Four Galway based angling events and initiatives have been supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Sponsorship Programme for 2019.

Angling clubs and federations applied to the programme, which provides financial support for holding competitions, conservation events and novice coaching programmes.

Of the four events in Galway supported by the IFI,  organised by the Irish Federation of Sea Angling.

They are held a conservation awareness day in the city, as well as a Youth Initiative Day and a Galway Bay SAC Youth Training Day in Spiddal.

And the Newport Angling Club organised Junior Shore Angling events at various locations around Galway and Mayo.

“We hope that an additional 600 novice anglers will try the sport and over 1,500 experienced anglers will take part in competitions as a direct result of this Sponsorship Programme,” said Galway East TD and Minister of State for Natural Resources Seán Canney.

“Inland Fisheries Ireland has delivered financial support which will allow us to recruit new anglers and support initiatives which attract domestic and overseas angling tourism to rural communities.”

In total IFI is supporting 87 events and initiatives to the tune of €30,000 this year, including 45 competitions and 37 Coaching/Junvenile events aimed at getting young people involved in the sport.

Dr Ciaran Byrne, CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland said that this is the sixth year in a row in which they have awarded these grants to support the sporting community.

He added that their strategy in supporting local events is to make angling more accessible and attractive through information, infrastructure and support.
