Replacement of aging Monivea watermains underway

Galway Daily news Water main replacement

Work is due to be completed by the end of this month on replacing several hundred metres of aging water mains in the Monivea area of Galway City.

Irish Water is decommissioning 219 meters, and replacing approximately 191 metres of problematic, old watermains on Monivea Road in Galway City.

The old leaky mains are being replaced with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes to prevent more leakage issues.

The decommissioning and replacement works, which are to begin this week, are due to be completed by the end of March.

Commenting on the project Gerry O’Donnell, Irish Water said “To facilitate the safe delivery of the works, there will be some traffic management in place.

“The community have been notified of this in advance and local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.”

“The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water shut offs.”

“We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.”

The works are being carried out by Farran Construction Ltd on behalf of Irish Water.

Messages of Hope – Galway-based artist launches community-focused art project!

Galway-based artist Dee Deegan has launched a community-focused art project to promote creativity and positivity during lockdown.

The project, entitled ‘Messages of Hope’, is aimed at children aged 7yrs+ but adults are also encouraged to take part.

Participants can choose between three postcard templates – HOPE, LOVE or HUGS – to design using the Zentangle method.

A Zentangle design is a miniature abstract work of art created by a collection of patterns, according to Kinder Art.

Each participant’s design will then be printed onto 10 postcards by Jaycee Printers of Abbeygate Street, who have partnered with Dee on this project.

One postcard will be kept as a record of the project with an aim to exhibit them all once restrictions are lifted.

The remaining nine postcards will be sent onto the person who designed them, four of which will be prefilled with the addresses of nursing homes across Galway and its surrounding counties.

These can be sent free of charge using the Freepost service currently provided by An Post to all nursing homes across the country.

Due to the cost implications involved with printing and distributing the postcards, Dee had established a GoFundMe page for the project which has already surpassed its target of
€600.

All surplus funding is being donated to the non-profit counselling organisation Let’s Get Talking.

“I chose to give the unused funds to Let’s Get Talking because, with Covid, mental health issues have come to the forefront,” Dee explained.

“They’ve come to the forefront for people who’ve never had these issues before and it has put a lot of pressure on mental health services.

“I’ve had mental health issues myself. I know what it’s like to be there and I know what it’s like to feel that there isn’t any hope, which is where the project is coming from.”

As owner of Galway Art Academy, Dee has taught art to children for many years; and the students that she currently teaches via Zoom are equally invested in the project.

“They’ve been really involved in it, and I’ve gotten messages from parents saying that they’re bursting with excitement,” said Dee.

“It opens up the children’s eyes to it [mental health] and I’m opening up conversation and encouraging people to talk about their mental health.”

The median age of those who died in today’s figures was 81 years of age.

As of this morning there were 460 people hospitalised with COVID-19 in Ireland, of whom 107 were in the ICU.

“We have been made aware of four preliminary reports of stillbirths potentially associated with a condition called COVID Placentitis,” said Dr Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer. “These reports should be interpreted with caution as the coroners have not yet concluded their findings.”

“The HSE’s National Women and Infants Programme is aware of and is monitoring the situation and has issued a related notice to obstetric departments. I would ask that the privacy of all of those affected by this disease continue to be respected at all times.”

Dr Breda Smyth, Director of Public Health, HSE West said: “We have confirmed that more than 200 households have had an outbreak of COVID-19 that are linked back to the outbreak among students.

“We know that the new variant is more transmissible, and, based on the latest data, approximately a third of household contacts of confirmed cases in Ireland are now testing positive.

“If you display any symptoms of COVID-19, you must immediately self-isolate in your room and phone your GP.”

There have now been a total of 4,396 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland, and 221,649 confirmed cases of the disease in the country.

COPE Galway marking International Women’s Day with a call for solidarity.

Galway Daily news COPE Galway's Modh Eile wins national community housing award

With next Monday marking International Women’s Day, COPE Galway Domestic Abuse Service at Modh Eile House has called on women to stand by and support one another.

This is a call for solidarity from the Galway charity, to be there for the one in five women in Ireland who find themselves in an abusive relationship.

COPE Galway Domestic Abuse Service is a woman’s service. The professional, caring women who work there surround each woman who uses the service with support and belief.

