Three arrested following arson attack on house with children inside

Gardai are appealing for witnesses following an arson attack on a house in the Ballybane area of Galway City overnight.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to attend a house fire in the Castlepark area of Ballybane shortly before 2am this Thursday morning.

Gardaí are treating the incident as arson and have today arrested two men in their 30s and a juvenile male in connection with this incident.

Five people, one woman and four children were in the house at the time of the fire but all managed to escape from the house without serious injury.

All attended University Hospital Galway for treatment but have since been discharged.

The three arrested are currently detained at North Western Garda Headquarters in Galway under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Castle Park area yesterday evening and who may have observed a black four door Volkswagen Golf to make contact with them.

An Garda Síochána would like to talk to anyone who has video footage in this locality, including dash cam footage, covering a period from midnight and 1.30am.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Gardaí say that the investigation is ongoing.

No COVID patients in the ICU at University Hospital Galway

The number of COVID-19 cases at UHG has continued to fall dramatically, but have risen sharply at Portiuncula Hospital.

There were just 28 confirmed cases at University Hospital Galway as of Wednesday evening, down from 41 at the start of the week.

Of the COVID patients at UHG, there are none being treated in the ICU in the latest HSE figures, down from two on Monday, and four a week ago.

At Portiuncula Hospital however, cases have gone up from 5 on Monday afternoon, to 19 as of yesterday evening.

Two of the patients at Portiuncula Hospital are being treated in the intensive care unit, unchanged in recent days.

Nationwide there were just 580 COVID-19 patients hospitalised in Ireland as of Wednesday evening, of whom 64 are in the ICU.

The Connacht squad for this Friday’s Ulster Interpro has been announced, with Tom Daly returning after a three month absence.

Daly will be of the starting XV at Kingspan Stadium tomorrow, after a three month absence due to a knee injury he sustained against Ulster at the Aviva Stadium.

Joining him in the centre is Sammy Arnold, and Daly is far from the only player returning from absences caused by injury or national service.

The starting lineup also includes Denis Buckley for the first time since June, Conor Fitzgerald & John Porch who were unavailable last week, and Cian Prendergast who has returned from a stint with Ireland as a development player.

It’s a much different squad than lost to Glasgow last weekend, with eleven changes in total.

Buckley is named in a new-look tight five with Shane Delahunt at hooker and Tietie Tuimauga who’s named at tighthead, while Niall Murray and Oisín Dowling are paired together in the second row.

Jarrad Butler captains the side from number 8, with Prendergast and Conor Oliver on the flanks.

In the backs, out-half Conor Fitzgerald is handed his first start of the season with Kieran Marmion alongside him, while a new-look back three features Porch at full-back with Alex Wootton and Peter Sullivan on the wings.

Head Coach Andy Friend said that Connacht are hoping to see a marked improvement on their performance against Glasgow, which he candidly states wasn’t up to snuff.

“We’ve had an honest week with difficult conversations about what happened last weekend,” Friend said.

“The performance wasn’t nearly good enough and we need to see a major improvement tomorrow against a strong Ulster team who are on a good run of form.”

“We’re welcoming back a number of players for various reasons which is always a plus, and we can take confidence from a good record up in Belfast the last few years.”

Connacht and Ulster will meet at Kingspan Stadium this Friday, February 4, with kick-off at 8:15pm.

Plans for city centre social housing development

Galway City Council has issued notice that it intends to seek planning permission for a social housing development in the city centre.

The council intends to make an application to An Bord Pleanála to demolish terraced dwelling houses and all ancillary outbuildings and boundary walls at 17-20 Merchants Road Lower, near to the Spanish Arch.

In their place the council plans to build a new five storey mixed use development with cultural and social housing units.

This will comprise a cultural venue, a café, 12 social housing apartments, a covered central courtyard and an accessible rooftop terrace.

The housing element will comprise 5 one-bedroom apartments and 7 two-bedroom apartments.

A Natura Impact Statement has been prepared in respect of the proposed development.

Detailed documents of the proposed development can be found on the city council website here.

These documents and the Natura Impact Statement can also be viewed at city hall until March 3 from 10am to 1pm, Monday – Friday.

Boil Water Notice issued for Gort area

A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for the some 2,800 homes and businesses in the Gort area.

Irish Water has put in place a boil water notice for customers on the Gort Public Water supply due to a mechanical fault at the treatment plant.

People on the Gort PWS are currently without a water supply due to the fault at the water treatment plant.

These households are advised that repairs should be completed by midday today, and people should commence boiling their water as soon as the supply is restored.

