The brand-new Tesco store at Tuam Shopping Centre has opened its doors to customers today after a rebrand and major renovations were carried out on the former Joyce’s Supermarket.

The new store was officially opened by store manager Rory Tierney who welcomed the first customers into the almost 14,000 square foot store.

The supermarket, which has 39 staff members, is the first of nine new Tesco stores in the Galway area after the takeover of Joyce’s Supermarkets.

Chief Operating Officer of Tesco Ireland, Geoff Byrne, said they are very excited to open the doors of the new Tuam store as it joins a 154-store network across the country.

“As we celebrate 25 years in Ireland, we are delighted to open this first store of nine in the Galway area,” he said.

“We are committed to ensuring that these new stores play a big part in local communities and we’re looking forward to serving the Galway community for many years to come.”

Store manager Rory Tierney added that it is great to see customers coming through the doors already.

“A lot of work has gone into opening today and I am excited to get to know the local community in the coming days and weeks. The team and I are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new into our store.”

The Tuam Store Community Fund will support the local area with donations to three local causes, Tuam Stars GAA Club, Tuam Juvenile Athletics Club, and Gardenfield National School, benefiting from the store’s first campaign.

Galway EuroMillions raffle winner reveals plans for dream trip

A lucky EuroMillions player in Galway has revealed plans for a dream trip to Elvis Presley’s homeland of Graceland, Memphis after claiming their winnings of over €1 million this afternoon.

The player, who wishes to remain private, said that it took weeks for them to realise they had the winning EuroMillions Ireland Only Raffle ticket worth a staggering €1,005,000.

The lucky local was looking at the ticket which did not have any of the EuroMillions numbers, so they threw it somewhere in their car.

“I completely forgot to check the raffle code on the bottom of the ticket,” they said.

“A few weeks later I decided to do a clear out of the car and I found the ticket wedged down the side of the seat.

“I scanned the ticket on the app and called the National Lottery Claims Team and that’s when they told me I was a millionaire! I couldn’t speak, I was in such complete and utter shock.

“I had a plan to surprise my wife for her birthday by putting the cheque in the card, but my great plan lasted all of one hour, I just had to tell her, I couldn’t keep it a secret any longer!”

The Galway player purchased the winning EuroMillions ticket worth €1,005,000 on the day of the draw, Friday 19 August, in Costcutter, Bealadangan.

“We’ve always wanted to go to Graceland in Memphis to visit the home of Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll himself,” they added.

“That’s all we have in mind for the moment, we’re still letting it all sink in.”

Also claiming their prize in Lottery HQ today was a player from Kilkenny who took home the EuroMillions top prize worth €500,000.

The winning Normal Play ticket was sold on the 25th of August at Caulfield’s SuperValu store in Loughboy, on the outskirts of Kilkenny city.

New remote work hub in Loughrea to recevie €167,000 grant

A new enterprise hub for remote workers and entrepreneurs in Loughrea will receive a LEADER grant from Galway Rural Development of €167,800.

Comworks will be located in the centre of Loughrea town in a 6,500 square foot facility – at the former Corrys ‘Railway House’ building.

Headed by entrepreneur Jonathan Madden, the hub will provide high quality workspaces, high-speed 24/7 internet access with permanent desks or hot desks, meeting facilities and more.

Those interested in working from the hub can now complete a survey available on the Comworks website and share their thoughts.

The Loughrea Hub is just one of a number of major projects in east Galway to receive LEADER approval from GRD this year, with more than €1 million provided in development grants.

CEO of GRD Steve Dolan said the state-of-the-art hub will provide many opportunities for Loughrea and has praised the initiative of the Comworks team.

Senior Manager of GRD’s LEADER team Conor Carty also praised the enterprise.

“This hub will provide opportunities for young workers to realise their career potential within their own communities – and without the need to move to the likes of Dublin to take up a job. And there will be opportunities for small and medium enterprises to create a more motivated workforce and do so without the need to rent office space,” he said.

Conor said that facilities like these will give employees the option to work a day or two in their local digital hub and forms part of the government’s Our Rural Future Policy.

“In essence, the Comworks Hub will offer remote working space for both the local community and the seasonal / tourist community. The hub will provide co-working spaces as well as a meeting room and teleconferencing facilities.”

UHG is the country’s second most overcrowded hospital today

University Hospital Galway is the second most overcrowded in Ireland today, with 60 patients waiting on trolleys.

