The Fourth Undergraduate Research Conference was held recently at NUI Galway, which focused on a range of research topics including technology, transportation, environment, disability, law, advances in medicine and tourism.

The 2018 Undergraduate Research Conference aimed to engage students and staff in a collaborative multidisciplinary research environment, promoting vital research skills in presentation and communication.

Conference organiser, Lorraine Tansey, Institute for Lifecourse and Society, said: “The multi-disciplinary space is an important opportunity for our students who learn their specific course content in silos. At the conference students are getting a feel for what life will be like as alumni, working, volunteering and being in a world where we need work together from across the subject boundaries to tackle real life problems.”

Students from across all disciplines participated and spoke and shared with students. Keynote speaker, Áine Gallagher from ‘Bright Club’ shared how comedy and research can combine to engage non-specialists with a variety of topic areas.

Professor Lokesh Joshi, Vice-President for Research at NUI Galway supports undergraduate engagement: “Undergraduate research is the pedagogy for the 21st century – all students should learn through inquiry and research. The ecology of a university depends on a deep and abiding understanding that inquiry, investigation and discovery are at the heart of the university. Research plays a very big role in identifying opportunities and solving problems that our society and planet faces.”

Professor Joshi, added: “As a research-led university, undergraduate students are a vital part of the research community and we are delighted to nurture their enthusiasm for research through a variety of student programmes. Students are gaining valuable research skills like communication, presentation, and teamwork as they share in small groups and hear from keynote speakers.”

Shínigh an tUachtarán an barántas a fhuasclaíonn Maolra Seoige óna chiontú ag ocáid a bhí ar siúl in Áras an Uachtaráin um thráthnóna.

I Lúnasa 1882 a tharla na dúnmharaithe is measa sa 19ú céad áit ar dhéineadh ionsaí ar teaghlach ar fad ina dtigh féin. Maraíodh cúigear den seisear sa tigh an oíche san, do bhí an duine is óige 14 agus an duine is sine 80.

Bhí Maolra Seoighe ar dhuine de thriúir a ciontaíodh agus a crocadh de bharr na dúnmharaithe sin ach tráthnónna inniu faoi dheireadh tugadh faoiseamh dá chlann nuair a shín an tUachtarán an barántas.

Beidh Murdair Mhám Trasna scannán fáisnéise á thaispeánt anocht ar TG4 ag 21.30 agus beidh sé ar fáil ar fud an domhain ar an sheinnteoir TG4

Scéal é Murdair Mhám Trasna, fadscannán a bhí á choimisiniú ag TG4 agus chomh-mhaoiniú ag an BAI, faoi dúnmharú cúigear den teaghlach céanna i Mhám Trasna in Iarthar na hÉireann in 1882 agus an t-iomrall ceartais a lean de bharr fianaise bhréige agus breabaireachta, agus faoin mbaint a bhí ag an gcás le titim rialtas na Breataine ina dhiaidh sin.

“Táimid thar a bheith sásta le cinneadh an Uachtaráin, ar chomhairle ón Rialtas, pardún a thabhairt sa chás seo. Bhíomar ag súil le linn na scannánaíochta go dtabharfaí pardún dó ach ní raibh súil ar bith againn go dtárlódh sé chomh sciobtha, sula raibh an clár féin craolta fiú.

Ní bheidh amhras ar dhuine ar bith a fhéachfaidh ar an scannán ach gurb é an ceart é an pardún a thabhairt sa chás seo. Molaimid an tUachtarán Ó hUigín dá dhílseacht féin do chearta bunúsacha daonna agus teanga.”

Galway Together for Yes campaign off to a flying start

“It was just torture,” said Arnette Lyons, describing her experience traveling to the UK for a termination to a large crowd at the launch of Galway’s Together for Yes campaign.

Lyons – from pro-choice group Terminations For Medical Reasons – was one of four guest speakers at the event, which took place yesterday evening at the Harbour Hotel.

NUI Galway law professor Eoin Daly gave a legal perspective on the “historic mistake” that was the Eighth Amendment to Ireland’s Constitution.

Dr. Michael Creed also spoke about the medical side to abortion, outlining the many ways that the eighth amendment prevents medical professionals from keeping their oath to do no harm. Dr. Creed is a member of Doctors for Choice.

Lyons found out at the twelve-week scan of her third pregnancy six years ago that the baby – already named Skye – had a fatal condition.

“She had so much wrong with her on the scan that the obstetrician there and then told us that she wasn’t going to live. Automatically I suppose I thought that something was going to be done there and then…only to be told that there was absolutely nothing that could be done for me, or my husband, or my family. I was so shocked. I had never realised that the Eighth Amendment had such an effect, even when your baby was going to inevitably die.

