Galway’s two main colleges are among the partners leading a €1 million project to get more people in the region into higher education.

The “WNW Connect” initiative aims to ensure that more young people from disadvantaged areas in the west and northwest get into, and complete, third level education.

NUI Galway and GMIT make up half of the participating colleges, along with Sligo IT and Letterkenny IT.

Dr Seamus Morrissey, Project Manager, West/North-West Higher Education Cluster, says; “This initiative will make a positive impact and increase opportunities for progression to third-level in all our counties.”

“We will work with community organisations and schools to support students from under-represented groups where there isn’t a tradition of third level participation.”

“These new pathways into third-level education help transform the lives of future students and their families.”

WNW Connect will be delivered through the Access Offices in the four colleges and run until 2024.

Programmes and workshops with students will focus on mentoring and pathways to college initiatives.

Galway Daily weather Rough weekend forecast as weather warning issued by Met Eireann

Even as we’re currently dealing with damaging winds brought by Storm Dudley today, Met Eireann is already warning people to batten down the hatches for Storm Eunice.

A status yellow weather warning for wind, rain, and snow has been issued for all of Ireland on Friday.

“Storm Eunice will track over Ireland on Thursday night and on Friday bringing very strong winds and falls of heavy rain, sleet and snow.”

“Some disruption is likely along with a possibility of coastal and spot flooding,” the warning states.

Status Yellow and Orange marine warnings have also been issued for all Irish Coastal waters on Friday, where winds are expected to reach storm force 10 in the south.

Met Eireann has said that these weather warnings for Storm Eunice will be updated on Thursday morning.

Galway is currently dealing with the effects of Storm Dudley, with a wind warning in place until 11:30pm tonight.

Damaging winds gusting up to 110km/hr are expected today, with the possibility of coastal flooding on the Atlantic Coast.

National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management crisis management team have met with local authorities and Met Eireann and the OPW to prepare for these storms this week.

Galway Daily news Road closures and serious power outages are affecting the seafront area of Galway City this afternoon due to damage from Storm Fergus.

Weather warnings for Storm Dudley, which is to rage over Ireland for the coming day, have come into force this afternoon.

Galway and all of Ireland are under a status yellow wind warning issued by Met Eireann until 11:30 on Wednesday night.

Westerly winds associated with Storm Dudley will reach mean speeds of 50 – 65km/hr over the course of the day.

Gusts will reach damaging speeds of up to 110km/hr, stronger still on exposed coasts and on high ground.

A combination of high tide and strong winds will lead to a possibility of flooding on Atlantic coasts.

Occasional heavy rain will also bring a possibility of spot flooding Met Eireann has said.

This weather warning was originally issued to be in force until midday on Thursday, but was updated on Wednesday morning.

A marine Gale Warning is also in force for all Irish coasts, with winds to reach gale force 8 or strong gale force 9 today and overnight.

Storm Dudley is just one of one of two named storms which is due to hammer Ireland this week.

After a brief respite on Thursday, Storm Eunice will track over Ireland on Thursday night and on Friday.

Boil Water Notice remains in place after two weeks

Galway Daily news Upgrade works to cause water outages in Gort

A Boil Water Notice affecting almost 2,000 homes in the Gort area remains in place after two weeks.

Irish Water issued the alert for properties on the Gort Public Water Supply on February 2 following a mechanical fault at the treatment plant.

Approximately 2,800 Customers are advised to boil their water before use and continue to do so until further notice.

Alternative water supplies in the form of bulk tankers are in place at Church Street and in the Punchpowl Estate on the Ennis Road.

The tankers may be offsite for short periods if refilling is required during the day.

People are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tankers and to boil and cool the water before consumption as a precautionary measure.

Bottled water will be provided for vulnerable customers who are registered on this supply in adherence with current HSE advice.

Ronan Daly of Irish Water said that replacement equipment is needed before repair works can take place at the plant.

“We wish to apologise to all of the homes and businesses impacted by this Boil Water Notice.”

“We have carried out an assessment of the damaged filter and are currently awaiting replacement equipment through a specialist contractor.”

“Irish Water will continue to liaise with the HSE and EPA throughout the duration of the works at the plant.”

