Council approves expansion of Gort Community School

0
Galway daily news Three Galway schools join Creative Clusters collaboration

Galway County Council has approved plans for the construction of a standalone extension to Gort Community School.

The Board of Management at the community school has been granted planning permission for a building with six new classrooms, and a total floor space of 550m².

The new building is going on land that is currently car parking for the school, and some grassland next to the pitch.

Among the six conditions attached to the grant of planning permission, the county council stated that along with the nine parking spaces for this building, the nine lost must also be provided for on the site.

An archaeological impact statement was prepared with this planning application, due to the site’s proximity to two recorded ringforts.

“There is some potential for the project to have an impact on below ground archaeological features or deposits, although the construction of the car park, pitches and other elements of the school complex may already have caused extensive disturbance,” the report stated.

To mitigate this risk, the county council added a requirement to the planning permission that an archaeologist must assess the site before work begins, and monitor any sub-surface works.

Rainbow Riches: Why Brits Love It?

0

Rainbow Riches is one of the most appealing games you can play at the moment. Some of you will need a demo mode, others want to play the slot in their favourite casino while the third will seek casinos with Rainbow Riches or other Megaways slots available on NonGamStopSlots.com. All of these are possible and ready for you. The game is developed by Barcrest brand and comes with impressive features and capabilities. There are a lot of things you should know about this particular slot.

Features of Rainbow Riches

This is a bit of a classic video slot that has 20 paylines and 5 reels to offer. There are 3 rows of symbols in the game and all of them are spectacular. The game uses leprechauns, pots of gold, rainbows and so much more. These are all symbols linked to Irish luck and one of the reasons why the game is so popular in the United Kingdom in general. Add excellent sound effects, even better animations, stunning gameplay and you can deduce why many gamblers love to play the game.

If you want to start playing the game, once it is loaded, use the + and- buttons to adjust the bet. You can choose lines and stakes and when ready click spin. There is autoplay mode in which the reels will spin automatically.

As aforementioned, symbols are great. The main symbol is the wild symbol that is represented as a golden coin. It can replace all other symbols except wishing well, leprechaun, and pot of gold. The wild symbol can form its own winning combinations. 5 of the kind will give you 10.000 credits.

Road to Riches is present as well. This is a bonus feature in which you will need to get 3 leprechaun symbols. Once this happens, a game will load a second screen and from there you will see a rod with different numbers. These are multipliers. The wheel of fortune is present as well. Spin the wheel, make a few steps as the wheel tells you, and collect your winnings. The feature is very simple to understand and looks great.

There is a second bonus as well. It is activated once you land Wishing Well symbols. You need 3 or more of the kind. This means you will be presented with the symbols, click on the one you like and it will give you a specific multiplier that will be applied to your winnings. It is an excellent feature that looks amazing.

Pots of Gold is the last feature. You need leprechaun symbols that will appear on reels 2, 3, and 4. Once you have them, you will see a second screen in which there will be one leprechaun and pots of gold that spin around him. You will see the arrow and it will show one pot of gold that brings you a multiplier. This multiplier will then be applied to your balance. With all 3 features you saw earlier, a player can win up to 500 times the stake which is impressive.

An interesting fact is that the game is relaxing, easy to play, and looks modern. All the symbols and the user interface are made using modern technology and they look perfect. Sounds will keep you occupied and pleased. In a nutshell, the slot allows you to explore Irish luck, play with leprechauns and pots of gold. All of these are great motives for those who want coins and want to win. RTP is 95% and it is considered as high. You can place 1 coin per payline. The slot is extremely popular, meaning you can play it almost anywhere. Yes, a demo version is available as well. Gamblers enjoy the slot on various devices and can play for hours thanks to the design and features.

Conclusion

Rainbow Riches is an amazing slot that deserves your full attention. They are popular games in the United Kingdom due to a simple reason. It is fun to play and can help you win big time.

Although it is loaded with features, all of them are simple as well and there are no complicated steps, processes, or anything else that may have a negative impact on gambling. UK players love this advantage and it is an additional reason why this game is extremely popular. You can find such games on sites with Gamban or GamStop or without.

Galway United eye back to back wins with Cabinteely game

0
Galway United v Cabinteely preview

Galway United are eyeing back to back wins, which have eluded them so far this League of Ireland season, when they face Cabinteely tomorrow.

The Tribesmen secured a last minute victory against Athlone Town last week, with a 94th minute goal from Padraic Cunningham putting United ahead after levelling Athlone’s early lead in the second half.

