Farrell to bring forward new public ethics legislation

Mairéad Farrell TD will bring forward legislation to reform the public ethics framework in the wake of what her party is calling recent concerns around standards in public office.

The Galway West TD said that the entire ethics framework needs to be ‘rebuilt from the ground up’ but said her bill would allow it to better function while that process takes place.

She said simply allowing the ongoing situation to persist while the government tells us that they are ‘working on it’ is tantamount to saying there will be no accountability in the lifetime of this government.

“In recent months, we have had two ministerial resignations for, among other things, a failure to disclose relevant interests,” the Sinn Féin TD said.

“We have had many having to correct the statements of their interests due to a failure to disclose all the required information.

“We have even had complaints referred to SIPO, who are also currently investigating the minister in charge of public ethics and standards.”

Farrell said that it is a bizarre situation where we have an ethics watchdog who cannot initiate its own investigations despite them having requested this power for years.

“There is no penalty for those who fail to disclose their interests, and in recent months we have seen certain ministers seemingly forgetting that they had more properties than you could count on both hands.

“Lastly, the fact that Oireachtas members are not required to disclose their liabilities above a certain threshold, excluding the private home, is a major weakness that has long been identified.”

The Bill, she said, would allow SIPO to initiate investigations on its own, broaden the list of declarable interests, and ‘make it a sanctionable offence’ for someone found to have wilfully and recklessly failed to make the required disclosures.

galway daily news ciaran cannon sprints apology

Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon has apologised to Dublin band Sprints after he said that he’d heard better music from “slightly embarrassed TY students”.

His comments came after the garage rock band’s performance on the Tommy Tiernan Show on Saturday night  which was otherwise well-received by viewers.

In an apology, Cannon wished Sprints ‘every success’ in their career, adding that he is ‘never going to enjoy their music.’

“My sincere apologies to them for my unkind comment, now removed,” he wrote.

“I’m never going to enjoy their music, something that won’t cause them any concern whatsoever. It was unfair of me to undermine young people doing their thing.”

More must be done to tackle dereliction in Galway says O’Hara

galway daily news louis o'hara sinn féín

More needs to be done to tackle dereliction in Galway as only three properties are listed on the county’s Derelict Sites Register, Sinn Féin’s Louis O’Hara has said.

He welcomed the recent addition of the former Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna to the register but said that local authorities such as Galway County Council must be adequately resourced so that they can identify more properties and collect all levies owed to them.

“Galway County Council have confirmed to me that the former Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna has been added to the derelict sites register for this year,” said O’Hara.

“After so many years lying idle this is welcome news and the owners will now be liable for the Derelict Sites Levy, which is 7% of the market value of the property for each year it remains on the register.”

The Galway East rep for Sinn Féin said that despite this, there are still only 3 properties listed on Galway County Council’s Derelict Sites Register, including the former Shannon Oaks.

“Anyone who lives in Galway knows that this does not reflect the reality on the ground and more must be done to identify properties and penalise owners who fail to maintain them.

“In addition, Galway County Council haven’t been collecting all levies that are owed to them, with the most recent figures for 2021 showing that no levies were collected in the county that year.”

O’Hara said this is deeply concerning when we know that dereliction is a blight on our communities.

He called for the Derelict Sites Levy to be used as a tool by local authorities to raise revenue that can then be utilised to tackle dereliction.

“We have millions of Euro in potential untapped revenue that could transform communities and bring vacant and derelict homes and buildings back into use.”

Floating casinos, what is it?

0
roulette

Any casino is, first of all, the impressions of the game, the feeling of excitement, and the joy of winning at high stakes. Most casino players appreciate the opportunity to get a new experience. Of course, the owners themselves know about it. Someone creates crypto casino UK, others build special ones on the water or offer cruise ship guests the to try their luck at slots. What is it – a floating casino and what is its peculiarity?

A casino on the water refers to a gambling establishment that is located on a boat, ship, or other floating structure. These casinos offer a unique gambling experience and can be found on cruise ships, riverboats, and even houseboats. They can vary in size and luxury, from small, intimate gambling halls to large, elaborate casinos with multiple levels and a wide range of games.

Different types of casinos on the water

  • The most popular casinos on the water include those found on cruise ships, such as Royal Caribbean’s Casino Royale and Carnival’s Casinos at Sea.
  • Riverboat casinos, such as the Isle of Capri in Missouri and the River City Casino in Louisiana, are also popular.
  • Some floating casinos can also be found in exotic locations like Goa, India and Japan.

Building a casino on water requires a lot of planning and financial investments. The structure must be designed to withstand the movement of water and must also comply with maritime laws and regulations.

At the same time, the creation of a casino on the water has its own special meaning. For cruise liners, this is since a ship sailing on the water is subject to the laws of the country in which it was registered, so the owners of a gambling establishment avoid high tax rates. However, while the cruise ship is in port, the casinos must be closed. The range of games offered in them may vary depending on the liner’s route. The age limit is also different. For Europe and Australia, it is 18 years, for the United States, it is 21 years, and for Japan, it is 20.