“Our team will issue regular updates to the communities impacted by this notice as we continue our work to lift it as quickly as possible.”

Water must be boiled for drinking, drinks made with water, preparation of food not cooked prior to eating, brushing teeth, or making ice.

The Seanad100 – Minority Voices, Major Changes programme includes an exhibition, lectures, a TV documentary, themed tours of Leinster House, Culture Night events, and more.

Galway Senator Aisling Dolan described Mary Robinson, one of the speakers who launched the programme, as a “true inspiration”, with 20 years service as a Senator before she became President.

“Mary spoke about how we have the space in the Seanad to debate issues and right now the most urgent of all is Climate Change.”

“For me, I know that it is a privilege to have a position where I can represent where I come from and speak with a strong voice for the West of Ireland,” Aisling Dolan said.

“Being involved in the review of legislation and dealing with emergency legislation all throughout the lockdown, to support people during the pandemic.”

One of the other main speakers at the launch of the centenary was David Norris, the longest continuously serving Senator in the house, and a well known advocate for gay rights.

The Cathaoirleach, Senator Mark Daly, said “Minority Voices, Major Changes perfectly sums up the role Seanad Éireann has played and continues to play in Irish life.”

“Over the last century the Seanad has been a platform for those who have championed and advocated for marginal and minority voices and in many cases leading to what became major changes in our society.”

When the Upper Chamber was first established in 1922 with the creation of the Irish Free State, there were four female Senators. Now, 40% of its members are women.

The programme events for the centenary includes:

City Council approves plan to knock derelict buildings for apartments

Galway City Council has given the green light for the demolition of derelict buildings in Knocknacarra to make way for blocks of apartments.

Leadlane (Cappagh) Limited has received planning permission to demolish two buildings on the Cappagh Road, and build 24 apartments in their place.

The complex will consist of two blocks of duplex apartments, with 12 homes in each building.

The initial plans were for a total of 30 units in three blocks, but this was reduced at the request of the city council after concerns were raised about excessive plot density.

The complex will be served by 30 car parking spaces and 15 bicycle spaces, and a new entry point onto the Cappagh Road will be created.

Roughly half of the 7,006sqm site is zoned for recreational use, and no building is planned to take place on that portion of the land.

A large portion of the land, facing away from the main road, will be landscaped into green areas to the rear of the apartments.

The council also requested the addition of a play area for children in the landscaped portion of the site, and a pedestrian an cycling connection to the adjacent Cappagh Park.

Planning permission was granted by the city council with a total of 28 conditions attached.

The Friends of the Irish Environment, one of the groups seeking a judicial review of the N6 Galway Ring Road, has said that it is irrational to be building roads during a climate crisis.

The FIE was granted leave for a judicial review of the ring road on Monday by High Court Justice Humphreys.

They had initially brought the challenge last week, but it was adjourned to allow Minister for the Environment Richard Bruton to be added as a notice party.

Helena Murphy of FIE said that the answer to Galway’s traffic problems lie in measures such as improved public transport, along with an “ongoing push” for pedestrianisation and bicycle lanes, instead of “more and bigger” roads.

“This project totally flies in the face of all of our environmental targets and undermines our compliance with the Habitats Directive as well as our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

“Developing roads in a climate crisis is just irrational, no matter how much one seeks to greenwash it,” Helena Murphy said.

FIE claims in its legal challenge to the ring road that An Bord Pleanála failed to act in a manner consistent with Ireland’s climate commitments in law.

The group also claims that the Bord cannot have made a valid determination of whether the ring road would affect sensitive habitats, due to a lack of site specific objectives.

The Galway Race Committee is also seeking a judicial review of the ring road as their stables in Ballybrit will be lost.

It said that appropriate mitigation for this loss was not provided by An Bord Pleanála, despite the recommendation of the Bord inspector.

The 18km dual carriageway bypass of Galway City proposes to connect the M6 near the Coolagh Roundabout with Barna.

The €600 project would involve building a new bridge over the Corrib, as well as multiple tunnel sections, including under Galway Racecourse.

Planning permission was granted for the project by An Bord Pleanála last December after many delays.

The RNLI is advising people to exercise extreme caution along the coastline this week, with two back to back named storms on the way.

