Tonight will be the coldest night of winter so far with temperatures as low as -7 degrees Celcius possible in parts of the county.

Met Éireann say it will be ‘exceptionally cold’ tonight (Tuesday), with widespread severe frost and ice forming under largely clear skies and some freezing fog patches are possible.

Today is set to be another very cold cold day  with frost and ice clearing very slowly and persisting in some areas – but it will remain sunny and dry across the county.

The highest temperatures this afternoon will be between 1 and 4 degrees, in light to moderate north to northeast breezes.

The lowest temperature of this winter so far was recorded in Roscommon last Saturday night at -5.9 degrees, but tonight could break that record as the cold snap continues.

As for tomorrow (Wednesday), it will be bitterly cold once again with frost, ice and patchy freezing fog clearing very slowly, but persisting all day in places.