Main reasons to build a casino on the water

Building a casino on the water can be a way to attract a different type of clientele. For example, cruise ships offer a vacation experience that includes gambling, while riverboat casinos can be popular tourist attractions in certain areas.

Another reason to build a casino on the water is that it can provide a unique and exciting gambling experience. Being on the water adds a new dimension to the gambling experience, and it can also offer spectacular views and a sense of luxury.

One of the main differences between land-based casinos and casinos on the water is that the latter are typically smaller and more limited in terms of the games offered.

Land-based casinos are more permanent, while casinos on the water are mobile and can change locations.

The atmosphere of land-based casinos and casinos on the water can also be different, with the latter often offering a more relaxed, vacation-like atmosphere.

Casinos on the water offer a unique gambling experience that combines the thrill of gambling with the luxury and excitement of being on the water. They can be found on cruise ships, riverboats, and even houseboats and are a popular tourist attraction. While smaller and more limited than land-based casinos, they provide a different type of atmosphere and a unique gambling experience.

Ireland’s first Robotic Guided Coronary Intervention carried out at UHG

0
GALWAY DAILY NEWS heath Robotic Guided Coronary Intervention

A new robotic technology used in stent procedures has been carried out at University Hospital Galway the first of its kind in Ireland.

The Robotic Guided Coronary Intervention combines the benefits of coronary intervention with the precision of robotics.

It allows cardiologists to move the stent one millimetre at a time.

It also gives the medical team an enhanced, close up view of the angiographic images and information during the entire procedure.

The new technology allows Interventional Cardiologists to use the robot as an extension of their own hand, allowing for robotic precision and details visualization when positioning of guide catheters, guidewires and balloon/stent catheters.

Prof Faisal Sharif, Consultant Cardiologist, who carried out the first procedure in UHG, welcomed the addition of the CorPath Robotic Angioplasy as a game-changer.

“Robotic innovation has come a long way in the last decade. And we in Galway are delighted to have performed the first Robotic Guided Coronary Intervention in Ireland and the UK,” he said.

“The main advantage of robotics is that it is safe and very precise in stent placement. It allows the accurate placement for up to 1 mm at a time.”

The use of robotics in the procedure will also benefit staff, reducing their exposure to radiation.

“Traditionally, the coronary stent placement procedure is performed in the Cardiac Cath Lab resulting in staff exposure to radiation. The second main advantage of using Robotics is the reduction in radiation exposure for the staff,” added Prof Sharif.

“We recently successfully completed the first case and going forward we will be performing these procedures regularly.

“I would like to thank Science Foundation Ireland, University of Galway and University Hospital Galway for their support towards this innovation.”

Appeal lodged against controversial Tuam gaming arcade plans

Galway Daily news Council approves controversial Tuam gaming arcade

Plans for a gaming and amusement arcade in Tuam, which met heavy local opposition, have been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Galway County Council granted planning permission to Coalquay Leisure Limited to covert a former bookstore on Vicar Street in Tuam.

There were strong objections from local residents and businesses to the plans, with concerns expressed about the late opening hours in an area with many homes.

Other concerns were related to the potential for anti-social behaviour, and that it would offer no ecomic or community benefits to the town.

Floor plans for the application show 51 gaming machines on the ground floor of the premises.

They also include two tables for poker or other card games which will be located near the main entrance.

One objection was a letter signed by 29 people, including Galway East TD Sean Canney.

Two third party appeals against the decision have been lodged with An Bord Pleanála, which is due to make a decision by May 15 of this year.

Have Any of the Ken Bruen Adaptations Done the Author’s Work Justice?

0

Ken Bruen is one of the most successful authors to come from Galway, and the 72-year-old is best known for his crime fiction and gangster books. The fast-paced style of his writing makes the novels hard to put down, and the strong Irish themes have global appeal.

It’s hardly a surprise that Bruen’s work has attracted a lot of interest from television and film producers. There have been numerous adaptations of his books already, but it could be argued that none have done justice to the originals upon which they are based.

Huge Market for Themes from Bruen’s Books

The concepts from Bruen’s books are hugely popular throughout the entertainment industry, and developers are always looking for offerings in the crime and gangster genre that they can adapt. No matter where you look, there are numerous options for fans of these themes, some of which are all-time classics.

For example, legendary offerings from Martin Scorsese such as Goodfellas and The Departed have helped to keep the crime genre front and centre in the mainstream. These titles have inspired various games over the years as well, such as Gang Wars on mobile. There are also numerous new online casino games that pay homage to iconic gangster films, including Chicago Gangsters and Cat Gangster. There’s the Goodfeathers slot as well, a bird-themed game directly inspired by Scorsese’s 1990 flick.