United manager John Caulfield said that Cabinteely are a hard-working that operate as a tight unit, and are always hard to beat. They are coming off their own 2-0 victory against Cork City.

United are currently in 6th place on the First Division table, now even on points with Athlone at 16, and just two points behind Cabinteely themselves, raising the stakes for tomorrow’s game.

“Cabinteely are always a hard-working team and always difficult to beat,” John Caulfield told the club’s media team.

“They went down to Cork last week and had a fantastic result. They are ahead of us on the table, we know they are a very solid and tight unit, who like to play on the counter-attack.”

“It was brilliant to get a late goal against Athlone Town last Friday to secure three important points. We know that we haven’t been able to put consecutive wins together. So that is a challenge we have to see can we turnaround.”

He added that it was pleasing to secure a win after coming from behind, the first time they’ve managed it this season, which provided a confidence boost to the team.

“The supporters gave us a great lift in the second half, the encouragement coming from the stands. To come back in the game after being one down and to beat another very good side. I know that type of performance is in the team, I’m now talking about our consistency. That is what we are trying to work on.”

Galway United and Cabinteely will meet at Eamonn Deacy Park tomorrow evening, with kick off at 7:45pm.

This will be Stephen Walsh’s last game watching from the sidelines before his three game suspension runs out, and Carlton Ubaezuonu has returned to the squad after a short-term injury.

Galway Daily news Pub staff member assaulted for not letting drunk patron in

Pubs that don’t serve food have been included in the new outdoor seating grant scheme which is now open for applications.

The grants are available to support businesses in the hospitality and tourism sector with enhancing their outdoor dining.

Galway East TD Seán Canney welcomed the inclusion of pubs without food in the scheme.

“The focus of this scheme is to provide a level of financial support to tourism and hospitality businesses, in our town and village centres, to purchase or upgrade equipment to provide additional outdoor seating and, therefore, increase their outdoor dining capacity for the summer of 2021,” said Deputy Canney.

“This scheme will financially assist and support independent tourism and hospitality business owners to create outdoor dining experiences in a regulated and accessible manner.

“All applicants will be required to comply with planning codes (including Section 254 licences), legislative requirements and other compliance requirements. The scheme is open to attractions, hotels, restaurants, cafes, public houses or other tourism and hospitality business establishments where food is sold for consumption on the premises.”

Man sentenced to three years in prison for coercive control of now former partner

0
galway daily courts Man charged with violent threats and arson

A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for the crime of coercive control against his now former wife this week.

Paul Harkin (49), formerly of Kilchreest, Loughrea was sentenced at Galway Circuit Court this week, where Judge Rory McCabe said that an immediate prison sentence was “necessary and unavoidable”.

The court heard the facts of the campaign of abuse Harkin waged to control his family, and a victim impact statement from his now former wife, last week, but final sentencing was put back to this week for the judge to consider expert reports.

Judge McCabe had indicated last week that the headline sentence for this crime was four and a half years, taking into account the gravity of the offence.

After considering factors in mitigation, such as his plea of guilty, expression of remorse, and intention to go live in Derry, he indicated that a three year sentence would be appropriate.

Harkin pleaded guilty back in January to a single count of knowingly and persistently engaging in behaviour that was controlling or coercive against a person who was then his spouse on a date between June 24 and August 13 of 2020, under Section 39 of the Domestic Violence Act 2018.

He had also been charged with multiple counts of assault causing harm, threats to kill, criminal damage, and cruelty to children. But the plea to the coercive control charge alone was accepted by the state on a full facts basis of the other charges, except for the child cruelty, which he denied.

The maximum penalty allowed under this newly created offence is five years imprisonment. Harkin was the first person in Galway, and just the third nationwide, to face sentence for the crime of coercive control.

Judge McCabe said that it was clear from the evidence heard last week that his former wife is still afraid of him, and that  at least one child is afraid that he would hurt their mother.

The judge noted that Harkin still contests some of the allegations made, saying that “He is rigid in his views, and brooks no opinion other than his own”.

A psychiatric report provided for the court said that Harkin lacked empathy, which led to him manipulating others, but that he had no mental illness and was fully responsible for his actions.

The probation services were similarly bleak, stating in their report that he was considered to be at a high risk of reoffending and future violence against his partner.

Judge McCabe said that there was no reasonable prospect for rehabilitation to take into account when structuring the sentence, ordering Harkin to serve the full three years.

He also ordered that Harkin will come under the supervision of the probation services for a period of one year after his release from prison. Additionally, in the year after his release, he is not to have any contact with the victims.

