Supermac’s has the best customer experience of any restaurant chain in Ireland according to the latest report by the CX Company.

The Galway based chain topped the Restaurants Sector table in the CXi Ireland Customer Experience Report 2023.

Supermac’s ranked 32nd overall in the report out of 150 companies in Ireland, rising four places compared with the previous year’s report.

It’s been a bad year for RTÉ, as the multitude of scandals have clearly impacted customers feelings on the broadcaster.

RTÉ ranked squarely at the bottom of the table this year, falling 15 places in the rankings.

This year saw 85% of surveyed companies increase their CX scores, though they still remain lower than in 2015, when the survey began.

The top 10 companies with the best customer experiences in Ireland are, in order of ranking: Irish Credit Union, Allcare Pharmacies, PowerCity, Smyth’s Toystore, Specsavers, Life Pharmacy, Laya Healthcare, Hickey’s Pharmacy, M&S Food, and Dunnes Stores.

Two local ALDI suppliers from Co. Galway were among the big winners at this year’s Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards.

Loughnane’s of Galway and Builín Blasta received top accolades at this year’s awards with a gold medal for Loughnane’s of Galway’s white pudding and silver for their black pudding. Builín Blasta also scooped a gold award for their smoked onion mayo.

The Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards were presented at a ceremony in Dingle, Co. Kerry and saw ALDI suppliers win a total of 43 awards.

Speaking about this year’s Blas na hÉireann wins, John Curtin, Group Buying Director at ALDI, said that they dedicate themselves every day to delivering quality local food to our customers at affordable prices.

“This requires a serious team effort, and we could not do it without the hard work of our incredible Irish suppliers,” he said. That’s why it is so gratifying to see so many of them recognised at this year’s Blas na hÉireann Awards.”

Mr Curtin said that with many of the winning products available year-round in 160 ALDI stores nationwide, customers can ;rest assured that they are availing of the best of the best’ when it comes to Irish food and drink.

University of Galway Students’ Union will hold its Mental Health Week campaign next week from Monday 9 to Friday 13 October.

The week of events will be looking at different aspects of students’ mental health and encouraging them to look for help if and when they need it.

The Share the Load exhibition will take place in Áras na Mac Léinn on Thursday to highlight the issue of mental health and suicide amongst students and to highlight the supports that are available.

The installation comprises a display of 137 backpacks laid out, each representing a life lost to suicide in the college-going age group.

On Monday the Feel Good Fair will have information stands from various groups promoting mental health wellbeing. Free training courses during the week will include safeTALK suicide awareness training and financial resilience training.

Students’ Union President Dean Kenny said that mental health is something that affects every single one of us in one way or another.

“We want to ensure our students know that there is no shame in reaching out, and there are services there to help you when you may be struggling,” he said.

“With our events like the Feel Good Fair and the Share the Load installation we hope to help break the stigma associated with mental health issues, and to encourage people to ask for help.”

Students’ Union Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Izzy Tiernan added: “Through our training events during the week we hope to empower our students to look after their mental health and also be in a position to reach out to help others.

“We will be highlighting the services available on and off campus to help students who are going through a tough time.”

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has announced the creation of 150 new jobs in Galway as they expand operations at their Ballybrit campus.

The new technical roles at its Global Center of Excellence for research and development on their HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform.

Minister for Enterprise Trade & Employment Simon Coveney said, “Galway’s thriving tech hub continues to grow from strength to strength and this expansion will provide excellent employment opportunities for tech talent, from graduates to experienced tech professionals.”

The Minister added that creating these high-skill jobs here is a “fresh vote of confidence” in the talent located in Galway and surrounding areas.

“HPE has a long history with Ireland dating back over 50 years and their continued commitment to Ireland, and the West, is very welcome. I wish all the team the very best in this exciting new phase.”

The new roles are in addition to 150 jobs announced in 2021 in a range of areas including cloud native development, DevSecOps,  AI research, and cyber security, as well as product and program management.

These new jobs will also feature a range of roles, including architects, software engineers, product, engineering and project managers, researchers, user experience engineers, security specialists, test engineers, data analysts and AI professionals.

The team will perform a key role within the newly created Hybrid Cloud business unit, which comes into effect November 1, 2023.

“The new Center of Excellence in Galway will help Hewlett Packard Enterprise realize its vision and shape the future experience of the HPE GreenLake platform,” said Fidelma Russo, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Freudenberg Medical has announced that 100 new jobs are being created at their manufacturing facility in Spiddal, with recruitment already underway.

Chief Executive of the Freudenberg Group, Dr. Mohsen Sohi is officially opening the newly developed manufacturing facility today alongside Minister Simon Coveney.

