Public transport users must have a key voice in any future development for the city.
That’s according to Social Democrats candidate for Galway City East Owen Hanley, following the publication of new figures from the National Transport Authority which showed a 13% increase in bus users in Galway in 2018 over the previous year.
“Local people are the ones leading the solutions to Galway’s traffic problems by using existing bus networks and creating great grassroots initiatives like the School Cycle Bus,” said Owen Hanley .
“The increasing demand in Galway for alternative transport routes is going unheard.”
The Social Democrats candidate said that the Galway Transport Strategy offers a strong foundation for the future but requires ‘full and earnest implementation that realises an integrated city bus network’.
“We need to imagine a future city where nobody is further than 10 minutes from their nearest bus stop, with reliable services, and dedicated bus lanes throughout the city. Until then Galway will continue to struggle with its disastrous traffic issues,” he added.
