Twelve Spanish travel agents are exploring Galway and Ireland this week as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.

The group’s action-packed itinerary includes a visit to Kylemore Abbey, a Galway food walking tour and an overnight stay in the Connacht Hotel.

The travel agents work with Special Tours, one of the largest traditional tour operators in Spain.

The aim of the visit is to familiarise the travel professionals with Ireland, so that when they return home, they will be better informed and more enthusiastic when advising their clients about planning and booking holidays here.

Susan Bolger, Tourism Ireland’s manager for the Spanish market, said they are delighted to invite this group of Spanish travel agents to explore Galway and Ireland this week.

“There really is no substitute for being able to come here and experience what Ireland has to offer at first-hand,” she said.

“Our aim is that when they return home, the travel agents will be even more enthusiastic about the destination, helping to secure a greater share of their business for Ireland in 2023 and beyond.

“Spain is an important market for tourism to Ireland and fact-finding visits like this are a key element of the work that Tourism Ireland undertakes with the important travel trade in Spain.”

Spain is the fifth-largest market for overseas tourism to the island of Ireland. In 2019, Ireland welcomed 431,000 Spanish visitors.

Revenue generated by Spanish visitors that year was €218 million.

New Tesco opens at Siopa an Phobail in Inverin

A new Tesco has opened its doors at Siopa an Phobail in the Gaeltacht village of Indreabhán today.

Store manager, Majella Conneely, a native of Indreabhán, welcomed the first customers into the store which will bring employment to the local community.

The Tesco/ Siopa an Phobail will offer customers several local Galway producers including An Garraí Glás, All about Kombucha and West Ireland Art.

It will employ local colleagues, the majority of whom are native Irish speakers and will operate as gaeilge.

Geoff Byrne, Chief Operating Officer, Tesco Ireland, said he is delighted to be in Indreabhán today to see the doors open on our latest store.

“It is a significant day for us as it will be our first store that we will operate through Irish and English,” he said.

“We welcome Siopa an Phobail to our store network and look forward to playing a big part in the local Indreabhán community for years to come.”

An Bord Pleanála has refused planning permission for a residential development of 50 houses in Loughrea.

Jardonelle Ltd sought approval for a housing estate on a 2.85ha site at Baunoge, Loughrea, east of the town centre.

The estate would have been comprised of 44 four-bedroom, semi-detached units, and 6 four-bedroom detached houses.

In December of last year, the county council refused planning permission for the development, citing concerns about its design and layout, a lack of open space, and road safety issues.

Jardonelle appealed this decision to An Bord Pleanála, which upheld the county council’s decision, citing much the same reasons.

This is the second time that Jardonelle Ltd have been refused planning permission for a residential development at this site.

In 2020, An Bord Pleanála overturned a decision by the county council to grant planning permission for 64 houses at Baunoge, after it was appealed on road safety concerns.

Galway City Council is urging people to avail of free recycling of electric equipment at retailers around the city.

Large electrical retailers in Galway City are required to accept household electrical equipment free of charge from members of the public as part of the ‘We’ll take it back’ campaign from WEEE (Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment) Ireland.

Tiarnan McCusker, Environmental Awareness Officer said, “Firstly, we need to refocus on reuse and repair as these are the most environmentally friendly options.”

“If the appliance has reached its end of life, then you have large electrical Retail shops right across Galway City which will take the appliances for free.”

“All electrical retailers are also required to take back household WEEE on a like for like basis when you purchase a new appliance.”

“In addition to that, Galway City Council are also required to take back household WEEE free of charge from members of the public at our Liosbaun Civic amenity site.’’

Night time water restrictions imposed on Inis Oírr more than six months ago have been lifted by Irish Water.

Water restrictions have been in effect on the Island nightly between 11pm and 7am and were introduced in order to conserve the low water resources on the Island.

These restrictions were imposed back on April 6, and have now been lifted with immediate effect.

Eoin Hughes of Irish Water said, “The restrictions were necessary over the summer months to ensure a continuous daily water supply was available for residents and businesses for hygiene and other essential purposes.”

“Supplies were increased by a significant amount of tankering of water by sea from Rossaveel over the past number of months.”

“Thankfully water reserves on the island have recovered and are currently sufficient to ensure a continuous water supply into the autumn.”

“Irish Water and Galway County Council will continue to monitor and maintain the supply for our customers on Inis Oírr.”

“We would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors to the Island for their conservation efforts during the restrictions.”

Gardaí made a public appeal for help in locating 14 year old Mia O’Neill, who had been missing from the Salthill area since Wednesday.

Renewed appeal for witnesses to crash that killed woman in her 70s

Gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses to a fatal crash that saw a woman in her 70s killed in the west of Ireland earlier this month.

The fatal road traffic collision involving a bicycle and a car happened on the N4 at the Collooney roundabout in Sligo on the morning of Sunday, October 2.

The cyclist, a woman aged in her 70s, was later taken to Sligo University Hospital where she received treatment for serious injuries. The woman has since passed away.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses of this incident or road users who may have video footage, to make this available to them.

In particular, any road users in the area between 11.40am – 12pm on Sunday, 2nd October, 2022.

Brain Tumour Ireland (BTI) is calling on people in Galway to wear their favourite hat on #WearAHatDay on Friday, 4 November and donate €4 to support the charity’s vital work for brain tumour patients and their families.

Over 400 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour in Ireland each year with many contacting Ireland’s only dedicated brain tumour charity for support.

As well as online support groups for patients and families in Galway and across Ireland and practical information for patients, BTI raises awareness of brain tumour symptoms among the public and medical professionals, and contributes funding to brain tumour research.

