Galway Daily courts Man charged in connection

A Galway man in his late 30s faces trial for allegedly sending a sexually explicit photo to a teenage girl.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court this week.

He was charged last July with sending sexually explicit material to a child under the age of 17 using information and communication technology under Section 8(2) of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017.

Sgt Cathal Rodgers told the court last November that it will be alleged that in September of 2020 the man sent a message to a then 16 year old girl that age is “only a number” and sent her a photo of his penis.

The Director of Public Prosecutions had indicated on that occasion that the case could only be dealt with at the District Court in the event of a guilty plea.

This week the court heard that the man is pleading not guilty to the charge.

Judge Fahy adjourned the case to March for consent from the DPP for a book of evidence.

Reporting restrictions imposed by the court barring publication of the man’s identity at this time were also reaffirmed.

The latest season of Laochra Gael has proved hugely popular so far on TG4, and former Galway footballer Kieran Fitzgerald will be the focus of this Thursday’s (10 February) episode.

Laochra Gael, now in its 20th series, features six Laochra with genuine star quality, and it reveals deeper, fresh and sometimes unexpected insights into the lives of these icons.

While their sporting careers continue to provide the backdrop to the story, the series travels well beyond the four white lines.

Kieran Fitzgerald burst onto the scene in 2001, winning the All Ireland and an All Star at just 20 years of age.

A few years later, he was dealt a crushing blow when his girlfriend, Máiréad Meehan, lost her battle with cancer.

Under a cloud of grief following Máiréad’s passing, Kieran’s love for the game declined. He eventually found rejuvenation with his club, Corofin, performing heroics to win an extraordinary three Club All Irelands in a row in his late thirties.

Urgent action needed as over 600 patients on hospital trolleys nationally

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has called for urgent action today as trolley figures soared to 603, the highest number of patients on trolleys since 4 February 2020.

Seventy people are on trolleys at Galway’s hospitals – 46 at University Hospital Galway and 24 at Portiuncula Hospital.

INMO General Secretary, Phil Ní Sheaghdha, said that the number of patients without a bed in our hospitals today is simply unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

She described the fact that so many patients are on trolleys while COVID is still a feature in hospitals as “inexcusable”.

“Since the first week of January in particular, the INMO has been calling for urgent action to ensure that trolley numbers do not rise to unsustainable levels, yet here we are barely the second week of February with a dangerous amount of patients on trolleys,” said Phil.

University Hospital Limerick has the highest number of people on trolleys (71), follwed by Cork University Hospital (58), University Hospital Galway(46), Letterkenny University Hospital (44), St.Luke’s Kilkenny (44), Sligo University Hospital (43), St. Vincent’s University Hospital (37) and Portiuncula Hospital (24).

“We are calling for the Emergency Department Taskforce to be convened and for emergency measures to be deployed in the areas worst hit,” said Phil.

She said that we cannot allow the health service to revert to form and allow pre-COVID levels of overcrowding to become the norm once again in our hospitals. Patients and nursing staff deserve better.

“If non-emergency services need to be curtailed in order to allow the HSE and hospital groups to get a handle on out of control trolley figures then that must be done.

“It is not acceptable to our members to allow overcrowding become an out of control problem once again.”

Riverdance star to bring new show to Galway

Galway audiences are in for a treat next month when former Riverdance star Breandán de Gallaí takes his his new show “Walls Talk” to the Town Hall Theatre on March 15.

Breandán’s role as a principal dancer with Riverdance spanned more than seven years, touring the globe with numerous prestigious performances including dancing for King Hussein of Jordan, the Emperor of Japan and Princess Diana.

Inspired by the phrase ‘if these walls could talk’, “Walls Talk” features de Gallaí’s mesmerising solo dance routines set against songs from the golden era of jazz and blues, performed live on stage by jazz singer Gina Boreham.

Speaking ahead of the tour, de Gallaí is encouraging audiences to come and be inspired.

