Our run of good weather this week is set to continue over the weekend, with warm temperatures and clear skies forecast.

Met Eireann is forecasting a beautiful weekend to enjoy before the early summer we’ve been enjoying comes to an end next week.

Today, some light cloud cover will give way to a prolonged stretch of sunshine in the afternoon and early evening.

Highest temperatures of 17 degrees today, with a light westerly breeze freshening things.

Headed into tonight, things will stay warm and calm, with lows of 6 degrees overnight inland, but a more balmy 12 degrees in coastal area.

Saturday will be the brightest part of the weekend, with sunny skies burning off any lingering mist in the early morning.

The sun will shine throughout most of the day, with some scattered light cloud cover in places.

Temperatures will reach highs of 15 to 17 degrees tomorrow, with a light westerly breeze turning moderate in the day, before dying down again.

Sunday will continue the good run of sunshine, with a little more cloud throughout parts of the day, but still very balmy for this time of year.

A light variable breeze will be present during the day, with the mercury reaching highs of 13 to 16 degrees.

Come next week, Met Eireann is currently forecasting a shift in the weather, with cooler conditions and less sunshine, though Monday is also expected to have some late sun in the evening.

The rain is also expected to make an unwelcome return mid-next week according to the forecaster.

UHG is Ireland’s second most overcrowded hospital today

UHG is the second most overcrowded hospital in Ireland today, with 44 patients waiting on trolleys in the emergency department.

At Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe there are seven patients without beds, five in the emergency department, and two in the wards.

Figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show that there are a total of 475 patients in Irish hospitals on trolleys today.

The worst affected hospital is UH Limerick, where there are 51 patients without beds.

Both hospitals are also coping with large numbers of COVID cases, which have begun to surge again in recent days.

There were 63 confirmed cases at UHG as of Thursday evening, with another 29 at Portiuncula Hospital.

Of those, three cases in Ballinasloe and two in Galway are being treated in the intensive care unit.

Portiuncula has just one general and one ICU bed available, while UHG has just no intensive care beds available.

Lapping the Lake at Lough Derg

Take a lap around the lake at Lough Derg in support of the lifesaving RNLI, while taking in some of the region’s breathtaking scenery.

The 130km Lap the Lake fundraising cycle, organised by the Lough Derg RNLI, will take place this May.

The cycle will start and finish at the RNLI Lifeboat Station in Dromineer, and the full circuit of the lake will give the participants the chance to take in some breathtaking scenery.

The route will take them around the outstanding beauty of the lake and River Shannon through counties Tipperary, Clare and Galway.

As part of the safety measures there will be First Aid, out riders, marshals and bike maintenance provided throughout the course.

There will be a comfort stop at Le Bateau, Emerald Star Line in Portumna, where tea, coffee and a lunch pack will be provided for participants.

Lough Derg Yacht Club is providing parking, toilet, and shower facilities for participants.

Niamh McCutcheon, Chairperson of the Lough Derg RNLI Fundraising Branch, said that the cycle is being widely supported.

The committee stress that the cycle is a non-competitive event and, encouraging cycling enthusiasts to register.

Niamh McCutcheon says it “promises to be a fun day covering the very picturesque Lough Derg, an area for which our lifeboat volunteers provide a rescue service 24/7 365 days of the year”.

The €65 entry fee includes a Tee shirt, goody bag, a reusable lifeboat water bottle and many other treats.

A delicious meal costing €10pp and bar facilities will be available at the Yacht Club following the cycle.

The iconic Canning Hurleys in Portumna has announced that it is closing down after 11 years due to supply chain problems.

Run by the Canning family, who include Galway’s legendary hurling stars Oliver and Joe Canning, the business thanked all of their staff and customers, and said that this was an extremely difficult decision to make.

The business said that there has been great difficulty in securing quality ash planks, and having them delivered, due to supply chain issues.

“As you know, quality is at the core of every Canning Hurley we produce,” the closure announcement said.

“We cannot compromise the quality of our products to continue to meet demand with the current ash supply issues potentially due to worsen in the future.”

“We also do not wish to pass on any compromised quality issues to you our customers as we value the positive relationships that we have built with all Canning Hurley customers over the past 11 years.”

Due to the “ongoing and persistent” ash dieback disease affecting their supply, they said that they are no longer able to produce the same great quality hurleys.

They thanked customers for their support through the years, which has brought “great joy” to see their hurleys on pitches at every level.

“It gave our staff and family great joy to see our Canning Hurleys being used from underage blitzes throughout the country right up to Senior All-Irland Hurling Final day in Croke Park.”

“It was our pleasure as a family to produce quality hand-made Hurley’s for the hurling and camogie communities across Ireland and further afield.”

The final day of business for the iconic hurley store will be at the end of the month on Thursday, March 31.

File for DPP on organised crime arrest

Galway Daily news missing teen found safe

A file will go to the DPP in connection with the arrest of a man as part of an investigation into organised crime in the west of Ireland.

The man in his early 40s was arrested on Wednesday morning and detained at Sligo Garda Station.

