Galway Bay Sailing Club, just a few kilometres outside the city, has a proud tradition of hosting regattas on Galway Bay and training people on a wide variety of boats.

In September the club hosted the prestigious Hansa Nationals and Presidents Cup for the third consecutive year.

But this isn’t just a club for experienced sailors as there are also plenty of training courses on offer for young people to get their first experiencing with boats.

The Department of Heritage, Culture and the Gaeltacht expressed concern about the potential impact of the development on habitats around Galway Bay.

The department noted that the Sailing Club is within Galway Bay Complex and Inner Galway Bay conservation areas, with 20 bird habitats in the area.

They asked that the council be satisfied the project will not have any negative impact on those before granting permission.

Galway County Council gave permission for the alterations to Galway Bay Sailing Club with six conditions attached.
