Warm & hearty Greek-inspired recipe perfect for cold Winter nights

0
galway daily food recipe mousska greece food

Inspired by Greek dishes like moussaka and pastitsio as well as recipes from other Mediterranean countries, this warm bowl of hearty and healthy food is guaranteed to receive five stars from the whole family.

So ditch the normal weekly menu for one night, and try this extremely easy-to-make dish bursting with the flavours of Greece… and Christmas!

Of course, there’s no strict recipe for this dish, so without going full Simon Harris, it is okay to substitute one or two ingredients. Just make sure the main ones are included: the minced lamb or beef, the spices, tomatoes, potatoes and cheese.

But you will need a few other things so here’s a full list of the ingredients.

What you’ll need (for three people)

400g minced beef or lamb

4 potatoes, 1 red pepper, 3 cloves of garlic, 1 large onion

Ground cinnamon, cloves, paprika, a bay leaf & oregano

1 tin of tomatoes & 1 chicken stock cube

Cheese: feta, parmesan & mozarella (or whatever cheese is in the fridge)

Olive oil & bread

What to do?

Add some oil to a frying pan (or cast iron pot). Dice the onion and garlic and fry for a few minutes in the pan before adding the diced peppers. Allow them to soften slightly before adding the mince.

Break the mince down well in the pan with a wooden spoon while it is browning. Add 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, one heaped tablespoon of paprika and the dried buds of around 15 cloves. Add a tablespoon of dried oregano and the bay leaf.

Add the tin of tomatoes and a mug of stock. Break down the chopped tomatoes so that it all becomes smoother. Add pepper and just a pinch of salt as the stock may be salty enough. You can add more later, but you can’t take away. Simmer for an hour or so.

Time for the potatoes. Cut them into 2 or 3 centimetre cubes and boil them until they are starting to soften but are still hard.

Drain them and allow them to cool. Once cooled slightly, fry them in olive oil and season with salt and paprika or pimentón. Four potatoes will probably need to be done in two batches, or with two pans.  When golden brown, remove the potatoes and allow to dry on paper towels to remove excess oil.

After simmering for over an hour, the tomatoes should have reduced and the mince mixture should be much drier. Taste for seasoning.

Simmer in the pot/ pan for over an hour to reduce the sauce until it is much drier

Crumble some feta and grate some parmesan into the pan (or any Italian hard cheese), and add some grated or chopped mozzarella (or any cheese that melts a bit better). Most cheeses in your fridge will work for this dish.

When the cheese has melted (the crumbly feta which won’t melt very well so worry not), remove the pan from the heat and tip in the bowl of crispy potato cubes. No oven is needed in this recipe!

Mix well so that everything is coated with the spiced ragù and melted cheese. Serve in a bowl and put some crispy bread on the table, and that’s it! καλή όρεξη – enjoy!

Revenue warns of possible hidden costs when shopping online

0

The Revenue Commissioners is warning people shopping online this season that if a price seems to low to be true, that may be because it is.

If you are shopping online and buying goods from outside of Ireland, it may be that the advertised price does not include tax and duty that will be applied once they arrive in the country.

Ms Maureen Dalton, Principal Officer in the Revenue Commissioners Customs Division, outlined that online shoppers need to be aware of potential additional charges before buying.

“Almost all goods arriving from non-EU countries will be liable to tax and duty,” she explained of shopping online from vendors around the world.

“If you shop online, you need to check whether the advertised price includes any tax and duty costs due before you make your decision to buy the goods concerned.”

Last year, Revenue officers in postal depots around the country applied charges to almost 100,000 parcels and packets, with the average duty and VAT charge per parcel coming to €68.66.

VAT applies if the cost of goods, including transport, insurance and handling, comes to more than €22, and Customs Duty also comes into play if the cost is above €150.

“For example, if you bought a mobile phone online from China, at an equivalent cost of €212, you would have to pay an additional €54.50 in Customs Duty, VAT, insurance and handling fees,” Maureen Dalton explains.

However, while most goods arriving from within the EU are exempt from Excise Duty and VAT, for alcohol and tobacco products are not.

