There are just 5 days left to register before the annual Darkness into Light walk/run takes place.
From 400 people at the first Darkness into Light in 2009 to 180,000 people last year Darkness into Light (DIL) has become a movement in more ways than one across Ireland and all over the world.
DIL is Pieta House’s flagship annual fundraising and awareness event. It began with approximately 400 people in the now iconic yellow DIL T-shirts walking the 5km course in Dublin’s Phoenix Park in 2009.
Pieta House was founded in Lucan, Co Dublin in 2006 and now has services right across Ireland. Pieta offers free counselling to those suffering from suicidal ideation, those who have been bereaved by suicide and people who are engaging in self-harm. Staff are fully qualified and provide a professional one-to-one therapeutic service. For more information visit the Pieta House website.
This year there will be roughly 180 DIL venues across Ireland and worldwide. Last year 180,000 people shared the light helping to promote suicide prevention and to tackle the stigma the leads people to the doors of Pieta House Centres.
DIL will happen across 17 different venues in Galway.
- An Cheathrú Rua
- Galway City
- Inis Meáin
- Inis Mór
- Inis Oírr
This is the first time Headford GAA club have been involved Pieta’s House’s Darkness into Light and it is hoped that every player, volunteer and spectator involved in the club will join together in doing the walk.
Darkness into Light 2018 provides the opportunity for everyone to come together in the support of one another as the stigma of mental health is being tackled.
There are just five days left to register if you would like to join any of the Galway venues as they walk into the light on Saturday next, the 12th of May. Just go to dil.pieta.ie to register.
