Church burglary “an affront to society” judge says

0
Galway Daily news Man jailed for church burglary

A man has been jailed for a total of 16 months for burglary at a church in Salthill, as well as at an apartment the same night.

Shane Davis (27), with an address at Lowville, Ahascragh, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary at Galway District Court, as well as criminal damage and entering with the intent to commit an offence.

Galway District Court heard that on October 9 of last year, between midnight and 8am, Davis broke into Christ the King Church in Salthill and stole a quantity of cash.

That same day he committed another burglary at an apartment at Realt na Mara, Salthill where gardaí said he stole a number of items.

All of the items from the apartment and money from the church was found on Davis’ person when he was arrested by gardaí shortly afterwards.

“All burglaries are serious, but breaking into a church is an affront to society,” Judge Mary Fahy said.

Solicitor Valerie Corcoran said that Mr Davis was stealing to feed a heroin addiction which has “in effect destroyed his life” in recent years.

However she said that since going into custody last October he has been speaking with an addiction counsellor, and wants to get clean.

Davis also pleaded guilty to entering the curtilage of a building with the intent to commit an offence at a premises on the Upper Salthill road, as well as criminal damage for breaking a window at that property.

All of the injured parties in these incidents declined to come to court or give an impact statement gardaí said.

Judge Fahy imposed nine months in prison for the burglary at Christ the King church in Salthill, and seven months consecutive to that for the apartment burglary.

Two months each were handed down for the criminal damage and entering with intent, which will be served concurrently to the other sentences.

Recognisance was set at €1,800 in the event of an appeal, which includes an €800 surety by Davis, and an independent surety of €1,000.

COPE urges election candidates to commit to fairer society

0
Galway Daily news COPE

COPE Galway has written to all of the election candidates in Galway West and East, urging them to commit to commit to a fairer society for its most vulnerable individuals.

COPE has made a number of policy recommendations for the upcoming election which centre of tackling homelessness, responding to domestic abuse, and supporting older people.

“People across Galway and throughout the country have an opportunity to vote for candidates offering real and constructive solutions to the range of challenges we as a community and society face,” Martin O’Connor of COPE said.

“We ask that people use their vote wisely to help achieve a more equal and fairer society where everyone is valued and no one is left behind.”

COPE Galway works with and supports people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, women and children experiencing or who have experienced domestic abuse and older people who experience isolation and disadvantage in our community at a local level across Galway.

The key policy requests made by COPE to 2020 election candidates in their three main areas of concern are:

     Housing

  • A commitment to a constitutional referendum within the lifetime of the next government which would enshrine the right to housing for all.
  • The construction of new social housing to end the reliance on private rented accommodation for people who cannot afford their own home.
  • Protections for people in rented accommodation through the enforcement and extension of rent pressure zones.

Domestic Abuse

  • Ensuring that woman and children are not forced to live in dangerous situations due to not having anywhere to go.
  • Begin a process of ensuring that a least one place of refuge exists per 10,000 members of the population.

Older People

  • Increasing the availability of home care as an alternative to going into a nursing home on a statutory basis.

Ireland’s next general election will take place on Saturday, January 8, the first weekend election in over a century.

The full range of policy recommendations made by COPE can be seen at copegalway.ie/election2020.

Galway Wind Park took home a national industry award for its community scholarship fund that sends local kids to college.

The Wind Park took home the opening award of the night for Wind Energy in the Community for Ireland’s first ever wind-powered third level scholarship at the annual Irish Wind Industry Awards.

The scholarship, funded by Galway Wind Park, is set up to support students who live close to the wind park in their college education, and has benefited 40 students to date.

Galway Wind Park is Ireland’s largest onshore wind farm, producing 174MW of renewable energy, and is co-owned SSE Renewables and Greencoat Renewables.

Speaking after the awards, Barry Kilcline of SSE Renewables said “We’re delighted to be recognised as leaders in the wind energy community in Ireland and proud to be supporting students and the local community around Galway Wind Park.”

“We’ve always aimed to have a positive and lasting impact on the communities in which we operate, and it’s great to see Galway Wind Park not only make a difference to Ireland’s climate targets but also making a genuine difference in the local area. “

The Irish Wind Industry Awards are organised by the Irish Wind Energy Association to celebrate companies and individuals who display innovation and originality in the wind energy sector.

In 2019 Galway Wind Park won both Community Project of the Year and Project of the Year at the same awards.

This year’s awards took place at Clontarf Castle in Dublin on Friday, January 24, hosted by broadcaster Ivan Yates.

Yates said that by setting up a wind based scholarship, SSE and Greencoat are “encouraging the local community near the project to upskill themselves in areas of energy efficiency, sustainability, environmental, health, safety and social skills.”

Galway Wind Park became fully operational in October 2018 and is now generating enough renewable energy to power around 140,000 homes, while offsetting over 220,000 tonnes of harmful carbon emissions annually.

In addition to a multi-million-euro Community Fund, the wind park also includes the Galway Wind Way, 48km of onsite recreational walking and cycling trails.

Patrick Maguire Asset Manager with Greencoat Capital said that the aim of the Community Fund is to maximise the impact this project has on local people and communities.