Irish Water has not yet given an estimated timeframe for this warning, only saying that people should boil their water until further notice.

Ronan Daly, Irish Water’s Asset Operations Lead, has acknowledged the impact this notice will have on the community and apologised for the inconvenience to customers.

“We will continue to work closely with Galway County Council and the HSE to monitor the supply and lift the notice as quickly as it is safe to do so and safeguard the supply for the future.”

“Public health is Irish Water’s number one priority and this Boil Water Notice has been put in place as a precaution to protect customers following a mechanical fault at the water treatment plant.”

“Where risks to water quality are identified through Irish Water’s enhanced testing and monitoring programme, Boil Water Notices are issued in order to safeguard public health.”

“In all instances immediate action is taken to address the cause of the issue in order to lift the notice as quickly as possible, in agreement with the HSE.”

Water must be boiled for drinking, drinks made with water, preparation of food not cooked prior to eating, brushing teeth, or making ice.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of an incident near Dominick Street this morning in which a man was hospitalised.

One man has been taken to University Hospital Galway following the incident.

It is not yet clear what the nature of the incident was.

In a statement to Galway Daily, An Garda Síochána said:

“Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of an incident this morning near Dominick Street in Galway.”

“A male has since been taken to University Hospital Galway.”

“No further information is available at this time.”

The much loved Galway International Rally will be back roaring the county this weekend, marking more than 50 years of racing.

Galway’s famed Connacht Hotel is delighted to be serving as the official headquarters of the world renowned race event this weekend.

The international rally was the first major motorsport event to take place annually in Ireland, starting in 1971 and now in its 51st year.

Over the years the event has attracted entrants from England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, the former Czechoslovakia, France, America, Gambia, Belgium, Arabia, Norway and Finland.

This year the rally is reverting to a two day event, based out of the Connacht Hotel this Saturday and Sunday, February 5 & 6.

The action for the 15-stage,two-day event is centred on the town of Loughrea with short road sections between the stages.

It will as usual be the opening round of next seasons Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, and the second round of the Irish Tarmac Historic Rally Championship.

The Connacht Hotel will also be taking part in the excitement, having sponsored a car alongside An Pucan & Corrib Oil.

COVID-19: 5,940 PCR-confirmed cases reported

Galway Daily news 25 percent drop in COVID cases in Galway hospitals

There have been a further 12,560 total cases of COVID-19 from PCR and Antigen tests reported by health officials today.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has notified another 5,940 PCR-confirmed cases of today.

In addition, there have been a further 6,620 positive Antigen tests registered through the HSE portal reported today.

There have now been a total of 6,228 deaths related to COVID-19 in Ireland since the start of the pandemic. This includes 92 deaths newly notified in the past week.

As of this morning there were 630 people in the country hospitalised with COVID, of whom 65 are in the ICU.

The COVID-19 data hub provides detailed information about the disease in the community, including the rollout of the booster campaign.

There have been 115,366 lab tests completed in the past week, 30.1% of which have tested positive for the virus.

A total of 2,705,792 booster vaccine doses have been administered as of yesterday, with 3,001 jabs given on Tuesday alone.

Taoiseach and Galway GAA lead tributes to late Noel Treacy

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Galway GAA have led the tributes paid to former Galway TD Noel Treacy, who has passed away at the age of 70.

Taoiseach Martin said that Treacy, who served as a Fianna Fail TD for the better part of 30 years, was a “good friend and an outstanding public representative”.

Noel Treacy first came to Dáil Eireann in 1982 after winning a byelection for Galway East, and was subsequently reelected every time, until he decided not to contest the 2011 general election.

He brought  “energy, warmth, and dedication” to his Ministerial roles, Micheál Martin said, referring to his position as a junior minister in six administrations.

He added that Noel was a “dedicated colleague” and loyal family man, who had an “infectious enthusiasm” and a great ability to connect with people.

Galway GAA has also paid tribute to Noel Treacy, who was appointed Chairperson of the County Board in 2013, and expressed sympathies for his family.

“As well as serving as County Chairperson, Noel was a fellow Padraig Pearses clubman and was a driving force of our club at all levels as a player, manager, administrator and a constant supporter of the black and white.”

“His passion and energy for all things Galway was always clearly evident. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the whole Galway GAA community.”

The Taoiseach’s full statement reads:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Minister Noel Treacy, a good friend and an outstanding public representative, who served both his community and country with great distinction.

“Representing Galway East in the Dáil from 1982 right through to 2011, Noel brought great energy, warmth and dedication to his many Ministerial roles across a range of departments including Finance, Justice, Transport, Enterprise, Trade and Employment, the Department of Taoiseach and Agriculture and Food.

