A developer has been given approval to apply for the construction of 170 houses and apartments on the outskirts of Galway City.

An Bord Pleanála has given Lock House Developments permission to make a Strategic Housing Development planning application.

The project would involve building 84 houses and 86 apartments, along with a creche, at Bóthar na Chóiste, Castlegar.

The developer entered into a consultation for an SHD application last December, where the proposal is outlined to the board and local planning authority, Galway City Council.

The Bord has now decided there is reasonable basis for Lock House Developments to bring an SHD application for the project.
