The Kilbannon road realignment scheme to improve road safety on the R332 is progressing, with tender documents now being prepared for the project.

Galway East TD Seán Canney said that tenders for the road realignment scheme will be invited this summer.

“The design for the realignment was on pubic display in February and the planning process is expected to be completed this month.”

“Once planning is in place, the tender process can proceed. When that is completed, works can then commence on site.”

The project will include the installation of a footpath from the school to the football pitch to create a safe walking route for young people.

New public lighting will also be installed at the Kilbannon crossroads junction.

Deputy Canney welcomed the progress on the scheme, saying that the stretch of road between the school and football pitch has become very dangerous.

“The road has seen a massive increase in traffic since the opening of the new motorway and these works are essential to improve safety.”

Funding for the design, ground surveys, and planning process for the scheme was made available last year.

More recently, the Department of Transport allocated €500,000 for construction works on the project when it is ready to go ahead.