The 5 passive income ideas that every entrepreneur should try in 2021

0

The legendary investor Warren Buffett once famously declared ‘if you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die’.

While this statement sounds dramatic, finding a passive income – that is, a sideline that earns you money while you’re doing other things – is crucial to our long-term financial health.

Passive income has been around for decades, of course, with the likes of stock market investments and real estate to name just two, but the 21st century has brought new ways for us to make money while we sleep. Here are 5 of the best of them for this year.

Create an online course

To start your own business, or even hold down a full-time job, you need to have a skill that somebody will pay for. Knowledge is power, and nowadays creating an online course is a great way to make money from your expertise.

Sites such as Teachable and Udemy exist solely for helping you create and market your course, offering tutorials and case studies to put you on the right path. They don’t need to be conventional topics either: successful courses in the past have included the likes of ‘How to text a girl’ and even ‘Telepathically communicating with an animal’.

The best thing about them for entrepreneurs, though, is that they continue to pay for long after you put in that initial few hours’ effort, making them the ideal passive income stream.

Copy the traders

Investing in stocks and shares can appear daunting – often people feel like they need to have thousands in the bank to get involved, or that it’s too complicated.

The truth is that nowadays it only takes a small amount of money and a few clicks of a button to get started.

Trading apps such as eToro have a ‘copy trading’ option, where an algorithm lets you automatically copy the trades of experts. Most of the top traders achieve positive returns year after year, such as London-based Heloise Greef who has an average annual return of 20% since 2016.

Their expertise is vital here, as they know strategies to minimise risk, which makes it feel less like playing the lottery. There’s even a stop-loss option which you can put in, so that you stop copying their trades should your investment dip below a certain amount.

However, perhaps the best thing about this is that once you’ve set up your copy trades, which should only take around 10 minutes, you don’t need to do anything else. Just check the app every now and again if you feel like it.

Dropshipping

The best way to describe dropshipping is selling stock without getting your hands dirty. You act as the link between the buyer and supplier, like with a conventional store, but you don’t handle the products directly. In fact, you never even own the stock – you simply purchase as much as you need for orders then transfer it directly to a prepaid sale.

Another big plus is that it doesn’t take much capital to get up and running, as you’ll already have the money in hand – websites such as Shopify and Wix charge a standard amount to get your site started with them, offering guides and training.

You can get a dropshipping model set up today – you just need to select the products you think will sell, set up the site and wait for orders.

Blogging

If you’re a fan of writing, then you have what it takes to set up a blog. The easy part is setting it up – platforms such as WordPress have the process mapped out for budding bloggers, including picking a domain name and a webhosting service.

Marketing is a little trickier, but if you use social media every day for business or personal reasons, you’ll know your way around Twitter or Instagram to spread the word. LinkedIn is also an excellent place to let people know about your writing.

Perhaps hardest of all, though, is selecting a niche. If you write about popular topics, then it’ll be harder for you to get noticed. However, we can get around this by thinking of our slightly unusual interests, or maybe we do something unconventional for work which we can write about.

Getting regular readers to your blogs through SEO and high-quality content is when the money starts to roll in. You’ll be able to market certain products to your readers in return for a fee, meaning you’ll be earning cash even when your device is switched off.

Digital downloads

Information doesn’t have to come in the form of e-books and blogs. Smaller items, such as guides and checklists can still be popular depending on the topic.

Have you written a killer cover letter that has landed you your dream job? Sell it online. Created a beautiful design that makes people’s jaws drop? Put it on Etsy. Many websites exist for this purpose, you just need to list your product or service and include the right keywords. Market research is useful here to find out what people are looking for.

You can sell each item multiple times, which will keep that money coming in and it requires virtually zero cost.

Of course, teams such as Arkansas and Texas Tech failed to make the grade, despite having been fancied to do so.

If looking at the divisions that are to be represented, the SEC will lead the way in the College World Series 2021 and have the favorite to win the competition with Vanderbilt having been provided strong odds by Unibet Sports Indiana to retain their current title representing them, as well as Tennessee and Mississippi State.

Who has won the most College World Series?

When looking at the history of the College World Series, it is evident that there has been no other NCAA Division 1 Baseball team that has been more successful than the Southern California Trojans.

Although their last success came almost 25 years ago back in 1998, the baseball team have managed to acquire 12 titles in their history, which included a streak of six wins in seven years during the period of 1968 and 1974.