He has since been released and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

This is the fourth person who has been arrested in connection with the organised crime investigation in the Sligo/Leitrim Division.

Gardaí arrested a man in his mid-30s at Dublin Airport on Tuesday, January 11, and this man was later charged and appeared before the courts.

Two others, a man and a woman, were also arrested on January 18 and February 20 as part of the investigation.

One of these, a man in his 20s, was arrested in Galway before being detained in Sligo.

Both were later released without charge and files are being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Lidl has opened its doors to customers at its brand-new store in Knocknacarra this morning.

The store in the Galway city suburb will create over 30 permanent jobs, and sees a local investment of more than €13 million.

With a 1,546sqm shop floor, high ceilings and wide aisles, the new Lidl also has a large bakery area with freshly baked breads and pastries.

Commenting on the opening, Pauline McLoughlin, store manager at Lidl Knocknacarra, said that the shop offers customers an even better experience with its spacious design, ample parking and sustainability features throughout.

“The new store will be a positive addition to the local area of Knocknacarra making our fantastic range of top-quality produce available at the best possible prices,” she said.

The environmentally friendly Knocknacarra store has roof mounted solar panels and will be powered by 100% green renewable electricity.

Canney welcomes school secretaries voting for offer of improved conditions

Galway East TD Seán Canney has welcomed school secretaries voting in favour of accepting the Department of Education’s offer of improved pay and conditions.

The Department of Education, school management bodies and Fórsa have been engaging on a claim relating to terms and conditions for grant-funded school secretaries.

Deputy Canney explained that under the terms of this new agreement, school secretaries’ pay rates will move to a scale which is aligned with the Clerical Officer Grade III pay scale on a pro-rata basis according to a secretary’s current working pattern.

“These pay increases will be backdated to 1st September 2021 while the terms and conditions also cater for lower-paid but longer serving secretaries to be placed higher up the salary scale,” he said.

A new contract will give the option to secretaries that they no longer need to apply to the Department of Social Protection for payment of benefits for periods when they are not working due to school holidays.

Proposals have also been made in relation to issues surrounding annual leave, maternity benefit, and sick pay while an allocation of 22 days annual leave (on a pro rata basis according to a secretary’s current working pattern) is also proposed.

Chronic overcrowding continues at Galway hospitals

Fifty-four people are on trolleys in Galway’s public hospitals today, according to the latest figures by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

University Hospital Galway has 43 patients waiting for a bed and Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe has a further 11 people on trolleys this morning.

Only University Hospital Limerick has worse overcrowding today with 67 patients on trolleys, while Letterkenny University Hospital and Cork University Hospital also have 43 people waiting for a bed.

Speaking yesterday, INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said that there has been no let-up in pressure in hospitals across the country.

“With nearly 1,400 COVID cases in our hospitals as well as the huge levels of overcrowding, it is not acceptable to our members that there has not been direct intervention from government to alleviate this problem,” she said.

“Our members have been sounding the alarm to Government every day about the chronic overcrowding. The situation we now find ourselves in deserves immediate political intervention.

“It is not good enough for members of Government to comment on the situation our members find themselves in, we need to see direct action that will ease the pressure starting with the curtailing of non-emergency elective activity.

“Overcrowding adds stress for staff and worsens patient care. It is high-risk in normal times, but even more so during a pandemic.”

Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte has chaired a meeting of disability groups to discuss the impact of the war in Ukraine and its effect on people with disabilities in the country.

Organisations at the meeting detailed the work being done to respond to the crisis across civil society organisations, both nationally and internationally.

Attendees discussed the problems faced by people with disability fleeing conflict, along with the challenges for people with disability who remain in Ukraine.

These include the need for medical support, assistive aids and devices, and bespoke accommodation needs.

“We know that in conflict scenarios people who are more vulnerable suffer additional hardship,” said Minister Rabbitte.

“We must do everything we can to support people with disabilities who arrive seeking accommodation and supports, and we also must consider how we support those who stay in Ukraine, or are currently unable to leave.”

The Fianna Fáil TD said that coordination between the government, its agencies and civil society groups and organisations is important during such conflict to ensure that everybody is working together to support people as they arrive into Ireland, including people with disabilities.

“Meeting our disability organisations underlined the challenge in accommodating people with additional needs but also showed me that we have the will to find solutions,” she said.

“Working together with civil society we will do everything in our power to support those affected by the war”.

People Before Profit have said that workers and social welfare recipients need income increases to cope with what they have described as ‘an attack’ on their living standards.

Figures recently published by the CSO show inflation is currently at 5.6%, with the prices of many essential goods and services increasing even faster.

The party’s Galway representative Adrian Curran said that the average weekly earnings for workers increased by 2% last year.

“In the last twelve months, the cost of living has increased by more than this in all essential areas,” he said.

“The cost of food has increased 3%, rents by 8.5%, mortgage interest by 4.1%, electricity by 22.4%, gas by 27.8%, home heating oil by 53.7%, and petrol and diesel by 31.4%.”

Mr Curran said that people are being hit with pay cuts in real terms and their standard of living is reducing as a result.