“We’re hugely excited to be presenting this work in Galway, particularly at a time when Ireland is emerging from Covid-19 restrictions and the power of live performance has been largely absent from our lives for over two years,” he said.

“The show explores the notion of memory recorded in the material world around us. The narrative is told through the movement of the body and audiences will be wowed by Gina’s Live renditions of the jazz and blues classics.

“We hope to inspire audiences and challenge preconceptions of what dance can be”.

A local Senator has said he is deeply concerned after ‘Friends of the Irish Environment’ decided to seek a judicial review of the decision to grant planning permission for the Galway City Ring Road.

Senator Seán Kyne said that the group is certainly not friends of the people of Galway city who are stuck in traffic on a daily basis.

“They are not friends of the people who have to suffer delays in getting to hospital appointments, work, college and school,” he said.

“They are, ironically, not friends of the plan to improve public transport in Galway which needs extra capacity on the roads and river crossings across the city which the GCRR would give.

“And finally, they are not friends of the people of Connemara who find it more and more difficult to get to and from destinations beyond Galway City.”

Senator Kyne said that the decision to appeal this permission will put the future of the City in ‘extended limbo’ while we wait for a decision.

“While I accept the group’s right to appeal, it goes against the wishes of the vast majority of the city and county who recognise that if we are to grow and develop the regional capital for the West, the GCRR is a fundamental building block in that plan, and, in the Galway Transport Strategy, drawn up by both Galway Local Authorities and the National Transport Authority,” added the Fine Gael Senator.

COVID-19: 3,975 PCR-confirmed cases reported

There have been a further 8,453 total cases of COVID-19 reported by health officials today.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has notified an additional 3,975 PCR-confirmed cases today.

In addition, a further 4,478 positive antigen tests registered through the HSE portal have been reported.

As of this morning there are 643 people in Ireland hospitalised with COVID-19, of whom 86 are in the ICU.

Over the weekend there were 6,260 PCR-confirmed and 4,717 Antigen test cases reported on Saturday.

Sunday saw 4,933 PCR-confirmed cases and 3,803 positive Antigen tests reported.

The COVID-19 data hub provides detailed information about the disease in the community, including the rollout of the booster campaign.

Galway public urged to have their say on protecting water quality

People in Galway are being urged to have their say on protecting water quality in county rivers through public online meetings starting soon.

A number of open meetings are being organised in the coming weeks as part of a public consultation on the draft River Basin Management Plan.

The Local Authorities Water Programme (LAWPRO) plan to hold a total of 62 public online meetings to discuss the plan and its implications.

At these virtual meetings, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from LAWPRO representatives on the factors affecting water quality in their local area, with an opportunity for local stakeholders and members of the public to share their views.

Minister for Local Government Darragh O’Brien said that more needs to be done to protect water quality “as a matter of urgency”, and that this plan sets out ambitious plans for improvements.

“Extensive engagement on this plan is already underway with stakeholders and I am asking the public to make their views count on this important issue.”

Four meetings will take place to cover waterways in Galway over the course of late February and March, broken down by municipal districts and catchments.

The first of those will be for the Galway City & Tuam MDs, the Corrib Catchment, taking place on February 22.

The second, for the Loughrea and Athenry/Oranmore MDs will discuss the Galway Bay South Catchment on February 24.

On March first people in the Connemara MD can hear about and discuss the plans impact on the Galway Bay North/Erriff/Clew Bay Catchments.

And finally, the last meeting for the Ballinasloe, Roscommon, and Athlone MDs on March 8 will address the Upper & Lower Shannon Catchments.

All of the meetings will take place at 7:30pm. The full list, and the links to register for them, can be found online here.

The draft River Basin Management Plan sets out an increased ambition for water quality is managed in Ireland.

Tare 4,842 water bodies in Ireland, organised in 46 catchment areas and more than half of all waterbodies are considered to be at risk of not meeting Water Framework Directive objectives by 2027.