“As Minister for Science and Technology, he played a significant role in building our modern economy, and as Minister of Europe he worked tirelessly to make Ireland an effective and constructive member of the EU.

“Noel was a dedicated family man and loyal colleague.

“His capacity to connect with the people he served, wherever they were, and infectious enthusiasm leaves a lasting legacy on Irish public life.

“My deepest sympathies go to his wife Mary, his children Joan, Emer, Lisa and Rory and to all his extended family and friends today.”

Gardaí investigating after car and house damaged in arson attack

Gardaí are investigating after a car and a house were damaged as a result of an arson attack in Galway City over the weekend.

In the early hours of Sunday, January 30, a car was set alight while parked in front of a house at Garran Ard, Doughiska.

A black Audi A6 and the front of a house were damaged in this incident, which occurred at approximately 1:30am.

Gardaí have confirmed that no-one was injured as a result of this arson.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who who may have been in the area between the hours of midnight and 2am on January 30 and who may have information to contact them.

They are also appealing to anyone who may have video footage including dash cam footage covering this location during this period of time to make contact them.

Anyone with information can contact Oranmore Garda Station on 091-388030, their local Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Fixtures have been announced for both the Galway senior hurling and football sides in the Allianz League this weekend.

The Galway footballers are first up this weekend, when they will face off against Down in Round 2 of the League. The match will take place in Newry, starting at 5pm on Saturday.

The senior hurlers are starting their campaign off with a home game against Offaly at Pearse Stadium this Sunday at 2pm.

Tickets for the football and hurling matches can be purchased online here and here respectively, or at selected Centra and Supervalu stores.

Match tickets will not be available to purchase at the gates this weekend.

For those who can’t make it in person, the football game will also be livestreamed on GaaGo.ie

Tributes paid on passing of former Galway TD Noel Treacy

Former Galway TD and titan in county politics and sports Noel Treacy has passed away at the age of 70.

The Gurteen, Ballinsloe native spent almost three decades in politics after first becoming a Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East in a 1982 byelection.

In his long and successful career he served as a junior minister in six different government administrations.

He retired from politics ahead of the 2011 general election, but continued to be active in the county. Treacy was appointed Chairman of the Galway GAA county board in 2013.

Current TD for the Galway East constituency said that Noel Treacy was someone who cared deeply about the needs of the people he represented, and placed them at the heart of his work.

“He exemplified the very best in public service and was an exceptionally talented man.”

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that he was “deeply saddened” to hear of the former TDs passing, calling him a good friend, and outstanding public representative.

“He cared deeply about his community and country, serving both with energy and commitment.”

Treacy is survived by his wife Mary, his four children Joan, Emer, Lisa and Rory, grandchildren, and extended family.

More time sought to build 88 houses in Headford

A further extension of planning permission is being sought for the construction of 88 houses in Headford, first approved more than a decade ago.

Solus Holdings Ltd is seeking an extension of duration for planning permission for an estate at Cong Road, Headford.

This development will comprise a mix of detached, semi-detached, and terraced dwellings ranging from two to four bed units.

The development will also include a creche, landscaping, and associated site works.

Planning permission was first granted by Galway County Council in July of 2009, and two Extension of Duration applications have been granted since then.

The EOD application states that the developer began work in February of 2019, but was unable to progress further due to uncertainty and restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Delays relating to this uncertainty [were] further compounded by issues relating to the availability of materials and the required labour resultant from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The developer now expects work to be completed by the end of 2023. The current planning permission expired at the end of last December.

Solus Holdings Ltd is seeking a two year extension of the current planning permission to complete the housing estate.

Works completed on the site to date include securing the boundary, creating temporary access points, stripping the topsoil, as well as ground works for the access road and four of the homes.

Galway County Council is due to make a decision on whether to further extend the planning permission for this housing estate by February 25.

Almost 1,000 patients on trolleys in Galway last month

There were almost 1,000 patients on trolleys in Galway’s hospitals last month in one of the worst Januarys on record.

University Hospital Galway there were 738 patients without a bed in January, six times higher than the same month last year.

The only January on record since 2006 that was worse than this year at UHG came in 2020.

Portiuncula Hospital, which had a streak of the worst months of overcrowding on record in 2021, also experienced a very bad month.

The 226 patients on trolleys at Portiuncula in January is a 14% increase on the figures for 2021, and only exceeded by the numbers for 2017.

Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said that we cannot return to the pre-pandemic “business as usual” status quo for chronic overcrowding.

“It is not acceptable to us that chronic overcrowding is allowed to continue while COVID is still rampant in many of our hospitals.”

