The number of COVID-19 patients hospitalised at UHG has reached a new record high for the second day in a row.

The latest figures from the HSE show 25 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at University Hospital Galway as of 8pm on Thursday.

This is the highest daily figure seen at the hospital since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and follows on from the previous highest level of 22 cases reported yesterday.

Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe is faring better than Galway, with just one confirmed case as of Thursday evening.

There are a further seven suspected cases at University Hospital Galway, for which test results are awaited.

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has continued to climb nationwide, with 476 cases in hospital as of Thursday evening.

There are 41 confirmed cases in Intensive Care Units, but only one of those is a patient from UHG.

On Thursday evening the Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said that we are now back in the mitigation stage of dealing with the coronavirus, rather than focusing on containment.

“This disease is now widespread in our communities and as a result we are asking everyone to behave as if they are a close contact.”
