The Maguire family

Three brave Galwegians are preparing to skydive from 13,000 feet in a fantastic fundraising campaign for a local special school.

Gail and Peter Maguire, along with their 16-year-old son Daniel, will take on the daring challenge in October to raise funds for St Joseph’s Special School in Galway City.

Their fundraiser has already raised over €1,300 in the first week, and their goal is to raise a total of €5,000 before they take to the air in less than two months’ time.

St Joseph’s Special School, under the patronage of voluntary organisation Ability West, provides a safe environment for kids with a moderate general learning disability to learn and grow academically, physically, socially and emotionally.

Gail, whose daughter attends St Joseph’s, describes the school’s teachers and staff as an “incredible bunch of dedicated, compassionate, patient and caring people”.

“They have created a very child-centred environment designed to accommodate individual learning so that all the pupils may experience success,” she says.

The Maguires will skydive through the Irish Parachute club on 24 October and Gail says that it will be a huge challenge for her.

“This will push me totally out of my comfort zone as I am terrified of heights – and I mean terrified!” Gail says.

“Some of these kids spend much of their time living outside their comfort zone just to fit in to what society deems acceptable.

“So, just to step out of my comfort zone for this short time is in recognition and admiration for all these children for everything they do and achieve in their lives.”

Féile na bhFlaitheartach 2020 moves online due to new Covid restrictions

0
galway daily Breandán Ó hÉithir

The Liam & Tom O’Flaherty Society has had to move its annual summer Inis Mór festival entirely online due to new Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings.

Féile na bhFlaitheartach 2020 will focus on life and writings of the author and journalist Breandán Ó hÉithir, nephew of the famous O’Flaherty brothers.

And as always, the Féile will be a bilingual affair, although some of the online events will be in Irish.

Breandán was born on Inis Mór 90 years ago and it is 30 years since he passed away. To this day, he is well remembered for his witty and perceptive prose both in Irish and English and his journalistic work for the Irish Times and RTÉ.

But the man’s insight into the Irish establishment is exemplified by his satirical ballad ‘The Gentle Black and Tan’.

Anyone who has read Breandán’s superb ‘The Begrudger’s Guide’ would have certainly thought of that lyrical masterpiece when Fine Gael announced its intention to commemorate the Black and Tans.

Ó hÉithir will be honoured in a number of the festival’s bilingual events. On Sunday, 30 August, at 7 pm, the Society will be screening the annual keynote lecture, dedicated to Breandán’s memory, available to all on the Society’s Facebook page.

This presentation is by the former RTÉ journalist, and his close friend, Póilín Ní Chiarán. It will include footage from the RTÉ archives and promises a unique insight into Ó hÉithir’s life.

One week later, on Sunday, 6 September, three further events will go online. One of these, associated with island haunts of Ó hÉithir, is Seosamh Ó Cuaig’s introduction with readings from his writings and O’Flaherty’s ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Ireland’.

And returning to the murderous nature of the Black and Tans, the Féile committee believe it important to commemorate the life of another Aran Islander, Laurence McDonagh, who was brutally killed by the Tans on Inis Mór in 1920.

Respects will be paid to Laurence McDonagh literally at the scene of crime, which is marked by a plaque. There will be a short talk followed by some traditional music and a rendering of Breandán Ó hÉithir’s ‘The Gentle Black and Tan’.

Féile na bhFlaitheartach would be incomplete without some special focus on the work of Liam O’Flaherty. As a third event, Éamon Ó Ciosáin will launch a unique publication: Mícheál Ó Conghaile’s translation into Irish of thirty of Liam’s English short stories, with a reading by the well known poet translator.

Another translation into Irish is Máirín Mhic Lochlainn’s rendering of Breandán Ó hEithir’s radio adaptation of Jaroslav Hašek’s famous anti-war satire,“The Good Soldier Švejk” (An Deá Shaighdiúr Švejk). This will go public later in the autumn.

Máirín has already dramatised several of Liam O’Flaherty’s texts as Gaeilge for past féilte, thereby making a unique contribution to the store of Irish drama.

More time given to convert vacant garage to restaurant in the Claddagh

0
Galway Daily news More time given to convert vacant garage to restaurant in the Claddagh

Galway City Council has granted more time for the conversion of a derelict garage and filling station in the Claddagh to a restaurant.

Planning permission was first granted in December of 2015 to convert the vacant Corrib Service Station on Fairhill Road Lower to a restaurant.

An Extension of Duration was sought by owner P.J. Canny sought an Extension of Duration to that permission June of this year.

In the application it was stated that work had not yet commenced on the project due to the economic downturn.

