid purses.

There was an unusually large concentration of eggs found, indicating that female sharks might gather at this particular spot to lay their eggs.

There was also a large school of Blackmouth Catshark, common in the northeast Atlantic, present at the site as well as the more solitary Sailfin roughshark.

The Sailfin roughshark is listed as ‘Near Threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature meaning it may be considered threatened with extinction in the near future.

They can grow up to 1.2m long and are usually found moving slowly on deep water currents, feeding on small invertebrates.

It’s likely that the eggs were of the Blackmouth Catshark, and it’s possible that the Sailfin sharks were there to feed on them, though this was not observed.

The footage of the shark nursery was presented at the NFOMAR Seabed Mapping Seminar in Kinsale this week.

David O’Sullivan Chief Scientist on the SeaRover survey said: “No pups were obvious at the site and it is believed that the adult sharks might be utilising degraded coral reef and exposed carbonate rock on which to lay their eggs.”

According to Mr O’Sullivan, having a nearby coral reef would provide great shelter for juvenile sharks once they hatch.

“It is anticipated that further study of the site will answer some important scientific questions on the biology and ecology of deep water sharks in Irish waters,” explained David O’Sullivan.

The shark nursery was found withing one of Ireland’s six Special Areas of Conservation that host a wide range of sea fans, sponges, worms, starfish, crustaceans and fish species.

This latest discovery further highlights how important it is to protect the ocean habitats that host such a wide range of sea life.

“Our key objective is to assess, protect and monitor Ireland’s rich offshore marine biodiversity so we can begin to manage our marine resources effectively,” said Dr. Yvonne Leahy of the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

“Without knowledge of what lives in our seas we are at risk of never fully understanding and appreciating Ireland’s marine environment.”

The ‘SeaRover’ survey that found this shark nursery was the second of three ocean surveys backed by the Irish government and the EU.

‘Eastgate’ project to be a €120 million business district in Galway

Galway Daily news Planning permission granted for Salthill apartment blocks

Bothar na Mine, Ballybane to be the site of a new business district development

Plans are now afoot for a new €120 million business district on the east side of Galway city which will be created on a 10 acre site in Ballybane.

Known as ‘Eastgate’, the project will see the creation of hundreds of jobs in construction with the building of office blocks up to eight stories high.

The plans which were lodged recently with Galway City Council, will comprise of high spec office space for up to 3,000 workers that will be employed within public plazas and a 193-bed hotel.

Currently on this site that is earmarked for development stands the McDonagh Trade Centre.

Pat Neville, a Director of McDonagh Capital Investments said that  business there would not be affected until later phases, when the trade centre will move to a new location.

“Nothing like this exists in Galway” – Mr Neville said referring to the need to alleviate the chronic shortage ‘Grade A’ office space in the city.

He went on to say: “We are looking at attracting new entrants to the market in Galway, and there are very big companies that are interested in coming to the city. There are also businesses  that have three, four or five buildings who would like to consolidate.”

The property company, which is part of the Thomas McDonagh & Sons, applied to Galway City Council for planning permission for Phase 1 of the project which is valued at approximately €50m.

The location is seen is prime for such a development because of it’s proximity to the M6 motorway and the proposed Galway City Ring Road.

The ambitions are high and, in order to attract quality interests, Pat Neville sought to assure the business community by adding: “We are not speculators, we will only be building if we secure long term tenants”.

Galway West TD Eamon Ó Cuív demoted from Fianna Fáil frontbench

0
Galway daily news Eamon Ó Cuiv fired from Fianna Fail frontbench

Galway West TD Eamon Ó Cuív has been fired from the Fianna Fáil front bench for taking part in the launch of a candidate for the Northern Irish elections without the party’s approval.

Deputy Ó Cuív and Senator Mark Daly took part in an event last month launching Sorcha McAnespy as the first ever Fianna Fáil candidate for Northern Ireland.

But the party quickly stepped in to say that it had no part in this and wasn’t aware of the event.

Yesterday, Senator Daly and Deputy Ó Cuív were summoned to a meeting with Micheál Martin, where the Senator was sacked as the Fianna Fáil spokesperson for youth affairs.

There was no word on the fate of Eamon Ó Cuív at the time.