“I suppose when you’ve been given the news that your baby’s going to die, it’s the worst possible news ever. And then on top of it to be told your only option is to carry your baby possibly to full term, or to travel to the UK for a termination – I was just so shocked.

“And at a time when I suppose we should have been grieving for little Skye, it was all logistics. It was all about how to get to England, where to go, what to do. No information from anybody. I actually thought that I was the only one that this ever happened to.

I couldn’t believe what was happening. It was just like torture.”

The Together for Yes campaign seeks a Yes vote in the referendum on repealing the Eighth Amendment which is due to be held at the end of May.

Among the many attendees filling the room were Galway West TD Hildegarde Naughton, who commented:

“There’s a fantastic turnout here, and really good speakers from the medical point of view, from the legal side, and then from the personal experiences of women. So I think it’s very well run, and I think if we had more of this engagement right throughout the country, and get the facts out there, again from the medical and the legal perspective as well as womens’ personal experiences. I think it’s a very good approach to this campaign.”

Finally, national Together for Yes campaign’s Orla O’Connor spoke about the goals of the campaign and the importance of the referendum, which is due to be held in late May.

“I think it was a really brilliant launch,” she said. “It was fantastic to see so many people here for the launch of Galway Together for Yes and you can really feel the energy in the room.

“I think it was very inspiring and particularly as well  hearing Arnette Lyons talking about the experience of having to travel, because that is so much of what the campaign is about, it’s about the stories and experiences of women so that we tell people what the reality of abortion is actually like and of having to travel and facing that stress and trauma.”

Michelle Gavin, a longtime Galway resident but originally from Westport, was in attendance.

“It was good to get a variety of insights. Legal insight, medical insight, campaign insight and then the actual lived experience insight. One of the my favourite elements of the campaign has been the In Her Shoes – which is the stories of women who’ve had a choice, they’ve not always chosen abortion but had the choice whether to do it or not,” Michelle said.

Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif information night is to be held in Clifden this evening, 4th April at 7pm in the Station House Hotel.

Tonight’s community briefing is being held at the Station House, Clifden, by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with cycling specialists Ride Wild. Ride Wild is managed by Michael O’Boyle, a (young) veteran of European cycling events.

Over the last few years he has worked with both Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland in planning cycling routes along the stunning Wild Atlantic Way, culminating in him and his team at Ride Wild being appointed as the management company for their flagship cycling event, the Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif.

GALWAY GAA: “Real Contenders for the All-Ireland” – Danny Hughes

0

Former Down footballer Danny Hughes believes Galway are genuine contenders in the All-Ireland Football Championship race after their league final performance against Dublin on Sunday.

Writing in his column in the Irish News, he said “Galway will have gained so much from the game.

“For a start, they were very competitive throughout and can look back at key moments and perhaps take solace from the fact it was a game they could have won.

“Defensively, Galway reduced Dublin to a couple of goal chances and, given the Dubs’ forward line, I count that as a big success.

“Offensively, from a Galway perspective this was not the dour encounter foretold in some quarters since the League started in January.

“The general attitude southern media and pundits hold toward ‘Northern’ teams, in particular any individual from Tyrone, never really surprises me.

“When Galway decided to employ the services of Paddy Tally, suddenly defending properly was a crime. It was, as one pundit called it, ‘ugly’.

“While the Cavan v Roscommon game was exciting to watch, it played out like a minor game in comparison to the Galway-Dublin match.

“Apparent in what I have seen of Galway this year, in particular in the League final, was their ability to defend effectively, skilfully and get the balance right between defending and attacking.

“Galway are a work in progress.

“They provide a serious threat to the equilibrium of things in Connacht.

“Given Galway’s League form, I am very confident they will make the ‘Super Eights’.

“Even if Galway don’t win a Connacht title, with Tally’s involvement and experience, I see them as real contenders for the All-Ireland.”

Galway begin their Connacht Championship campaign against Mayo on Sunday, 13th May in MacHale Park, Castlebar.

Galway TD tells people in fuel poverty to avail of Warmer Homes Scheme

0
GALWAYDAILY heating warmer homes

Galway East TD Sean Canney has urged householders struggling to pay fuel bills to avail of improvements to the Warmer Homes Scheme.

The scheme, which aims to help all those living in fuel poverty, is being extended to cover major energy efficiency upgrades, including external wall insulation, renewable heating systems and replacement windows.

The initial scheme offered grants for home improvements such as attic insulation, draught proofing, low energy light bulbs, cavity wall insulation and lagging jackets.

“This is an opportunity for everyone who needs help making their homes more energy efficient to get financial support,” said Sean Canney TD.

“I would urge anyone who feels they may be qualified to apply.”

