Independent Ireland has announced that Roscommon-Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice has joined the party.

The new political party, which was formed in November 2023, aims to fill an underserved space on the political spectrum.

Party leader Michael Collins TD said that they were delighted that Michael Fitzmaurice is willing to take the leap of faith and commit to building the new party.

“We know how hard the road ahead is but none of the three of us are afraid of hard graft and we are confident anyone who joins our party, as a rank and file member, a candidate or a sitting politician will embody that spirit of hard work, determination and common sense,” he said.

Speaking after joining the party, Deputy Fitzmaurice said that the things that unite us as a nation are “far greater than the things that divide us”.

“Real progress can only be achieved through constructive and respectful dialogue, not division,” he said.
