The 2018 Connaught Finals of the Aldi Community Games will take place on Saturday, 14th July across County Leitrim as 13 Galway teams look to secure provincial silverware on top of the domestic titles they’ve already won.

For two teams, they can prepare for the National Finals in the University of Limerick from the 17th – 19th August as they claimed Connaught championships uncontested.

Bullaun/New Inn won the Galway under 14 camogie crown in Ballinderrreen in June and they automatically advance to Limerick.  And they are joined the Clarinbridge’s under 11 hurlers who don’t need to line out either.

However, for three Galway sides, they must contest preliminaries in the week beforehand to ensure they are part of the festivities.

Cortoon/Lavally wil host Roscommon’s Drum/Clonown in the Boys under 15 Futsal preliminary and the winner will advance to take on Mayo’s Ardagh in the semi-final at the Carrick-on-Shannon Complex.

Athenry’s Girls under 15 soccer team beat Mayo’s Kilmurry 4-1 on Saturday (7th July) to book their place in the semi-finals.  They take on Leitrim’s Manorhamilton in Ballinamore FC.

But Oranmore/Maree must make two trips if they are to be provincial champions.  They head north to Mayo’s Turlough Tower in the under 10 Gaelic Football mixed competition with the winners getting to grace Pairc Sean Mac Diarmuda in Carrick-on-Shannon against Sligo’s Coolera.

Eight other Galway teams are guaranteed action on Saturday in venues including Carrick-on-Shannon, Ballinamore and Drumshanbo.

Annaghdown and Knocknacarra compete in the under 13 Boys and Girls Futsal respectively.  Dunmore/Garrafrauns/Kiltevna and Claregalway/Lackagh are in Girls Gaelic Football action at under 12 and under 14 level.

Athenry also see action in the Girls under 13 Rounders; Clarinbridge compete in the Boys under 12 soccer; and Kilnadeema/Leitrim have two Spikeball teams in the Boys and Girls under 14 competitions.

A sporting occasion seeing county champions across Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon, it’s one of the biggest underage events in the West of Ireland and no doubt, many teams will return to Galway Saturday eagerly anticipating a shot at All-Ireland glory next month.