Storm Dudley is due to hit Ireland on Wednesday afternoon, bringing damaging winds throughout the day, followed by Storm Eunice.

Galway and all of Ireland is covered by a status yellow wind warning for a 24hr period from midday on Wednesday.

Winds are expected to gust up to 110km/hr, possibly stronger in exposed coastal areas, and there is also the likelihood of flooding in coastal areas due to wind and high tide.

Samantha Hughes from the RNLI said “The expected storms could make our seas treacherous, increasing the risk for those visiting the coast around the UK and Ireland.”

“So, whether you are walking, running or cycling at the coast, please be extra responsible and avoid taking unnecessary risk or entering the water.”

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) crisis management team held a virtual meeting with Met Éireann, the OPW, local authorities and other agencies in preparation for Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice.

After a brief respite the current weather models are predicting that Storm Eunice will track up over Ireland later on Thursday night and during the early part of Friday.

This will bring with it the potential for some severe winds countrywide, and the possibility of snow in the northern part of the country.

NDFEM is advising people to stay away from all coastal areas for the duration of the Met Éireann warnings.

Galway County Council has been allocated more than €37 million for maintenance and improvements to local and regional roads this year.

The package for Galway in 2022 includes just over €1 million earmarked for climate change adaptation and resilience works, €630,000 for bridge rehabilitation, and €250,000 for work on the Athenry relief road.

One of the single largest investments is €1 million for improvements to the R332 at Kilbannon.

The funding for Galway is part of €597 million for local and regional roads nationwide, an increase of 4% this year.

Galway TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport Hildegarde Naughton that €12m funding nationwide includes over 300 projects specifically targeting road safety.

“This year we will spend over €26 million more than last year on our local and regional roads, demonstrating Government’s commitment to ensure a strong, safe and sustainable roads network.”

“I am particularly happy to see continued investment of some €55 million, and good progress, on new strategic regional and local roads projects right across the country.”

“This also includes provision for funding to continue a signage programme which includes signage to support lower speed limits in housing areas, rural speed limit signage and a ‘safe passing’ cycle sign.”

The funding package will allow approximately 3,100kms of roads to be maintained and 2,550kms to be strengthened.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said that these funds supplement what local authorities spend on their roads themselves, and “do not represent the total investment in regional and local roads for this year.”

GMIT will be holding a virtual open day for potential postgraduate students this week.

More than 40 different postgraduate course in the areas of business, science & computing, engineering, and more will be showcased this Thursday.

Staff, researchers and postgraduate students will be available to answer questions at the live event which will be formally opened by the President of GMIT, Dr Orla Flynn, and addressed by heads of different disciplines.

Margaret Mulchrone, GMIT Graduate Studies Coordinator said “We are really looking forward to connecting with people interested in pursuing a postgraduate programme, going in a new direction or deepening their knowledge in their existing career journey.”

“We have an exciting line up with over 20 members of our academic team presenting on their postgraduate courses on the night.”

“By using a virtual platform we are able to reach out to a wider national and international audience and many of our current students are from EU countries and overseas,” she added.

Due to industry demand, the range of postgraduate courses at GMIT has expanded in recent years to include a dedicated department of Sports, Exercise and Nutrition.

People Before Profit Galway has called for a mass public housing programme, saying that we need to stop relying on the private rental market to meet Galway’s housing needs.

The party’s Galway representative Adrian Curran made the comments after a recent Daft.ie report showed rents are still rising at extortionate rates across the city.

Prices in the city are up 8.8% over the past year, with the average cost of a house now €1,504 a month.

Mr Curran called for the building of public homes on public land, and for these houses to be let at affordable prices, that working people can afford.

Curran also raised issue with the growing presence of vulture funds and big developers in the city.

“We are all aware of the scourge of property and land hoarders within the city, who buy up large tracts of housing, leaving much of it vacant to drive up rents,” he said.

“Vulture funds such as IRES REIT see this and are enticed to enter the Galway housing market as a result. We need to ban these toxic organisations from the housing sector once and for all, and take any of their vacant properties into public ownership.”

The Daft.ie report also showed that rents in Galway County have risen 19% over the past 13 months.

Curran said that this shows housing is not just an urban issue, rural communities are also being affected.

