Nearly €20 million has been allocated to NGOs and civil society organisations in Galway and around Ireland to support their work in the community.
Funding is being provided to 73 NGOs and other community organisations under the under the Scheme to Support National Organisations administered by Pobal.
The Scheme will deliver €18.5 million to these community organisations over the next three years.
Galway West TD and Minister of State Seán Kyne said that this funding is vital for community organisations “as it helps with core operating costs and enables the organisations to advocate for and to support communities”.
He added that the groups being supported by the scheme advocate for many vulnerable communities in Ireland “including older persons, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBT community, immigrants, among others.”
Several of the groups which have received funding in this scheme are based out of Galway such children’s cancer support charity, Hand in Hand, and the Rape Crisis Network Ireland.
Other organisations are based elsewhere, but also operate in Galway or directly support people here such as the Free Legal Advice Centres, Special Olympics Ireland, Threshold, the Irish Hospice Foundation and Anam Cara bereavement support group.
Minister Kyne added that even where the funding is awarded to national NGOs, it is often used to support smaller local groups.
“The Care Alliance Ireland, for example, counts Clann Resource Centre in Oughterard and the city-based Galway Head Injury Support among its members.”
“Similarly, Active Retirement Network in Ireland is the national organisation supporting over 30 local active retirement groups in Galway while the Galway Volunteer Centre is represented by the Volunteering Ireland organisation.”