Some of the factor affecting water quality include wastewater treatment (or lack), agriculture, physical changes, urbanisation, and climate change.

Minister of State Malcolm Noonan added “By getting involved, members of the public will be helping to shape the overall management of Ireland’s rivers, lakes and streams.”

“In recent years, we have made substantial progress in how we manage our water services and how we work together to protect and improve water quality, but challenges remain and we have much more to do.”

The full public consultation on the draft River Basin Management Plan will run until March 31. Members of the public or interested parties can make submissions online at www.gov.ie/draftRBMP.

Garda appeal after another arson attack in Ballybane

Gardaì are appealing for witnesses after an arson attack outside a house in Castlepark, Ballybane on Sunday night.

This is the second time in the past week that Gardai have been called to horrific arson in Castlepark.

Gardaí received a report of a car set on fire outside a house in the Castle Park area of Ballybane shortly before 11.30pm on Sunday, February 6.

A front window in the house was also broken around the same time.

Four people were in the house at the time but were uninjured.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Castle Park area yesterday evening between 10pm and midnight and who may have observed unusual activity in the area to make contact with them.

An Garda Síochána would also like to talk to anyone who has video footage in this locality, including dash cam footage, covering a period from 10pm and midnight.

Last Thursday, January 3 there was a horrific arson attack at a house in Castlepark with four people inside, three of them children, though none were injured.

On the spot fines doubled for several parking offences

On the spot fines for a number of parking offences have doubled as of the start of this month, with new regulations in effect.

The Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan gave nitixe last December that Fixed Charge Notices were to go up for the following offences:

Parking a vehicle on a footpath, a grass margin or a median strip.
Parking a vehicle in a cycle track where traffic sign number RUS 009, RUS 058 or RUS 059 is provided.
Parking a vehicle in a bus lane or on a bus only street.

The fines for these offences have doubled from €40 to €80, rising to €120 if not paid within 28 day.

These new rules have come into effect as if February 1.

Visiting by appointment reintroduced at UHG & Merlin Park

Visiting by appontment only has been reintroduced at UHG and Merlin Park Hospital the Saolta Group has confirmed today.

From today, visits to patients at UHG and Merlin Park Hospital can be made by appointment, and in limited numbers and time periods.

Access for visiting is limited to one person, per patient per day within the following times:

2pm – 3pm
6pm – 7pm

Visits must be pre-arranged by family members / visitors, who should contact the relevant ward or unit in advance.

Visitors are requested to keep the time they spend as short as is practical.

Children should not visit the hospital at this time unless agreed in advance, on compassionate grounds, with the ward manager.

In line with current national guidance in relation to visiting hospitals, visitors will be asked to produce their EU Digital COVID Certificate or HSE COVID-19 Vaccination Record or other proof of immunity at the entrance.

Visitors may be asked to show some photo ID to prove that the proof of immunity is theirs.

There are exemptions from the requirement for the EU Digital COVID Certificate or HSE COVID-19 Vaccination Record or other proof of immunity on compassionate grounds.

Visitors will be required to wear a surgical mask and perform good hand hygiene regularly during their visit to the hospital.

Anyone planning to visit the hospital is asked to delay their visit if they have any symptoms of COVID-19, have been in contact with anyone with COVID-19 or are awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test.

There are separate arrangements in place for access to the maternity department for nominated support partners.

The reinstatement of an exemption allowing farmers to burn green waste during several months of the year has been welcomed.

Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice said that he was glad to see that the government have heeded the calls of the farming sector, and reinstated this exemption.

Under the Waste Management (Prohibition of Waste Disposal by Burning) Regulations 2009 it is illegal to burn household, garden, commercial or industrial waste.

An exemption had previously existed specifically for farmers, allowing them to burn waste from September 1 to February 28.

However, there was some concern when this lapsed at the start of 2022, but Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue told the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine that Minister Eamon Ryan would be reintroducing the exemption.

