Early stage plans are in the works for the construction of 110 new homes in Barna, the vast majority of which would be apartments.

Peter and Seona O’Fegan are seeking approval for a Strategic Housing Development at Freeport, Barna, which would enable the plans to be submitted directly to An Bord Pleanála.

The proposed development would consist of 8 houses, 102 apartments, a creche, and associated site works.

The project is currently at the Consultation Stage, which is due to be completed by April 6 of 2021.

If An Bord Pleanála agrees that the proposal would reasonably constitute a Strategic Housing Development, the next step would involve the submission of a full planning application to the authority.

A Strategic Housing Development is a variation of the normal planning process which was created in 2016 to fast-track large scale housing developments.

It allows for housing developments of more than 100 units, or student accommodation consisting of more than 200 bed spaces, to be made directly to An Bord Pleanála, bypassing the local authority.

The Consultation is the first stage of this process, where the Board and relevant local authority, Galway County Council, will review whether the documentation submitted consists of a reasonable basis for an SHD application.