“People are being forced to choose between essentials like food and heating,” he said.

“Workers need pay increases of at least 10% to stay ahead of inflation. Workers should talk to their trade union and get together with their co-workers to put in claims for a pay increase.”

The awards recognise the Irish TV industry for achievements and excellence in creative production for the year.

Food and drinks producers invited to join Food Academy

Food and drink producers from across Galway are invited to join the Food Academy programme to help grow their businesses.

Now in its ninth year, it is a unique food development programme between the 31 Local Enterprise Offices, including Local Enterprise Office Galway, SuperValu and Bord Bia.

Participants in Food Academy receive training in food safety, market research and branding, marketing, finance, sustainability and business development.

Some local companies which have taken part in the past include Gran Gran’s Foods, Solaris Botanicals Tea, Colleran’s Butchers, Kylemore Farmhouse Cheese and Aran Islands Goats Cheese.

The Food Academy programme currently supports 290 Irish food and drink producers generating €200m in sales.

In 2020, there was a 6% growth in Food Academy product purchases at SuperValu stores with participants delivering €30m in sales.

“Since it was started up nine years ago by the Local Enterprise Offices, SuperValu and Bord Bia, the Food Academy programme has been hugely successful, going from strength to strength,” said Breda Fox, Head of Enterprise with Local Enterprise Office Galway.

She added that the Food Academy is part of a suite of Local Enterprise Office supports designed for food and drink entrepreneurs in Ireland, such as the Digital School of Food and Food Starter programmes, both aimed at getting those with food ideas off the ground.

“As local food and drink producers grow their sales through these programmes, Local Enterprise Office Galway is on hand to support their expansion plans through further training, mentoring and financial assistance.”

The Food Academy Programme is now open for applications until Friday 8 April.

Gardaí are appealing to the public for assistance in location a young man reported missing from in Galway.

24-year-old Haasher Warraich has been missing from his home in the Headford Road area since Saturday, March 19.

Haasher is described as being 5’ 10” in height, with a broad build, black hair and brown eyes.

When last seen, Haasher was wearing a black t-shirt and black tracksuit bottoms.

Gardaí say that they and Hassher’s family are concerned for his well-being.

Anyone with information on Haasher’s whereabouts is asked to contact Galway Garda Station 091 538000 on the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

The awards nominees, announced this week, were chosen from among almost 100 entries in ten categories this year.

Síle’s powerful documentary Síle Seoige: Deireadh Tochta which explored the grief, hopes, fears, and frustrations of those who have gone through miscarriage is nominated in the ‘Factual Single’ category.

First broadcast on TG4 in April of last year, the hour-long documentary film was inspired by Síle’s own experience having opened up about her miscarriage on social media in 2019.

She was overwhelmed by response that she received, describing it as ‘an avalanche’ of replies from people who had been through the same thing.

In documentary, produced by Tyrone Productions, Síle met women, couples, doctors and service providers in an effort to investigate the medical, emotional, psychological, and sociological elements of miscarriage, to help society understand it better.

The winners of this year’s RTS Ireland Television Awards will be announced on April 12 at an event in the RDS Concert Hall, hosted by Bláthnaid Treacy and Nuala Carey.

GMIT Letterfrack hosting national carpentry competition finals — Matilda Anderson in WSI Carpentry final at GMIT Letterfrack

GMIT Letterfrack is playing host to the national finals of a prestigious Cabinetmaking and Carpentry competition, where people are also fighting for a chance to go to Shanghai.

The finals of the WorldSkills Ireland National Competition 2021, which were delayed due to COVID-19 have been taking place at the Connemara campus this week, and are due to finish on Friday.

Six competitors are competing in both the Cabinetmaking and Carpentry finals and in the 2022 WorldSkills Selection process.

Due to the rescheduling of the finals, they also coincide with the Team Ireland Selection for the 2022 International Competition in Shanghai next October.

The competitions promote and showcase the emerging skill and talent of young students and apprentices working or studying within the wood and construction industries in Ireland.

The winners in each competition will be presented with a prestigious Silver Medal at an Award Ceremony in September.

Along with success in the national competitions, GMIT students have consistently won Medallions for Excellence by representing Ireland in Cabinetmaking in the WorldSkills International Competitions held bi-annually.

Planning application for westside Primary Care Centre expected this year

Galway Daily news Plans submitted for new Galway City Primary Care Centre

A planning application for a primary care centre on the Seamus Quirke Road is expected to be lodged in the first half of this year.

Councillor Martina O’Connor submitted a question on the progress made to date on delivering this primary care centre for the Regional Health Forum meeting this week.

Joe Hoare, Assistant National Director of Estates at the HSE, said that they are currently engaging with the successful bidder on proposals to deliver the centre.

“The HSE has been reviewing its overall accommodation requirements which
have increased,” his written answer said.

“The current proposed transaction was approved by the HSE Board at the board meeting on January 28, 2022 last.”

“Further engagement between the HSE and the developer in respect of the scheme design is planned over the coming months.”

It is the intention of the HSE and bidder that a planning application for the medical centre would be made around the end of Q2 this year.
