Just Eat has launched its biggest ever charity campaign to support people in homelessness this Christmas.

The global takeaway delivery service will donate 50 cent from every order placed today to the Peter McVerry Trust, its longstanding charity partner.

As we look ahead to a very different Christmas, this weekend’s donation will go towards providing vital emergency supports to those struggling with homelessness this Christmas.

The latest homelessness figures show a continued increase in the number of families in emergency accommodation, with 8,737 people officially registered as homeless last month.

Just Eat Takeaway.com will be working with a number of charities across the world to ensure that the funds reach those most in need in the markets where the company operates.

“Throughout this difficult year we have supported our restaurant partners, customers and the couriers we work with and we wanted to continue this support during the challenging winter months,” said Just Eat Managing Director, Amanda Roche Kelly.

“We’re pleased to be able to make this donation to our longstanding charity partner in Ireland, Peter McVerry Trust, so that they can continue providing vital support to those most in need. Much like our colleagues in the restaurant sector, the traditional fundraising streams of our charities have been decimated as a result of the pandemic.”

Amanda Roche Kelly said that the ambition for this initiative is to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness and make it easy for customers to donate to those most at risk in our society.

“We’re delighted to be in the position to help our customers both support their local independent restaurant and the hard work of all those at Peter McVerry Trust by simply ordering their favourite takeaway this Saturday,” she said.

With charity donations disproportionately affected by the pandemic it is more important than ever to provide support to people in need.

Speaking about the Just Eat initiative, Head of Partnerships and Philanthropy at the Peter McVerry Trust, Nell Ward thanked Just Eat for their continued support.

“Homelessness is not where we want anyone to be this Christmas, or any other time of the year, so Peter McVerry Trust is honoured to be part of this global initiative as Just Eat Ireland’s charity of choice,” said Nell.

“Through this support we’re hoping to enhance our ability to create awareness of the issue of homelessness and respond to the growing needs of those most at risk during the weeks, months and difficult years ahead.”

To date, Just Eat Ireland has raised over €150,000 for the Peter McVerry Trust, which has helped to move 15 households out of homelessness and on to a brighter future.

To donate, customers just need to place an order on the Just Eat platform today, Saturday 19 December.

Galway Corinthians raise over €8,500 for Galway RNLI and Cancer Care West

Galway Daily news Galway Corinthians raise over €8,500 for Galway RNLI and Cancer Care West

Players and club members at Galway Corinthians RFC have raised over €8,500 for the Galway RNLI station and Cancer Care West with two fundraisers this season.

The first event saw senior members of the club undertake ‘Movember’ where players, management and committee members grew facial hair of some kind for the month of November.

In the second fundraiser, Club President Kieran Faherty, known fondly as “Flash”, made good use of his artistic talents for a worthy cause.

Kieran donated one of his paintings known as “Brewing Up A Storm”, a stunning view of Galway Bay that has proved very popular.

Prints and cards of this painting have completely sold out, with all proceeds going directly to the two charities.

Kenneth Casburn, one of the organisers and Senior Team Manager, explained how the idea for Movember came about. “After the first lock down, we started getting back into training with the focus of the games ahead,” he said.

“Unfortunately, there was uncertainty of the structure of the season and whether matches would proceed or not so we focused on the now and tried to lift the mood in the Squad.

“I came up with the idea of doing Movember and I spoke with JP Cooney, Michael Harding and Simon Gillespie (Senior Team Coaches) and Aaron Broderick (First Team Captain) and I mentioned it to them about the lads getting behind the idea.”

Kenneth had the Galway RNLI and Cancer Care West in mind as the two organisations to raise money for due to some pretty simple reasons.

“Galway RNLI have been rescuing people throughout the year and the successful rescue operation of the two girls during the summer off Galway Bay lifted the spirits of people of people not only in Galway but nationwide during what has been a tough time for everyone.”