“For example, the Excise Duty, VAT and handling fee on an average case of 12 bottles of sparkling wine, originating in another EU country, could add up to €119.27 to your purchase price.”

Ms Dalton concluded her advice to online shoppers by saying “Make sure you are clear on the actual or real cost of a product before you order it online. This will ensure you not faced with any additional unanticipated charges when you take delivery.”

Galway medtech startup Galenband will be one for investors to keep their eye on in the future after winning the “One to Watch” Award at Enterprise Ireland’s Big Ideas 2020.

NUI Galway spinout Galenband was one of 12 investor-ready start-up companies to pitch their new technology solutions to investors at Enterprise Ireland’s annual showcase of start-up innovation emerging from higher education institutes.

The “One to Watch” award was presented in a virtual ceremony to co-founder of Galenband Eddie McDaid for having the most outstanding pitch of the day.

McDaid said that he was thrilled to win the award along with his co-founders Oisín McGrath and Patrick Conway. A “Viewers’ Choice” Award was also presented to Galenband.

Galenband produces an unobtrusive wrist worn medtech device that monitors and records heart activity continuously for up to 90 days.

Galway TD calls for public release of all data behind decision to exit lockdown

0
Galway Daily news Disappointment that no occupational injury benefits coming for Long Covid sufferers

Galway TD Denis Naughten is calling for all of the data behind the decision to lift Level 5 lockdown restrictions to be made publicly available.

The country is moving back into Level 3 restrictions from next week after experiencing a further six weeks of lockdown on the heel of a sharp rise in case numbers in Autumn.

Making the information on how this decision was arrived at available to the public will help people to understand the decision Deputy Naughten said.

Over the course of this year, criticism has often been levied at the government that the decisions being made behind COVID-19 restrictions can appear arbitrary, and the decision making process itself has often appeared opaque.

On top of being a matter of public trust and understanding, Denis Naughten said that a look at the raw data will help us to see how the virus can be controlled in our communities, with a view towards avoiding fresh lockdowns in 2021.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said in recent days that a third, short lockdown may be necessary in the New Year, possibly in January of February.

“This data must also be used to reform the current five level restriction model, which is clearly not fit for purpose as we are now again looking at a level 3 plus.

“This is proof enough that these levels need to be completely revised with the aid of this information,” Denis Naughten said.

From next Tuesday, December 1 shops, hairdressers, and other retail businesses and services will be allowed to reopen, as will cultural venues such as museums, galleries, and cinemas.

Restaurants and pubs serving food will be allowed to reopen from December 4 can reopen for indoor dining with additional restrictions, while wet pubs will only be allowed to operate takeaway and delivery services.

However, no visitors to your home are permitted until December 18, except for those in your support bubble. Inter-county travel will also remain restricted up to that date.

“Over the last month I have been consistently reassured by An Taoiseach that Government is utilising all the contact tracing data collected from over 70,000 positive cases,” stated Denis Naughten.

“This information can be used to tell us who, where and how people are getting infected with Covid-19. This information and the data behind it, must now be put into the public domain.”

“Furthermore, we need to ensure that we now have a robust contact tracing system which can identify sources of infection quickly and have people and their close contacts isolated before this virus spreads to the community.”

Golf Ireland welcomes announcement courses can reopen from Tuesday

galway daily sport Golf Ireland welcomes announcement courses can reopen from Tuesday

The news that golf courses may reopen from next week has been welcomed by Golf Ireland, which has also issued strict protocols for health and safety.

CEO Mark Kennelly said: “The golf community is pleased that courses can reopen from Tuesday next. Golfers welcome the opportunity to resume play on a responsible and safe basis, as they did during the May to October period.”

“The governing bodies are issuing renewed guidance to our member clubs today and we strongly urge all golfers to continue to fully adhere to these protocols which are aimed at keeping golf and the wider community safe while the Covid-19 pandemic remains such a serious threat.

“We also ask golfers to fully comply with the wider public health restrictions, particularly the travel restrictions that will remain in place until 18th December.”

