A Status Orange Low Temperature / Ice Warning has been issued for Galway again this evening as freezing temperatures are expected to continue.

The warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, and Connacht will come into effect at 6pm this evening and remain in place until 11am Thursday.

Extremely cold weather will see further widespread frost and ice, exacerbating existing dangerous travelling conditions.

Many roads in the county and city have been made treacherous by ice today, and motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution.

Athenry weather station recorded lowest temperatures of -4C last night, and temperatures could drop even lower tonight.

A status yellow warning for the entire country will remain in place until midday on Friday when the cold snap is currently expected to start easing.

Met Eireann is forecasting a respite by the weekend as temperatures begin to rise above 0C again, with the cold snap truly breaking next week.

Before that, there may be some more flurries of snow and sleet in Galway on Friday morning.