This year, Brain Tumour Ireland has partnered with milliner Sinead Gormley, who will donate a bespoke hat as a prize for the ‘Best Selfie’ posted with the hashtag, ‘#WearAHatDay’.

The cause is close to Sinead’s heart as her own father died from a brain tumour 18 years ago when she was 26.

Fiona Keegan, the charity’s national coordinator, said they are so thankful to everyone who makes the effort to support the work of Brain Tumour Ireland by making a donation on Wear A Hat Day.

She reminded people that their brilliant milliner for the year, Sinead, will be judging the best selfie.

Fiona said that at the heart of BTI’s work is the support they provide for patients and families in Galway and throughout Ireland with over 200 people availing of their services since January 2021.

Irish Water carrying out works to improve water quality in Galway city

Irish Water is replacing over 325 meters of ageing backyard service connections along Munster Avenue in Galway city this week.

The works are being carried out to improve water quality and reduce the amount of water lost to leakage.

They were described as a ‘critical step in conserving a precious resource’ and reducing high levels of leakage which have caused outages for customers.

Irish Water thanked all customers in Munster Avenue who have engaged with them and assisted in the provision of the backyard services programme.

Speaking about the benefits of the project, Gerry O’Donnell, Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water, said that old backyard service connections continue to impact communities right across Ireland, causing low pressure and supply disruption.

“Replacing these old water mains and service connections in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground,” he said.

“We would like to thank the local residents in Munster Avenue for facilitating these works and working with us to provide a more secure and reliable water supply for generations to come.”

Raw sewage flowing into four Galway areas every day

Raw sewage was being discharged into the rivers and sea every day during the summer in four Galway areas, a new EPA report has found.

An Spidéal, Roundstone, Ahascragh and Carraroe were among 32 towns and villages across the State that still had raw sewage flowing into the environment.

The EPA report released today found that it will take a multi-billion euro investment and at least two decades to get all treatment systems up to standard.

The issues in Carraroe are not expected to be resolved by Irish Water until 2027, while in the other three Galway areas, new treatment plants will be functional by 2024.

The EPA said that it is important that Irish Water allocates sufficient funding and resources in its next investment plan to complete all outstanding work needed to resolve the environmental concerns in these areas.

€100,000 fund announced for Women’s Sheds

A new fund of €100,000 has been announced by Minister Heather Humphreys to support Women’s Sheds across the country.

The initiative, the first of its kind, recognises the growing number of Women’s Sheds across the country, which do not currently operate under a single national representative body like Men’s Sheds.

Minister Humphreys this week met a delegation of women from across the country who are actively involved in running Women and Sister Shed’s in their communities.

The grants which will be in the region of €1,000 to €2,000 could be used to assist Women’s Sheds to expand within their communities, to run activities or to help them with their running costs such as insurance or rental costs.

Announcing the new initiative, Minister Humphreys said many people will be familiar with the Men’s Sheds, of which there are now 400 nationwide and a national body.

She said that the Women’s Shed movement is a relatively new phenomenon in comparison and that many of the groups she spoke to this week have only been in existence for a year or less.

“I passionately want to support our Women’s Sheds to grow however I’m conscious that without a representative body, it is more difficult for Women’s Sheds to avail of State support,” said Minister Humphreys.

“And so, for the first time, I’m putting aside a special fund of €100,000 specifically for our Women’s Sheds.

“My message today is clear – if you are part of a Women’s Shed, please get in touch with my Department because I want to support the fantastic work that you do.”

Nearly one in six third level students have ‘seriously considered’ withdrawing from their courses due to financial or employment reasons, the latest National Survey For Students has found.

Almost 10% of students surveyed said they have considered leaving for financial reasons, while a further 5.3% said that they have thought about it because of employment.

Overall, just 63.4% of students said they have not ‘seriously considered’ abandoning their courses.

Over 13% of those who said that they have considered it said that it related to personal or family reasons.

Postgraduate representative of University of Galway’s governing authority Criodán Ó Murchú said that the statistics show us the unfortunate reality that students are feeling the brunt of the cost of living crisis.

He said that almost 10% of students seriously considering withdrawing due to financial concerns shows that the situation is not sustainable for much longer.

“This will further add to the current plight of mental health issues affecting students in University of Galway, of which there are huge numbers.”

Mr Ó Murchú said students are no longer working at weekends for pocket money, and that they are working multiple days, before and after their lectures, just to scrape by.

“On top of that you have highly skilled PhD workers being paid far less than a living wage for their work. This could be counteracted using surplus budgetary funds to pay its workers fairly,” he said.

On potential solutions to the issue Mr Ó Murchú suggested rent freezes, increasing SUSI thresholds, breakfast provided by the university and abolishing fees.

“Nothing should be off the cards with how desperate the situation is. We need the government to recognise the value students inject into society and their communities. Otherwise, emigration will move from idea to reality.”

Ballynahinch Castle Hotel was among ten Irish tourism companies to attend a top French luxury travel event on a riverboat in central Paris.

The networking event organised by Tourism Ireland was also attended by 34 French luxury travel buyers who met and did business with the Irish companies.

The event involved a workshop of one-to-one meetings, a presentation, as well as networking – providing an excellent opportunity for the tourism companies from Ireland to promote their luxury products and services.

Guests also enjoyed the best of food from Ireland, as well as performances by the Nova Quartet and Winnie Ama.

Monica MacLaverty, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Southern Europe, said: “Our networking event was an excellent opportunity to highlight our luxury tourism offering – from our boutique hotels, castles, luxury resorts and spas, to our rich culture and heritage, and not forgetting our world-class golf.

“Events like this provide a valuable opportunity for Tourism Ireland and our partners to meet, and network with, influential luxury travel buyers, helping to secure a greater share of their business for the island of Ireland in 2023 and beyond.”
