Lohan calls for inclusion of artists lofts and exhibition space in Nuns’ Island masterplan

Galway daily news Lohan calls for artists lofts and exhibition space in Nuns Island redevelopment

Sinn Féin representative Mark Lohan has said that the planned €200 million redevelopment of Nuns’ Island should include Artists Lofts and exhibition space.

NUI Galway are developing a masterplan for a major redevelopment of Nuns’ Island which will include both cultural and residential elements.

Mark Lohan described the project as “an opportunity to deliver a public library space, artists lofts, and a municipal exhibition space” in the heart of Galway city.

“I have submitted these ideas to the masterplan forum for Nuns’ Island and it is my hope that they will be considered and generate a conversation around delivery,” added Lohan.

“Artists lofts exist in other jurisdictions where state and local laws encourage the subsidised living and working of local artists in a municipality.”

He added that “The nurturing of the creative arts is an investment in the future of the city”.

A public consultation on the proposals made for the Nuns’ Island project was recently undertaken by NUI Galway, with people invited to give feedback on the ideas generated so far.

The masterplan covers 15 acres of the island and will include the redevelopment of a number of unused buildings such as a dilapidated brewery, and the relocation of St. Joseph’s College ‘The Bish’.

“Artists are part of the creative lifebood if Galway city and we must provide the space where they can live, work, and evolve,” the city central Sinn Féin representative said.

He argued that publicly funded loft living and work space is “a viable way to deliver on this goal”.

“The benefit of a thriving artistic community in our city will return to the social and economic life of Galway city in multiples of any investment”.

He added that this infrastructure would be an appropriate physical legacy to the 2020 European Capital of Culture.

Mark Lohan was one of three Sinn Féin city councillors, serving from 2016 to 2016 after being co-opted to take the seat of Anna Marley who was elected to the city central district in 2014 and later resigned.

He and his party colleagues Mairéad Farrell and Cathal Ó Conchúir were all eliminated in the May local elections this year.

For a city with a strong focus on the arts, Galway’s shortage of proper public exhibition spaces has become a topic of serious debate recently.

In recent days there have been many saying that the Festival Gallery on William Street, which was created for this year’s Galway International Arts Festival, should be kept as a permanent exhibition spot.

Lohan said that a municipal exhibition space and a new public library are projects that are also well suited to this masterplan.

Galway Daily news New additions coming to Galway City playgrounds

The Millennium Park playground and green space for children in Galway city has been awarded the Green Flag environmental award.

Only awarded for exceeding tough environmental standards in green space management, and excellence of visitor attractions, the Green Flag Award for Parks are an internationally recognised mark of quality.

The Millennium Park, located next to Galway Cathedral, became one of the latest sites to receive this accreditation at the 2019 awards which were announced in Maynooth University recently.

To mark this award, Galway City Council will host a flag raising ceremony at the Children’s Millennium Park on Thursday 1st August, 2019 at 10am.

The Green Flag Awards are judged every year by a peer jury of green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement.

From among 17 countries whose parks met the standard this year there were more awards secured by Irish Parks and Gardens than by any country, other than the UK where the scheme originated in 1996.

In Ireland the Green Flag Award for Parks Scheme has been enthusiastically received by park management as it delivers major wins for the delivery of quality green spaces by respective parks and park departments.

“In terms of urban renewal, and rural and community development, the Green Flag Award for Parks is a logical and sensible step towards supporting community engagement with green space improvement, and helps increase quality of life within our communities,” said Robert Moss, manager of the awards scheme in Ireland.

Solidarity rally with Ahmadyyian Muslim community after mosque attack

Galway Daily news Solidarity rally tonight after Ahmadiyya mosque attack

The Galway Anti-Racism Network is holding a solidarity rally outside the Maryam Masjid mosque in Ballybrit which was violently vandalised overnight.

The mosque was the subject of a severe amount of criminal damage in an attack that saw windows smashed in, personal items tossed outside, and damage to the prayer room and the office of Iman Noonan.

The incident is being investigated by Gardaí, and a clear motive for this attack has not yet been established.

Iman Noonan said that he had received warning of an attack several months ago over the phone from someone who said they were part of a group that were against Muslims and mosques in Ireland.