INMO Trolley/Ward Watch figures show 56 patients without a bed at the UHG emergency department this morning, and another four in the wards.

The only hospital more overcrowded today is Cork UH, where there are 70 patients on trolleys.

Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe is doing better, with two patients in the wards who do not have a bed.

Nationwide, there are 476 people in Irish hospitals who are waiting on trolleys today.

One of Galway’s best loved bars is celebrating the Oyster in true style by officially launching Galway’s first Oyster bar this week.

The launch is to mark their involvement on the Seafood Trail as part of the Galway International Oyster Festival 2022.

The festival kicks off this Friday, September 23, with The McSwiggans Oyster bar being shucked open at 4pm.

The Oyster bar will be fully stocked with Dooncastle Oysters over ice and customers will be able to enjoy Oysters as is or with a mignonette dressing.

Dooncastle Oysters are the main Oyster supplier for McSwiggans and will be on hand all weekend as part of the Seafood trail. Pair the oysters with a creamy pint of Guinness or choose from the McSwiggans extensive wine cellar.

The launching of the Oyster Bar downstairs in McSwiggans is to celebrate seafood and to offer people in Galway the opportunity to enjoy Oysters in a very casual setting.

Pop in for one or six, enjoy on a high stool or seated throughout the bar where suits you.

Irish Seafood will be king this weekend with a crock of Mussels served with the twice cooked skin on fries or a plank of prawns served with the very traditional Marie rose sauce.

The menu will also include fish and chips as well as Seafood Chowder and their home made brown bread.

The landmark bar and restaurant has been a part of Galway life for over 30 years, evolving from a lively country store trading potatoes in the iconic Woodquay Market to now being a welcoming place to eat the best of what Ireland has to offer on a plate.

Working with local suppliers and producers like Dooncastle Oysters is why McSwiggans has held its place on the very reputable Galway food scene map.

“I began as an assistant to oyster farmers, learning how to maintain and care for stock,” explained John McHugh Owner of Dooncastle Oysters.

“In each farm I worked in I was taught something new and from this I developed my own technique. I decided rather than mass producing I would bring quality to the market, through this my oysters acquired their unique flavour.”

McSwiggans Oyster Bar will be open from 4pm this Friday, September 23 and will be a feature within the bar post festival.

The Maldron Hotel in Oranmore has been put up for sale, with an guide price of €13 million.

The sale of the four star hotel is being handled by Savills Ireland, which says that it represents an outstanding investment.

Operated by Dalata Ireland, the 113 bedroom Maldron Oranmore currently has a rental income of €900,000.

The property has had upwards only rent reviews to date, with the next review in January of 2023.

The hotel also operates the Q Bar and Grain & Grill Restaurant, along with conference facilities, and a leisure centre with a gym, 20m pool, sauna, steam rooms, and more.

Property agent Tom Barrett described this as a, “Superb opportunity to acquire the freehold interest in this long income hotel investment property”.

Community sector workers holding one day strike

Community sector workers in Galway and Mayo working with disabilities will be holding a one day strike tomorrow as part of a pay and conditions dispute.

Fórsa and SIPTU workers at Ability West and Western Care will be engaging in a strike action on Thursday, September 22.

This will be followed by further strikes at Enable Ireland Cork and Kerry on Friday as part of the ICTU-led Valuing Care, Valuing Community campaign.

The strikes are part of the Valuing Care, Valuing Community campaign which is supported by the ICTU, SIPTU, Fórsa and the INMO.

This campaign aims to achieve better pay and conditions for for social care professionals and other staff employed in agencies funded by the HSE.

Research published last year by Fórsa trade union shows that up to a third of staff in these agencies are leaving their jobs each year to seek better employment in similar work elsewhere.

Fórsa national secretary Ashley Connolly said: “Government is failing to grasp the link between its chronic underfunding of the services we’re talking about and the failure to meet the HSE’s recruitment targets in, for example, disability services.

“The outgoing head of the HSE has acknowledged they’re having problems meeting targets for disability services nationally, including unfilled roles in 18 organisations funded by the State.”

This has led to growing waiting lists and issues with delivering disability services, she added.

SIPTU Public Administration and Community Organiser, Adrian Kane said, “These workers have not had a pay rise since 2008.”

“Unlike trade union members in the public or private sector they currently have no way of negotiating a pay increase.”

“Their wages can only be increased by the Government agreeing to increase funding to the organisations which employ them.”