Deputy Fitzmaurice said that burning such vegetative waste is “practical tool” for farmers, and that the exemption is needed when no other alternative exists.

“It includes co-operation between farmers, local authorities and the fire service and is only allowed to occur during a prescribed period.

“There was no value in permanently removing the exemption under the legislation for farmers and it is good to see the relevant ministers and departments listening to reason on the matter

U2 frontman Bono has released a special edition single ‘Crazy Mountain’ for veteran broadcaster Charlie Bird to support his Climb With Charlie campaign.

On Saturday, April 2, Charlie Bird will climb Croagh Patrick in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta.

Due to Charlie’s Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis, the climb will be an immense challenge, but he is determined to do it to highlight the vast mountains so many people have to climb in their everyday lives due to severe illness, physical and mental.

To support his fundraising Climb With Charlie campaign, Bono released dedicated ‘Crazy Mountain” – a special edit of U2 song “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight” last week.

The ‘Crazy Mountain’ edit, is a new mix of the song I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight’ from U2’s fifth studio album No Line On The Horizon (2009).

It received its global first preview on The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1 last Friday, and listeners heard Charlie’s new cloned voice for the first time as he introduced the track himself.

Commenting on this, Charlie said; ‘’This is an outstanding gesture. I am overjoyed and could not believe the message that I received from Bono.”

“He has been hugely supportive of the Climb With Charlie campaign, which aims to raise funds for two amazing charities, the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta.’’

Charlie Bird first met Bono in Washington DC when Bono was involved in a series of humanitarian visits to the US government. At the time, Charlie was RTÉ’s Washington Correspondent.

Due to Covid-19, health & safety, and ongoing environmental works on Croagh Patrick, the campaign cannot facilitate large numbers of people on Croagh Patrick on April 2.

Therefore, Charlie is encouraging people to climb or walk in their local area, be it climbing a mountain or a short walk in the local park, and to keep on climbing the mountains of their personal battles.

61 COVID patients in Galway’s hospitals

There are a total of 61 people in Galway hospitalised with COVID-19 between the city and Ballinasloe in the latest HSE figures.

As of Sunday evening there were 41 confirmed cases at University Hospital Galway, and 20 at Portiuncula Hospital.

At UHG the case numbers have gone back up by approximately a quarter in the 48 hours prior, but are still below the 55 that were there a week ago, when it had the most COVID cases in the country.

The inverse is true at Portiuncula, where the number of COVID-19 patients is unchanged in the past to days, but is more than twice as high as the 7 cases there the previous week.

The number of COVID patients in the ICU in Galway’s hospitals has also remained largely steady, with two each receiving intensive care in Galway and Ballinasloe.

The intensive care units at UHG and Portiuncula are both under extreme pressure, with no ICU beds as of counting on Sunday.

Nationwide there are 633 confirmed cases in Irish hospital, of whom x are in the ICU.

The 2022 Atlantic Bluefin Tuna catch-and-release survey is opening to experienced anglers this month to gather data on the prized fish.

In the past three years of the Tuna CHART (Catch and Release Tagging) programme, more than 1,100 of these giants have been successfully tagged and released.

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea and is much sought after by anglers for its large size, able to reach up 4m in length and 600kg in weight.

This programme is meant to support scientific research by providing more information about the abundance and migratory patterns of the bluefin in our coastal waters.

The largest tuna tagged to date in the programme was 2.75m, weighing an estimated 372kg

Chartered skippers are being invited to apply for the 2022 survey, which will run from July 1 to November 12 this year.

In 2022, a maximum of 25 authorisations may be granted to qualifying angling charter vessel skippers around the Irish coast.

Authorised skippers will be required to have high specification rods, reels and line in advance of the open season in order to ensure that the fish is brought alongside the vessel to be measured and tagged in the water.