People are deemed to be in fuel poverty if they spend more than 10% of their household income on energy bills.

GALWAY SOCCER: FAI YOUTH INTERLEAGUE SEMI-FINAL ON SATURDAY

0

The Galway League’s under 18 soccer team are in the Youth Interleague semi-final this Saturday (7th April, 2pm) when they travel to take on their Cork counterparts.

Managed by Ollie Neary and Damien Brennan, they’ll be hoping a large travelling contingent head south for the away tie as they team looked to book their place in an FAI Final.

There are a couple of injury doubts for the Tribesmen’s with Conor Higgins definitely ruled out with an ankle injury.  Galway know they will need to be at their very best to get to the final against a strong Cork side, who were comfortable quarter-final winners over Wicklow.

But they have showed great so far winning all their games including eight different players on the scoreboard.  Mark Melody, Brian Lydon, Colin Kelly, Niall Rooney, Morgan Leggett, Mikey Devaney, Jason Gorham and Jack Flaherty have been on target.  Kelly has since moved onto to the National League.

Galway were comfortable winners in their opening two games.  They got past Clare 4-1 in the first round in October before repeating that result against Limirick in the last 16.  However, they needed an extra-time winner from Rooney in the quarter-final against Donegal and District League in Mervue last month.

The Galway League travel to face the Cork League this Saturday (7th April) in the FAI Youth Interleague Semi-Final.  Kick-off in Cork is 2pm.

Darren’s Diary – Kicking The Habit (Week 6) – Tuesday, 3rd April

0

It’s been a strange couple of days since last we spoke.  Actually, always felt this could be one of the entries that would be hard to decide what way to go.

I said my goodbyes to the daily diaries only three days ago so it seems odd to be writing another entry already.  Likewise, I was at a bit of a loss on Sunday and Monday evening as I missed sitting down to tell you about my day 🙂

I hope everyone had a great Easter and the eggs were enjoyed.  Had my fair share too.  Indeed, I ate a full one on Sunday which is pretty much the height of greed.  The girls got me a massive Crème Egg and like Joey Tribbani and the Thanksgiving dinner, I felt I had to give it a go.

Lesson learned from that experience.  When you’re nearly 40, you can’t eat a full Easter egg anymore!!!  Actually, when you are spoiled that much to get one that big, you can’t eat it in one sitting at any age!!!  Enjoy the treats but in moderation 🙂

However, back to the purpose of this article which is about my experiences quitting the cigarettes, I passed the second major test on Sunday night.

It was quite funny actually as we didn’t think on Saturday the option was there but Sinead and myself decided to go out Sunday night.  Neither of us had plans but we kind of talked each other into it and I’m glad we did.

I had said coming back from the ladies football match in Clonberne was that it was a pity we didn’t make plans as I was taking Monday off – a rare treat for a sports journalist.

We were still sticking with the ‘wine in’ plan when Sinead remembered that her cousin Lisa had suggested plans and came to me about it after she had a shower.

All of a sudden, we were both getting ready for a night out and as it had been a while since we did, there was an element of excitement to it.

Easter Sunday is always a good night out.  I can never remember a bad one.  Those who made sacrifices during Lent are free to indulge again.  And others are home for the long weekend and there generally does be a good atmosphere in town.

My only problem was that there was a plan to purchase Nicorette before Martin’s 40th in two weeks so there was a slight apprehension on my part.  But as it turned out, our spontaneity actually was a blessing.

Sinead was stocked up with Wrigley’s for me and we met Lisa and Declan in An Tain.  It was a nice night having the craic and there was a good crowd out there and also in Brewery Lane where we ventured after.

The cravings cropped up a couple of times but I took two gums from Sinead each time.  And when I did walk out to the smoking area in Brewery Lane (just to take the chewing gum out of my mouth), I was back in within 10 seconds as didn’t fancy the smell out there.

I always enjoy An Tain and am good friends with the manager Johnny Mulvihill.  Likewise, am delighted for Mike O’Brien that he finally got across the road after a good time in Maud Millars.  A great night!

We had a few drinks but nothing that delivered major hangovers after and we enjoyed Supermacs after.  But it was that night out for a few pints and I did it without smoking or nicotine gums.  And I really felt comfortable without them.

The smoking area in Brewery Lane was packed during my very brief time out there.  Not long ago, I might have been one of those sitting there.  I understand why pubs need smoking areas now but sometimes you feel it splits the crowd in two.

That being said, we had a good crowd in the main bar enjoying the music so it worked well.  And sure, I’ll never be allowed give out about smoking areas now just because I quit.  Sure, didn’t my own story with Sinead start over a conversation in a smoking area 😉

Otherwise, the Bank Holiday Weekend has been very relaxing.  We watched Jurassic Park yesterday and along with some soaps and Red Rock, we didn’t over exert much afterwards.

