Heart and stroke charity Croí is inviting the public to Heartfest, a free and holistic cardiovascular health and wellness event at Croí House from 10am to 3pm on World Heart Day next Thursday, 29 September.

Self-Care is Heart Care is one of the core pillars that the World Heart Federation has identified for this year’s World Heart Day campaign.

With this in mind, the charity is opening the doors of Croí House for its first public event since 2019 and the Croí Health Team will be providing heart health checks as well as information and general heart health advice.

At Heartfest, people will be able to avail of free taster sessions of some of Croí’s most popular offerings such as their exercise classes like Back to Fitness, strength training and yoga; mindfulness and goal setting sessions with their Health Psychologist; and their Cardiac Dietitian will host a Q&A session on eating for a healthy heart.

Local community clubs and groups will also be there to highlight the many and varied activities available locally that contribute to overall heart health and wellbeing.

Heartfest, supported by Benecol, will finish with a free public talk that evening from 7pm to 8.30 pm at Croí House on ‘Self-Care is Heart Care – The Power of Knowing Your Numbers and Taking Action’.

The talk will feature experts Dr Susan Connolly, Consultant Cardiologist; Dr Lisa Hynes, Health Psychologist and Croí’s Head of Health Programmes; and Frankie Lane, who will share his story of heart disease and recovery.

Galway Daily news missing teen found safe

A young woman was taken to University Hospital Galway on Sunday night after a hit-and-run in Galway city.

The woman was walking on Sandy Road in the early hours of Monday morning when she was struck by a vehicle which fled the scene.

It is understood that her injuries are not serious.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information, to come forward.

They’re also asking those with dash-cam footage of the area between 1am and 1.30am to make contact with investigating Gardaí at Galway Garda Station.

Young Japanese musicians from the Higashikawa Band have ended their visit to Galway with an incredible concert at Galway Cathedral.

The performance on Sunday was a feast of music from Ireland and Japan, featuring the Higashikawa Band alongside students from Athenry Music School, the Galway Chamber Choir and St Patrick’s Brass Band.

The visit and concerts were curated and artistically directed by Professor James Cavanagh in collaboration with Claddagh School of Music, Athenry Music School and St Patrick’s Brass Band.

The Higashikawa Band visited Ballinasloe Secondary School, Claddagh National School and Coláiste Bhaile Chláir last Thursday and the band is now in Dublin where they will perform this evening.

Irish Water lifts Do Not Consume notice for Inis Oírr

Water on Inis Óirr is now safe to drink after Irish Water’s Do Not Consume Notice was lifted yesterday with immediate effect.

The notice was issued to protect approximately 257 customers after elevated levels of manganese were found in the water supply.

Speaking about the lifting of the notice, Dr Pat O’Sullivan, Irish Water’s Drinking Water Compliance Specialist, said that Irish Water acknowledges and understands the impact this Do Not Consume Notice had on the community.

He said they sincerely regret the inconvenience and that drinking water compliance and operational experts worked hard to resolve this issue as quickly and as safely as possible.

“We are grateful to the media, elected representatives and members of the public who shared the information,” said Dr O’Sullivan.

“We would also like to thank Galway County Council and HSE for their input and support throughout the process.”

All consumers on the Inis Oírr Public Water Supply Scheme can now resume normal use of the water supply for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth.

Irish Water and the Local Authority/Health Service Executive Water Liaison Group will continue to meet and will review ongoing process control, monitoring and testing of the drinking water supply.

National Women’s Enterprise Day launched

Businesswomen in Galway are being invited to take part in National Women’s Enterprise Day (NWED) which has been launched this week.

The Local Enterprise Offices initiative, now in its 16th year, will take place on October 13 and aims to encourage female entrepreneurship.

The theme of this year’s event is Our Future, Our Way which will be reflected in the 16 physical events taking place across the country, supported by Enterprise Ireland and the Local Authorities.

The regional event, run by Local Enterprise Office Galway, Mayo and Roscommmon, will take place on October 13 at Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar.

The MC for the event is local businesswoman Loretta Ní Ghabháin of Lorg Media, and the keynote speaker is Susan Culleton Hayes, ‘The Positive Economist’.

The event will also include a panel discussion featuring ‘Leading Lights’ from each of the three counties – Sarah Flood, Managing Director of Snap Mayo, Ruth Larkin of Lark Bridal Limited in Roscommon and Chloe Gardiner, of Galway based company ‘The Wonky Woolins.’

Early-stage women entrepreneurs in Ireland are mainly focused on the customer services sector with 64% of those surveyed working in that area.

The report showed a significant growth in export customers for these businesses, with 26% of customers of these early-stage startups based abroad, up from 15% in 2019 highlighting how they have diversified their markets during Covid.