However the party has said that Mr Martin met with Deputy Ó Cuív last night and that he has been removed as the party’s spokesperson for rural affairs.

In a statement Fianna Fáil said “During the course of that meeting Deputy Ó Cuív made it clear that he was aware in advance of plans to hold an unauthorised launch of a candidate and agreed to participate in the event.”

“In light of this information, regretfully, Deputy Ó Cuív’s continued membership of the Party’s Front Bench is no longer tenable.”

Tweeting in Irish Eamon Ó Cuív said that he accepts that it is up to Mr Martin to choose his frontbenchers, and that he will not be making any further statements.

The Galway West TD’s portfolio on the party frontbench will reassigned in the time ahead, according to the statement.

During recent months Deputy Ó Cuív, who is Eamon de Valera’s grandson, has been seen to be in public contention with the party leadership.

There was much speculation among Fianna Fáil councillors that he should run as a presidential candidate, the the party was officially backing Michael D. Higgins.

Galway artist brightens up UHG with beautiful nature paintings

Galway daily life & style Galway artist brightens up UHG with beautiful landscapes

A new solo exhibition by Kinvara based artist Fiona Cawley is bringing nature inside University Hospital Galway this month with beautiful landscape pieces.

Born in Sligo but now living and working out of Galway, Fiona received her BA Art and Design Degree from the Centre for Creative Arts and Media, GMIT in 2015.

Fiona’s work has been selected for exhibitions such as Cairde Visual, Hambly and the Hambly House Gallery group show, and was invited to contribute to the Boyle Arts Festival in 2017 and 2018

Her latest exhibition ‘Gardenland’ explores that boundary where the controlled garden space meets the wild, natural landscape.

It comes from her own love of nature and the environment, and the landscape that surrounds her at work and home.

An expressive, spontaneous artist by nature, when starting out on a landscape or narrative piece Fiona lets the paint dictate how the work begins.

From there she evolves the abstract into a more representative piece of work.

GUH Arts Director Margaret Flannery said, “We are delighted to display ‘Gardenland’ by Fiona Cawley on the arts corridor of University Hospital Galway.”

“Already the reaction from patients, staff and the public has been overwhelmingly positive. Her work is thought-provoking and interesting and lends itself to the space beautifully.”

The ‘Gardenland’ exhibition will remain on display at UHG all through this month until November 29.

Other upcoming shows with Fiona’s work include a group show in the Custom House Gallery, Westport and a Solo Show in the Ballina Arts Centre.

This exhibition is being presented by the Galway university Hospitals Arts Trust.

The Arts Trust brings in outside work to improve the environment that patients live in to encourage their wellbeing.

It also gets patients engaged in creating art themselves to give the mind a positive focus.

HSE prepares for busy winter months

0
Galway daily weather Two weather warnings in place for Galway this morning

Detailed plans are expected from the HSE in mid-November on how additional funding is to be spent in addition to operational plans for each hospital group.

East Galway TD Ciaran Cannon said that while winter is a difficult period for the health service, significant work is underway by the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive to adequately prepare in advance.

The Minister said: “An additional €10 million has been allocated by the Department of Health to the HSE to prepare for winter and my colleague Minister for Health Simon Harris has just concluded meetings with each Hospital Group CEO and each Chief Officer from the 9 Community Healthcare Organisations across the health service.

“Detailed plans from the HSE are expected in mid-November on how the additional money is to be spent in addition to operational plans for each hospital group and primary and social care services to manage winter pressures.

“It is anticipated that this funding will focus on initiatives to enable the hospital system to de-escalate before Christmas.”

Report on abuse of three children in Galway foster home due shortly

0
Galway daily news Minister says report on abuse of three children at Galway foster home due next month

A report by an independent review into the abuse of three children at a foster home in Dunmore near Tuam is due by the end of the month.

Speaking in the Dáil, Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone said the report had been delayed by considerations Tusla had to make about the views of the people involved and the potential impact on their families.

The National Review Panel into the abuse of children handling this case was established in the aftermath of the clerical abuse scandals.

Minister Zappone said it had been expected that the report would be completed by the end of October, but she has now been advised it will be finalised by the end of this month.