The attack on the mosque has been condemned from all corners today including the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan and the Bishop of Galway.

Iman Ibrahim Noonan said online that there were no words to describe how he felt at seeing a peaceful place of worship destroyed.

“The whole Mosque was covered in glass and the hall ways and everywhere out side,” his facebook post read.

“But when I saw my office where I work, my private library of over 2000 books destroyed, my family photos abused and thrown outside, the Tri colour insulted. It was this that broke my heart.”

“Whoever done this, I really feel sorry for you, only in time will you realise how foolish you were and how you insulted this great nation or ours.”

The solidarity rally will take place at 9:30pm tonight outside the Ballybrit mosque and GARN are inviting anyone to join them.

‘Irondad’ completes gruelling 32 day triathlon challenge

galway daily triathlon galway declan loy

On the 27th of June, Declan Loy set out to complete thirty-two 111km triathlons in thirty-two days.

From the glens of Antrim to the ring of Kerry, Declan planned to complete a 1km swim, a 100km cycle and a 10k run every single day in every county in Ireland.

Two weeks ago, Declan ran, cycled and swam his way through Galway.

And yesterday, the Newry man completed his 32nd triathlon on the 32nd day in Dundalk along with 150 people who were there to support him.

Declan’s challenge raised funds for the not-for-profit organisation Super You, which focuses on supporting, empowering and inspiring young people through engaging workshops and schemes.

The 46-year-old, who lives in Castlebellingham with his three children and wife, developed the name ‘Irondad’ after breaking a Guinness World Record in 2018 after completing 32 Ironmans in 12 months.

Having developed a hunger for another challenge he decided upon the 32 Challenge and called it the Irondad Challenge.

He began his journey in Newry Co. Down and made his way through each county in Ireland, completing an impressive 3,555Km in total.

But Declan doesn’t class himself as an athlete.

For him, he’s just a normal Dad with an interest in exercising and a drive to raise funds for an organisation that can really support young people in Ireland.

When asked about his challenge, Declan said: “I have been blown away with the triathlon clubs throughout Ireland that have willing come forward and helped me arrange the 111km triathlon in the different counties and those who kept me company along the way by taking part.

“Even the communities coming out to support us has been fantastic. To every person who has handed me a cup of tea, a sandwich and even an ice cream, thank you.

“It’s been very tough but very humbling to see how people will help me for such a great cause.”

This year the Super You team have visited numerous schools and youth groups across the island of Ireland, delivering talks to over 5,000 students promoting positive mental health and well-being.

With the suicide rate in Ireland being extremely high among young people, this challenge and organisation is extremely important and that’s one of the main reasons for Declan taking on this gruelling and heroic challenge.

Declan continued: “It has definitely been a tough month and my body began to shut down towards the end of last week.

“The muscles were aching and the mind was struggling but I just took it one step at a time and with the support of my family and others including Peter Tomany who is a brilliant coach and friend I managed to get over the finish line and achieve my goal.”

On completion Declan said he will take a well deserved break and maybe consider the next challenge in a few months’ time!

Construction Industry Federation says drawn out planning process delaying housing and infrastructure in the west

0
Galway daily news Planning refused for huge housing development on Galway City outskirts

The western branch of the Construction Industry Federation has said the government must review the planning system to ensure that housing and infrastructure projects are delivered in a timely fashion.

The CIF has said that in the past five years there has been a growing number of construction projects in the west which have been delayed or shut down altogether by judicial reviews.

According to the CIF’s recent National Crane Count there were 123 cranes operating in Dublin, while there were only two operating in Galway city.

Galway is expected to grow at twice the rate of Dublin according to the Government’s “Project Ireland 2040” plan. But the CIF says that target is “unlikely to be met” based on the disparity in construction activity.

“Our concern is that the window to begin these projects with any hope of completion on time is closing rapidly,” said Justin Molloy CIF Western & Midlands Regional Director.

“Judicial Reviews and other delays in our planning system are a major threat to the delivery timelines of projects critical to the development of the Western region.”

He warned that the use of judicial reviews to challenge the planning process is increasing, adding that where the do occur they should be “carefully monitored” and carried out in a timely fashion.