Galway City Council granted the EOD application unconditionally, saying that it was “satisfied that such additional period is requisite to enable the development to which the permission relates to be completed”.

Planning permission for the conversion of the vacant garage will now last until December 13, 2025.

The plans call for a change of use of the existing garage/service station to a sit down restaurant, alterations to road facing fenestration, and the addition of six velux windows.

The project will also involve the construction of a new first floor on the building to offices, storage space, and staff rooms.

The filling station as it is has been derelict for more than a decade, and the original application states that it would be “in the interest of urban regeneration” to allow its conversion to a restaurant.

“The existing garage, in its present condition, is the only undeveloped site on the Raven/Griffin/Fairhill triangle, whilst also holding the most prominent position on the triangle due to its dual exposure to both Fairhill Road Lower and Father Griffin Road”.

“The proposed development will give the derelict site a new vibrant use, with an attractive facade treatment which will complement the existing urban fabric of the urban island.”

“The proposed development will also maintain and build on the critical mass of the city to strengthen economic growth and competitiveness as outlined in the CDP.”

It covers all of Connacht, along with counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Wexford, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

Amazon announces plans for 115MW wind farm in Galway

0
Galway Daily news Plans in the works for northwest Galway wind farm

Amazon has announced it intends to build a 27 turbine wind farm in Galway to help power its data centres in Ireland.

The 115 Megawatt wind farm wind will be located in Ardderroo, Connemara, the Irish Times reports this morning, and is expected to become operational in 2022.

The project will add 229MW of wind energy to the Irish grid each year, to support Amazon Web Services data centres in the country.

It is the latest in a string of renewable energy projects undertaken by the company in Ireland, including a wind farm in Ersk, Co. Cork, which is soon to come online, and another in Meenborg, Co. Donegal, which has yet to be built.

The massive electricity usage of large scale data centres, and the strain they could put on the existing grid, have been one of the largest concerns people have raised over the advancement of such projects, in Ireland and elsewhere.

This latest project will generate the equivalent of 185,000 homes’ energy usage, and cut carbon emissions by 366,000 tonnes each year.

Galway City awarded €3 million for pedestrian and cycling projects

Galway Daily news Oranmore active travel

Galway City Council has been allocated €3 million for 21 pedestrian and cycling infrastructure projects across the city.

The funding for Galway City is part of a €55 million allocation by the National Transport Authority to local councils as part of the July Stimulus.

The funding is meant to help councils adapt their infrastructure to COVID-19 challenges, as well as improve overall safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

According to the NTA, this funding has been made solely for design and works which can be completed by the end of November 2020.

The single largest allocation is €686,000 for the resurfacing of Quay Street and High Street in the city centre.

After that comes €360,000 for the resurfacing of various roundabouts and junctions, specific locations of which have not been announced, to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.

€350,000 will be spent on the development of a cycleway between Ballybane and Briarhill along the N6, while a further €250,000 will go towards the reconstruction of “defective” footpaths and cycle tracks between the N6 Ballybane Junction and Browne Roundabout.

“The allocations being made today will go a long way in delivering a safe and sustainable environment for active travel in our villages, towns and cities,” Galway TD Hildegarde Naughton said.

“Travel to work, school or the local shop on two wheels instead of four will see an uplift from this much needed and timely financial endorsement by the Government.”

“I look forward to continuing to work with our local authorities as they continue on their journey to accelerate sustainable travel in the coming weeks and months through this fund and beyond.”

Galway Daily news Galway hospitals see COVID cases double in recent weeks

No further Covid related deaths have been reported by NPHET, but 61 new cases have been confirmed.

However, none of these cases are in Connacht, and again Dublin and Kildare have majority of new cases.

There is now a total of 27,969 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the State.

Of the 61 cases reported today, 39 are in Dublin, 13 are in Kildare and the remaining 9 cases are in Cork  Kerry, Laois, Limerick, Longford and Wicklow.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Galway is 509, according to the Department of Health.

Today’s cases are split equally among men and women (30 men and 30 women) while 67% are under 45 years of age.

23 are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case.

Dr. Ronan Glynn said: “I know that at times we can all feel powerless against COVID-19. But we are not.

“Each of us has a range of simple tools at our disposal – knowing the risks, washing our hands, not touching our faces, keeping physically distant, avoiding crowds, limiting visitors to our homes, and wearing a face covering.

“But the most powerful tool of all remains our solidarity with one another – by encouraging each other to stick with the basic measures and by continuing to act and adapt together we can suppress the transmission of this virus once again.”

A total of 55 people have been hospitalised due to Covid-19 in the past 30 days.