And everyone at the club is familiar with the work of Cancer Care West Kenneth says, with their cause hitting close to home.

“Our own head coach JP was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer and his courage and strength was an inspiration to everyone at the club from minis all the way to seniors. It was only right that they too would benefit from the funds that are raised.”

Lockdown flattens small businesses, says ISME Chief Executive

0
galway daily news nphet level 5 lockdown

The Chief Executive of ISME has warned that bringing in increased Covid-19 restrictions immediately after Christmas will be devastating for small businesses.

ISME say that they are worried about increased pre-New Year restrictions not because they are against the use of lockdown to fight Covid, but because it should not be “the only tool used against it”.

“Lockdown is very effective at flattening the curve with a hammer, but it flattens small business as well,” said Neil McDonnell, Chief Executive of ISME.

“We have made this repeatedly clear, as has the advice from the WHO. We wrote to all Ministers and TDs with the note below on 2 November.

“We wrote to the Tánaiste with the attached letter on 9 December, advocating rapid antigen testing before New Year return to work.”

Mr McDonnell said that Dr Tony Holohan “effectively undermined antigen testing” on Morning Ireland today, “despite the fact that is has a useful part to play, especially in workplaces where employees must physically show up to work”.

“This is despite the fact that the EU Commission adopted a clear recommendation on Antigen testing in November.”

The EU Commission said that rapid antigen tests can offer a significant advantage over RT-PCR tests in terms of simplicity of equipment needed, lower demands of highly skilled operators, price and timeliness of results, by providing health services with easy to use and rapid results which will also help to relieve the pressure on healthcare systems

“We have enough experience with the Covid-19 virus to know that there are other measures we should be taking to control its spread,” added Mr McDonnell.

“Testing, tracing, isolation and control must be part of that suite of measures, and employers have told Government that they are willing to play their part, consistent with the guidelines set out by the EU Commission.”

Hairdressers seek approval to remain open in Level 4

Galway Daily news Hairdressers seek approval to remain open in Level 4

Hairdressers are asking to be allowed to remain open under Level 4 of the Living with Covid plan in the event that restrictions are tightened once again.

The Irish Hairdressers Federation has published updated health & safety guidelines, which it hopes will allow its members to stay open in Level 4.

It is likely that restrictions will be tightened once again after Christmas, with NPHET expressing concern about rising case numbers, and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar indicating that some new restrictions could be brought in between Christmas and New Years.

Under Level 4 restrictions, only essential retail and services, and businesses which primarily take place outdoors, would be allowed to remain open.

The IHF represents represents over 500 salon owners nationwide, employing more than 7,000 hairdressers and stylists.

Danielle Kennedy, President of the IHF, said “since we published our first health & safety document six months ago, a lot has changed in our response to the pandemic. We now know a lot more about how to control it and we decided to take a fresh look at our document alongside our health & safety experts.

“It is important that we constantly try to review and improve how we respond to the pandemic. We hope the Government will look at this and consider allowing us to remain open in Level 4 of the Living with Covid plan.’’

The updated guidelines from the IHF focus on updated legal mandates for face masks, ensuring that employees are trained on the different type of close of casual contacts a person may have, as well as on the EU traffic light system for clients who have travelled from outside the country.

“Our focus is to continue to operate safely and responsibly. The hair industry is not just a major contributor to local economies around Ireland, it helps keep countless main streets alive and is a huge part of local communities.’’

The organisers of the The Reach for the Stars competition which launched this week are looking for the best astro-photographs taken in Ireland between 1 January 2020 to 31st March 2021.

The winner will receive a €500 voucher for photographic or telescopic equipment, the publication of their images on the DIAS and Irish Times websites and a VIP tour of DIAS Dunsink Observatory, which includes the chance to peer through Ireland’s largest telescope.

Professor Peter Gallagher, Head of DIAS Astrophysics, who launched the competition on Wednesday, said: “We all love looking up at the night sky and admiring how spectacular it can be. With recent advances in cameras and indeed in phone cameras, astrophotography has grown in popularity in recent years.”