Vanderbilt are the current reigning champions and will be looking for their third title following the 2019 success, although Texas will likely be the team looking to stop them adding to it, should they meet in this year’s College World Series Final with the way the brackets have been determined.

New Galway City cycle parking in map goes live

0
galway daily news cycle bike parking in galway city

Galway City Council’s new online map showing the location of over 1,000 bike parking spaces across the city has gone live.

The map will allow cyclists to find their nearest parking spot and it will help the council identify places where more bike parking spaces are needed.

A total of 296 new cycle parking spaces were introduced in 2020 – an increase of 28% compared to 2019 and a further 66 cycle parking spaces were added in the first three months of this year.

The map will be updated as additional cycle parking is added, or where stands are relocated and Galway City Council is welcoming suggestions from cycling and accessibility advocacy groups.

When the map was announced last month, Kevin Jennings, Chairperson of Galway Cycling Campaign, said that not knowing where you can safely and conveniently park can deter you from choosing to hop on the saddle to a shop, café or business service.

“There  is clear evidence to show that cycle parking brings real benefits to businesses,” said Kevin.

“The retail spend per square metre for cycle parking is five times higher than the same area for car parking.

“There’s a bike boom across the city with people of all ages and abilities cycling everyday. And with cycle parking too.

“We’ve noticed lots of new racks at playgrounds across the city, outside shops like O’Connor’s Centra in Salthill, Face Hairdressers on Sea Road, near Eyre Square, and in the heart of the city such as outside Sally Longs on Upper Abbeygate Street.”

Suggestions can be sent to roads@galwaycity.ie – and the map can be viewed HERE

Plans for an extension of Craughwell National School have taken a step forward, as the OPW is now ready to formally appoint a contractor, with work to begin soon.

Concerns raised about future of Job Clubs

0
Galway Daily news Lack of Island specific group in LEADER programme criticised

Concerns have been raised about the future of Job Clubs as part of proposed changes to Employment Services.

Roscommon-Galway TD Claire Kerrane said that there are worrying updates following the launch of the Request for Tender for a new model employment services.

“Not only is the success of the Local Employment Services under threat,” said Deputy Kerrane, “we are now finding out that important Job Club services will likely no longer exist under the proposed changes.

“I raised the future of Job Clubs, which provide a crucial practical and individualised supports to those seeking employment, in Committee. The Minister advised that LES and Job Club will be merged, which means that this important drop-in service will no longer exist.”

The Sink Féin TD added that beore the tender was launched, it was said that those working in employment services would be ‘pleasantly surprised’ with the new model.

“Instead what has been put out for tender is worse than they could have imagined and continues to worsen as we find out more,” said Deputy Kerrane.

“The Minister stated the changes to these services are being made with those seeking employment in mind. If important supports like Job Clubs cease to be available, it is hard to see how the proposed model will do that.

“All of this is in addition to existing concerns that the new RES model is focused on profit over people.

“Various stakeholders have expressed worry that these changes will only serve to push those who need employment services most further away from the labour market. We cannot see this happen.”

Exhausted frontline healthcare workers need leave – Naughten

0
Galway Daily news Disappointment that no occupational injury benefits coming for Long Covid sufferers

Frontline healthcare workers who have been fighting the pandemic for 15 months need additional time off, Galway TD Denis Naughten has said.

Speaking in the Leaders Questions on Tuesday, Deputy Naughten said that in the past 15 months, frontline staff in the health service have dealt with three waves of COVID-19, and a cyber attack that has seriously hampered operations.

The Independent TD said that he first raised this issue of providing additional paid time off for frontline workers with the Taoiseach in July of last year.

“These people are now mentally and physically exhausted,” Denis Naughten said, “We must provide staff with time off because exhausted healthcare staff are a recipe for mistakes”.

“They have been selfless and the country owes them a great debt of gratitude. The Government must now recognise their efforts.”

He referenced the fact that the Scottish government made a pledge in December, that every member of the NHS and social care worker would receive a £500 COVID-19 bonus.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin responded that the government is examining options for recognising all frontline workers, not just those in the health service.

“However, we are not out of the pandemic yet and all our attention and focus are on making sure we continue with progress on the vaccination programme and the very positive impact the vaccination programme is having on the prevalence of the disease,” Micheál Martin said.

He added that focus must also be kept on monitoring variants, such as the Delta variant which has become so widespread in the UK, to ensure they do not undermine efforts made to control the pandemic to date.

Galway technology company CitySwift has signed a major deal worth millions of euro with transport company National Express in the UK.