Over 20,000 women have used the service since its inception, with many remaining involved in its work. Together, these women have shaped the service to become what it is today: a place of sanctuary.

Dr Carol Baumann, Head of COPE Galway’s Domestic Abuse Service, speaks of marking International Women’s Day at Modh Eile House.

“Women are so often defined in terms of their relations to others – daughter, mother, wife, sister, aunt – yet the term “woman” is the term that belongs to her, not one that defines the roles she plays for other people.”

“International Women’s Day is the day we take notice of each woman, celebrating her own value. It’s also an opportunity for all in our communities to acknowledge the many remarkable women in our lives – to accept her, support her, believe her, believe in her.”

This year marks four decades of the COPE Galway Domestic Abuse Service, a journey which began with recognising the need to provide a safe space for women in unsafe situations, with nowhere else to go.

The initial refuge in Galway, set up in response to this need in 1981, has since evolved into the professional, expanded service it is today, one that works with the women of Galway to make the community a safer place for all.

Long based at Waterside House, last year saw COPE Galway domestic abuse service move to a larger new home. The Modh Eile shelter is located at the former Magdalene Convent on Forster Street.

This building was donated to COPE by the Sisters of Mercy who used to run the Galway city Magdalene Laundry.

COPE Galway is inviting the public to hold a virtual tea party during the week of International Women’s Day – an opportunity to support and listen to the women in your life, while raising awareness and funds for COPE Galway’s domestic abuse service.

“Tea is an essential ingredient to the many stories told in our women’s room at Modh Eile House, where we invite women to meet with others and with our staff,” Dr Baumann said.

“It’s a safe space for women to just be themselves in a relaxed atmosphere. No woman is judged – she is accepted, respected and supported.”

Visit copegalway.ie/teaparty for further information.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse or is affected by any of the issues mentioned above phone COPE Galway Domestic Abuse free and confidential service at 091 56 59 85.

Connacht squad named for pivotal PRO14 match with Munster

Galway Daily sport Connacht squad named for pivotal PRO14 match with Munster

Connacht have named their side for the crucial Guinness PRO14 match against Munster this Friday, with three members of the Ireland squad once again brought to the starting lineup.

Bundee Aki is retained at centre following his release from Ireland duty last weekend, while Dave Heffernan and Ultan Dillane both start at hooker and second row respectively.

This will be a crucial match for Connacht and Munster, as both sides are vying for the top spot in Conference B of the PRO14, with Munster currently holding a substantial nine point lead.

Connacht don’t have the strongest recent record against Munster, having lost their last six matches against the southern province.

But after a slow start to the year, Connacht have managed to come out on top in their last five away games. These two conflicting things will no doubt be at the front of many minds in Limerick on Friday evening.

Head Coach Andy Friend said that the importance of this Friday’s match is not lost on the squad, and that everyone knows exactly what they need to do on Friday.

“There has been barely any talk of securing Champions Cup qualification because our first objective has always been 1st place in the Conference B, so all our focus since last weekend has been on getting a win that gives us that fighting chance of a final spot.”

“Thankfully we haven’t picked up any major injury worries in our last two games so we’ve a pretty healthy squad apart from our long-term absentees.

“We’ve named a very experienced starting XV but we’ve made sure to also reward those who showed good form in our last few games. Overall we’re in a positive place and we’re really looking forward to the challenge.”

Ahead of the game all Connacht players and management returned negative results in the latest round of PCR testing.

The three appeared recently before Galway District Court, where it was heard that a book of evidence had been served on them.

Dramatic 90% success rate at first virtual auction of 2021

0
Galway Daily property Dramatic 90% success rate at first virtual auction of 2021

The first auction of 2021 for Galway based O’Donnellan & Joyce Auctioneers was a promising start to the year, with 90 percent of properties sold as they continued uninterrupted the remote format adopted last year.

On Friday, renowned auctioneer Colm O’Donnellan welcomed bidders from all corners of Ireland who were tuning in via phone or computer for the live streamed auction.

With over 38 years in the business, O’Donnellan & Joyce have been through the good times and the bad in the Irish property market, and have adapted to them all.

Adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic required incredible changes, utilising technology to enable full-remote, live streamed auctions that have kept bidders in the loop moment by moment, even when they can’t be in the room.

