Two people in their 40s lost their lives in house fire near Ballinasloe in the early hours of this morning.

At approximately 2am this morning, emergency services were alerted to a house fire at Gurth, Ballinasloe.

Three units of the fire brigade were called to the scene and brought the blazed under control.

The bodies of two people, a man and a woman in their 40s, were found inside the house.

Gardaí have preserved the scene as they work towards establishing the cause of the fire.

The bodies will be removed to Galway General Hospital where post mortem examinations will be conducted.

The State Pathologist Margaret Bolster has been informed. Results of the post mortem and a technical examination of the scene will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