“Earlier this year, Irish golf demonstrated how our sport could be enjoyed by women and men of all ages in a safe and secure environment.

“As golf resumes, we hope that golfers enjoy their play but continue to be vigilant in adhering to the safety protocols”.

The following guidance has been issued by Golf Ireland to courses and players returning from next week:

  • Golf courses can reopen from Tuesday 1st December, however golfers must not travel outside their county of residence to play golf. This also means that golfers in counties either side of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland must adhere to the restrictions that apply in both jurisdictions. Further guidance for golfers and golf clubs is contained in the General Guidance document below.
  • From December 18th to January 6th, golfers can travel to another county to play as restrictions are eased over the Christmas period.
  • There should continue to be no organised social gatherings, of any size, at the facility. All golf activities should be organised on the basis of arrival-play-depart without delay. Shotgun starts are not compatible with this guidance as they create large gatherings.
  • All retail, including pro shops, can reopen while adhering to strict physical distancing and hygiene guidelines (please consult www.gov.ie for details).
  • Daily timesheets are restricted to a minimum of 8, 9 or 10 minute intervals. Clubs may only choose one interval for each day. If clubs choose 8+ minute intervals, play is restricted to 2 golfers per start time. If clubs choose 9+ minutes, up to 3 golfers may play per start time. If clubs choose 10+ minutes, up to 4 golfers may play per start time.
  • Tee times are booked in advance online or over the telephone. Clubs must ensure that players names (including members’ guests) are recorded on timesheets and timesheets must be kept for a period of at least 6 weeks to assist with contact tracing should the need arise.
  • All cafes and restaurants, including bars that serve food, can reopen from December 4th while following strict physical distancing and hygiene guidelines (please consult www.gov.ie for details). In the meantime, restaurants can continue to offer a takeaway service only.
  • Golf activities at club level may be resumed, including those which are acceptable for handicapping purposes where such conditions can be met under the World Handicapping System. All participants must abide by the domestic travel restrictions at Level 3 (see first two points above).

In addition, golf clubs and golfers are asked to ensure the following:

  • Members, visitors and staff with colds or any symptoms of COVID-19 must stay away from the golf course/clubhouse
  • Physical distancing rules are observed by all members and their guests at all times in the car park, clubhouse and on the course.
  • Personnel are on hand to monitor adherence with physical distancing rules and the rules for golfers set out in this document.
  • Those aged 70 years and over and the medically vulnerable should exercise judgement regarding the extent to which they engage with others and in activities outside home.
  • Training: Outdoors – non-contact training only in pods of up to 15. Indoors – individual training only.
  • Players are instructed not to touch the flag or flagstick.
  • Rakes are removed from the course. Players are requested to smooth bunkers using their feet or a club. (See Appendix 2 as previously published for measures which can be taken in qualifying situations)
  • Hire trolleys (electric and pull trolleys) must be sanitised prior to each use.
  • Caddies are not permitted (exception: where the group of golfers and the caddies are from the same household).

Plans progress for 3km riverside walking trail in Gort

0
Galway Daily news Gort wins two awards at 2022 Supervalu Tidy Towns

Plans are progressing for the creation of a beautiful new walking trail alongside the Gort River, with a planning application now before the county council.

The proposed River Walk will be approximately 3.2km in length, starting from Gort town centre, and following the east side of the Gort River as it flows north.

After roughly 1.5km, the trail will cross the rive over a pedestrian bridge, which is also to be constructed as part of this project, before looping back into town.

The return path will follow an old existing pathway through the abandoned village of Kinincha.

“The development of the walking trail will require construction work to formalise existing rough tracks, renovate historic paths, and to instate new walking track routes designed to link specific vantage points.”

“Construction work is also required to install the proposed clear span footbridge, gates, signs, and safety equipment,” the planning application states.

The owners of the land along the river which would make up part of the walk have given their consent, subject to the conditions of a Memorandum of Understanding.

This states that the people who use this walk do so due to the kindness of the landowner, and “no matter how often they enter, or in what numbers, they do not do so as of right”.