Keith Burke was sentenced to seven and half years in prison for raping three girls who were in the foster care of his parents between 2003 and 2007 in April of this year.

The three girls were placed in the Burkes’ care by the HSE’s Galway Community Care.

Shorly after his sentencing hearing, when he first admitted to his crimes, the HSE gave an unreserved apology to the three women.

In an RTÉ Investigates on Prime Time, multiple women came forward to name him and talk publicly about their experiences.

Two women, identified only as ‘Sarah’ and ‘Amy’, not their real names, and Rachel Barry, who waived her right to anonymity, told RTÉ what Burke had done to them.

Minister Zappone was answering a question  posed by Galway West TD Catherine Connolly, who asked why the report was taking so long to complete.

“What horrifies me is that we are now in November 2018 and there is no sign of the report,” she said.

“I understand that all of the files were reviewed in April 2016, the terms of reference were set up in October 2017 and here we are in November this year and there has been no communication.”

Deputy Connolly also asked why there have been so few updates from this panel when the Mother and Baby Home and Charlton Tribunal both communicated regularly.

Minister Zappone said the she understood the frustration that everyone involved was experiencing.

“The abuse suffered by these very brave young women while in foster care in the early 2000s is shocking, and I am very sorry that their lives were so disrupted and deeply impacted by it.”

She said part of the delay was caused by the criminal investigation, which caused the panel to suspend its operations until its completion.

“My understanding is that it will be reporting at the end of this month,” she said.

But that the Minister said she had no more information as this was an independent panel that doesn’t involve her office.

Kylemore nuns take in record €1.375 million windfall

Galway Daily news Planning permission extended for new Kylemore Abbey monastery

The Benedictine nuns at Kylemore Abbey took in a record breaking €1.375 million windfall last year.

In 2014 the nuns took back over the running of Connemara’s major tourist attraction with their firm Kylemore Abbey and Gardens Ltd.

Accounts filed showed that Kylemore Trust, owned by the Benedictine sisters, charged €800,000 in rent to Kylemore Abbey and Gardens in 2017.

The nuns’ trust also received a charitable donation of €575,000 from the firm last year.

According to the Irish Independent, last year the firm showed modest pre-tax profits of €11,639 after payouts.

The total revenue taken in by the firm was €5.4 million, up by €200,000 on 2016.

The money received by Kylemore Trust will be reinvested into the Abbey and grounds to carry out critical conservation works.

The Abbey was founded in 1920 by Benedictine nuns fleeing the destruction of their home in Ypres, Belgium during WWI.

Tourism continues to play a major role in the success of Kylemore, as this beautiful Victorian property on the shore of Lough Pollacappul received 330,000 visitors last year.

A new visitor experience will open at Kylemore Abbey next St. Patrick’s Day with a new entrance to the Abbey and public rooms with a retelling of the Abbey’s story.

To cope with the ever growing tourist presence the Benedictine Nuns are building a new monastery on the grounds of the Abbey to provide them with privacy.

Galway’s Marine Institute leads voyage to map the ocean floor

0
Galway Daily news Galway to host major international Oceanographic Conference

The last great exploration of the true unknown on earth is underway, with the Marine Institute in Galway leading efforts to map the ocean floor.

To date, less that five percent of the ocean floor has been been mapped. since they cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface, we know more about the cartography of other worlds than our own planet.

To put that in perspective, twelve people have walked on the moon, but only three have ever gone to the deepest part of the ocean in the Mariana Trench’s Challenger Deep.

The Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance, led by researchers at the Marine Institute, is creating an Atlantic Ocean Map than aims to make our freezing pond the best understood ocean on earth.

Already, expeditions by the Celtic Explorer have discovered previously unknown underseas volcanoes and mountains on the ocean floor.

More complete deep sea mapping will fundamentally improve our understanding of how the oceans behave and help predict weather patterns and climate change trends, the organisation claims.

Beyond just mapping, the AORA-Coordination and Support Action aims to promote a healthier ocean, find more sustainable ways to use its resources, and increase people’s awareness and literacy surrounding the ocean.

The AORA-CSA is being led by the Marine Institute’s Dr. Margaret Rae (Director) and Dr. Peter Heffernan (Overall coordinator).
