Ailbhe Ní Mhurchú from Casla is representing Galway in Cruthaím, a creative new TG4 series for children celebrating Cruinniú na nÓg.

A series of videos on Cula4’s YouTube channel features an Irish speaker from each county as well as a representative from the diaspora, all showcasing their creativity in different ways.

Sixteen-year-old Ailbhe Ní Mhurchú has written and published a fantastic vegan recipe book, An Saol Veigeán, along with her school friends in Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin in An Cheathrú Rua.

Ailbhe’s favourite pastime is cooking and she enjoys creating new recipes. She learned many of her cooking skills from her mum, her friends and from the internet, and she is also is also interested in entrepreneurship.

Cruthaím highlights the talent of young Irish speakers across the country and Gaeltacht areas and their unique creative processes.

The Aran Islands lifeboat was called out this week for a medical evacuation of a woman from Inis Oírr after her flight was grounded by weather.

On Tuesday morning, shortly before midday, the RNLI station were asked to launch to assist a woman in need of medical attention, after she was unable to leave on a scheduled flight due to fog.

The lifeboat launched under Coxswain John O’Donnell and a full crew from the pontoon in Inis Mór and headed straight for Inis Oirr.

Weather conditions at the time of launching were good, with calm seas, a light southerly wind and fair visibility.

Once at the pier in Inis Oirr, the patient was transferred safely aboard the lifeboat under the supervision of the volunteer crew, following Covid-19 health and safety guidelines.

The lifeboat then headed straight for Rossaveal Harbour and the waiting ambulance.

Aran Islands RNLI Coxswain John O’Donnell said “The crew responded without delay and we got the patient on her way to the care she needed as quickly as possible. We would like to wish the patient all the best.”

“As we head into the summer months, please heed all safety advice for leisure activities on the water.”

“Never swim alone, always let someone know when you are due back ashore if going to sea. Always bring a mobile phone to contact someone and always wear a lifejacket.”

Having a private, out of the way space to work has always been thought of as an important part of the artistic process, something taken well to heart in the new Studio Drop launching on Inis Oírr.

Studio Drop is an architecture and design project, originally commissioned by the arts organisation Drop Everything for Galway 2020.

Launching later this month with summer creative residencies running until August, designer Jordan Ralph and a team of Drop Everything collaborators have designed and built an off-grid artist studio to work away from the pressures of towns and cities.

Located on the wild and rocky coastline of Inis Oírr, this new artistic studio inspired by traditional crafts is a one-of-a-kind structure.

Taking inspiration from common sights on Ireland’s coastal landscape, from martello towers to beehive huts, as well as construction methods used by local boat builders in Galway, Studio Drop designer Jordan Ralph has created a truly unique artisanal space.

After an inspired visit with boat builders restoring the ‘Loveen’ Galway Hooker fishing boat, Jordan reworked his design based on the traditional techniques seen in Hooker builds. The result is an experimental and unique project with an original construction.

The studio will launch on the summer solstice, June 21. Visual artists, writers, illustrators, musicians and photographers, are invited to participate in week-long residencies on the island.

The first artist in residence for this exciting new space is Maria Somerville, musician and resident host on NTS Radio.

Four weeks after the cyber attack on the HSE’s computer systems, there are still significant delays being experienced at Galway hospitals.

Tony Canavan, CEO of the Saolta University Hospital Group highlighted the ongoing impact with limited outpatient and elective activity and long delays in Emergency Departments.

Emergency Departments in particular are continuing to face heavy delays because essential services like blood tests and diagnostics are taking a lot longer.

Patients who are considering attending the emergency department in Galway hospitals are being asked to consider if that it the necessary place to go.

Tony Canavan said “If you have a genuine emergency, come to our emergency departments in our hospitals and you will be cared for.

“However, if it’s possible that you could receive appropriate care in some other setting – perhaps it’s your GP or pharmacist – you should give that some consideration as well.”