“Our members are frankly embarrassed and tired of apologising to patients for the poor standard of care environments.”

The INMO is calling for the curtailment of elective surgery to continue until the end of this month in order to avoid worsening overcrowding.

Nationwide there were 8,636 patients on trolleys in Irish hospitals last month, 132% higher than in January 2021.

University Hospital Galway was the fourth worst affected in the country, behind UHL (1,300), Letterkenny UH (817), and Cork UH (750).

Phil Ní Sheaghdha said that the HSE must issue guidance to ensure “chronic overcrowding” does not continue in the coming months.

“Bespoke plans should be produced for hospitals where chronic overcrowding is a persistent feature of the hospital environment.”

Ros a Mhíl Harbour getting €25 million expansion

Approval has been given for a €25 million expansion of Ros a Mhíl Harbour to add new deep water quay facilities.

Minister for Agriculture and the Marine Charlie McConalogue announced during a visit to the fishing town that the government has signed off on building a new deep water quay.

The new quay facility will be built at the state-owned Fishery Harbour Centre, and funded through the Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme.

“Our Fishery Harbour Centres are critical to the seafood industry and Ros an Mhíl is a clear example of how these facilities stimulate economic activity for the surrounding rural coastal communities,” Minister McConalogue said.

He added that this is an example of the commitment to projects that will address the impact of Brexit on the fishing and seafood sector.

In 2020 the bulk of fish landings at Ros a Mhíl Fishery Harbour Centre were from Irish vessels, and were valued at €7 million.

The new deep water quay will provide an addition 200m of quayside to the 325m that presently exists.

It will extend the depth of the harbour by 70% in order to accommodate larger fishing vessels, and add 4ha of land potential to the Harbour Centre.

These combined new facilities are meant to bring the Connemara town more in line with the fishing facilities that are currently available at Killybegs and Castletownbere.

Minister McConalogue said in his visit on Tuesday that he had been impressed on previous occasions by the commitment of local stakeholders to improving the town.

“When I visited last October I was impressed by the ambitions held here in the local community for Ros an Mhíl.”

“There is huge potential for downstream development and jobs when this project comes on line and I have every confidence that this opportunity will be embraced and harnessed for the benefit of Connemara.”

Planning permission for the project was granted in 2017, and the Department has now decided to proceed with procurement for detailed design of the quay.

It is hoped that the project, which is expected to take up to 28 months to build, will go to tender for construction later this year.

Gardaí are investigating an incident of a man exposing himself in a public park area during the day in Galway last week.

The indecent exposure by a male took place at Renville Park, Oranmore last Thursday January 27.

The incident took place in the middle of the day at approximately 12:45pm according to Gardaí.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have information to get in touch with them.

Connacht Rugby have made an exciting acquisition from Leinster with the announcement of the signing of Josh Murphy on a two year deal.

The 26-year old, who can play in the back row or second row, has made 52 appearances for Leinster, including starting in two pool games in this year’s Heineken Champions Cup.

Murphy has also been capped at Ireland U20 level, and will give Andy Friend’s side further depth across a number of positions heading into next season.

As to the decision to head west, Josh Murphy said that he is looking for a “new environment” to be a part of at this point, and is looking forward to coming to the Sportsground next summer.

“And hopefully try and put my hand up to get out on the pitch every week,” Murphy adds, “Playing matches regularly is what I love about this sport.”

He said that Connacht Head Coach and his team are “building something special”, which comes out in the team’s style of play.

For his part, Andy Friend said that Murphy’s arrival will be a further boost for the club, saying that he has “all the attributes” to be an important player for the next two years.

“Physically he’s very strong on and off the ball and coupled with an excellent skill set he is a player that very much suits our playing style.

“We’re delighted he’s chosen to come to Connacht and help add to the excellent squad we are already building here.”

COVID-19: 4,208 PCR-confirmed cases reported

Galway Daily news Galway hospitals see COVID cases double in recent weeks

There have been a further 10,618 total cases of COVID-19 from PCR and Antigen tests reported by health officials today.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has notified a further 4,208 PCR-confirmed cases.

In addition, another 6,410 positive antigen tests registered through the HSE portal have been reported.

As of this morning there were 624 people in the country hospitalised with COVID-19, of whom 66 are in the ICU.

The COVID-19 data hub provides detailed information about the disease in the community, including the rollout of the booster campaign.

There have been 115,451 lab tests completed in the past week, 29.8% of which have tested positive for the virus.

A total of 2,700,458 booster vaccine doses have been administered as of yesterday, with 2,162 jabs given on Monday.