Phil Hogan apologises “fully and unreservedly” over Clifden golf dinner

0
Galway Daily news Phil Hogan to resign as EU Commissioner tonight

Phil Hogan has said today that he wishes to apologise “fully and unreservedly” for attending the Clifden golf dinner that has drawn national outrage.

Hogan was one of more than 80 guests at an event organised by the Oireachtas Golf Society on Wednesday.

In a statement today, Phil Hogan said that he wants to make a “fulsome and profound” apology for attending the event.

“I wish to apologise fully and unreservedly for attending the Oireachtas golf society dinner on Wednesday night last.”

“I want, in particular, to apologise to the wonderful healthcare workers, who continue to put their lives on the line to combat Covid 19 and all people who have lost loved ones during this pandemic.”

“I acknowledge my actions have touched a nerve for the people of Ireland, something for which I am profoundly sorry.”

“I realise fully the unnecessary stress, risk and offense caused to the people of Ireland by my attendance at such an event, at such a difficult time for all, and I am extremely sorry for this.”

He said that there is more than just “compliance with rules and regulations” to take into consideration at this time, and that people should show solidarity.

However, current COVID-19 regulations do explicitly state that indoor events should not be attended by more than 6 people, and that restaurants should seat no more than 6 people at a table.

A Garda investigation is underway to determine if the organisation of this event breached any COVID-19 regulations.

Phil Hogan said that he spoke to both Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar yesterday about this.

Hogan drew even greater ire than many others who attended, due to the initial reservations in his statements.

Initially Hogan said that he attended the event on the understanding that organisers and the hotel believed it to be compliant

But pressure has come from the direction of the government in the time since, with the Taoiseach saying that he should “consider his position” and that his initial apology “came lare”, but stopping short of outright calling for him to resign.

Minister for Agriculture Dara Calleary and Leas-Cathoirleach of the Seanad Jerry Buttimer have already resigned from their roles over this scandal.

The Taoiseach will ask the Ceann Comhairle on Monday to recall the Dáil from its summer recess early due to mounting public anger about this the needs addressing.

Weather warning issued for Galway

0
Galway Daily news Weather warning for continued heavy rain in Galway

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow weather warning for Galway and eight other counties.

The warning for heavy rain will start at midnight on Monday, and will remain in place overnight and throughout Tuesday.

Rainfall of 30 to 50mm is expected which may lead to some surface flooding, and Met Éireann says the heavy rain will further elevate river levels which could lead to river flooding.

The warning covers Connacht, Donegal, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

A separate wind warning has been issued for Munster and Wexford but this does not extend as far as Galway.

Before the miserable weather on Tuesday, though, we will get some dry and decent weather.

Tomorrow (Monday) will be mostly dry and bright, winds will will be mostly light and afternoon temperatures will reach 18 to 20 degrees.

Galway lifeboat comes to the aid of stranded kite surfer

Galway Daily news Lough Derg RNLI rescue two people after boat strikes rocks

The Galway RNLI lifeboat rescued a kite surfer who became stranded between Hare Island and Rabbit Island off Ballyloughane beach on Saturday evening.

The alarm was raised about the man in trouble by a member of the public at 5pm and the Irish Coast Guard sought the RNLI’s help.

The man who is in his early 30s had set off from Ballyloughane beach at about 4.50 pm as the tide was going out.

While he was kite surfing, the man became tired after falling several times, and ended up getting blown onto Rabitt Island from where he was rescued by the Lifeboat crew at about 5.20pm.

The man who was not from the area was wearing a wetsuit but not a lifejacket.

Deputy Launch Authority Mike Cummins says a key factor when taking to the water for any water sports activities is a knowledge of the local tides and wind direction.

The volunteer crew on the callout were Helmsman Declan Killilea, Brian Niland, Joanne Casserly and David McGrath with shore crew Sean King and David Oliver.

Water supply returns in Portumna and Ballinasloe

0
Galway Daily news Ballyconneelly water outages

Water supplies are beginning to return to normal in the Portumna and Ballinasloe areas today after successful repairs yesterday evening.

Power supply was returned to the Portumna wastewater treatment plant on Saturday evening after ongoing issues from Storm Ellen had knocked it offline.

The reservoir and water mains networks recharged yesterday evening, though tankers remained in place last night at Killimor Water Tower, Portumna Church and Portumna Library for those customers impacted.

In Ballinasloe, a burst main has been repaired in Creagh on the Ballinasloe Regional Water Supply has now been repaired and water supply restored to affected areas on the east side of town.

As the Sheepswalk reservoir is being refilled, water supply will return to Kiltormer and Cloontuskert this morning.