In the first of the 2021 nationwide property auctions which took place last Friday, eight of the nine properties going under the hammer in Galway, Roscommon, and Leitrim were sold on the day.

O’Donnellan & Joyce managed to build strong interest among customers well before the auction, using video tours to let prospective homeowners get a look at what they would be bidding on from their own homes.

There were over 100 bidders who pre-registered for the auction, showing the team at O’Donnellan & Joyce that there is still strong activity in the property market, even as the lockdown drags on.

The first lot in Galway up for grabs was a house at 4 Walsh’s Terrace in Woodquay, which attracted attention not just from bidders around Ireland, but the UK and United States.

Though it needs renovation to bring it up to standard, the prime location and large back garden in a city centre house couldn’t have hurt, as bidding shot past the guide price of €290,000, with the house finally selling for €454,000.

Colm O’Donnellan added “the willingness of the market to pay such a price for a property in this state is a sign that there is money available and people are willing to buy.”

He also said that couples are increasingly looking for properties like this, where they can put their own stamp on the home.

Other properties that proved attractive to bidders included No. 18 Sylvan Drive, a four-bedroom detached house in Newcastle that would make an excellent family home.

It’s spacious nature, off-street parking, private rear garden, and the close proximity of green spaces certainly ticked all the right boxes in enquiries made before the auction.

The hammer ultimately came down at €389,000 for an overseas buyer, after fast and intense bidding that took the house well over the guide of €330,000.

People are increasingly interested in moving out of towns and cities in the past year, and a large six-bedroom house in Moycullen overlooking Lough Corrib proved the perfect blend of picturesque countryside that’s not too isolated.

This house ended going for €355,000 on a guide price of €310,000 after getting a lot of attention from locals and ex-pats hoping to return home to Ireland later this year.

Auction Co-ordinator said there are still many people who are looking for properties in the Moycullen and Oughterard area.

“We have a number of bidders from this auction and previous auctions who have a preference for homes in the Moycullen and Oughterard area and they are actively looking to complete purchases.”

“If you have a property that you are thinking of selling, O’Donnellan & Joyce are offering free thinking of selling valuations. Just call 091 564 212”.

Achieving a 90% success rate in their first auction of the season, Marketing Executive Aaron O’Reilly commented that “We are looking forward to a busy year of property sales and excellent results.

“Of course we would like to get back to face-to-face viewings and live auctions but with the introduction of virtual viewings and live stream auctions, we have been able to reach an even greater audience through the use of technology.”

“We look forward to delivering on our promise to sellers of achieving the best possible sale price for them”.

O’Donnellan & Joyce’s next property auction is on Friday 16th April. The company are offering a free ‘Thinking of Selling’ valuation to anybody that is considering selling a property.

To avail of the offer, all you have to do is simply call or email the auction team and a member of staff will arrange to carry out a valuation of your property. The team can be contacted on 091 564 212 or by emailing info@odj.ie.

COVID-19: Mass vaccination of healthcare workers underway at Galway racecourse

0
Galway Daily news COVID-19: Mass vaccination of healthcare workers underway at Galway racecourse

The mass vaccination of healthcare workers is up and running at the racecourse in Ballybrit, with 2,200 expected to receive the vaccine by day’s end yesterday.

Healthcare staff from Galway University Hospitals, Community Healthcare West and staff from agencies funded by the HSE are now being provided with their COVID-19 vaccine at the racecourse.

This programme to vaccinate healthcare workers will continue in the coming weeks, giving time to identify and fix any issues that arise before the vaccination programme is expanded to the wider public in the weeks and months ahead.

Jean Kelly, who has operational responsibility for the Vaccination Centre at Ballybrit said on Tesday, “We began vaccinating here in the racecourse last Thursday and by this evening we expect to have vaccinated 2,200 healthcare staff.”

“We had been carrying out healthcare worker vaccinations on site in University Hospital Galway but we moved that centre to the racecourse on Thursday last.

“We will continue to administer first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to healthcare staff including hospital staff, community staff and other healthcare workers.”

“As of this week, across the Saolta Group, we are in the process of developing Vaccination Centres which will ultimately be used to deliver the vaccination programme to the wider public.”