This facility represents a total investment of over €2 million by Údarás na Gaeltachta. The new facility will increase the medical device company’s manufacturing footprint in Spidéal by 50%.

It will enable them to increase the productivity of the company and the workforce in An Spidéal by 25%.

It is expected that 400 people will be working for Freudenberg Medical in its Galway base within the next eighteen months.

Údarás na Gaeltachta Chief Executive Tomás Ó Síocháin said, “We are proud to be part of this significant development in a vital sector that continues to grow.”

“It is important for us to be able to help excellent client companies such as Freudenberg Medical to develop and grow their facilities, resulting in increased employment and opportunities in the Gaeltacht.”

“High-quality positions are coming on-stream here, in the heart of the Conamara Gaeltacht. We are happy that we were able to provide Freudenberg with the infrastructure that enables the creation of these jobs.”

New positions will be created in engineering, research and development, manufacturing and quality and support services.

The company have stated that recruitment for the newly announced positions at Freudenberg Medical is already underway.

More than 100 new jobs will be created in Galway between the expansion of two major companies working in the city.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment Simon Coveney is visiting Galway today for the announcement of new expansion at TitanHQ and Nostra.

Cybersecurity vendor TitanHQ, which currently employs 135 people at its base in Salthill, is creating 67 new jobs over the course of the next two years.

Founded in Galway in 1999, TitanHQ is Ireland’s largest native cybersecurity company, with a global reach.

Ronan Kavanagh, CEO said, “We are delighted to welcome Minister Coveney to our headquarters today. This comes at a fantastic time as October is International Cyber Awareness Month.”

“The investment in our team is what allows us to continue providing industry leading multi-layered cybersecurity solutions”.

As part of the current expansion, Enterprise Ireland is supporting the recruitment of some of the new positions in the company and is working with the company on a joint R&D project to integrate a number of software solutions to enhance the company’s product offering.

Leo Clancy, CEO of Enterprise Ireland said, “Enterprise Ireland has been working with TitanHQ since 2004 and seen first-hand how this innovative company has gone from strength-to-strength, growing a strong customer base internationally and recruiting people at home.”

In addition to this, IT service provider Nostra is opening a new office in Ballybrit, which will create 35 new jobs in Galway.

The new office will be used to build out a Cyber Security Centre of Excellence as well as grow IT Support, Professional Services and Project Management teams to serve customers in the West of Ireland.

Speaking at the opening, Minister Simon Coveney said, “I am delighted to join the Nostra team at their highly impressive new office here in Galway.”

“Irish businesses like Nostra are the backbone of our economy, creating jobs right across Ireland and today’s announcement is a testament to the talent and hard work of the team.”

Nostra currently employs 250 people across Ireland, UK, Bulgaria and South Africa. The latest expansion is the result of investment from Phoenix Equity Partners.

This is creating 100 new jobs at the company in total, and aims to increase Nostra’s revenue fivefold to €250m within five years.

“Alarming” number of children on trolleys in hospital last month

There were an alarming number of children on trolleys in Irish hospitals in September the INMO has said.

Last month there were 2,523 children under the age of 16 left to be treated on a trolley or chair the INMO’s monthly report states.

The high level of general overcrowding in September has been a “huge red flag” for the coming winter.

University Hospital Galway was the fifth most overcrowded hospital in the country last month, with a total of 516 patients on trolleys over the course of September.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said, “September has always been a reliable indicator of how the winter is going to look for healthcare staff, and the situation that our members are predicting based on these figures as was the case in August, indicates a huge red flag.”

“The number of children on trolleys this September is also really alarming. Knowing what we do about how trolley waits negatively affect patient outcomes, and how rapidly children can decline when they are sick, the risks that children are being exposed to in our hospital are too high.”

She added that a risk assessment would be carried out in any other industry which had reached such a crisis point, but that from their engagements with the HSE they don’t seem to be willing to put the necessary mitigation measures in place.

“Our members are very worried for themselves and the people in their care. Without real action the State is basically just asking staff and patients to lower their expectations for their health service.”

“We need risk reduction measures to be introduced now – not when it is too late and an inevitable adverse incident occurs.”

“The current situation is not sustainable, and the impact on vulnerable people, including children, is not something the government should be prepared to accept.”

Careful Now! – TedFest returns for 2024

TedFest will be back on the Aran Islands once again next year, with tickets now on sale for the annual festival celebrating the iconic show.

From March 7 – 10 next year, Inis Mór will be transformed into the legendary ‘Craggy Island’ once more for a weekend of high-jinx.

Copious cups of tea and sandwiches, a lot of red tank-tops, nuns on the run, priests on the pull, map-cap costumes and of course a bishop getting a kick up the arse – Fr Ted, Ireland’s best loved TV Show is celebrated.