Outpatient appointments and elective activity also remain limited as core systems continue to face issues.

The Saolta Group chief also paid tribute to the ongoing efforts of staff, who have worked around the clock to return services and provide care to patients.

“I’m conscious that again our staff have had to adapt the way that they work in order to deal with this critical issue. And our staff have been excellent in finding workarounds and ways of ensuring that we continue to provide excellent patient care.

“I want to thank staff for their efforts in making that happen and I’m really conscious that you’re doing that in the context of a very, very difficult year as well. So thank you.”

Rail services between Galway and Dublin affected by engineering works

Further disruptions are expected to rail travel between Galway and Dublin this weekend due to engineering works on the line.

Irish Rail is carrying out line improvement works between Hazelhatch and Portarlington this Saturday and Sunday.

As a result of this, several trains on the Galway – Heuston line will be operating as bus transfers for section between Athlone and Dublin on Saturday.

In addition, the 18:30 Heuston to Galway train on Saturday has been cancelled.

Less severe disruption is expected on Sunday, with just one train from Heuston to Galway at 8am operating as a bus transfer between Dublin and Portarlington.

The achievements of NUI Galway student Owen Ward were celebrated at a special Mayoral reception at Leisureland in Salthill on Friday afternoon.

Owen, who is a Galway City native and member of the Irish Traveller community, left school early without a Junior Cert, but after completing the NUI Galway Access Programme he graduated from the University with a B.A. (Hons) and a Masters in Post Primary education.

Owen is a Programme Coordinator at the Access Centre, NUI Galway, and a Committee member of Údarás na hOllscoile – the first Irish Traveller to be elected to a university governing authority in Ireland.

Mayor of Galway City Cllr. Mike Cubard presented the graduate with a Galway Crystal Plate at the reception which was socially distanced and attended by a small number of people.

Cllr. Cubbard said: “Owen’s commitment to widening participation in higher education for students from diverse and socio-economic disadvantaged backgrounds has been remarkable.”

He also played a key role in the establishment of the University of Sanctuary scholarships at NUI Galway and was a co-founder of the Mincéirs Whiden Society with fellow Traveller students at the University.

Aldi store at Galway Retail Park to be fully revamped

Aldi has announced plans to extend and fully revamp its Galway Retail Park store in a move that will create ten new permanent jobs at the store.

The extended store will offer customers a larger shopping space as it receives a full ‘Project Fresh’ award winning makeover, including new hi-spec fixtures and fittings.

Aldi today submitted a planning application to Galway County Council and hopes to begin construction in early 2022.

Commenting on the announcement, Colin Breslin, Regional Managing Director, Aldi Ireland said that creating a larger Aldi store featuring our award-winning Project Fresh format will “provide an even better shopping experience for shoppers.”

“The store team are hugely excited by this announcement and are looking forward to the store receiving a state-of-the art upgrade.”

Witness appeal for serious Corrandulla car crash

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone who have footage of a serious car crash which occurred on the N84 on Wednesday night.

One person was hospitalised with serious injuries following a three car crash on the on the N84 at Grange, Corrandulla, which happened at approximately 9.15pm on Wednesday night.

Two vehicles collided at a junction on the road; as a result of this collision, one vehicle veered off course and collided with a third vehicle.

The driver from one of the cars, a male, was taken to University Hospital Galway, where his condition was described by Gardaí as serious.

The road was closed overnight and into Thursday while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carried out a technical examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have travelled on the N84 between Headford and Galway or on the L2116 between 8.45pm and 9.30pm to come forward.

Gardaí are also asking anyone who may have Dash Cam footage and who may have travelled this route during these times, to make contact with them at Galway Garda Station on 091 538000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

COVID-19: Health officials report 319 new cases nationally

The Department of Health has reported 319 new cases of COVID-19 in the State.