“We need the Government to do as it did prior to 2008 which was provide increases in funding to Section 39 care and community organisations so these vital workers can continue to provide the services they do.”

Workers the Irish Wheelchair Association, St. Joseph’s Foundation and EmployAbility went on strike in Cork yesterday.

The final group of workers in this wave of action to go on strike will be in Enable Ireland in counties Cork and Kerry on Friday, September 23.

100 new jobs were announced for Galway City at the official opening of ICS Medical Devices new Ballybrit facility this week.

ICS officially opened their new manufacturing and R&D facility on Tuesday, announcing that 100 new jobs will be created there.

The company also announced that it plans to expand its Ballybrit facilities by a further 10,000sqft, starting next year.

“Our aim is to become the first-choice provider of contract design, development and manufacturing services for innovative start-up medical device companies throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the US” said Seamus Fahey, CEO and founder of ICS Medical Devices.

“We now plan to accelerate our growth momentum by significantly expanding our team, capacity, and capability.”

“We look forward to serving new and existing customers and welcoming new team members to our world-class facility.”

The catheter designer and manufacturer was founded three years ago, and currently has a workforce of more than 70 people.

The newly announced footprint expansion, planned for 2023, will add additional manufacturing and cleanroom space to existing operations.

As part of that continued expansion, a new customer innovation centre will open to provide specialist support for the development of minimally invasive catheters.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar, said that the jobs announcement is a great boost for Galway, and Ireland as a whole.

“We have established ourselves now as a leader in the life sciences sector and have a reputation for excellence and innovation.”

Heart and stroke charity Croí is inviting the public to Heartfest, a free and holistic cardiovascular health and wellness event at Croí House from 10am to 3pm on World Heart Day next Thursday, 29 September.

At Heartfest, people will be able to avail of free taster sessions of some of Croí’s most popular offerings such as their exercise classes like Back to Fitness, strength training and yoga; mindfulness and goal setting sessions with their Health Psychologist; and their Cardiac Dietitian will host a Q&A session on eating for a healthy heart.

Local community clubs and groups will also be there to highlight the many and varied activities available locally that contribute to overall heart health and wellbeing.

Heartfest, supported by Benecol, will finish with a free public talk that evening from 7pm to 8.30 pm at Croí House on ‘Self-Care is Heart Care – The Power of Knowing Your Numbers and Taking Action’.

The talk will feature experts Dr Susan Connolly, Consultant Cardiologist; Dr Lisa Hynes, Health Psychologist and Croí’s Head of Health Programmes; and Frankie Lane, who will share his story of heart disease and recovery.

This public talk will be a hybrid event with the option to tune in from home live via a livestream link.

Galway Daily news missing teen found safe

A young woman was taken to University Hospital Galway on Sunday night after a hit-and-run in Galway city.

The woman was walking on Sandy Road in the early hours of Monday morning when she was struck by a vehicle which fled the scene.

It is understood that her injuries are not serious.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information, to come forward.

They’re also asking those with dash-cam footage of the area between 1am and 1.30am to make contact with investigating Gardaí at Galway Garda Station.

Young Japanese musicians from the Higashikawa Band have ended their visit to Galway with an incredible concert at Galway Cathedral.

The performance on Sunday was a feast of music from Ireland and Japan, featuring the Higashikawa Band alongside students from Athenry Music School, the Galway Chamber Choir and St Patrick’s Brass Band.

The visit and concerts were curated and artistically directed by Professor James Cavanagh in collaboration with Claddagh School of Music, Athenry Music School and St Patrick’s Brass Band.

The Higashikawa Band visited Ballinasloe Secondary School, Claddagh National School and Coláiste Bhaile Chláir last Thursday and the band is now in Dublin where they will perform this evening.

Irish Water lifts Do Not Consume notice for Inis Oírr

Water on Inis Óirr is now safe to drink after Irish Water’s Do Not Consume Notice was lifted yesterday with immediate effect.

The notice was issued to protect approximately 257 customers after elevated levels of manganese were found in the water supply.

Speaking about the lifting of the notice, Dr Pat O’Sullivan, Irish Water’s Drinking Water Compliance Specialist, said that Irish Water acknowledges and understands the impact this Do Not Consume Notice had on the community.

He said they sincerely regret the inconvenience and that drinking water compliance and operational experts worked hard to resolve this issue as quickly and as safely as possible.