“Too many critical regional and national projects have been delayed, and in the case of the Apple Data Centre in Athenry shelved, to the detriment of the people in the West.”

The CIF says that in 2018 there were 41 Judicial Review proceedings, while in 2019 to date there have been 34, with the federation saying the number of judicial reviews in on track to double by the end of 2019.

“As a result, the CIF is requesting that the Government review Judicial Reviews within the decision-making process to ensure its usage is optimum,” Justin Molloy said.

“Critical will be the need to set strict time frames to assess the validity of Judicial Reviews and their subsequent processing through the courts.”

“The CIF has stated that the principle of locus standi should be applied as a threshold before a Judicial Reviews is undertaken. This would mean that only those living in an area affected by a proposed development can object.”

“The new Strategic Housing Development legislation is welcome as it does give statutory time frames that An Bórd Pleanála must adhere to.”

“However, while our planning system sets out time frames for adjudicating on planning applications / appeals, no such time frames exist when decisions by planning authorities, or indeed An Bórd Pleanála, are the subject of Judicial Review.”

“We’re calling on Government to address this issue in the system to ensure we have the most effective and efficient system that protects the individual’s rights whilst enabling the type of sustainable development that benefits the entire region.”

A north-east Galway club has received nationwide recognition after being named this year’s FAI Club of the Year.

Colemanstown United FC won the prestigious title after a tense wait for the announcement at the FAI Delegates Dinner.

This came to the ‘absolute utter shock and amazement’ of the six delegates in attendance.

The Galway club took home the award by beating off a total of five clubs from four other counties, and it recognises and celebrates the greater Colemanstown community’s voluntary activity in the Club.

The decision to apply for the Club of the Year application came from Director of Football, Robbie Parker whose insight and vision helped in the application process.

The club’s presentation entitled: ‘There is a Jersey for Everyone’ was highly commended by the five person judging panel.

As part of the itinerary of the presentation on the day, the club also had to prepare a booth to give the judges an insight into the club, which simply outlined the great voluntary aspect of the club.

Galway mosque damaged in shocking break-in last night

An investigation is ongoing after a serious amount of damage was caused to the Galway Ahmadiyya Mosque last night.

It has been reported that the mosque is now riddled with broken furniture and glass from broken windows, with significant damage reportedly done to prayer rooms.

In addition, computer equipment was also damaged in the attack while CCTV recording equipment has been said to have been destroyed.

Its believed that Imam Noonan’s office was smashed up with their tricolour and family photos thrown out the window.

This is the second time that a particular mosque has been targeted by vandals, the last one being in June 2017.

Faheem Noonan, son of Iman Ibrahim Noonan published a video of the significant damage done in the attack on Facebook.

Along with the video he said that “Too long I have been seeing the growth of racism violence and aggression against us. I myself live by our motto LOVE FOR ALL HATRED FOR NONE.”

“Please let’s stand together and stop this once and for all. What’s next for the Muslim community, are they going to burn our mosque down or even god forbid hurt us or our loved ones.”

Chairperson of the Galway Anti Racism Network, Joe Loughnane described the incident as “shocking”.

“Whoever it was went from room to room destroying the Mosque as they went.”

The Galway Anti Racism Network are organizing a solidarity vigil outside the mosque this evening at 9:30pm.

The Event Industry Awards celebrate excellence and showcase the very highest standards in Ireland’s event industry.

“This would not have been possible without the huge support from a wide range of local, regional and national agencies who came together to plan and stage this large scale event.”

“Thanks also to our festival organiser Arcana, our suppliers and to the media who have shown great support for SeaFest, year on year.”

“Also a big thanks to our volunteers, and the people and businesses of Galway – we couldn’t have done it without you.”

SeaFest 2018 was held in Galway Harbour, and attracted 103,416 festival-goers and generated €6.5 million for the city’s tourism industry.

Global event specialists, Arcana, were appointed event managers and worked with the Marine Institute and 16 local, regional and national organisations and agencies to stage the three-day festival.

This year saw SeaFest migrate south, taking place in Cork from June 7 – 9.

Cork will play host to SeaFest again in 2020 and 2021.