Visitors will enjoy all the ecumenical craic that Craggy Island has to offer and while the official itinerary for TedFest 2024 hasn’t been announced yet, it has been confirmed that highlights will include the annual Lovely Girls Competition, Ted’s Got Talent, the Father Ted Prizeless Quiz, the priests dance off, the nuns in neon old grey whistle rave, the screaching competition in a very dark cave, the Craggy Cup, Blind Date, Best Dressed and lots more. Tickets are now on sale at www.tedfest.org.

Original cast members are also firm favourites at the event and Joe Rooney who played Fr Damo generally pops out to the Island to referee the Craggy Cup while Patrick McDonnell who played Eoin McLove is a most attractive host for Blind Date.

Willie or no willie, Craggy Island’s most beloved singer always draws a crowd – probably about seventeen million!

Competition can also be rife for the coveted Lovely Girls title and organisers have lovely girls practice their lovely talents, lovely laughs, cone walking and general loveliness at all times.

Ted’s Got Talent is also a big highlight with some very memorable moments including Celine Dion emerging from a giant inflatable shark singing My heart will go on… go on, go on, go on, go on …

The Comedy Craic Den and music line-up is always a triumph at TedFest and the charity trad sessions will surely bring out the dancing priests and raise some money for a good cause that won’t just ‘rest in our account’.

The costumes at TedFest also deserve a mention and some highlights in recent years include revelers that came dressed as ‘Father Jacks Underpants Hamper’, Irelands Largest Lingerie Department, The Flight into Terror, Tom’s Scania Truck, the feckin crunchies in the car, the various stages of Henry Sellers and a fantastic mix of Mrs Doyles, Fr Jacks, Teds, Dougals, Pat Mustards and all the favourites.

All activity will take place at the Aran Islands hotel on Inis Mor which has the space to accommodate the Music Stages, the Craggy Craic Den and full extended line-up.

Organisers are encouraging the seventeen million repentant brethren who have never managed to tick TedFest off their bucket list to not miss out again as tickets are going fast and are limited to the amount of accommodation available on the island. TedFest is about as wild and wonderful as it gets!

Worrying decline in dentists accepting medical cards in Galway

There has been a worrying withdrawal of dentists from the medical card scheme in Galway over the past five years Denis Naughten has said.

In the past five years, 40% of dentists have left the scheme in County Galway Deputy Naughten said, leaving just 28 practices still accepting medical cards.

“However, all of these dental practices are now full and cannot offer services to additional patients.”

“While the HSE has provided emergency treatment through local health centres this is only available for children and at present no adult service is available.”

There are 1.5 million adults around the country eligible for medical cards, and less than 600 dentists operating in the scheme.

This has left many patients unable to get dental treatment, Denis Naughten said.

Denis Naughten, as part of the Regional Group, brought a motion before the Dáil earlier this year urging the Government to take immediate action to address this situation.

“Under section 67 of the Health Act 1970, the HSE is obliged to provide dental treatment and dental appliances to persons under the medical card scheme. It is obliged under law to provide this service but has instead turned its back on those struggling to cope.”

Underpayment has led to an exodus of dentists from the medical card scheme, leading to unacceptable delays. People simply cannot get appointments. The whole system right across the board is collapsing.”

A review of the contract with dentists nationwide is needed, he added, along with investment to address staff shortages in the dental sector.

Criticism has been levied at the slow pace of delivery for new X-Ray facilities for Tuam Primary Care Centre.

Galway TD Seán Canney said that work has begun on site, but that the facility won’t be operational until the middle of next year.

“In March 2023 I received written confirmation that work on the X-ray Facility in the Primary Care Centre Tuam would commence in mid-2023 and would be complete by end of 2023.”

“On the 22nd of September I received another written response confirming the works have commenced but are not expected to be complete until mid-2024.”

Deputy Canney added that it is “unbelievable” that it has taken seven years to deliver the facility since funding was first secured in 2017.

“I am delighted to hear that the works have commenced on site and when complete the service will be available to GPs in the surrounding Primary Care Team areas to refer patients for X-rays. It will be a universal service available to all patients.”

“Currently the Ultrasound service is available and is delivered by three Clinical Specialist Ultra Sonographers, a Radiology Assistant together with administration support.”

The HSE has also recruited a Clinical Specialist Radiographer for the operation of the X-Ray services.

“The Diagnostic Service is being developed in conjunction with Portiuncla University Hospital Ballinasloe and will be a major additional health service which will be delivered locally,” Seán Canney said.

University of Galway’s open days to feature interactive, hands-on experiences

The University of Galway is holding two open days next week for prospective students and their families to get an advance look at its facilities, courses, and a taste of college life.