“We are grateful to the media, elected representatives and members of the public who shared the information,” said Dr O’Sullivan.

“We would also like to thank Galway County Council and HSE for their input and support throughout the process.”

All consumers on the Inis Oírr Public Water Supply Scheme can now resume normal use of the water supply for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth.

Irish Water and the Local Authority/Health Service Executive Water Liaison Group will continue to meet and will review ongoing process control, monitoring and testing of the drinking water supply.

National Women’s Enterprise Day launched

Businesswomen in Galway are being invited to take part in National Women’s Enterprise Day (NWED) which has been launched this week.

The Local Enterprise Offices initiative, now in its 16th year, will take place on October 13 and aims to encourage female entrepreneurship.

The theme of this year’s event is Our Future, Our Way which will be reflected in the 16 physical events taking place across the country, supported by Enterprise Ireland and the Local Authorities.

The regional event, run by Local Enterprise Office Galway, Mayo and Roscommmon, will take place on October 13 at Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar.

The MC for the event is local businesswoman Loretta Ní Ghabháin of Lorg Media, and the keynote speaker is Susan Culleton Hayes, ‘The Positive Economist’.

The event will also include a panel discussion featuring ‘Leading Lights’ from each of the three counties – Sarah Flood, Managing Director of Snap Mayo, Ruth Larkin of Lark Bridal Limited in Roscommon and Chloe Gardiner, of Galway based company ‘The Wonky Woolins.’

Early-stage women entrepreneurs in Ireland are mainly focused on the customer services sector with 64% of those surveyed working in that area.

The report showed a significant growth in export customers for these businesses, with 26% of customers of these early-stage startups based abroad, up from 15% in 2019 highlighting how they have diversified their markets during Covid.

There will be events nationwide featuring a mix of well-known Irish entrepreneurs and businesspeople such as Suzanne Jackson, founder of the SoSu Cosmetics brand, successful jockey Nina Carberry, International referee Michelle O’Neill, award winning jewellery designer Chupi Sweetman, Interior design specialist and Home of the Year judge Suzie McAdam and broadcaster and entrepreneur Aine Kerr.

Breda Fox, Head of Enterprise at LEO Galway said National Women’s Enterprise Day has become a flagship event for women entrepreneurs and businesswomen every year.

“While the past two years saw successful online celebrations, it really is special to be back with sixteen in person events across the country, and some amazing speakers and inspirational businesswomen,” she said.

“If you have that itch to start a business, or maybe you are already running a business, then this is the event for you. It can help you grow your network, find out what supports are available and learn from those who have gone before.

Connemara broadcaster is new presenter of RnaG’s Iris Aniar

A young Conamara broadcaster, Máire Bríd Ní Chualáin, has taken over as presenter of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s flagship magazine for the west, Iris Aniar.

Iris Aniar is broadcast Monday to Friday at 9.15 am and covers stories of interest to Galway and Mayo audiences as well as the Ráth Cairn Gaeltacht in Meath, which has close connections to the west.

Máire Bríd is from Ros a’Mhíl in Conamara and has been working with RTÉ RnaG since 2015.

She worked initially in the newsroom of the station, and also presented music shows and documentaries, including a series about death and the afterlife.

For just over a year, Máire Bríd was the anchor for the lunchtime news Nuacht a hAon, and she now moves to the presenter’s chair for the popular morning magazine show Iris Aniar.

Máire Bríd won the Rising Star award, Réalta Óg na Bliana, at the Oireachtas Media Awards in 2020, and prior to that was shortlisted for Best Newcomer in the PPI Radio Awards.

She is a singer, and won many underage prizes for sean-nós singing, and is also interested in acting and keep fit.

Máire Bríd said she is looking forward to her new role as presenter of Iris Aniar.

“Myself and producer Mícheál Ó Tuathail will be bringing communities in the west all the stories and issues of most concern and interest to them, hot off the press,” said Máire Bríd.

“One of the things I’m most looking forward to is getting out and about to meet people and hear their personal stories.”

Shesaid that they will be covering serious stories on the programme, but also making room for the more playful stuff.

“We all need a bit of fun in our day with all that’s going on in the world at the moment.”

The team plans to make the listeners an integral part of the programme, and they also intend to ensure that the voices of today’s young people are heard on the show, with regular features with schools, youth clubs and sports clubs across the region.

They won’t be forgetting the Galway Diaspora either, and plan to check in regularly with emigrant communities in areas like Boston and London during the year.