“There is a dearth of affordable homes available in rural Ireland, with much of the available stock let on sites such as Airbnb.

“We need further regulation and restrictions on short-term lets in order to prioritise those who need homes most.”

Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell has criticised Minister Michael McGrath for pushing ahead with his own Bill to regulate lobbying, rather than support a Sinn Féin Bill which is at Committee stage.

Sinn Féin’s Regulation of Lobbying Bill (2020) was brought forward by Deputy Farrell and Pearse Doherty TD, and is awaiting its pre-legislative scrutiny report.

Deputy Farrell said that she is ‘disappointed, although hardly surprised’ that the Minister has decided to proceed with his own Bill.

“This was an opportunity to work together with the opposition and to close the existing loopholes in our lobbying regime,” said the Galway West TD.

“The weaknesses in the current regulation of lobbying framework were brought into sharp focus following the controversy of former Junior Finance Minister Michael D’Arcy’s attempt to join the lobbying organisation for the Irish Funds Industry, seemingly in breach of the ‘cooling off period’.

“As reported by RTÉ, the Minister’s Bill will emulate a number of the measures of our Bill, however it will go for a shorter 12 month ‘cooling off’ period, than the 24 month requirement we are calling for.”

Deputy Farrell said that “nobody is served by a revolving door between politics and big business”.

“Minister McGrath and this government claim they love competition in the marketplace, and yet a revolving door situation is corrosive to competition,” she said.

“It allows people to trade on their former insider influence to distort competition. You would think that this would be a concern for this government, but apparently not.”

As farming enters its busiest six-month period from April to September, a new TG4 series Contractors will look at the fascinating stories of seven contractors and their families.

One of the farmers to feature in the documentary series is Peadar Seoighe from Corr na Móna in Galway, who has been in the contracting business for around six years.

From lime spreading to topping and spraying rushes, Peadar has built an agri-contracting business based upon the size of enterprise in the hills of Corr na Móna along with his competent sheep dog called Lindsey, who helps him get the job done!

The seven-part series explores the working lives and personal narratives of seven families, providing a unique practical and personal insight into contemporary life in rural Ireland.

The series highlights their professional challenges, the high and lows of their daily routine and their hopes and dreams, presenting a no-holds barred portrait of 7 extraordinary crews for hire – all members of an agricultural sub-economy without which farming would not be possible.

NUIG shares Government funding for ENLIGHT University Alliance

NUI Galway has welcomed Government support for the ENLIGHT University Alliance, which will increase opportunities for students and staff to study, learn and work across Europe.

NUI Galway has secured funding of almost €445,000 from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) to progress the new pan-European teaching, learning and research initiative over the next two and half years.

ENLIGHT gives universities the platform to create a new type of ‘campus’ where students and staff have increased opportunities for international study, training, teaching, research and sharing of services.

NUI Galway’s Vice President International, Professor Becky Whay, said that the alliance exemplifies the University’s commitment to openness and diversity.

“Our partnership in a European University Network puts us at the forefront of designing models for cross European collaboration, education, research and growth,” said Professor Whay.

“This funding support from the HEA is critical to our ability to optimise the advantages that membership of this alliance opens up for us – for our students who wish to travel and learn throughout Europe and for our staff who wish to partner with fellow academics and professional services.”

The Government funding will strengthen NUI Galway’s participation in ENLIGHT and support student exchanges and staff collaboration and engagement.

The ENLIGHT alliance includes NUI Galway; Comenius University, Bratislava (Slovakia); University of Groningen (Netherlands); University of Bordeaux (France); Gent University (Belgium); University of Tartu (Estonia); University of Gottingen (Germany); University of the Basque Country; and Uppsala University (Sweden).

ENLIGHT aims to collaboratively transform higher education, addressing societal challenges and promoting equitable quality of life, sustainability and external engagement with the communities of the partner universities.

NUI Galway President and current chair of the ENLIGHT Alliance, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, said NUI Galway is delighted with the Government support to strengthen their participation in the ENLIGHT alliance.

“All nine of the universities in ENLIGHT are based outside of capital cities which gives us a particular perspective on the world and community,” he said.

“Together, we are regional drivers of development, working closely to tackle societal challenges and see international ambition as a means of maximising regional impact.