The vaccination work here is currently being undertaken by staff from Galway University Hospitals, Portiuncula University Hospital and Community Healthcare West, with more staff being recruited to bring it to the wider public.

The Defence Forces have also been assisting in the set up of the vaccination centre.

Breda Crehan Roche, Chief Officer of Community Healthcare West said that they are currently finishing up giving the vaccine to residents of long-term residential care facilities.

“I want to acknowledge the commitment of all the teams who worked so hard often 12 hours a day, over seven days a week, to ensure that vulnerable older people are protected.”

“While the ongoing vaccination roll-out is really positive, COVID-19 continues to be transmitted in our community and we all need to stick to the public health guidelines.”

Tony Canavan, CEO of the Saolta Group added, “This will be the single largest vaccination programme ever undertaken in the Irish State and it will require huge co-operation across the health services, and across a range of state agencies.”

“To date we have been somewhat limited by the availability of vaccine. We expect that to change over the coming weeks. We currently have access to three different vaccines and expect others to come on stream.”

“We are also conscious of the needs of people living in more remote locations including offshore islands and the more peripheral parts of our region and I want to assure the community that we will be flexible to make sure that everyone can get this vaccine as quickly and as efficiently as possible.”

Bank of Ireland closures creates opportunity for An Post and Credit Unions – Kyne

Galway Daily news Galway Senator condemns "rotten, corrupt" saga at Inland Fisheries Ireland

The closure of a large number of Bank of Ireland branches announced this week is an opportunity for An Post and Credit Unions to expand the services they offer in the community Galway Senator Seán Kyne has said

Speaking in the Senate on Monday, Seán Kyne said that while it is regrettable that this is happening, he welcomes that there are no forced redundancies expected.

Because of this move by Bank of Ireland, combined with Ulster Bank’s recent decision to leave the Irish market, Credit Unions and An Post should be encouraged and equipped to go beyond offering basic financial services.

Bank of Ireland announced plans to close 103 branches across all of Ireland, including in Ballygar, Dunmore, and Oughterard in Galway.

In making this announcement Bank of Ireland said that it would put an arrangement in place with An Post so people could use their local post office for personal banking.

“The retreat of traditional banks is an opportunity for trusted organisations like An Post and credit unions to provide day-to-day financial products and services,” Seán Kyne said.

“They are in so many of our communities and they have been reaching out and helping households that banks have not. I refer, for example, to the micro loan scheme which is why, thankfully, we do not see a massive growth in pay day lenders.”

“An Post is already showing innovation and flexibility via its green hub initiative. It is not only helping people access finance for home retrofit and energy upgrades but supporting householders with various grant schemes.”

Senator Kyne added that people like Credit Unions as they support local charities and any profits are shared in the community.

He said that the need for banking services will not disappear with the banks, and that An Post could fill those gaps with their local network and knowledge of communities.

In late 2019 the Central Bank relaxed restrictions on the level of long term lending, such as mortgages and business loans, that Credit Unions could engage in.

Galway Daily news 25 percent drop in COVID cases in Galway hospitals

There have been 14 additional deaths related to COVID-19 reported by the Department of Health today, as well as 359 new cases.

Of the deaths notified today, three were in March, 10 happened in February, and one occurred last November.

There have been 21 new cases reported in Galway today. The 14 day incidence rate in Galway has now fallen to 236.8 per 100,000, and there have been 611 new cases here in the past two weeks.

As of 8am this morning there were 498 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised in Ireland, of whom 116 are in ICU.

There have now been a total of 4,333 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland, and 220,630 confirmed cases of the disease.

Validation of data at the HPSC has resulted in the denotification of 2 confirmed cases, which is reflected in the national total.

“While the low number of cases reported today may be attributable to a weekend effect, it is nevertheless very welcome and represents the lowest number of cases reported on a single day since mid-December,” said Dr Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer.

“While we continue to make good progress in Ireland, globally in the past week, the number of cases of COVID-19 has increased for the first time in 7 weeks.”

“We must not allow this virus the opportunity to do the same here. Please hold firm to the public health advice and together we can continue to protect and build on the progress we have made over the last 2 months.”

As of last Saturday, there have been 435,895 doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in Ireland, with 141,345 people receiving both doses.