“2020 has been a great year for astronomy fans, featuring supermoons, sunspots appearing for the first time in years, and soon, Jupiter and Saturn coming together in the evening sky on the winter solstice.”

He added that people across the country are capturing breath-taking images of such events and that entrants do not need to be astronomy or photography professionals.

“Anyone with an interest in astronomy and photography – whether as a hobby, a burning passion or a fulltime career – can enter.

“Our only stipulations are that entrants must be over 18; they must have taken their photograph on the island of Ireland during the time period specified; and – obviously – their photograph must depict something of astronomical interest.”

Entrants may submit up to three images to the competition, and the deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday, 2nd April 2021.

40% of Covid tracker app users unsure of its benefits, research shows

0
galway daily news covid tracker app

Almost four in ten users of the HSE’s Covid Tracker App are unsure of its benefit in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus, researchers have revealed.

Researchers at NUI Galway and University of Limerick said the results of the survey should be considered when planning communications around the value of smartphone-assisted tracking and tracing for Covid-19.

The HSE Covid Tracker App was launched in early July and currently has over 1.3 million active users.

More than 5,500 people who have tested positive for Covid-19 since July have been able to warn other contacts who have the app that they may have recently been exposed to the virus.

This means that more than 10,000 app users were warned about a Covid-19 contact that they may potentially have been unaware of.

With public health restrictions relaxed in the run up to Christmas, the COVIGILANT research team said it is more important than ever to better understand the attitudes relating to the tracker app and the anonymised data it collects on your phone.

“Contact tracing and asking people to reduce their social contacts is hugely important in reducing spread of the coronavirus,” said Dr Mike O’Callaghan, GP and UL Research Fellow in the Lero COVIGILANT research group.

“The Covid Tracker App is designed to strengthen our contact tracing system but a consistent message we are hearing from our survey is that many users of the app are yet to be convinced that it is helping.”

Dr Jane Walsh, Director of the mHealth Research Group at NUI Galway added that while the vast majority of people say the app is user friendly and well designed, many respondents in the survey would like to see more detail from the HSE as to the effect it is having.

“However, it is very difficult for the HSE to give a detailed picture of where and how the app is helping, as it is specifically designed to protect peoples’ privacy,” said Dr Walsh.

“As we need to use every tool available against this virus, we hope our research will highlight the need to inform the general public about the usefulness of the app. Simply put, the more people trust it and use it, the more contacts it will pick up and the more it can make a difference.

“The survey signals a need to strengthen the communications around the benefits of the app, but it is also further proof that the app is living up to its security and privacy commitments. These are hugely important aspects in order to reassure the public.”

Dr Liam Glynn, Professor of General Practice at UL’s School of Medicine, said that as we try to open up society and the economy further next year, increasing our social contacts will mean increased risk of Covid-19 transmission.

“The app is potentially at its most powerful in crowded areas where people don’t necessarily know each other and where it can warn of anonymous contacts.

“We feel ongoing public health messaging about the app and reassurance around the data security and privacy features will be vitally important if the Irish public are going to continue to use this app into the new year,” he said.

A recent online survey by the COVIGILANT research group, led by NUI Galway, UL and Lero received more than 2,800 responses. It showed:

:: 93% think the Covid Tracker App is easy to use and 81% feel its main function is to help the HSE with contact tracing.

:: 44% (1265) of respondents feel the app is helping our national effort against this virus.

:: 38% (1089) are unsure if the app is helping in the national effort

:: 40% (1158) of respondents reported that they have not seen evidence that the app is helping our national effort against Covid-19.

:: 7% reported Bluetooth related problems when using the app, with battery life issues being the main issue of concern.

Interested members of the public can fill in the consent form at the following link https://forms.gle/31Jvdrw5J5XeVwSu6 or email the research team at manzar.abbas@ul.ie.
