A post mortem examination will take place on body of a man recovered from the water in Galway city today.

The man was spotted going into the water near the Spanish Arch at around 11am this morning and a member of the public raised the alert.

The Galway Lifeboat was launched at 11:05 and came to the area along with the Coast Guard Rescue helicopter.

The man was recovered from the water after roughly 20 minutes and brought to University Hospital Galway.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital and a postmortem examination will now take place.

Gardaí have asked anyone with information on this “tragic incident” to contact Galway garda station at 091 538 000.
