Galway dominated the Camogie All-Stars awards this week, where eight players came away with an award, as well as the top prize.

Half-Forward Aoife Donohoe was the winner of the Camogie Association/GPA Senior Players’ Player of the Year award.

In total, Galway are represented through goalkeeper Sarah Healy, defenders Shauna Healy and Sarah Dervan, midfielder Niamh Kilkenny and forwards Aoife Donohue, Siobhan Mc Grath, Orlaith Mc Grath and Ailish O’Reilly.

Along with the players’ success, manager Cathal Murray won the Manager of the Year award during the refixed All-Stars Awards banquet in the Osprey Hotel, Naas on Friday.

Galway are also featured in the Soaring Stars Award through forward Ava Lynskey.

The remaining All-Stars Awards went to Cork and Kilkenny respectively, with the Rebels earning three All-Stars Awards, and Kilkenny taking home four awards.

Speaking at the event, Uachtarán Hilda Breslin said, “It is wonderful to be back sharing this prestigious event with you all in person and celebrating our players for their high quality and thrilling performances last year.”

“Congratulations to all our winning players and to all our nominees on this wonderful recognition for your efforts in your county shirt last year.”

Multi-million Corncrake conservation project launched

a multi-million project to increase the Corncrake population along the west and northwest coast of Ireland was launched this week.

The Corncrake LIFE aims to revive the fortunes of the Corncrake in Galway, Mayo, and Donegal in coastal and island locations.

By the end of its five year period, the project aims to deliver a 20% boost to the bird’s population levels, which have decline dramatically.

Since the 1970s, the Corncrake population has fallen by as much as 85%, with a similar decrease in their habitat range, effectively confining them to Connacht and Donegal, including offshore islands.

Only 188 examples of calling males were recorded across Ireland in 2021, of which around 20 were in Connemara.

Dr. John Carey of the National Parks and Wildlife Service, who manages the project, said that it will primarily focus on habitat creation and restoration, though some “new and innovative” conservation approaches will also be attempted.

“The project will be developing knowledge exchange groups with farmers and advisors to share information on how to create and maintain high quality corncrake habitats”.

It will also “ensure that landowners can maximise their potential to receive rewards under the results-based pilot scheme.”

The project will see the LIFE team working with farmers and landowners to improve the landscape for the highly endangered bird.

Measures will includes creating and maintaining areas of early and late cover, wildlife friendly mowing of grass, provision of refuge areas during meadow harvesting and incentivising later cutting dates.

Locally-based field officers will provide guidance, direction and support to landowners, and community engagement efforts will include targeted schools programmes.

The project was originally supposed to commence in January of 2020, after securing funding the previous December, shortly before the COVID pandemic hit.

The €5.9 million budget for the projects includes €4.3 million from the EU.

The project was launched on Friday by Ministers of State Malcolm Noonan and Pippa Hackett.

Minister Hackett said “I am delighted that the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is a key partner in the Corncrake LIFE project.”

“My Department’s involvement reflects our increasing awareness that we need a more a cooperative approach to agri-ecology in our landscape.”

The project is a collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, GMIT, Údarás na Gaeltachta and Fota Wildlife Park.

Tech solutions will explore innovations such as flushing bars fitted to tractors to scare birds away from mowers, thermal imaging drones to find nests, and passive acoustic monitoring using high-tech microphones in an attempt to help locate the highly elusive birds.

A public consultation period on the long term future of the water supply for much of east Galway has been extended to include the first week of April.

Irish Water has been working on the draft Regional Water Resource Plan Eastern and Midlands (RWRP-EM), and associated environmental reports.

This are largely encompasses counties in the east and midlands, but also includes parts of east Galway county, including Ballinasloe and Ahascragh.

The plan seeks to ensure a sustainable for the region over the short, middle, and long term of the next 25 years.

Documents related to the draft plan can be downloaded from Irish Water’s website, and public submissions can be made up to April 8.

The plan for the area including east Galway estimated that leakage reduction targets could result in 343m³ of water being saved every day in the Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, Rahan, and Athlone area.

Interim solutions in the plan would include upgrades to the Ahascragh and Ballinasloe water treatment plants, with the Ahascragh borehole refurbished.

Meeting the long term demands for the area would involve drawing more water from the River Suck to supply Ballinasloe, and developing a new ground water source for Ahascragh.

The High Court has cleared the way for a massive housing development of 121 houses and apartments in Barna, after rejecting a challenge to planning permission.

