The number of people hospitalised with COVID-19 at University Hospital Galway has begun to fall again after peaking during the week.

There were 35 confirmed cases at UHG as of Friday evening, down from more than 40 earlier in the week.

University Hospital Galway saw a spike in cases this week while dealing with outbreaks in the wards.

At Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe the overall number of COVID patients has remained the same at 11 confirmed cases.

Six of the patients at University Hospital Galway are in the ICU, one more than in the previous day’s figures, as are two patients at Portiuncula.

Nationwide there are 428 people hospitalised with COVID-19 in Ireland, of whom 90 have been admitted to intensive care units.