And today has been just being catching up with reports and I decided to give working the full day in Taughmaconnell a go.  Bar a couple of interruptions from the five-year-old supervisor (🙂), it hasn’t been too bad.

Next week, we’ll have a full week to chat about and more to tell you.  But six weeks have been completed.  And that’s cool 🙂

GALWAY GAA: HELP US PICK THE GALWAY DAILY FOOTBALL ALL-STARS

0
GAA Fixtures

Galway Daily has decided to get our followers help us in selecting All-Star teams across various spectrums during 2018.

Starting this week, we want to select 45 nominations for the four Gaelic Games codes at national level plus the county senior hurling and football championships.

However, to ensure that our selections are taken across the full season, we are going to hold three rounds of polls to select our nominations before a final poll to pick our team of the year after the various championships.

After the conclusion of the leagues, we will do the first poll.  The second will take place after the provincial championships (championship round-robin groups in camogie).  The third round will be after the All-Ireland finals giving us 15 players from each group totaling 45 for the final selection.

The format for the county championships will be announced at a future date.

As the National Football League finals took place last weekend, we are ready to commence our first selection of 15 nominations in Gaelic Football with polls to appear over the next 24 hours.

Whether you want to pick the Galway player or one from another county, the decision is yours!  Also, while we hope voters will follow our twitter page, these polls are open to anyone with a twitter account.

We’ll announce our first 15 nominations on Thursday morning so keep an eye.  We have selected 60 players in the 15 different positions.  All you have to do is pick the best player so far.

Galway’s stunning start to the season has seen eight players selected.  But only a maximum of seven can go through as two are named in the same position.

League champions Dublin have the most players with nine while Monaghan join Galway in second spot on eight.

Division Two winners Roscommon have five along with Tyrone.  Cavan, Kerry and Mayo have four players each.  Division Three winners Armagh, Cork and Down have two players named.

Division Four winners Laois have one player on the list with Donegal, Tipperary and Westmeath completing the list.

The 15 players selected by our followers won’t be included in the Round Two and Three selections later in the year.  But they are guaranteed to be in the final 45 when we pick our team in the autumn.

GALWAY LGFA: (Reaction) – STEPHEN GLENNON

Stephen Glennon

Galway will need to beat Westmeath next Sunday in their final round robin game in the LIDL Ladies National Football League after suffering defeat to Cork last week.

Despite a Leanne Coen goal before half-time, majors from Orla Finn, Marie O’Callaghan and Ciara O’Sullivan put Cork into the knock out stages.  But following their previous win over Dublin, they remain one win away from qualifying.

While disappointed with the result, manager Stephen Glennon was relatively happy with the performance when he spoke to Galway Daily afterwards.

galway daily asking price increases galway

Galway city has seen an especially sharp increase in asking prices in the first quarter of 2018.

The City saw an 11% increase on the year to €250,000 at the median, according to the latest myhome.ie report – the Irish Times’ property website.

Across Co Galway, the median asking price was €220,000 – up 10.6% on the year.

The report showed that in Galway the median asking price for a three-bed semi-detatched house was €200,000, an annual change of 1%.

The median asking price for a three-bed semi in Cork was €230,000 and in Donegal it was just €95,000.

For a two-bedroom apartment, the median asking price was €175,000 in the first three months of 2018, a huge 25% change on the same period last year. Again, to to compare, it was also €175,00 in Cork, and in Donegal it was €45,000.

€205,000 was the median asking price for a four-bedroom semi-detatched house in Co Galway in Q1 of 2018, which was a 3.5% increase on the last three months of 2017.

The report also showed that in 2017, the number of transactions over €1m nationally was 826 such – up 25% on the 661 recorded in 2016 and up fivefold from the 160 sold in 2011.

In Galway, the percentage increase was higher than the national average – at 42% – with 17 houses cracking the €1m price-bracket.

The most expensive housing transaction in Dublin was the €9.5m paid for ‘Gorse Hill’, Killliney, in July. Outside Dublin, the most expensive house was sold in Blackrock in Cork for €4.1m.

The trends presented in the report are based on actual asking prices of properties advertised on MyHome.ie.

Galway Arts Centre is delighted to present works by artists from Engage Art Studios Galway.

The exhibition is a snapshot of current studio practices, research themes and experiments in medium by 15 of the 25 members of the studios, located in Middle St and Francis St in Galway City.

While each artist has an individual practice and set of processes, they are interested in the nature of creating artworks in an age of mass image-based media where often time the image that represents an event, person or place becomes its own entity with its own truth and value, separate from reality and original source.