There will be events nationwide featuring a mix of well-known Irish entrepreneurs and businesspeople such as Suzanne Jackson, founder of the SoSu Cosmetics brand, successful jockey Nina Carberry, International referee Michelle O’Neill, award winning jewellery designer Chupi Sweetman, Interior design specialist and Home of the Year judge Suzie McAdam and broadcaster and entrepreneur Aine Kerr.

Breda Fox, Head of Enterprise at LEO Galway said National Women’s Enterprise Day has become a flagship event for women entrepreneurs and businesswomen every year.

Connemara broadcaster is new presenter of RnaG’s Iris Aniar

A young Conamara broadcaster, Máire Bríd Ní Chualáin, has taken over as presenter of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s flagship magazine for the west, Iris Aniar.

Iris Aniar is broadcast Monday to Friday at 9.15 am and covers stories of interest to Galway and Mayo audiences as well as the Ráth Cairn Gaeltacht in Meath, which has close connections to the west.

Máire Bríd is from Ros a’Mhíl in Conamara and has been working with RTÉ RnaG since 2015.

She worked initially in the newsroom of the station, and also presented music shows and documentaries, including a series about death and the afterlife.

For just over a year, Máire Bríd was the anchor for the lunchtime news Nuacht a hAon, and she now moves to the presenter’s chair for the popular morning magazine show Iris Aniar.

Máire Bríd won the Rising Star award, Réalta Óg na Bliana, at the Oireachtas Media Awards in 2020, and prior to that was shortlisted for Best Newcomer in the PPI Radio Awards.

She is a singer, and won many underage prizes for sean-nós singing, and is also interested in acting and keep fit.

Máire Bríd said she is looking forward to her new role as presenter of Iris Aniar.

“Myself and producer Mícheál Ó Tuathail will be bringing communities in the west all the stories and issues of most concern and interest to them, hot off the press,” said Máire Bríd.

“One of the things I’m most looking forward to is getting out and about to meet people and hear their personal stories.”

Shesaid that they will be covering serious stories on the programme, but also making room for the more playful stuff.

“We all need a bit of fun in our day with all that’s going on in the world at the moment.”

The team plans to make the listeners an integral part of the programme, and they also intend to ensure that the voices of today’s young people are heard on the show, with regular features with schools, youth clubs and sports clubs across the region.

They won’t be forgetting the Galway Diaspora either, and plan to check in regularly with emigrant communities in areas like Boston and London during the year.

Sustainable development event to take place in city

A Sustainable Development Goals panel discussion will take place next month in Galway city looking at Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

The event, hosted by University of Galway Students’ Union, will focus on issues such as cycling and housing in Galway and what can be done to improve the city for everyone.

Speakers on the panel include Brendan Smith from Galway National Park City together with representatives from Galway Cycling Campaign and Threshold.

The event is open to the public and takes place on Tuesday 20 October at IT250 in the IT Building of the University. Free tickets are available on Eventbrite here.

Students’ Union President Sai Gujulla said that they are delighted to be hosting a panel discussion as part of Ireland’s first Sustainable Development Goals week.

“As part of the Galway community our students are passionate about making the city more liveable and sustainable for us all.”

Students’ Union Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer added that the housing crisis is having a huge impact across all levels of society.

Jason Fallon (23), missing from his home in Athenry, was last seen at approximately 5pm on Sunday, September 18.

Jason is described as being 5 foot 8 inches in height with a slim build. He has short brown hair.

Jason was last seen wearing blue jeans, brown/beige coloured top and runners.

He left home and is driving a White Volkswagen Caddy Van with a registration number of 162 D.

Jason’s family and An Garda Síochána are concerned for his welfare, and are asking the public’s help in finding him.

Two Galway TDs have criticised the lack of a specific focus on the islands in the new LEADER programme.

Sinn Féin TDs Claire Kerrane and Mairéad Farrell have said that their are different obstacles facing island communities, and being grouped in with a county does not serve their needs.

The LEADER programme provides funding for community led projects in rural areas, divided into Local Action Groups (LAGs).

These have generally been divided up on a county basis, and offshore islands are included with the rest of the county.

Deputy Kerrane said that it is a “blow to our Island communities” that the 2023-2027 LEADER programme will not reestablish an Island-specific LAG.

“It is also frustrating that the briefing note advises that consideration was given to establishing a LAG for the Islands, but ultimately the Government decided not to go ahead.”

“We know that Island communities are placed at a competitive disadvantage for LEADER funding by being included in current sub-regional areas.”

“Including the Islands in broad groupings, usually by County, does not serve their needs and does not support local development in these communities.”

Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell said that it is deeply disappointing that the voices of islanders have not been heard on the matter.

“We know from engagement with those who work in delivery of the LEADER programme that there are different obstacles for the Islands in availing of funding and that we need to deal with them.”

Deputy Kerrane said that it is not too late for Minister Heather Humphreys to revisit the decision, and establish an island specific grouping for the upcoming programme.

Man jailed for 16th driving without insurance conviction

A man convicted of driving without insurance for the 16th time was sentenced to four months in prison at Galway District Court.

Samir Parker (28), from Rinn Lia, Ballybrit, pleaded guilty to driving without having a valid licence or insurance by video-link.

The court heard that on May 25 of 2020, he was pulled over on Mill Street in the city at 11:40pm, at a time when he was disqualified from driving.

Another public order charge for threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour was withdrawn on the plea.

Parker could not have had valid insurance or a licence at the time, as he had been given a 10 year disqualification at Limerick City Circuit Court a few months prior to this.

The court heard that Parker had a total of 69 previous convictions, almost almost all of which were road traffic, and was currently serving an eight month sentence.

These included 15 previous convictions for driving without insurance.

Mr Parker’s solicitor said that he made a silly decision, and accepts that he has a bad record. She said that he has two children, and has the support of his mother and partner.

Judge Fahy imposed four months in prison, which was to be served after the end of his current sentence, with one month concurrent for driving without a licence; She also imposed a ten year disqualification.

U20 Hurling Club Championship finals – times & tickets

The U20 Hurling Championship finals will take place this week, with the A & B1 finals going ahead over the next two days.

On Tuesday, the B1 final will take place at 7:30pm in Duggan Park with Liam Mellows v Portumna.

That’ll be followed on Wednesday by Turloughmore v Sarsfields in the U20 A final, at the same time slot and venue.

Tickets for the two games cost €10 each, while U16s go free and do not need a ticket. Purchase tickets online for the A final here, and the B1 final here.

The A Final of Turloughmore v Sarsfields will also be livestreamed for people who can’t make it in person.

Three Galway schools have joined the Creative Clusters initiative to help foster young people’s interests in art, music, drama, or more.

Created in 2018, the Creative Clusters initiative sees between three and five schools collaborating on an creative learning project.

Schools in each cluster will enjoy access to a specialist facilitator, artist or creative expertise in whatever their chosen area of interest or theme might be.

The latest expansion of the initiative seen 21 new clusters, comprising 78 schools, join the programme for the 2022-2024 school years.

The new Galway cluster is made of Athenry Boys NS, Galway Educate Together, and Eglish NS.

They will receive €3,000 funding per school over a two-year period to implement their project in the 2022–2024 school years.

Minister for Education Norma Foley said, “Creative Clusters is an excellent initiative that supports students to develop their creativity, learn to adapt and collaborate and provides them with real opportunities to express themselves in a variety of exciting new ways”.

Galway will see a fairly strong start to the week, with sunny spells amidst mostly cloudy weather, but the rain is expected to make its return later.

Monday will be mostly overcast, but there will be some short sunny spells during the day as well, with temperatures reaching highs of 15 to 17 degrees.

The day is also expected to remain dry for the most part, with light southwest breezes, and temperatures will stay in the mid teens of 13 to 15 degrees overnight.

Tomorrow is expected to be a slight improvement on Monday, with some stronger periods of sunshine in the morning, though conditions will again mostly be cloudy.

Staying dry, highest temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees are expected on Tuesday, with a light southerly to westerly breeze.

Things will start to take a turn on Wednesday, as light rain is expected to make a return in coastal areas, while it will mostly remain dry, but cloudy inland.

Definitely getting a bit gustier on the coast also, as a moderate southerly wind is expected throughout the day, though again, lighter inland.

Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees on Wednesday, and staying in that region overnight.

Come Thursday the weather will break in a bad way, Met Eireann has forecast, with with widespread heavy rain.

Though some sunny spells are also expected later in the day as the rain dies off. Highest temperatures on Thursday of 15 to 17 degrees.

Galway daily news Water outages in multiple areas of Galway due to burst mains

Disruption to traffic and the local water supply is expected in Craughwell today, as Irish Water is carrying out repair works on the local network.

Irish Water will be carrying out leak repair works on the water mains at Ballymore Lane from 11am to 3pm on Monday.

These will cause water outages to homes in Ballymore Lane, Slí na gCapall, Slí Uí Mhaoilíosa, Blackberry Way, and surrounding areas.

A traffic management plan will be in place for the duration of the works.

It can take up to 2-3 hours after repairs are completed before people see their full water supply restored, as the network refills.