The latest data shows that there are 60 patients with the disease in hospitals in Ireland – however the HSE’s CEO Paul Reid said this morning that University Hospital Galway is one of eight adult hospitals with no confirmed cases.

Of the 60 patients in hospital with the virus, 23 are in ICUs.

Health officials have said that daily case numbers may change due to future data review, validation, and update.

No daily county breakdowns have been provided since the cyberattack on the HSE three weeks ago.

Gardaí are appealing for information regarding criminal damage done to a boat at Oughterard pier last month.

Significant damage was caused to the rear of a boat while it was moored at Oughterard Pier on a date between May 12 and May 17, which is the subject of a criminal damage investigation.

Gardaí believe the damage was caused by another vessel, or pleasure craft. The boat in question is a 26 foot sailing boat and is brown in colour.

Gardaí are interested in speaking with anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the pier on these dates and who may be able to assist them with their enquiries.

In particular they are anxious to talk to anyone who may have witnessed a collision with this boat or who may have video footage, including dash cam footage, of this location covering the dates in question.

Galway TD calls on Government to promote rapid antigen testing

East Galway TD Seán Canney has called on the Government to promote the use of rapid antigen testing, saying that not adopting successful measures to contain COVID-19 is damaging the economy and our social fabric.

Deputy Canney said that the Government is still failing to listen to the advice of Irish and international epidemiologists who are not members of NPHET.

This, he said, is making Ireland ‘a laggard’ in terms of opening up safe international tourism and hospitality opportunities.

“In 2019 a record 11.3 million oversea tourists were welcomed on the island of Ireland creating over in €5.9 billion in revenue,” said Deputy Canney.

“Regional Ireland is heavily dependent on a healthy tourism sector and the goal should be to get our economy open and growing.

“The Regional Group of TDs state that the ongoing aversion by Government of antigen testing will negatively impact our tourism, hospitality, and aviation sectors and thus a large section of our regional SME indigenous industries.”

The Independent TD said that given both the cost savings of antigen testing over PCR tests and the cost implications on the hospitality sectors in the coming months, one must ask “who in Government is actually writing the cheques to cover this activity?”

He also asked when will the “full costs of our outlier status be fully assessed, published and politically owned?”

“Our communities and our economy have suffered hugely, and it is now time for renewed and urgent action utilising the latest understandings in science and technology that can allow us to live with Covid-19 while we work to defeat it and get the economy going.”

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in connection with the ramming of a Garda Patrol Car this week.

A man in his 40s was arrested on Thursday in relation to an incident on Wednesday night, where a black Audi rammed a Garda Patrol Car that was attempting to pull it over.

The man was detained at Murrough Garda Station, and has since been released without charge. Investigations are ongoing, and a file will go to the DPP.

At around 8:30pm on Wednesday night, at Altan on the Western Distributor Road, Gardaí activated their patrol car lights and approached a car.

The driver of this car then took off at speed in their direction, and despite efforts by the Gardaí to take evasive action, rammed the front passenger side of their car.

The two officers in the car were injured, but did not need to be taken to hospital.

The audi fled at high speed out onto the Western Distributor Road. The car was later found abandoned in the Knocknacarra area.

Sunshine forecast this weekend but Galway will be 10°C cooler than Dublin

Sunday will be the warmest day of the year so far in Dublin and other parts of the East, with plenty of sunshine forecast and temperatures expected to reach a toasty 26 degrees.

But while the weekend will be relatively bright in Galway with some sunny spells, it will be nowhere near as warm, with high temperatures in the West mostly remaining in the mid to late teens.

Met Éireann says that Saturday afternoon will see some sunshine developing, with the best of the sun in east Galway as it continues mostly cloudy in the west.

Highest temperatures will reach just 16 degrees in parts of Connemara, while temperatures may rise to 20 degrees in the east of the county.

Sunday will be much cooler and slightly cloudier in the west than in other parts of Ireland, with afternoon temperatures again in the mid to high teens. But it should remain mostly dry and there will be decent spells of sunshine in parts of the county.