Experienced charter skippers are being invited to apply to join the 2022 Tuna CHART programme between February 14 – 28 by filling out an application form online at www.fisheriesireland.ie/bluefin.

The CHART programme is run by Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Oranmore based Marine Institute in partnership with government departments.

Elderly man in critical condition after vicious assault by gang during burglary

An elderly man who was the victim of a horrendous assault by a group of men during an burglary in the west of Ireland has deteriorated, and is now in critical condition.

Thomas Niland, a 73 year old bachelor, had to crawl from his home to get help after a gang of three men attacked him at home on the evening of January 18.

He was at home watching TV in Skreen, Co. Sligo around 6pm. when three masked men forced their way into his home, attacked, and robbed him.

Tom, who is the sole resident of his house, answered a knock to his front door and was immediately and viciously assaulted and a small sum of money was stolen.

He was left with serious injuries to his head and body, but managed to crawl from his home and alert passing motorists. Gardaí were then alerted by his neighbors.

The elderly man was taken to Sligo University Hospital, where Gardaí say his condition has deteriorated, and he is now in critical condition, and on life support.

It is believed that the attackers arrived in a car, which reversed into the driveway of Tom’s house. It is not known at this time, if any person remained in the car during the course of the attack.

A Garda family liaison officer was appointed to Tom’s family immediately after the incident & An Garda Síochána continues to support his family at this time throughout their ordeal.

A large scale investigation was launched, with a team of detectives and Gardaí operating out of an incident room set up for this case.

A number of Checkpoints in the immediate aftermath of this aggravated burglary and house to house enquiries in the area yielded some information.

Gardaí say that hours of CCTV footage have been recovered, multiple statements taken, and that multiple lines of inquiry are being followed, including based on forensic evidence.

In a briefing today Superintendent Mandy Gaynor said that no stone will be left unturned in this investigation.

“There are people out there who know who was involved in this aggravated burglary and serious assault on an elderly man in his home.”

“Thomas Niland and his family deserve to have these criminals who carried out this heartless act brought to Justice.”

Gardaí are appealing for any person with any information on this vicious and cowardly aggravated burglary and assault on Tom to contact them immediately.

Gardaí are appealing to every person who was driving along the N59 (Sligo/ Ballina Road), in the Skreen area, on Tuesday 18th January between 4pm – 8pm, who may have dashcam or any other video footage to contact investigating Gardaí.

They are also appealing for any person, who noticed any activity by persons or vehicles which drew their attention, in the wider N59 Skreen locality to contact them with that information, whether you think it is related to this investigation or not.

Galway Daily soccer Galway United announce two new signings

Galway United has announced two exciting new signings this weekend, with the addition of defender Oisin O’Reilly, and the versatile Edward McCarthy.

O’Reilly is a high-intensity centre-back, who is coming to Eamonn Deacy Park from Athlone Town.

He is the latest of a number of highly impressive defenders who have been on trial for the Tribesmen during the pre-season period.

Speaking to the club media team, he said that he’s “very excited” to get the season going at such a big club, and is aiming to see United make the Premiere Division.

“As a club, we definitely should be aiming for promotion, it’s a tough league this year but with the lads that we have in that changing room, we should be pushing for promotion.”

“For myself, I just want to get settled, get games under my belt, and hopefully have a good place in the team. I play a lot of positions; I wear my heart on my sleeve and have a lot of energy.”

Edward McCarty is a highly adaptable player, who has played as a midfielder, winger and full-back for Treaty United, where he made 21 appearances.

The 20 year old comes to Galway United following a short spell at Limerick junior side Regional United.

Following an impressive trial with United in pre-season, McCarthy was delighted to sign for John Caulfield’s side.

“I am looking forward to the start of the season, it was ideal for me to join the full-time setup. I will enjoy the step up to League of Ireland again and hopefully we can do well”

“I will work hard and give 110% every game, hopefully we can get the reward of promotion at the end of the season.”