Burkeway secured approval from An Bord Pleanála for the €35 million housing development at Truskey East, Truskey West, Freeport and Ahaglugger in Barna in February, 2021.

The breakdown of housing in the plans consists of 52 houses, 37 of which are three-bed and 15 of which are four-bed houses; 36 duplex units across five blocks; and 33 apartments in four blocks.

The estate will also include a creche with outdoor play areas, footpath connectivity along the L-1321 road, communal open spaces, and a park along Truskey Stream.

A challenge to the board’s decision was brought to the High Court by Heather Hill management company, a representative body of Cnoc Fraoigh.

However, in a decision made last week and published online, the High Court rejected the issues raised in the challenge, which related to alleged flooding risk on the site, and potential impacts on protected sites.

The High Court had previously sided with Heather Hill in July 2019, overturning approval given to Burkeway for 197 homes in the same area.

Two Galway singers will receive the highest honours of traditional music at this year’s TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards.

The Gradam Ceoil 2022 will be taking place in Dublin for the first time in the awards’ history next month.

Sarah Ghriallais grew up Muiceanach Idir Dhá Sháile in the Conamara Gaeltacht, steeped in the tradition of sean-nós music.

She won Corn Uí Riada at Oireachtas na Gaeilge in 1984, an award won eight times since by various members of the Griallais family; her sisters Nan and Nora and more recently, her son, Michael Frank Ó Confhaola and her niece Celia Ní Fhátharta.

Helping to keep this oral musical traditional alive, Sarah was appointed the Sean-Nós Singer in Residence at NUIG in 2017.

Her songs have been recorded by Cló Iar–Chonnacht and most recently ‘Idir Dhá Sháile 2’ by Gael Linn.

The most noted songs of her repertoire are ‘Táilliúr a’Mhagadh’, ‘Eileanóir na Rún’, ‘Póg Bhideog’ and ‘Amhrán Chamuis’.

She will be named the best Singer 2022 at the annual TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards, which pay homage to those who have helped to strengthen and preserve traditional music in Ireland.

Also on the night, Galway born singer and founding member of Dé Dannan Doleres Keane will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Delores is described as having one of the most “distinctive, soulful, and sweet” voices of our generation.

She was influenced growing up by the singing of her aunts Sarah and Rita, who raised her from the age of four.

She began her professional singing career with Dé Dannan in 1975 where her unique, soulful, and emotive voice was heard across the globe.

Delores’ work with John Faulkner brought new arrangements to the tradition that was to continue through the 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Her recordings with The Reel Union Band, ‘Solid Ground and ‘Lion in a Cage’ were ground-breaking.

She has collaborated with Emmylou Harris, The Chieftains, Paul Brady in song from the Irish tradition and other traditions.

The awards ceremony will air live on TG4 on Easter Sunday, April 17 at 9:30pm from the National Concert Hall.

Galway Daily news Minister warns of risks from illegal land burning

A status orange fire warning issued by the Department of Agriculture is in place amid dry sunny weather this weekend.

The warning states that there is a high risk of fire this weekend in areas with hazardous fuels such as dead grass and shrubs like heather and gorse.

This arises from the current, high pressure dominated weather patterns the department said.

“An increase in fire risk can be expected through the coming weekend as these conditions persist.”

“Current ignition risks appear to be mainly associated burning of vegetation in upland areas,” the warning states.

This alert state will be in place until early next week, lasting to midday on Monday, March 28.

The public are advised not to light any fires in and around forests of open land, and to not attempt to interfere with any fires they find.

Forest owners and people who live in country areas are asked to be extra vigilant regarding any potential fires.

Galway Daily rugby Four changes made to starting XV for Connacht v Glasgow

The Connacht squad that will take on Leinster at the Sportsground tomorrow in the URC has been announced.

There have been seven changes made to the side since the disastrous outing against Edinburgh earlier this month.

Denis Buckley, Niall Murray, Jarrad Butler, Kieran Marmion, Oran McNulty, Tom Farrell and Tiernan O’Halloran all come into the starting 15.

The backs are completed by captain Jack Carty, centre Tom Day and winger John Porch, while the tight five features hooker Dave Heffernan, tighthead prop Jack Aungier, and lock Oisín Dowling.

There are no changes on either flank meaning Cian Prendergast and Conor Oliver are retained.

Connacht will no doubt be hoping that the home crowd support will give them a boost after a disappointing performance against Edinburgh.

After establishing an 8-0 lead against the Scottish side at the DAM Health Stadium, Edinburgh ultimately had it all their own way, finishing at 56-8.

