Weather Warning: Thunderstorms, hail, and downpours to cap off heatwave

A week of piping hot sun will be capped off with rain and a risk of thunderstorms in Galway as the heatwave comes to an end.

Met Eireann has issued a status yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain on Friday afternoon and evening.

Met Eireann is forecasting lightning, hail, and heavy downpours that will bring a risk of localised flooding and hazardous driving conditions.

The alert covers all of Ireland, and will be valid until 8pm on Friday evening.

But the counties considered at most risk are Galway, Wicklow, Kildare, Laois, Offaly, Tipperary, Clare, Mayo and Roscommon.

Temperatures in Galway topped 30 degrees on Wednesday as summer finally came along with a blistering vengeance.

A high temperatures warning issued by Met Eireann for the heatwave remains in force until 9am on Saturday morning.
