Met Éireann has issued a status yellow wind warning for Galway and four other counties in the west for this afternoon and evening.
The forecasters say very strong southwest winds veering northwest are expected today, with the strongest winds expected at the coast.
There will be some severe gusts along with a possibility of wave overtopping and Met Éireann says that hazardous driving conditions are expected in exposed areas.
The warning begins at 1pm and will be lifted at 9pm today, Wednesday.
Donegal, Mayo, Leitrim and Sligo are also affected by the status yellow wind warning.