A perfect opportunity for students to start preparing for CAO 2024, the autumn undergraduate open days take place next Friday and Saturday, October 6 – 7, from 9am to 3pm.

The University offers over 60 internationally recognised undergraduate degrees courses in areas such as Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences, Arts, Science, Engineering, Business, Law and Hotel Management.

More than 90% of courses offer students a work placement and/or an opportunity to study abroad, helping them to expand their horizons and get prepared for the workplace after college.

The two-day event is spread across five exhibitions and the schedule includes the largest ever programme of talks with over 100 course, subject, career and student support talks on offer.

A special feature of this open day will be exclusive access to some of the University’s most innovative teaching and learning facilities and hands-on experiences.

Future medical students will get to see the state of the art healthcare simulation facilities, while those interested in law can attend the Moot Court, which replicates the experience of a real court hearing.

Visitors are invited to join a Drama Masterclass, a practical drama workshop, and Music students can experience the same.

The College of Science and Engineering are offering interactive zones for future students to explore multiple pathways and courses.

Sarah Geraghty, Director of Student Recruitment and Outreach, highlighted the importance of providing students with opportunities to explore the campus and think about their future studies.

Planning permission has been granted for an assisted living residential development for elderly people in Galway City.

Sweetbay Ltd has been given the green light byt the city council for a four storey over undercroft assisted living apartment building at Tornóg on the Headford Road.

The apartment building would have a total of 45 units, comprising 13 one-bed apartments, and 32 two-bed apartments.

Galway City Council granted planning permission for the residential development with 19 conditions attached.

The developer must pay the city council a contribution of €357,138 towards the provision of public services in the area which will facilitate the development.

“The proposed accommodation aims to provide and extend the period of independent living, and should not be considered similar to a nursing home typology,” a design statement for the application states.

“This is achieved through the provision of specifically design residential units, communal accommodation which is intended to generate a strong community and a programme of adjunct support facilities”.

The development also includes 23 car parking spaces, including age friendly and disability spaces, along with a set-down/drop-off point for minibuses or ambulances.

Communal open space will be provided through a central courtyard and a south facing terrace.

Sweetbay Ltd recently received planning permission for another residential development at Tornog adjacent to this site.

This will comprise 30 apartments spread across four blocks, along with six three-bed houses and a creche.

Parking in the housing development will comprise 56 car parking spaces, and 112 bicycle spaces.

University Hospital Galway is highlighting the supports available for new mothers through National Breastfeeding Week.

National Breastfeeding Week is marked each year from October 1 – 7, it is an opportunity to discuss the importance of breastfeeding as the normal and healthy way to feed babies and young children.

Breastfeeding gives babies the best start for a healthy life and it protects both mother and baby, the health benefits are undisputed. It is also crucial that women are empowered, enabled and supported on their breastfeeding journey.

“This year’s theme, ‘Making our communities and workplaces more breastfeeding friendly’ aims at highlighting the local supports available to parents.

Many breastfeeding mothers need ongoing support to continue breastfeeding and it’s important that they know they are not alone and that expert help is available to them every step of the way on their breastfeeding journey.

“Breastfeeding is a learned skill acquired through education, observation and experience. While it is the most natural way to feed babies it’s also a skill that mum and baby learn during the early days and weeks,” explains Claire Cellarius, specialist midwife at UHG.

During National Breastfeeding Week the Maternity Department at UHG will have information stands available throughout the unit for women to access information about breastfeeding and gift bags will be presented to all mums who deliver during National Breastfeeding Week.

Education and awareness sessions for transition year students will take place on Tuesday, October 3 and Friday, October 6 about the importance of breastfeeding.

These are a collaboration between University Hospital Galway, Health Promotion and Community Nutrition and Dietetic Services, and Community Healthcare West.

Regular supports available at University Hospital Galway include Antenatal Breastfeeding Education both in the hospital, and via outreach clinics.

Live webinars with midwives and a consultant neonatologist also take place once a month, which you can register for, or find out more about at www.uhgmaternity.com.

Weekly virtual support clinics for mothers with a Lactation Specialist Midwife are also available. Times and details of which are available at www.mychild.ie.

The hospital also offers the ‘Well Breastfeeding Clinic’, the first of its kind in Ireland, which helps mothers who are having difficulty feeding their child early on.

“The clinic identifies a wide range of breastfeeding issues and all referrals to the clinic are through the postnatal ward at UHG or your local Public Health Nurse,” Claire Cellarius said.

The hospital recently recruited two additional Lactation Consultants to help expand breastfeeding support services, and added an additional clinic to the Well Breastfeeding service due to popular demand.