The cost of the maintenance of the trail will fall on the Gort River Walk Development Group, which is making this application.

The new walking trail is meant to encourage fitness and give people a way to appreciate the local nature, as well as encourage conservation of the local environment and biodiversity, and discourage illegal dumping.

A Natura Impact Statement, Ecological Impact Assessment, and Flood Risk Assessment have been prepared and submitted as part of this application.

Galway County Council is due to make a decision on this planning application by January 2 of next year.

Sinn Féin’s support has surged by 3 points to 30% in the latest Red C/ Sunday Business Post poll published today, which is the highest level of support the party has received since Red C began polling 17 years ago.

Fine Gael remains the most popular party in the country at 33%, but has dropped four points since the last Red C poll published on 24 October.

The Sunday Business Post poll has Fine Gael’s government partners Fianna Fáil at 12%, up by one point, and the Green Party has lost support and is now sitting on 5% (-1).

While Sinn Féin will be pleased with the poll results, it also makes for good reading for some of the other parties – Social Democrats have increased their support to 4% (+1) while Solidarity – People Before Profit are now at 3% (+1).

There was no change for the Labour Party (3%) or Aontú (2%) and Independents and others still have 8%.

Build works underway for National Broadband Plan rollout in Galway

0
Galway Daily news Work underway to deliver fibre broadband for 2,500 homes in East Galway

Build works for the National Broadband Plan are underway in multiple towns across Galway to bring them high-speed fibre internet.

Surveying has been completed on approximately 3,500 premises in Galway, and network designs have also been completed for the new Fibre to the Home (FTTH) network.

National Broadband Ireland (NBI) have said that this month their crews have started initial works in two main areas around the city and in the east of the county.

These works include erecting poles, unblocking ducts, and the insertion of sub duct into existing ducts, to prepare for the fibre to be installed in the next stage,

In the area around Galway City crews are working at Oranmore, Clarinbrige, Claregalway, Furbo and Barna.

In the east of the county works are underway in areas around Ballinasloe such as Kiltomer, Oatfield, Annagh, Kilconnell, and Ahascragh.

Galway East TD Seán Canney welcomed the news, saying that COVID-19 has shown just how essential it is to bring broadband to rural areas.

“The requirement for Broadband has been seen during the lockdown,” Canney said, saying that investing in this contract was the correct decision by the government.

“We now have to drive on with the installation in order to reach the houses that Eir failed to connect. We need equal opportunity for all our citizens and the National Broadband Contract will help achieve this.”

There are a total of 38,714 premises in Galway which are slated to receive 500mb fibre broadband under the NBP, representing an investment of €153 million in the county.

There are over 100 people employed in the initial works taking place now, and the networks are expected to go live in those areas in early 2021 NBI has said.

“Our mission is to end the digital divide across the country, and high speed broadband access has never been more critical in how we live our lives,” said CEO Peter Hendrick.

“Digital connectivity is critical to many of our activities right now, and this new Fibre-to-the-Home network, will be a key enabler for the sustainment of local businesses and communities.”

Pilot scheme pedestrianising westside streets from Monday for school trips

Several streets in the westside of Galway City will be pedestrianised during school opening and closing times from next week as part of a pilot project.

Starting from Monday, November 30 Palmyra Row, Palmyra Avenue and Raleigh Row will be pedestrianised between 8:15am and 9:15am, as well as 1:15pm to 2:45pm.

This is part of a ‘School Streets’ pilot project that the city council is carrying out in partnership with Scoil Iognáid to make the streets safer for school children.

Residents will still have access to their homes during these times, as will ‘blue badge’ holders or cyclists accessing the school.

“The street isn’t physically wide enough for cars to interact safely with the volume of vulnerable road users coming to our school by bike, or on foot,” a leaflet for the pilot scheme states.

“Children coming to school on foot/ by bike, and children with mobility issues experience significant difficulty accessing the school, with cars blocking their safe access.”

The road closures will only apply during school term times when students are coming and going.

This project is funded by the National Transport Authority, and delivered with the support of the Green-Schools Travel programme.