“It’s been three weeks since our last game so we’ve had a long time to dwell on the Edinburgh performance and understand what happened,” Connacht Head Coach Andy Friend said.

Since then, Connacht have gotten two solid weeks of training in under their belts, Friend added.

“There’s been no talk about the Champions Cup games because tomorrow is a massive fixture in its own right.”

This is the first of three fixtures against Leinster which Connacht have in the next four weeks, as the Champions Cup knock games start in two weeks time.

Andy Friend said, “Our backs are against the wall if we’re to reach the playoffs and with a massive crowd behind us I’m sure all 23 men will put in a performance I know they’re capable of.”

Only a handful of tickets remain available for tomorrow’s game at connachtrugby.ie/tickets, and it is not expected that any will be available at the gates on the day.

Met Eireann forecasts warm and sunny weekend ahead

Our run of good weather this week is set to continue over the weekend, with warm temperatures and clear skies forecast.

Met Eireann is forecasting a beautiful weekend to enjoy before the early summer we’ve been enjoying comes to an end next week.

Today, some light cloud cover will give way to a prolonged stretch of sunshine in the afternoon and early evening.

Highest temperatures of 17 degrees today, with a light westerly breeze freshening things.

Headed into tonight, things will stay warm and calm, with lows of 6 degrees overnight inland, but a more balmy 12 degrees in coastal area.

Saturday will be the brightest part of the weekend, with sunny skies burning off any lingering mist in the early morning.

The sun will shine throughout most of the day, with some scattered light cloud cover in places.

Temperatures will reach highs of 15 to 17 degrees tomorrow, with a light westerly breeze turning moderate in the day, before dying down again.

Sunday will continue the good run of sunshine, with a little more cloud throughout parts of the day, but still very balmy for this time of year.

A light variable breeze will be present during the day, with the mercury reaching highs of 13 to 16 degrees.

Come next week, Met Eireann is currently forecasting a shift in the weather, with cooler conditions and less sunshine, though Monday is also expected to have some late sun in the evening.

The rain is also expected to make an unwelcome return mid-next week according to the forecaster.

UHG is Ireland’s second most overcrowded hospital today

UHG is the second most overcrowded hospital in Ireland today, with 44 patients waiting on trolleys in the emergency department.

At Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe there are seven patients without beds, five in the emergency department, and two in the wards.

Figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show that there are a total of 475 patients in Irish hospitals on trolleys today.

The worst affected hospital is UH Limerick, where there are 51 patients without beds.

Both hospitals are also coping with large numbers of COVID cases, which have begun to surge again in recent days.

There were 63 confirmed cases at UHG as of Thursday evening, with another 29 at Portiuncula Hospital.

Of those, three cases in Ballinasloe and two in Galway are being treated in the intensive care unit.

Portiuncula has just one general and one ICU bed available, while UHG has just no intensive care beds available.

Lapping the Lake at Lough Derg

Take a lap around the lake at Lough Derg in support of the lifesaving RNLI, while taking in some of the region’s breathtaking scenery.

The 130km Lap the Lake fundraising cycle, organised by the Lough Derg RNLI, will take place this May.

The cycle will start and finish at the RNLI Lifeboat Station in Dromineer, and the full circuit of the lake will give the participants the chance to take in some breathtaking scenery.

The route will take them around the outstanding beauty of the lake and River Shannon through counties Tipperary, Clare and Galway.

As part of the safety measures there will be First Aid, out riders, marshals and bike maintenance provided throughout the course.

There will be a comfort stop at Le Bateau, Emerald Star Line in Portumna, where tea, coffee and a lunch pack will be provided for participants.

Lough Derg Yacht Club is providing parking, toilet, and shower facilities for participants.

Niamh McCutcheon, Chairperson of the Lough Derg RNLI Fundraising Branch, said that the cycle is being widely supported.

The committee stress that the cycle is a non-competitive event and, encouraging cycling enthusiasts to register.

Niamh McCutcheon says it “promises to be a fun day covering the very picturesque Lough Derg, an area for which our lifeboat volunteers provide a rescue service 24/7 365 days of the year”.

The €65 entry fee includes a Tee shirt, goody bag, a reusable lifeboat water bottle and many other treats.

A delicious meal costing €10pp and bar facilities will be available at the Yacht Club following the cycle.

The iconic Canning Hurleys in Portumna has announced that it is closing down after 11 years due to supply chain problems.