Water tankers have also been refilling Redmount Hill Reservoir, improving water supply to Eyrecourt, Meelick and Clonfert, though restrictions were in place overnight to ensure a steady supply today.

Irish Water is asking people to conserve water to assist efforts to refill reservoirs south of the town.

Storm Ellen caused chaos earlier this week when it hammered to west coast on Wednesday night, causing power outages that lingered for several days in places.

It also badly affected the water in the east of Galway, where power outages took treatment plants out of services.

Water restrictions had to be imposed in Ballinasloe when its plant went offline, in order to ensure a steady supply was preserved for Portiuncula Hospital.

In Portumna, power was initially restored to the plant on Friday, but there were follow up electrical issues once crews restarted the plant.

Dáil to be recalled early over Clifden golf dinner outrage

0
Galway Daily news Tánaiste to officially open new Tuam Community Nursing Unit next month

The government has given in to opposition pressure to recall the Dáil early due to public outrage over a large number of people at a golf society dinner in Clifden.

The Dáil is currently in recess, and was not due to return until September 15 from TDs six week summer break.

But the leaders of the coalition, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Leo Varadkar, and Eamon Ryan, have now agreed to recall the Dáil when schools reopen.

The Taoiseach will make this request to the Ceann Comhairle on Monday, after earlier saying it was not up to him to recall the Dáil.

Labour Leader Alan Kelly took to Twitter to say that it should be recalled on Tuesday, August 25, not after schools reopen.

Mr Kelly said on Friday that he had never seen “such public anger on an issue so quickly”.

Two senior politicians have already fallen over the Oireachtas Golf Society event, which was attended by over 80 people in Clifden this week.

Current COVID-19 regulations state that indoor events should not be attended by more than 6 people, and that restaurants should not seat more than 6 people at a table.

Agriculture Minister Dara Calleary and Leas-Comhairle of the Seanad Jerry Buttimer have already resigned their posts due to the event, and pressure is growing on EU Commissioner Phil Hogan to do the same.

Commissioner Hogan said in the aftermath of the event that he understood at the time that the organisers and hotel were confident it was compliant with regulations.

However this did little to damp the fires of public outrage, and the Taoiseach said that Hogan should “consider his position” in a statement that stopped short of calling on him to resign.

Gardaí have also confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine if the event broke any COVID-19 regualtions.

“As this is an active investigation An Garda Síochána has no further comment,” a statement  from the force said.

A Master’s student at NUI Galway has been announced as the winner of a highly competitive award of the National University of Ireland.

Póilín Nic Géidigh, a broadcaster from Gort an Choirce in Co. Donegal, scooped a T. K. Whitaker Prize, which is awarded to just two students each year.

The Whitaker awards, worth €1,000, are awarded to those who excel in Master’s degrees through the Irish language.

Professor Breandán Mac Suibhne of NUI Galway said that the award a richly deserved and that he is ‘absolutely delighted’ to see Póilín get national attention for her work.

“And I am delighted too for the faculty who direct our Irish-language media studies programme, which provides Irish-language speakers a pathway to employment in media and communications.”

Speaking about the Master’s in Cleachtas Gairmiúil sna Meáin, Póilín said: “I loved the MA, the practical elements were very hands-on and it was great to get placement experience in the media industry.

“Distance learning from Donegal allowed me to continue working in Donegal on different projects.

“I travelled to Galway once a month and my only regret is that I didn’t get to spend more time in that wonderful city!”

Póilín now works with RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in Doire Beaga in Gaoth Dobhair, and has previously been involved in television, broadcasting on TG4’s young peoples programming, Cúla4 ar Scoil and Campa Cúla 4.

A big fan of movies and television, Póilín started out her career in media doing Netflix and TV reviews.

“The practice-based part of the MA was a real draw for me. It is ideal for anybody who might be apprehensive about undertaking postgraduate study and created a fantastic and well-rounded foundation for my career in media,” she added.

Póilín might have to delay spending prize money though, as her preference is to holiday somewhere with better weather!

The independent TD said that the club has also received €78,000 in funding from the Capital Sports grants for the development of additional facilities at the Club House.

This money is being used for the community element of the project, to ensure a “modern and all-inclusive community facility” for the wider community.

Sylane hurling club recently purchased additional land adjacent to their existing pitch and are in the process of developing two training pitches which they hope to have in use in 2021.

“I acknowledge the work of the Sylane Hurling Club who have demonstrated determination and have put forward progressive plans for the benefit of the entire community since the club was founded in 1984.

“They have had success on and off the field of play since and bring together a spirit of participation for all ages,” Seán Canney said.