Bruen’s ideas have many of the key tropes you’d associate with classic crime and gangster films, but they also have relatable characters and settings. That’s why they’re ideal for television and film versions.

Jack Taylor Series Faced a Lot of Criticism

Bruen’s main body of work is the Jack Taylor series, and it’s these books that helped the Galway man achieve fame around the world. The first offering was The Guards in 2001, and this went on to win numerous accolades including the 2004 Shamus Award for Best Novel. This was followed up by numerous other lauded novels including The Killing of the Tinkers in 2002 and Priest in 2006.

There was a lot of excitement when it was announced that there would be a televised Jack Taylor series with Iain Glen in the title role. There are nine episodes of this in total, each based on a different novel from Bruen’s catalogue. The series didn’t quite live up to the hype, though, with many people criticising the casting choice of Scottish actor Glen. His Irish accent was unconvincing, and it spoiled what could have been a great show.

Two Films Met with Mixed Reception

Bruen has had two books adapted for the silver screen to date, and these have been huge releases featuring well-known actors. The first was London Boulevard in 2010, but this was met with a poor critical response and has a low rating of 38 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The other movie based on Bruen’s work was Blitz. Jason Statham starred in the lead role in the 2011 title from Elliott Lester, and this one was met with slightly better reception. The Snatch actor was praised for his performance in a film that one critic referred to as a “guilty pleasure.”

Most fans of Bruen would say that the best way to enjoy his work is to read the novels, as the film and television offerings haven’t quite been up to scratch yet. Still, there are plenty of other books that could be adapted, so there’s a chance that there will be a hit based on Bruen’s work in the future.

Lifeboat rescues three aboard boat adrift in the dark

Three people on a boat adrift in the dark were rescued by the Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat near Portumna this week.

On Thursday evening, the RNLI were called out to assist three people on a 16ft speed boat adrift at the most northern part of the lake near Portumna.

It was reported that the three people had been wake boarding when their vessel had suffered engine failure.

The lifeboat Jean Spier launched shortly after 6pm with calm conditions, but below freezing temperatures in the dark.

Valentia Coast Guard gave the crew coordinates for the stricken boat, and they asked the people aboard to use their phone torches when they saw the lifeboat coming.

They made contact around 6:30pm, having found the boat drifting south of its reported position.

Lifeboat crew provided the casualties with blankets and told them to wrap up and sit in a huddle at the bow of their boat while they set up a tow.

At 7pm the casualty vessel was safely tied alongside at Terryglass Harbour. Having ensured the casualties were safe and ashore, the lifeboat departed the scene and was back at Station at 8:15pm.

Jeremy Freeman, Deputy Launching Authority at Lough Derg RNLI advises boat users, “to dress appropriately for winter weather and water temperatures.”

“Make sure your engines are serviced and always carry sufficient life jackets for everyone on board and ensure that they are worn”.

Connacht have announced the squad lineup for this weekend’s trip to Newcastle, with six changes from last week’s side.

Denis Buckley, Shane Delahunt, Leva Fifita, Shamus Hurley-Langton, Conor Fitzgerald and the fit-again Adam Byrne have all been named to the starting XV.

Commenting on the team selection, Andy Friend said that they would have to match the physicality that Newcastle brought to the Sportsground last month.

Fresh off his Ireland inclusion in the Six Nations, Finlay Bealham forms the front row with Buckley and Delahunt, while Josh Murphy keeps his place in the second row.

The back row is completed by captain Jarrad Butler at number 8, and openside flanker Conor Oliver.

Colm Reilly is retained at scrum-half, while the Cathal Forde-Byron Ralston combo at centre continues after impressive performances last weekend.

Byrne is named on the right wing, with Alex Wootton on the left and Mack Hansen again named at full-back.

If Connacht secure a bonus point win in this game, it could mean the potential for home games as they progress further into the knockout stages.

“It’s been a good Challenge Cup campaign for us so far, but tomorrow’s game is very important in mapping out our potential route in the knockout stages,” Andy Friend said.

“We want to play as many games as possible at our home so we travel to England knowing every point matters.”

Work begins this week on replacing over a kilometre of Salthill water mains

0
Galway Daily news Upgrade works underway on Inverin water mains network

Work is due to get underway this week on replacing more than a kilometre of water mains pipes in the Salthill area of Galway City.

Uisce Eireann is replacing almost 1.3km of aged water mains with new modern pipes at Grattan Park, Salthill.

The project is to ensure a more reliable water supply for the area, and cut down on the amount lost to leakages.

Gerry O’Donnell from Uisce Éireann explained, “Old and damaged water mains are a huge source of leakage and continue to impact communities right across Ireland, causing low pressure and supply disruption.”

“Replacing these old water mains in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.”

“I would like to thank the local community in advance for their patience and cooperation during the works, we know based on previous experiences that the short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the long-term benefits.”

The work is due to be completed by April. Where water mains are being constructed traffic management will be in place during this time.

Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.
