Galway County Council has given the green light for the construction of a residential development of 27 houses on the south side of Tuam town.

Limekin Construction has received planning permission for a housing estate on land next to the existing Tir an Choir estate, off Barrack Street.

The estate will comprise a mix of two and three bedroom terraced and semi-detached houses.

Five of these will be sold to the council to comply with Part V planning requirements for social or affordable housing.

Planning permission was granted for the residential development by the county council with a total of 18 conditions attached.

One condition stipulated that all of the houses in the estate may only be sold to individual buyers, rather than bulk purchased by corporate entities.

The developer must also pay a contribution of €80,604 to the county council towards the provision of public facilities serving the area.

The council planning inspector noted that the site comprises the last remaining “derelict/redundant” lands within the larger Tir na Choir residential area, and that completing the site would enhance the overall area.

Revised parking layouts, along with a Road Safety Audit and a letter from Irish Water confirming the feasibility of connecting to the public water and sewage system were submitted after a request for further information from the council.