“The Galway Wind Park Scholarship is designed to provide third-level education opportunities for local people to gain qualifications and ultimately build strong careers.”

“We are delighted that the IWEA Awards have highlighted this and we’re extremely proud to have won the Wind Energy in the Community Award.”

Menlo Park Hotel plans major renovations

0
Galway daily news Plans for city centre hotel development off Eyre Square

The Menlo Park Hotel in Terryland intends to get rid of its function rooms and replace them with more bed spaces in new renovation plans.

Planning permission is sought for major renovations to the hotel which will involve converting and extending the ground floor conference/function rooms to provide 12 new hotel rooms.

The newly renovated space will also include a gym and treatment therapy rooms. Other renovations included in the application involve demolishing the existing ground floor foyer to the southwest.

The existing bar and lounge area on the ground floor will be expanded, which will include building a new sheltered seating area outdoors.

Finally, four existing hotel rooms will have their overall floor area expanded.

The renovations, including the removal of the hotel’s function rooms, are being made due to “the significant impact on the operations of the business of the new road layout in the immediate vicinity”.

The planning application states that “the business sustainability financial models arising from this change indicate that the function rooms for weddings, conferences, meetings, etc. will no longer be sustainable and should be replaced by bed spaces.”

“We believe that the overall impact will result in a reduction in car space demand based on the Development Plan Matrix of spaces regarding uses.”

“The elevation changes are designed in keeping with the previous grant and recently constructed material changes.”

A decision on this planning application is due from Galway City Council by February 22.

Secondary school students in Galway did their part to keep the coast clean recently, clearing 46kg of garbage from a beach near Kinvara.

An Taisce’s Green Schools team brought students from four secondary schools to Traught Beach, Kinvara last week where they gathered eleven bags of marine litter.

Siobhan Sheil, Irish Water’s Green-Schools sponsorship manager said “This is a beautiful location and a wonderful amenity for locals and visitors alike, so it is vital that we all play our part in protecting it.”

“Events like this help raise awareness of the impact of marine litter and the importance of doing all we can to tackle it so that amenities like Traught Beach can continue to be enjoyed by all.”

Each year millions of tonnes of marine litter enter our seas and oceans, resulting in environmental, economic, health and aesthetic challenges.

Irish Water warns that people are continuing to flush large amounts of items such as wet wipes and cotton bud sticks which clog up sewers and eventually make their way to the ocean, where they pollute our beaches.

They can also cause severe damage to local wildlife and the marine environment.

The event was part of the Water Theme of the Green Schools programme, a free programme which has been in operation since 2015.

It asks secondary school students to become Green Schools Ambassadors, attending training events across the country as well as beach cleans and a support session.

Sixty-six secondary school students were selected as Green-Schools Water Ambassadors in 2018/19 to educate their peers about protecting the environment.

Cathy Baxter, Green-Schools Manager said that their programme this year includes many workshops, Walk for Water events, ambassador support sessions, a poster competition, and am award ceremony to choose the Eater Schools of the Year.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Irish Water once again and we would like to thank all of our Water Ambassadors for taking the lead in educating the wider community about the importance of water conservation.”

Galway family on 14 month sailing voyage lends a hand to the Marine Institute

Galway Daily news Family deploys argo float on sailing voyage

A Galway family taking a 14 month long sailing trip around the Atlantic Ocean took some time from their trip to deploy a new sensor float for the Marine Institute.

The Quinlan-Owens family, parents Vera and Peter, and their two children Lilian and Ruairi, deployed the Argo float while sailing from the Cape Verde Islands to French Guinea.

They set off from Galway last July aboard their yacht Danu, and their long trip around the Atlantic will finish up in New York next September.

Vera is a hydrographer for INFOMAR, the national seabed mapping programme, which is jointly managed by the Marine Institute and Geological Survey Ireland.

Argo floats are deployed in oceans all over the world to continuously monitor the ocean and gather data that will help predict oceanic conditions, interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere, as well as long-term climate trends.

They’re capable of gathering information on the temperature and salinity of the ocean up to 2,000m below the surface, important data for better understanding climate change and its effect on the ocean.

This data is transmitted via satellite every 10 days for the three to four years of the Argo Float’s lifespan and its location can be tracked at digitalocean.ie.

lan Berry, Ocean Science and Information Services at the Marine Institute said that they usually deploy Argo floats during research surveys in the North Atlantic.

“Vera’s sailing trip offered the opportunity for an Irish Argo float to be deployed much further south, near the equator,” Ian said.

“We thank Vera and her family for participating in the Argo Programme, and to Lilian and Ruairi for sharing this experience with their classmates so they can also learn about the importance of monitoring our oceans.”

Before heading off Lilian and Ruairi showed the Marine Institute’s Argo Float to their classmates at Kilcolgan Educate Together National School, where the primary school kids all signed their names to the float.

The Marine Institute has deployed 20 Argo floats in the Atlantic over the past decade, averaging three a year since 2015 as part of the Euro-Argo ERIC programme.

Worldwide the International Argo Programme maintains approximately 4,000 floats gathering data on ocean conditions.