Run by the Canning family, who include Galway’s legendary hurling stars Oliver and Joe Canning, the business thanked all of their staff and customers, and said that this was an extremely difficult decision to make.

The business said that there has been great difficulty in securing quality ash planks, and having them delivered, due to supply chain issues.

“As you know, quality is at the core of every Canning Hurley we produce,” the closure announcement said.

“We cannot compromise the quality of our products to continue to meet demand with the current ash supply issues potentially due to worsen in the future.”

“We also do not wish to pass on any compromised quality issues to you our customers as we value the positive relationships that we have built with all Canning Hurley customers over the past 11 years.”

Due to the “ongoing and persistent” ash dieback disease affecting their supply, they said that they are no longer able to produce the same great quality hurleys.

They thanked customers for their support through the years, which has brought “great joy” to see their hurleys on pitches at every level.

“It gave our staff and family great joy to see our Canning Hurleys being used from underage blitzes throughout the country right up to Senior All-Irland Hurling Final day in Croke Park.”

“It was our pleasure as a family to produce quality hand-made Hurley’s for the hurling and camogie communities across Ireland and further afield.”

The final day of business for the iconic hurley store will be at the end of the month on Thursday, March 31.

File for DPP on organised crime arrest

Galway Daily news missing teen found safe

A file will go to the DPP in connection with the arrest of a man as part of an investigation into organised crime in the west of Ireland.

The man in his early 40s was arrested on Wednesday morning and detained at Sligo Garda Station.

He has since been released and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

This is the fourth person who has been arrested in connection with the organised crime investigation in the Sligo/Leitrim Division.

Gardaí arrested a man in his mid-30s at Dublin Airport on Tuesday, January 11, and this man was later charged and appeared before the courts.

Two others, a man and a woman, were also arrested on January 18 and February 20 as part of the investigation.

One of these, a man in his 20s, was arrested in Galway before being detained in Sligo.

Both were later released without charge and files are being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Lidl has opened its doors to customers at its brand-new store in Knocknacarra this morning.

The store in the Galway city suburb will create over 30 permanent jobs, and sees a local investment of more than €13 million.

With a 1,546sqm shop floor, high ceilings and wide aisles, the new Lidl also has a large bakery area with freshly baked breads and pastries.

Commenting on the opening, Pauline McLoughlin, store manager at Lidl Knocknacarra, said that the shop offers customers an even better experience with its spacious design, ample parking and sustainability features throughout.

“The new store will be a positive addition to the local area of Knocknacarra making our fantastic range of top-quality produce available at the best possible prices,” she said.

The environmentally friendly Knocknacarra store has roof mounted solar panels and will be powered by 100% green renewable electricity.

Canney welcomes school secretaries voting for offer of improved conditions

Galway East TD Seán Canney has welcomed school secretaries voting in favour of accepting the Department of Education’s offer of improved pay and conditions.

The Department of Education, school management bodies and Fórsa have been engaging on a claim relating to terms and conditions for grant-funded school secretaries.

Deputy Canney explained that under the terms of this new agreement, school secretaries’ pay rates will move to a scale which is aligned with the Clerical Officer Grade III pay scale on a pro-rata basis according to a secretary’s current working pattern.

“These pay increases will be backdated to 1st September 2021 while the terms and conditions also cater for lower-paid but longer serving secretaries to be placed higher up the salary scale,” he said.

A new contract will give the option to secretaries that they no longer need to apply to the Department of Social Protection for payment of benefits for periods when they are not working due to school holidays.

Chronic overcrowding continues at Galway hospitals

Fifty-four people are on trolleys in Galway’s public hospitals today, according to the latest figures by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

University Hospital Galway has 43 patients waiting for a bed and Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe has a further 11 people on trolleys this morning.

Only University Hospital Limerick has worse overcrowding today with 67 patients on trolleys, while Letterkenny University Hospital and Cork University Hospital also have 43 people waiting for a bed.

Speaking yesterday, INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said that there has been no let-up in pressure in hospitals across the country.

“With nearly 1,400 COVID cases in our hospitals as well as the huge levels of overcrowding, it is not acceptable to our members that there has not been direct intervention from government to alleviate this problem,” she said.

“Our members have been sounding the alarm to Government every day about the chronic overcrowding. The situation we now find ourselves in deserves immediate political intervention.

“It is not good enough for members of Government to comment on the situation our members find themselves in, we need to see direct action that will ease the pressure starting with the curtailing of non-emergency elective activity.

“Overcrowding adds stress for staff and worsens patient care. It is high-risk in normal times, but even more so during a pandemic.”