Showers will develop across Connacht on Sunday evening and showery rain will move into in the West.

No COVID patients being treated at UHG

There are no COVID-19 patients receiving treatment at University Hospital Galway today, as the total number of cases in Irish hospitals has fallen to its lowest in nearly nine months.

Paul Reid, the HSE’s CEO, said this morning that there are are no cases at eight adult hospitals in the State, including UHG, Naas General Hospital, Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore and Sligo University Hospital.

St James’s Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin also recorded no COVID patients today, as well as the three main children’s hospitals in the Republic.

At the peak of the third wave of COVID-19 on in mid January, there were over 2,000 people being treated in hospital.

As of yesterday evening, there are just 59 cases receiving treatment in hospitals, with 23 of those in ICU.

“This is a remarkable benefit of our strong vaccination programme and public support overall. We all deserve to cherish and protect these great moments,” said Paul Reid.

He added that the eight hospitals reporting no COVID cases will be a g”reat relief for patients, the public and staff.”

Call for more research into nursing and midwifery care

A professor at NUI Galway has called for more investment to embed a research culture into nursing and midwifery care.

Professor Dympna Casey, who is Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University, made the call ahead of an online seminar on nursing and midwifery later this month.

The semenar is part of a series of events to celebrate the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and will take place on Friday 25 June at 1pm. It is open to anyone who registers at https://iuanursingmidwiferyresearch.eventbrite.ie

Professor Dympna Casey said: “We need resources and government investment to embed research and a research culture into nursing and midwifery care and support clinical-academic career pathways.”

NUI Galway’s School of Nursing and Midwifery is hosting the second seminar in the series – The Contribution of Schools of Nursing and Midwifery to Research – in partnership with Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin and University of Limerick.

It will illustrate examples of research led by nurses and midwives in vulnerable populations, capturing the views and experiences of healthcare workers and supporting high-quality research evidence for decision-making in policy and practice in Ireland and globally.

Professor Casey will also moderate a live panel discussion with audience questions.

“Nurses and midwives are not only at the frontline of healthcare delivery and have been critical during the response to Covid-19, but are also highly active in leading programmes of research that ensure evidence-based decision making in policy and practice,” Professor Casey said.

“We are pleased to lead on this seminar in collaboration with DCU, UL and Trinity College Dublin, illustrating just some of the essential research and evidence that informs clinical practice and healthcare policy in Ireland and on a global scale.”

The monthly seminar series being organised by the IUA’s Heads of Schools of Nursing and Midwifery Group will showcase the successes, challenges, research and innovations occurring in academic and clinical settings nationally.

Man arrested for ramming Garda patrol car, injuring officers

A man in his 40s has been arrested today for ramming a Garda patrol car with his own car last night, injuring two officers.

On Wednesday, June 9 Gardaí observed a black Audi A5 car at Altan, on the Western Distributor Road, at approximately 8:30pm.

After approaching the car and turning on the blue light, the driver of the other vehicle drove directly towards them at speed.

The Garda car took evasive action, but the driver of the Audi still rammed the rammed the front passenger side of the patrol car.

The Audi car then fled at high speed out onto the Western Distributor Road. Gardaí followed in the direction of this vehicle and requested assistance.

Officers were then alerted to an abandoned vehicle in the Knocknacarra area.

Two Gardaí were injured, but did not require hospitalisation, as a result of this ramming incident.

This afternoon Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s at Galway Courthouse in connection with endangerment of the officers.

The man is currently detained at North Western Regional Headquarters in Murrough under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

COVID-19: 398 new cases reported in the State

The Department of Health has reported 398 new cases of COVID-19 in the Republic.

There are 70 people with the disease in hospitals across the state, with 23 of those in ICU.

Health officials have said that the case numbers may change due to future data review, validation and update.

No county breakdown or additional data was provided by the Department of Heath today.