National Express West Midlands – the biggest bus operator outside of London – will use CitySwift’s products to share the number of available seats on a stop-by-stop basis, helping people feel safer and avoid crowds.

Through this three year investment, CitySwift is also supporting National Express Group’s mission to be the UK’s most sustainable bus and coach company.

There are currently 1,300 National Express buses in the West Midlands and 150,000 passenger journeys per day.

Brian O’Rourke, CEO and co-founder of CitySwift said: “We’re really pleased that National Express chose to work with CitySwift.

“COVID-19 has forced the public transport sector to be at its most agile, which has meant the adoption of new working practices and technologies at a pace never before seen.

“The pandemic has accelerated the need for the sector to go through a digital transformation to understand how passenger demand will change and National Express is at the forefront of this, as they use our technology to ensure vehicle supply matches the demand.”

Chris Gibbens, Commercial Director, National Express West Midlands, said that National Express plans to be net-zero by 2030 and CitySwift is playing an important role in helping them achieve that.

“By enabling networks to optimise routes, stay on schedule, and avoid crowding, CitySwift effectively increases the number of people using our buses as well as providing a safe environment for them,” said Chris Gibbens.

“The pandemic has meant that we need to restore passenger confidence and ensure we put the right number of vehicles on the right routes at the right times to get people back on board, and CitySwift enables us to do just that.”

With the Commonwealth Games taking place from the 28th July – 8th August, 2022, CitySwift’s platform will also be supporting National Express West Midlands to help it efficiently and reliably transport visitors to and around the city of Birmingham.

The platform is currently live with 8,500 buses in over 35 cities across the UK, US and Europe.

For those in employment, the Government will fund 90% of the cost of a Springboard+ or HCI Pillar 1 course.

“As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, we will need to ensure that people have the skills they need,” said Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris.

“Springboard+ and the graduate conversion courses under the Human Capital Initiative provide a targeted response to skills needs, enabling people to upskill and reskill in areas of critical importance which have come to the fore as a result of COVID-19, including Cybersecurity, Virtual Reality, Health Innovation, and Logistics,” said Minister Harris.

“Programmes in Climate/Sustainability and Energy which are central to the Programme for Government are also being funded.”

Dr. Vivienne Patterson, Head of Skills and Engagement at the Higher Education Authority, said: “Springboard+ and HCI courses give people who are unemployed, those looking to return to work and people in employment a great opportunity to upskill or reskill – particularly in areas where there are skills shortages.

“We work closely with employers across the country to ensure that the courses that are on offer are in-line with industry needs and best practices.

“We are delighted that this year, 90% of courses will be delivered in a flexible manner – which will allow more people to engage with the courses which may have been inaccessible to them before, because of work or family commitments, or because of where they live.

“This means people from Galway can, effectively, participate in courses anywhere in Ireland – and vice versa.”

Planning permission refused for expansion of Eyre Square hotel

Galway daily news City Centre hotel gets green light for major expansion

Planning permission has been refused for the expansion of a hotel in Eyre Square, with strong criticism levied at the proposed design, and its relationship with the existing area.

Skeffington Arms Limited sought approval from the council to demolish the DNA nightclub at Ballalley Lane, and build a new seven storey extension to the Skeffington Arms Hotel in its place.

The proposed extension would contain 44 guest bedrooms, a reception, breakfast areas, and restaurant with outdoor seating area, and would be connected to the existing hotel building through a link corridor at the second floor.

The design of the building proposed a mix of stone work on the lower floor, with cladding and metal finishes on the upper floors.

There are no protected structures on the site itself, but two can be found adjacent to the north boundary, a fragment of the medieval walls bastion, and historical cottages.

A design report for the application argued that portions of the building have been “intentionally set back on ground and roof level” to create outdoor areas and to expose these historic structures to pedestrians’ view.

In refusing planning permission, the city council said the “poor design including scale, massing, height and low quality visual appearance” of the proposed extension, as well as its “unacceptable interface” with neighbouring protected structures and the Eyre Square Architectural Conservation Area.

“The proposal would in its totality result in a negative impact on the unique impact and visual amenity of the city centre area, including the character and special interest of the adjoining Eyre Square Architectural Conservation Area”.

It was also noted that the proposed plot ratio was 4.78:1, more than twice what is generally permitted under the city development plan.

Circling back to its earlier criticism, the council said that the hotel would not qualify for an exception to this rule, as it would not make a “significant architectural contribution” to the character of the city.

The developer argued that the expansion was needed to make the existing hotel, which currently has 24 rooms, competitive with other hotels in the area.
